Min första redigerade bild i "Photoshop 2025".

Salty Scents are a new trend. What They're Like, How to Try Them
Some scents just never go out of style, but let’s be real—fragrance trends come and go, just like fashion. Can you picture the ‘50s without feminine florals? Then came the ‘60s, bringing in a “cool girl” wave of herbs, musk, and patchouli. Fast forward to the 80s—when women were power dressing, bold, intense perfumes matched the vibe. Then we got hit with fruity florals, followed by the “clean…

Do you know much about scentbird? I just got a subscription at the behest of my partner, seems pretty fun. But, this blog has gotten me curious about some of the weirder scents out there, and the ones on scentbird (at least the ones they're recommending me) seem to play it pretty safe. Any suggestions for some oddballs?
oh no... we learned some unfortunate things about scentbird last time it came up. beware
i highly recommend ordering some samples off luckyscent, scentsplit, or fragrancenet - it's cheaper, and you won't have to worry about cancelling or forgetting about a subscription service! (scentbird apparently makes it difficult to cancel once you've subscribed as well)
might i recommend:
scentsplit carries the brand toskovat, which has some pretty wacky stuff. might i recommend inexcusable evil (meant to smell like war - gunpowder, blood, iodine, ozone, etc.), anarchist a- (has a priest robes and credit card note????), things we never shared (every dessert ever And Poison), age of innocence (car accident with bubblegum and cotton candy). keep in mind toskovat is one of the pricier ones to sample, so a sample might net you somewhere around ~9$ USD.
luckyscent, meanwhile, carries notorious weirdo brand etat libre d'orange, which carries some interesting ones like the ghost in the shell (like skin, but off and weird), fat electrician (yummy hazelnut desserts and burnt wires), and secretions magnifiques (Every Body Fluid)
luckyscent also carries zoologist perfumes, which is an interesting brand! each perfume is made by a different parfumer in an attempt to recreate the smell of different animals & the environments they live in. bat, t-rex, squid, and civet are all interesting ones.
a couple one-off weirdos on luckyscent:
doleur!2 by bogue, which is a nasty weirdo with notes of melon, cucumber, metal, civet, and oysters?
stercus by orto parisi is Butthole Themed.
nuit de bakelite by naomi goodsir is WEIRD. very green and bitter plastic.
room 237 by fzotic is based off that one scene in the shining with the naked dead lady in the shower.
another 13 by le labo fascinates me because every single review describes it completely differently.
anyone have any favorite weirdo smells?

very good reasonably priced ($25-$120) indie/niche/designer perfumes so you don't have to buy a dupe of whatever perfume tiktok told you that you need
$27 on fragrancenet. a creamy almond scent that's almost like lotion if you prefer things that are smoother in that way. (link)
white rabbit by d.grayi is $90 for 30ml and $50 for 15ml. i dont own this but i have smelled a sample from a friend and its a very interesting gourmand. creamy, smooth and semi sweet without being cloying. i dont get the hay note (link)
purr by hexennacht is $60 for a spray but they have oils at $15-$16. i bought this for a friend and its divine if you loved and miss elizabeth & james nirvana black you may wanna try this. it's a similar woody-vanilla scent to that one that i haven't been able to find elsewhere but with an added creaminess from the lactonic notes. (link)
if you love a bright sparkling green fragrance than parfum d'ete is your girl. it's great for spring and summer if you aren't into citrus scents. about $60. (link)
if you're on the opposite side of the spectrum and want more of a lush almost jungle type of green there's the classic eden by cacharel. ranging from $18-$25 this one is potent, almost most like the mother of all the forest scents we have now just with a more feminine edge (link)
Mademoiselle Ricci is a beautiful rose chypre. I owned this early in my fragrance journey and while i enjoyed it, it wasnt my favorite so i gave it away but i'd love to revisit it. It's uber feminine musky rose and is only about $30 (link)
want to experience animalics on a budget? pure honey is a reat foray. despite being listed as a white floral it opens very green to my nose, like the stems of a flower not the petal and it has a very waxy-honey scent. a great intro to the scent family, it's available on ebay (full bottles and partially used) for a range of affordable prices. its on fragrancenet but i refuse to support the kardashians but it's up to your discretion (link)
craving cherry? we'll try sweet. it's both a fresh cherry pie and a cherry gloss all wrapped into one with a powdery musky iris drydown. available between $9-$50 (link)
A classing amongst goths for a reason. Anna Sui classic is a powdery iris scent that blends into a soft lipstick scent. It's a cool sort of powdery, that feels delicately dramatic. $25 (link)
Want a cola scent but not mancera prices? Cola by Outremer is that, leaning more towards the citrus than the sticky sweet syrup. Because it's citrus it won't last 8+ hrs but it doesnt need to. It's $22 (link)
Tuberose and overall plasticy doll smells are becoming more popular, and one of the best to do it is Pop. Smells just like a barbie doll's head. Nostalgic. $30 (link)

How I unintentionally became a perfume hoarder in 2024: an olfactory journey [I originally wrote this January 1st and immediately forgot about it]
So I have both chronic sinusitis that impairs my sense of smell and a raging insecurity about whether I smell good, which together make me obsessed with fragrances. I'm like Jean-Baptiste Grenouille from Perfume but instead of murdering women to create the perfect scent I will say things like "Curious by Britney Spears is the best olfactory experience ever" and to some people who hate the truth that's on par with murder.
Anyway!

So this is obscenely overpriced, although you can get it for half the cost on fragrancenet. I am forever obsessed with cherry and I treated myself this year. It's definitely heavy and intense, slightly smoky and sweet, a 2-spray maximum. Base notes of sandalwood and regret. I got complimented by zero people whilst wearing Lost Cherry by Tom Ford and by at least five people while wearing Curious by Britney Spears, a ratio inversely proportional to their pricing

Jo Malone is lit AF, I have recently run out of my Wild Bluebell bottle and got this, English Pear & Sweet Pea, which is amazing. It's an improvement on their older scent, English Pear and Freesia. Also the chief complaint I've heard about JM is that the scent has no staying power and that was definitely true of the Wild Bluebell I bought in England, but this latest purchase from a Bloomingdale's in New Jersey is both delicate and robustly American

These two are my daily wear. I have to say I get the most compliments on Tommy Girl. Clean, floral, nostalgic. Bitches love it! Bitches is me, but also many other people. The Clinique Happy Heart is a more floral twist on the citrusy original Happy, and it too is generally beloved by bitches

One time while I was doing a clinical rotation at a hospital I heard a man getting wheeled away on a gurney say to no one in particular, "You know what the best smell is for women? Woman by Ralph Lauren." Like literally he could have been being taken to a head trauma ward for all I know, because that's how mediocre this scent is. But I had to find out, right? Maybe there was method to his madness, some folksy American Everyman wisdom? There wasn't, and I'm a damn fool. Although for what it's worth, I was complimented once while wearing it, which is one more time than Lost Cherry by Tom Ford

I inherited this from my mom and keep it for the vintage prestige, but Shalimar has always smelled like stale whiskey to me. It still does! Maybe I, a person most frequently smelling of cigarettes and Tommy Girl, just lack the pedigree to appreciate the opulence? It's like bergamot, jasmine and vanilla, all great things individually, but in combination they just smell like a sad grandma party. Come to think of it, a lot of Tom Ford scents are just Shalimar and Chanel No 5 ripoffs with edgy names and unisex marketing

These were all presents and I wish so badly they smelled better than they do. I wish they smelled half as good as Curious by Britney Spears. The only Hermes I like is Le Jardin de Monsieur Li tbh
Also featuring such duds as Cacharel's Anais Anais and such resounding successes as Bath & Body Works' "Fresh Cut Lilacs"

hi you don’t have to answer this if you don’t want to, but i’m trying to find my signature scent but idk like, how to match it to me if that makes sense?? bc my style varies from older brother in 2000s to hippie girl living in the forest😭😭 so i just dont know what perfume i should go for. how do you find your signature scent? is it just trial and error?
yeah it truly is trial and error! i always recommend sampling things in department stores or other vstores that carry fragrance like lush, the body shop etc. i carry a pen so i can write down the name of the fragrance on the tester so ik what im smelling later. i pick one or two scents to spray on myself to see howi like them. and i look up the perfumes on fragrantica! the ones i like i add to my shelf there so i can keep track of what the common thread is.
for me my first signature was loverdose by diesel which is a spicy, ambery scent. i leaned towards those for a while they i started experimenting with newer scents by going off reddit and fragtwt recommendations and convos. keep in mind your nose and your taste is gonna develop along your journey so something you hated you may love now and vice versa. for me it was rose, i used to be meh abt rose but now its one of my fav notes. i used to HATE aldehydes now i absolutely love them.
tbh best way to start is to go to the fragrantica warriors twitter community and ask for recs, comb through fragrantica forums because the website has posts from as far back as 2009 their might be some suggestions there, and to also ask reddit for advice!
and ofc im not gonna let you go empty handed. so first here's some websites to get samples and buy discounted full bottles! (i recommend buying the 2ml-5ml samples for a better idea of how perfumes perform. the 1ml doesnt do much). youre gonna wanna buy full bottles right off that bat. thats a canon event i cannot stop it even if i suggest you not to LOL but luckily its v easy to resell or swap bottles on fragranticaforums and on poshmark
websites: twistedlily, scentsplit, luckyscent, fragrancenet, fragrancex
now for perfumes your vibe is actually v easy i just recommend looking for older designer scents orrrr like i said places like lush. indie perfume houses also have a lot more but im not super familiar with them yet so check out r/indiemakeupandmore
now i think u shld look towards very earthy, herbal scents. notes with amber, citrus, cinnamon, patchouli, cannabis stuff like that. i think it'll blend those two vibes perfectly
woody and spicy and ambery. the site needs to hurry up and add the notes/accords
THEE hippie scent everyone says it smells like walking into an occult shop and it does
very rich, earthy, spicy. unisex despite it saying its for men

you’re a communist and you’re wearing 400$ perfume????
I appreciate the dedication in this ask that you looked up the price but I feel I must clarify I don’t OWN this perfume. I have a few free sample things from my job, which is selling perfume and makeup. Technically we have secret employee extra discount days and I could’ve bought a full bottle during our last sale for 180$ instead of the usual 395$ but I have a limit for how much I’ll spend on a full bottle and tbh I don’t love that fragrance enough to go past that limit. I think the most expensive perfume that I own a full bottle of is my two bottles that I have from the brand Kerosene which are 152$ 100 ml (0.66¢ per ML) but a lot of my perfumes I get at a discount from work or I buy them on websites that do discounts like fragrancenet

thinking about the fragrancenet chamade review and realizing how i never used to understand how and why ppl would just "lose touch" with old friends, even ppl they had been very close to. like if they mattered to you wouldn't you put in the effort? but im older now and i get it. i still don't like it, but i get it. they change - you change - or the circumstances just change, and some relationships will always feel forced when you try to continue them past the point where it was just natural and easy. i feel an intense grief when i think about it for too long - so many things in your life are fleeting and i know that doesn't make them any less meaningful, but god why does it always have to end

Howdy! Where do you buy fragrances? Like stores or websites or what?
i do a combination of both!
physical stores can be nice because you can sample a fragrance and take it home the same day. they're available at your chain stores like ulta and sephora and macy's and whatnot, or if you live somewhere cool, there might be smaller specialty perfume shops.
sites often carry a wider variety of stuff than physical stores.
this is important. you might see a description of a smell online, think "what is that? that sounds lovely, i should buy a bottle." that is referred to as 'blind buying' and it is the devil talking. it's a risky move because you have no idea what it will smell like to you until you get it, and if you hate it, you're stuck with a full bottle of expensive devil liquid that you don't want.
instead, there are a lot of perfume sampling sites like luckyscent, scentsplit, and fragrancenet. you can buy little tiny glass vials of different perfumes for really cheap (usually around $3-9 or so USD) and give it a sniff before you decide to pull the trigger on a full bottle.
full bottles are usually sold directly on the manufacturer's site, or you can purchase them from online department stores or directly from the same site you got your samples from.
also, as a word of warning: beware of amazon! they have a lot of counterfeits. even if you buy from the correct amazon seller, it usually ends up in the same bin as the counterfeits once they reach the warehouse.
