Since I've seen more than a couple of people not sure how Worldbuilding Wednesday works, I wanted to help out a little so no one feels either too shy or unsure to chime in! We're all in this together, I promise!
Linking your lair in your post helps folks a ton! That way we can go ogle your kids and get an idea of who we might want to ask more about.
Speaking of which, please do let folks know if there's any dragons who you might not want questions about. Whether they don't have lore yet or they're maybe a fodder dragon, we can avoid them if you wish!
There's a ton of prompts hanging around and I'll try to reblog some tomorrow for everyone. This way, people can send you some questions from said prompts and it makes things nice and easy if you just want to follow along with the outline!
Don't be afraid to just go for it!! I've absolutely just started blathering on about either my current dragon fixation or a whole faction before. I tag stuff with things like "FR Worldbuilding" or "FR Storytime" (sometimes even just "Worldbuilding Wednesday") personally, so those tags may very well help you get an idea of what you might want to do. The more stuff we tag, the more we can read all of our fun lore. :)
Questions are always, always welcome. I'll help out anyone who needs it, promise--and I'm sure others are just the same. I want us to have a fantastic time. :D
I'm definitely probably forgetting something or other, so paging Dr. @spongyspingy-rising just in case they have anything to add.
I'm so excited!

Gene origin headcanon-Brightshine/Sparkle
The original brightshine wasn’t a heritable gene. It was a gift the Lightweaver herself, bestowed on her most favorite and loyal children. These “brightmarked” were deeply respected and often given special privileges throughout the Flight.
However, it didn’t take too long for scroll artists to make imitations, some ranging from a weak sparkle to a nearly perfect copies of the brightmark. (In fact, one scroll maker flooded the market with them at a loss, purely to spite the elite.)
There was already some debate around “scrolled” vs “true” appearances, and whether using scrolls was cheating fate or dishonest etc, but the idea that any dragon with enough treasure could masquerade as a god’s chosen really set the debate into overdrive.
Scrolling fell out of fashion for a while, or at least, dragons claimed not to use them, but brightshine/sparkle had already circulated far and wide.

WBW and I bring you a collection of stars from the Deeprealm.
In the Deeprealm dreams are real and time doesn't make sense. It is every hour of every day at the same time, forever, the stars and the sun and the moons occupy the sky all at once. It is both dusk and dawn at the same time. Time and space are the same thing and to move forward in space you do so in time and to see the future or the past all you have to do is get there.
But it can be a dangerous place. Especially for baby stars that are the favorite easy meal of Deeprealm Hunters.
Which is where Altair (Imperial) and Malik (WC) come in. They're both adult stars. They run a nebula nursery of sorts. When a star is born they pluck it out of the sky and raise them into proper adult stars. While in the nursery they get to play with other baby stars and stretch their powers without fear of a Hunter coming to gobble them up!
While stars wear the guise of dragons, especially around visitors, they are not dragons. They're stars. They're made of gas and light and stardust. But when dragons of Sorienth visit it's polite to wear the guise of a dragon and not a towering being of light and fire and smoke.

oh man tell us about Turuque (#66308507) ? they look really cool
Ah yes, The Scout, the Aimless Mouthful, Ambrosia's babygirl, one of the Altar's most guy of all time, Turuque!
One of the few who willingly joined the Altar's troupe with no relation to them at all. His past before joining is short and unimportant to him all things considered: exiled from his old home due to an untreated variant of gembond breakout that originated with him which took many of their residents down, he was left to his own devices and took the exile in stride. He would make the most with his circumstances no matter what crossed his path and eventually he managed to lessen his gembond infection via herbal remedies and his own stubborness (the treatment did lessen his outbreak but left hole-like colored spots across his scales and th occasional itch and scarring resulting of picking his own scales and wings)
On one of his many traversals across the canyonwalks he came across what at the time was a ragtag gang composed of Queren, Fass, Ambrosia and Cuu. They let him hang around and share a couple meals while he aided them cross the realm to the nearest city. On their last day, Turuque came to them to let him join their gang assuring them that his assistance would be of use should they require it (it being his practical knowledge in medicine, navigation and generally a good around attitude, not much but its honest work), they declined him. With a half-hearted apology and a vacant promise of goodwill they went their way and him his.
Years would pass before he came across the now entourage, named the Roving Altar, being led by the same small gang he met so long ago. He stalked them from a distance with no particular goal, simply enjoying the feeling of getting to hang around with them like the old times even if it had to be in such a disclosed way. One thing led to another and he found himself in the same position from last time: before them at the crossroads, wanting in. This time though, his wish was given more consideration and after a long discussion and explanation from them, he simply accepted; leaving all leaders baffled at his choice. It's not that Turuque dismissed their warnings or didn't know what he was getting into, he didn't even "see" nor "felt" this so called Altar they would claim to be subordinate to, he just enjoyed having them around and belonging somewhere after so much time.
He is among the first to reach any clans the Altar is interested in meddling with, he pitches the clan's strengths and why they choose said clans for their trading group to make business with. Some clans are more privy to these sort of offers from stranged travellers but Turuque is particularly good with his wordings and manages to get his way for them via good word pressed from previous arrangements or placid conversation and a confident approach (something he will admit he wasn't aware he could pull until being put to practice on a whim), sometimes their negotiations cam take days or weeks and while most have been successful, there are the rare declines that simply roll off his shoulders like nothing, not all can be winners after all.
When the clan gets their way and settle for the coming days of trade and sales, Turuque passes most of his time aiding the traders so their staying is as well received as possible while his friends do their ritual thing (although he thinks he should be more concerned or alert about that part, he knows whatever meddling the Altar does has not afflicted negatively the clans they have visited so he keeps to himself with that). Once all is done and everyone packs to leave he gets to spend time once again with his pals, having now time to chat and play a bit to lessen their worries or talk away what weighs in their minds. He is well aware of Fass' failing mind be it to his delusions or the maybe real thing controlling him around, Queren's sudden absence and Ambrosia's stress and Cuu's fears; he knows he can't do much to really fix anything on his own, he really doesn't know what he is working with and refuses to acknowledge the big That which clearly haunts this whole clan. But it's really difficult to do so when there's nothing at all, so in the meantime he only nods and plays along
#flight rising#fr worldbuilding#Turuque#tldr: “everyone here is having some sort of mass hysteria but my friends (and perpetuators of it) are here and i wont leave them for it <3”#he and ambrosia have a thing (ambrosia just refuses to call it by name bcuz work/life relations shit)

Please tell me more about the restless dead, they seem really interesting!
ty!!! so: to talk about the restless dead first we have to talk about how dragons of dragonhome dealt with corpses. for generations, the cairnstone rest was a mausoleum where the dead--usually the most notable dragons--were interred in small alcoves like this
less famous dragons were encased in catacombs beneath towns, which frequently connected to the many tunnels and caverns beneath dragonhome. the bodies were often petrified via geomancy and alcoves were typically left open, and decorated with items from their life and loved ones (my touchstone is specifically draugr in skyrim). some of these alcoves were opted to be sealed entirely, as close to the body as possible, a popular form of burial for adept geomancers in particular. this fell out of vogue, and then out of practice, and fading into the vaguest of cultural knowledge. (not totally sure what they do with their dead currently--i think its something that saves more space, but involving petrification. my first thought was cremation and then using geomancy to use the ashes to create a gemstone resembling the dragon? not sure yet.)
anyways the restless dead is the flowery term for undead/zombies/walking skeletons. a written-off change in leylines altered magic in certain areas to be a naturally-occurring healing and resurrection font, however briefly. this phenomenon is what caused the familiars of the arlo plots to come back to life! it also caused long-dead dragons to begin walking the tombs and tunnels that riddle the earth territories.
i havent.......totally worked out why theyre disappearing living dragons other than "undead scary" but they sure are making archeological work hard! especially when the bones youre trying to study literally get up and walk away

For me it depends on the dragon specifically, some of my dragons have gone through diabetic gene and breed changes while others haven't. Mostly things like my G1s not staying as nocs, those breed changes and geneings aren't diegetic, but other ones are. One of my Naomis was originally a guardian but changed herself to be a wildclaw to run away from the failure she felt at not having found a charge. Another one of my dragons completely regened himself (breed change included) as a way to distance himself from his past and to better match the persona he puts on.
I tend to use genes in general as a sign of socioeconomic status for my dragons. Gem genes are typically a sign of generational wealth, while things like uncommon genes (coli, Baldwin, Arlo) are more usually tied to having an active life more separate from wider society or more closely related to the beastclans (whether that's by virtue of being part of an underclass or because of just living in a more rural area, they're generally tied to self sufficiency) while common genes (treasure genes basically) are reflective of a more standard background working in a trade and purchasing these items rather than making them or finding them oneself. (This heirarchy isn't true for breed changes, though. Those are quite rare and while they can be attempted quite easily if the individual's temperament is not compatible with the breed they're trying to become it typically will fail)

Though its golden age ended long ago, Apotelesmatis was once one of the biggest necromantic cults on Sornieth. In a fragile new age of modern dragons establishing their cultures and identities, Apotelesmatis was at the forefront of the still-young art of necromancy, and many of the techniques pioneered by the mysterious Lord of Little Deaths have since become common practice. While the home base of the cult was in the Starfall Isles, and boasted the highest population, Apotelesmatis' wings stretched far wider in those days. Small clans of Apotelesmatis necromancers were scattered in nearly every Flight, recruiting and spreading the word of their Lord. The decisive battle that ended the cult's reign was only the finale to a long war, one that the Children of the Blood-Mark and the Gaoler Orders had been waging against these smaller branches for years. Apotelesmatis' memory lingered for hundreds of years, but in those early days, repositories of knowledge were scarce, and time erased many facts about this once-powerful force. In our modern day, information about the cult is rare and treasured. Much of what we know about it now is based on the work of archaeologists and historians piecing together the few artifacts left over from that ancient age. In fact, knowledge about Apotelesmatis is so thin on the ground that the location of its home base is still completely lost to time…

I will be on and off today but I really wanna play part in this lol so if you got any lore questions, here's a link to my lair c:
Things to note:
-might take me a bit to reply, I'm at work and also a slow writer on mobile im so fucking sorry orz
-The first 4 tabs have their separate story...lines? Not everything is linked or known yet but some dragons influence other's events -Roving Altar and Azueto/Silgeros Isle are heavy cases for example-)
-El Nido and Silgero's Isle are very much a WIP but Kaan and Kuun (and others) have some trivia I wanna share thru the day hopefully
-Scattered Fools is pretty much what says on the tin lmao, odd pairs and characters that might or might not be tied to something else (especially the first 4 tabs)
-Hibden, Oldtrench Cave/Villa, specifically, is full of old trash, there's some stories but like...they are bad lol.
- Day, Night and the Inbetween is non-canon compliant and self indulgent lore of something I have been wanting to know how to express, feel free to ignore it
-Any remaining tabs are more WIP or project/sales tabs so *shrug*
#flight rising#fr worldbuilding#WBW#im gonna be lurking the tags to find folks to ask about their kiddos 👀 but feel free to link me yalls lairs ❤️#world building wednesday

That is most definitely Iavor! And not quite in the way you'd think, either!
Since he runs the Emerald Locust Tavern, he's super picky about food in a manner that he wants it all to be the best. If food isn't fresh or delicious, he doesn't want it hitting his customers' plates at all. He doesn't want it in the KITCHEN. His mate teases him endlessly about it, but nothing will change his mind!
Luckily, he has his crew to help him find the best food--and a lot of it is grown in the Clan in the Mists itself. For more exotic ingredients however, he often takes it into his own hands to work with his clan-mates on getting it. There's tons of traveling folk that have made great connections with other clans for this very reason!
All in all: visit the Tavern, and you'll be treated to nothing but the best from this silly picky guy.
Happy WBW!
Which one of your dragons... is most picky about food?
