The Veil Trick

Troy 2004 reader insert fanfiction - Part 3

Parts 1 and 2 here .

Word Count: 1.995

Characters: Odysseus, Mycenaean Princess Reader

Relationships: Platonic, Fríendship.

Warnings: Mentions of the changed version of Clytemnestra's story i invented because she is absent in Troy and i wanted to find a reason i felt fitting to Agamemnon's characterization in the movie.

Summary: Odysseus is aware of the reader's growing crush on Achilles and he is concerned. He decides to have a serious, heartfell conversation with her trying to make her understand the risks.

Disclaimers: As i said in the warnings, my main change to an original character from the myths who wasn't in the movie is mentioned. I tried my best to give a proper reason for her absense following the movie's style and readapting part of the esential. As i stated before, i also apologise for any mistakes in my way of expresing in english. I used some words i'm not sure about ( like the use of the word paranoid), but If Peter Jackson's LOTR could have the” meat is back on the menu” line i feel i can allow myself a mistake of period inaccuracy in my humble Troy fanfict.

Odysseus needed to have a serious talk with the girl after what he had witnessed. He felt the urgent need to find a way to disencourage her behaviour without hurting her feelings before it was too late. Instead of taking her immediately with Helen he guided her into a quiet corner of the palace where they could have a conversation without being bothered.

" Of all the men surrounding you, did you really had to fixate on him?" he asked her in a reprobatory tone. He didn't wanted it to sound like nagging but he was worried enough for it to sound like that.

" What are you talking about? I just met him. " she defended herself.

" You can fool Agamemnon but you will never fool me. I saw the way you acted with him."

" I was nervous because he is an intimidating man. "

" Ajax is far more physically intimidating and you never reacted like that in front of him. Are you trying to take me for a fool?"

" I don't, that's impossible. Only a god could do that. "

The king cutted her off quickly, he was aware of her intentions of getting away by flattering him.

" Then you are aware I noticed you feel attracted to Achilles. "

" Almost every woman in Greece is attracted to Achilles, that is not a big discovery. He is handsome, his voice is a delight and , for a warrior of his fame, he has exquisite manners. Those are only objective facts, it doesn't mean anything." she replicated, trying to prove wrong a fact that was obvious to both of them.

" He is the only man here who is strictly forbidden to you. Please, don't forget it the next time you see him. " he reminded her.

" The only reason that matters to every man who actively tried to pursue me is Agamemnon's empire, that's all my worth. They think i don't notice but i do." she stated, annoyed. " That bloody throne doesn't mean anything to Achilles. You can relax, I'm absolutely sure it would never happen even if I wanted it. If wealth and power are out of the discussion i'm just another nobility girl competing against dozens of others without any distinctive trait. He must have lots of those, i'm nothing special."

" You don't need to be so harsh on yourself to show me you understood my message. "

" I'm being rational and realistic, it's what i learned from Nestor and you after all. I don't have a chance, a man like him deserves a demigoddess. Even if he wasn't my father's most hated ally he is out of my possibilities."

Odysseus felt terribly for her. Despite how much she claimed to not care about him sometimes it was possible to hear her father's opinion in her words. It wasn't something that reached the surface often but when it did he couldn't help to feel bad hearing her. She was under too much hard pressure and it was impossible to not get consequences from it. He tried his best to make her see she was approaching the subject wrongly.

" I'm glad you understood what I tried to say, but you are doing it based on the wrong reasons." he calmly explained. " You are a wonderful girl, you could make a god fall for you if you had the right amount of time on your favour for it. You are worthy of any man you may wish to be with, from the poorest peasant to the king of Olympus. I know it must be frustrating for you to stand the approach of men who only try to get your favours by faking interest in you for their own personal goals but you are far beyond that. You are not a shadow of your father and you are not his reflection, that is just a facade that keeps you safe. "

" How?" she asked, doubtfully

" You are not as invisible as you think you are, let them see you through Agamemnon is a veil like trick. Those who can see past the veil would see the real you and, if you want my honest opinion, they would have real reasons to want you. Our problem is that your father is not very fond of letting you choose in aspects of your life more complex than what dress you will wear for a palace event. That veil protects you because if more men see you only through your father they have less chances to stick around and less prospects means less options Agamenon has to consider. Less opportunities for him to commit a terrible mistake and higher chances to delay your eventual marriage. "

" Somehow you make it have sense.."

" Your invisibility protects you. We are letting most men believe that your main source of worth is your position because the fake power craving nobles and the old pigs don't have enough time to stick around and if you keep delaying things they will move on to the next princess. " he added, making her laugh briefly.

" Menelaus keeps making the when is she getting married?,stupid jokes. I'm not eight anymore, I lost all the respect for him I once had. He is starting to push the idea to my father and I hate that. I know he does it because, in his absurd way, he cares, but i'm pretty happy with Agamemnon being too busy tormenting foreign nations and forgetting about my existence. If he doesn't have the time he can't torment me. " she told him.

" See? This is an example that perfectly proves my point. You are closer to the trouble zone when Menelaus makes your father notice you, out of sight you are safe." he kept trying to explain. " Just remember that you aren't invisible because you lack remarkable qualities. I don't have any shame in admitting i'm proud of you, but i'm not your father. You have to keep yourself protected from the stupidity of yours."

" I wish you were. " she admitted, being completely honest. " I don't see the point of this but i guess you have your reasons."

" Get away from Achilles, as much as you can. Not because you are unworthy or incapable of getting his attention, but because he means troubles to you. " he clearly affirmed. " A situation like that makes you dangerously visible to your father. Are you aware of what he could do if he finds out? Don't enrage Agamemnon in the worst possible way if you can avoid it. "

" I'm just being kind around a man I meet and find attractive. I'm not going to act on it. "

" That is the problem! You don't need to act on your feelings to get his ragefull response. The possibility of him rushing a wedding for you with the worst candidate available as a form of punishment is the less damaging one." he warned her. " No one has forgotten what happened to Clytemnestra. I have a real and justified reason to fear for your fate. After her, Agamenon became a total paranoid, even more than usual. Why do you think he never remarried? You know how much he craved a male heir yet he didn't try to marry again. He killed his wife because she had an affair with a conspirator. What do you think he would do if he finds out that the daughter she gave him is infatuated with Achilles? He would imagine all kinds of crazy about you two conspiring against him. He would claim some stupid thing like betrayal running in your blood and he would kill you. He would never dare to harm him in any way because he needs him, somebody would carry all the weight of the punishment and that would be you. "

" How did he allow Menelaus to marry her younger sister then? He should be against the marriage if his fears are that strong." she asked, trying to come to understand the nature of the warning

" Helen is desired by too many important men, she is a symbol of power and you know the sons of Atreus never lose their chances of acquiring as many as they can. Agamemnon lets his brother have her because it means the rest in a very long list of influential men wouldn't. Between you and me? He also thinks she is too dumb to be part of a conspiracy or even to successfully cheat on her husband . "

She felt disgusted but not entirely surprised. It was a high level of stupid underestimation, but it was his usual.

" Just because she is the prettiest woman in the world he thinks she is dumb enough to be trusted? That's absurd, his typical absurd. "

" I'm glad you two are bonding. She will need a friend." he pointed out, noticing how much she already cared for her.

" She is my aunt, we are family. One of my few chances of getting closer to my mother's family" she commented with a bit of melancholy on her voice. " Did she look like her when she married him?"

" Not exactly, but it doesn't mean she wasn't beautiful" Odysseus replied, trying to satisfy her curiosity somehow." Helen is very different from most women of her family, you can get a more accurate reference mixing Penelope in her features."

" I wish i could remember more." she concluded, trying too hard not to think about it to avoid the pain she usually associated with her vague memories.

" It's alright, dear. I don't want to trouble your mind." Odysseus hushed her in a sweet, calming tone " I just want you to stay alert because i worry for you. Maybe more than I should but I don't want to take chances. "

" Can i keep admiring him from afar and in complete silence, at least until he leaves Sparta? I have to give myself some time to overcome the first impression" she asked. She had a playfully innocent expression that he found pretty amusing.

" From a very long distance and making a better effort in hiding it."

" Don't make me think about it. I must have looked like a fool. I feel so upset with myself because he probably noticed it and I couldn't do anything to prevent it. I ruined my chance for secrecy." she complained, still feeling terrible for the embarrassment she felt. " The bright side of this is that I went completely against myself and this is the worst for my image. The first impression he got from me was the image of a stupid, blushed girl shaming herself in front of him. It's the perfect way to repel him. "

" He was enjoying himself. He loves to get that sort of reaction and getting it from you must have been a pretty good boost for his pride. " the king joked, trying to make her feel better while speaking from his very well versed knowledge about his friend " He is going to be in a very good mood for the rest of his visit."

" Less chances for him to start fights with my father. I didn't do so wrong after all, there is at least a small perk. " she added.

Thinking that, because of her, Odysseus's labour of peace keeper between Agamemnon and Achilles would be easier that time made her feel slightly better.

" Do you feel ready to go back to the party?" he asked her, satisfied with the outcome of their chat.

" I promised Helen I would look after her and she must not understand why I got away for so long. Let's go back."

The princess returned to the big hall holding his hand. She was pleasantly surprised when she found out that Helen had already been rescued by Penelope, who managed to get her away from the uncomfortable circle of people previously surrounding her.

Odysseus was absolutely aware that was going to happen. He knew his wife better than everyone and she was the only person in Greece who knew every side of him.

Why Double Trouble is an amazing shape-shifter

... And why this show writers are just so f***ing amazing.

I know Double Trouble has become a top favorite for most SPoP fans, they are an amazingly fun character and great representation for non binary people with great use of they/them pronouns. But that's not what I want to talk about here, I want to discuss why they are such a great shape-shifter and how the writers avoided some of the most tired cliches when it comes to characters with that ability.

When Double Trouble was introduced, I loved them immediately but I was afraid how the writers would use them in the story. When a shape-shifter is introduced in a story to plant seeds of mistrust and confusion among the heroes, it is often done in a very plain and boring way. The shape shifter wants char A and char B to fight, so they transform into char A go to char B and say something mean, then the other way around, and that's it, fighting begins, both characters now hate each other and the shape-shifter fulfilled their role. And I really thought the show was going to do that, have the horde kidnap one of the princesses or Bow and have Double Trouble take that role. But they didn't. Double Trouble assumed an entire new identity and that's genius.

In the cliché scenario, the story and characters are shown in pretty much black and white, the heroes are so good at being friends, that only the scheme of someone evil can break them apart, isn't that a strong friendship? Of course not! in these cases the friends are often in a good place of the relationship, but suddenly forget any development so far just because of a trick, which, contrary to the original intention, makes the fríendship all the more meaningless. It would have been so easy to keep the characters black and white and have Double Trouble transform into Glimmer and have them say hurtful things to Adora and viceversa, but no, they let the characters be themselves and face their own flaws, and break apart on their own, because of their own past and losses, their own guilt and fears.

Even Double Trouble pointed out when they were caught, the reason why they believed the performance of Glimmer and Adora fighting was because it was rooted in their real feelings, they were already falling apart, the shape-shifter might have created bits of chaos here and there but they were not to blame for the rupture in the fríendship of Adora and Glimmer.

And I think Double Trouble not taking the fast route to make Glimmer and Adora fight was not just a writing decision to better illustrate the falling apart of two friends but it was also completely in character with Double Trouble, because they see their shape-shifting ability as an art form, it's not just looking like someone, is getting into character, is playing a scene in real life, seeing the consequences of their performance, going the easy route would be an insult to their skill.

Friendship was a strong theme this season and the show didn't sugar coated, keeping a frienship going ain't easy, it takes a lot of work, from both parts, and pain can come not only from outside but also from whitin and it is in our hands to fix it if we wish for it to continue. And in so glad SPoP didn't fall into clichés and made justice to both, Double Trouble and the frienship of the characters.
