How i think videogame preservation should go

This is a kind of post that could apply to any game.

The files

Like simply selecting the game and being able to play it because videogames are an interactive medium.

Could mean an exe, rom, etc

Another thing is versions like ports or updated/outdated versions.

Even better if a game has an available source code.

And of course: No internet needed.

Considering what i mean by this part, there's a reason why people need to considering something that isn't physical objects that could age in real time or services that aren't trustworthy.

"Inside" the game

Think of sites like The Cutting Room Floor or Spriters Resource where people take assets from games.

Sometimes for trivia and documentation and other times for fun like sprite comics or fangames.

Because assets are part of a game's history.

Documentation

Stuff like videos and wikis.

I'm sure some people fear that anyone would use these as a replacement to actually playing the game.

I'm for both ways: Document as much of a game as possible and still make sure it's played.

"Secondary" but still "close" material

Things like a game's cover box art and the instructions manual, which means i'm refering to games that weren't primarly released digitally.

Other material

Merchandise (Could be hard, it's why i once thought of "what if the next Doom made secret collectables based on pre-existing merch?"), interviews of the devs, marketing, even stuff like adaptations in other mediums etc.

There's probably stuff i might be forgetting.

Testing the limits of my kitchen

Listening: I've been using my enormous playlist of Japanese Jazz Fusion as background music at home. This is Galactic Funk by Casiopeia.

Reading: There's a great PBS video on insect metamorphosis that debunks the whole Butterfly Soup thing and explains the much, much more bizarre truth: even before they enter a chrysalis, caterpillars have started to develop butterfly parts inside their bodies. Big chunky caterpillars contain a half-built butterfly. Inside the chrysalis they simultaneously dissolve the remainder of the caterpillar parts and finish the butterfly on the existing scaffolding.

There's a great paper referenced in that video which is this one, which is about findings from time-lapsed 3D CAT scans (which I guess makes it 4D) of caterpillars as they pupate.

There's actually quite a few interesting papers on following metamorphosis with modern imaging technology, including a big old thesis that I have only just started to dig into and that I do not understand.

Watching: Nothing.

Playing: I got a little obsessed with Bullets Per Minute, a rhythm FPS roguelike. Well, more of a tempo FPS roguelike, since you have to fire, reload, jump and dash on a very regular 88bpm 4/4 rock/metal soundtrack. Here, I've cut some clips together.

Hell of a lot of fun, I've been in the market for a really fast paced shooter. I tried to replay Titanfall 2, which is good. I also had a good time playing Warframe missions I was way too high level for, eventually I remembered watching the ZeroPunctuation on this and picked it up.

BPM feels great and is also a really fascinating old-fashioned indie roguelike. The game has almost no tutorials, you just get dropped into levels. Items have absolutely bare minimum descriptions and no hard numbers, the fan wiki is full of notes very clearly the result of trying to puzzle out exact damage numbers and percentile improvements from the player side of the game.

It is not hostile though! Very forgiving accessibility options if you aren't great with rhythm and good difficulty modes. I've done two full clears on normal difficulty and like with most roguelikes, that was a product of familiarity and getting the Good Items early in my run (thank you infinite ammo + revolver)

Making: Made a full spec Wedding Meal (vegetable biryani, dal, and soji) for Friends over the weekend. Easier than I expected! A lot of prep but not actually that time consuming, as long as like me you're good chopping one million vegetables.

Also finished hacking on monctl to have a command line interface. It allows fast USB control of a Gigabyte monitor. I have started poking at Display Data Channel to better generalize monitor control because I want to get a second monitor soon but this works great for now.

Tools and Equipment: If you have a dishwasher you should pretty much always use it to wash, even if it's only half full. Your dishwasher probably uses under 12 liters of water to do a full wash cycle, less on Eco modes. You are almost never going to beat it for economy or sterilization, so the only things you should wash by hand are things you either cannot put in the dishwasher (e.g. cast iron) or things you need washed right now.

Comparing games' difficulty to wheelchair ramps isn't a fair analogy. One is made to assist someone inherently unable to do tasks through no fault of their own, and the other is made to make something that's possible for everyone unless you're mentally disabled easier. Yes, it will certainly be more difficult for people with messed up hands, but there's ways around that, and if that's not enough, you probably can't play any game in that genre anyways (think fps's and people with Beals-Hecht)

You do inherently lose some value with a difficulty setting. What's the point in buying a game marketed as difficult if you're just going to have it give you a bib and spoon-feed you? For the story? That's what the plot synapses and wikis are for. If you can't handle a book's trigger warnings, you don't read it. If you don't like the museum's art, you don't buy tickets. And if you don't like how difficult a game is, you don't play it.

That doesn't mean I'm inherently against difficulty settings in games. I'm actually for difficulty settings in most games. The key word is most. Puzzle games, for example, can almost never have one, because it wouldn't be a very good puzzle if there were. Games with the goal to be difficult would be foolish for putting one in, because your game isn't very difficult if the enemies barely scratch you. But things like roguelikes? Of course they should have a difficulty option! Same with offline first person shooters, and primarily story driven games, and sandbox games (Minecraft and Terraria as main examples). But the reason to not have one almost always trumps the reason to have one. Are you really telling me you'd want a difficulty setting in a game like portal, where the only way to make it easier would be to put giant red arrows telling you how to solve a puzzle, and extend the time for glados' fight? Because you can't lower turret damage, the entire point of them is to stop them from being able to touch you for more than 2 seconds before you take them out. They're a deterrent, not an enemy you're supposed to brute force. Not every game should have one, and if it doesn't and you don't like it, ask yourself if it could have one without inherently subtracting from the game itself.

I'm a casual gamer.

And that's okay.

I, admittedly, kinda suck at most games. Platforming AND shooting? Nope. I can't manage both. Precise dodge times for potential lethal shots? No way. Combat systems past 4 buttons? I'll just lay here, thanks.

But I love a good story. I can't write out how much I absolutely adore stories. I may not be a writer, but my stories run through my veins. Because of this contradiction, I often find myself looking at a game, playing the first 3 stages/chapters/bosses/etc, and setting it down because I suck absolute ass at it. I'm not "Can't get past the tutorial jump of Cuphead game journalist" bad, but I am "The hardest thing I managed in videogames was that I beat the first 3 stages of Cuphead on simple mode" bad.

Because of this, I OFTEN find myself watching plot synapses of the more story-based games that I picked up, enjoyed, and realized would only be able to beat in 5 years.

I'm also, however, of the opinion that games shouldn't necessarily have an easy mode. Games like Dark Souls would lose value if they catered towards people like me, and I've accepted that I will never be able to beat them. But that doesn't mean I don't dive into internet rabbit holes about the plot of Doom, even though I can't even beat level 5.

My D7100 is a 24.1mp DX format CMOS censor. What is a crop censor? a crop censor dslr has a smaller censor measuring 24x16mm..This is very small compared to the D5 that is 36x24mm.I am going to go full frame because there are so many better options to capture a great photo. There are many great advantages to using Full frame with many better things like frames per second, better dynamic range and many more. I will eventually go full frame once I have a great selection of lenses to use on the Fx camera. All the buttons seem to be easier and quicker to access at speed whist out shooting. I have many lenses that are available to use on full frame cameras . Many prime lenses on a crop censor have to be cropped by 1.5 so if you use a 50mm on a full frame camera it is equivalent to using an 75mm lens. All lenses will be similar and that would be good for macro and large tele photo lenses.

There are four  main types of sensors, CCD ( Charged couple device ) and CMOS ( Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor ) and there are others called Flaveon and 4/3rds.

CCD captures photons as electrical charges in each photosite ( a light sensitive area that represents a pixel. After exposure the charges are swept off the chip to an amplifier located in the corner of the sensor, it is then converts the analogue signal to digital form and handles storing it on your memory  card.

CMOS sensors are less expensive to manufacture than CCD sensors. Both CCD and CMOS start at the same point they have to convert light.

Foveon X3 Sensor

This is mostly used in sigma Dslr and has been around since 2002.It was manufactured by Dongbu electronics. It also uses photosites to capture light.

Four thirds system

is a standard created by Olympus and Eastman Kodak for digital single lens reflex (DSLR ) and mirrorless cameras.

Bit depth...

bit depth refers to colour information stored in an image.The higher the bit depth of an image the more colours in it can be stored. The smallest image a 1 bit can only show two colours that are black and white because the 1bit values are 0-white and 1 black...and if an 8bit image can store over 256 different colours. where as if you had a 24bit image it could display over 16million different colours in it. The  file sizes of the image increase because more information has to be stored for each pixel in the image.  When you save or export an image as a GIF or PNG you could select bit depth resulting file.

SUNLIGHT: INTRO

In the future, an investigative blogger asks me:

   'Hey, excuse me. I just wanted to ask, what is Sunlight and how did you get started on this project?'

Oh, sure, i can give a quick answer to that. Sunlight is a scifi about school, space battleships, and imperfect communication between friends. The major character is Hannah, a young woman who signed up for the Navy despite the pressure to get a normal, healthy job. Most people in this setting think of the military as frivolous and obsolete, and it's actually not an exaggeration to say that Hannah has a nostalgic, adventure-seeking streak. Hannah, a recent graduate of Pilar Academy, is the leader of a Close Quarters Combat squad specializing in ship-to-ship boarding actions. She fights with a quad-hammer, strength harness, and magneto glove. 

There are really a lot of characters and details in this universe. I used to maintain a wiki on Obsidian Portal about it.

The gist is that it's a set of stories about attending a slightly drowsy military academy, groups of friends unsure exactly what they want or where they are going, and finding love in a world of pointless and harmless violence. 

I discovered Sunlight late one night on Tumblr. I was up at 0200 when their server went down, and when it came back up they were accidentally showing me tag feeds from a parallel universe. I stayed up and checked it out; this other universe has some cool differences from ours. They never got Minecraft, for example, but over there Starcraft Ghost is very successful series. 

One of them is this series of action & strategy games called Sunlight. They're kindof like slightly less professional versions of Overwatch, as far as i can tell. Anyway it's really big and the series has been around since their 2008. There was even a movie that was somewhat well-received ... according to Tumblr anyway. The only site i’ve been able to access from that universe is Tumblr, so it’s not like i can check their version of Rotten Tomatoes.

The first game in the series, Sunlight, was the debut game of VileMilan Studios (never founded in our universe). It was a FPS with a focus on equipment customization and team play. The art design budget was limited and there were really only three or so allied NPC models. After Sunlight's wild success, Sunlight 2 started referring to these NPCs as Bravo Squad, and the junior writing staff whipped up some bios (and retcons) for them. These ended up on the promotional website in the section designed to show off how narratively rich and cinematic Sunlight 2 was. One of Bravo Squad, Lysa, even became a supporting character in a tie-in novel later on. 

My imagination was captured by these minor characters. After following the tag for a while, i found myself spinning stories of their time in training, growing up together. I've actually started to write some fanfiction about the series. Some of the details, admittedly, are my own invention, since the games don't really focus on these parts of the world. I mean i haven't played any of the games but i feel like i have a pretty good handle on the story from all the gifsets. And the planets they visit are definitely canon.

Some Bravo Squad characters i like to write about:

Hannah, called Hammerhand in the marketing. A Medium. Likes warrior-poets.

Perihelion Yamaguchi, called Peri, a Medium sniper. Quiet, contemplative. After graduation she reconnects with her religious family in a big way and becomes the Young Queen Rhiannon.

Lysandra, called Lysa. She knew she wanted to join the navy ever since she read her first Horatio Hornblower book in primary school. Big ego, big ambitions, was the top-graded in her class back on her home planet.  Uses a teleport harness, field laptop, and electro drones. A Light.

Shawn. She keeps to herself, but she's part of the group and is good with an assault rifle. Knows the best ramen places. A Medium.

Bu, who fights with two axes and plenty of strength biomods. A low-armor Heavy.

Fiona, with repulsor wings and a heat-seeking spear. A Light. 

Some sub-settings:

The early cadetship on the mighty flagship HMS Titan (back before they even had any weapon certificates!)

Pilar Academy, and the windy grasslands used for ground war classes. 

Mars, work placement missions against the robot warlords.

The winter internship in the echoing tunnels of the mysterious alien moon Extremis A.

The interplanetary expeditions of the graduates' warband: Dragon Team.

The Bevelled Plains, greatest land theater in the whole sector, created by an eccentric necrotechnomancer as his last gift to the tradition of warfare. 

Basic backstory:

It's the future, & all problems have been solved. 

Poverty, agriculture, space colonization, gender, artificial intelligence, economics, death, violence, politics... Whatever it is, someone has already gotten there first. 

This is a little disconcerting for a young person who dreams big. All the demons that still exist were created for mere entertainment in safe, isolated environments. Ambition is redirected into games and amusement parks. 

War is obsolete. Militaries linger on at a fraction of their old budgets, funded mostly by donors and hobbyists. 

All intercultural conflicts have so many outlets and safeguards set up that the possibility of violence is astronomically low. 

Conflicts are settled by diplomacy or fair arbitration under pre-agreed rules. 

And the end of scarcity means that people don't really get serious about fighting anymore. 

Furthermore, brain backups, body manufacturing, brain emulation, and artificial bodies are all so developed that lethal injuries are no longer a realistic threat. 

If you die, you'll just wake up in a newly-grown body the next day.

But the literary and narrative traditions about warriors survive.

And it is this poison that has gotten into the veins of our protagonists. 

War is like sports.

It is hosted by special venues - theaters - such as colosseums and state parks. 

Violence outside of predeclared areas is ridiculed.

Armies (a fraction of their historical size) are funded by advertising, merchandise, and tips.

Marketing the combatants is an important part of the military business model. 

The actual main character of the Sunlight video games is Agent Golem, champion of the combat tournaments that war has devolved into.

Her life is legitimately dramatic and involves power struggles between sponsors, the pressure of being the best in the world, etc. However, the life of the average war enthusiast is much more mundane.

Military technology is marketed to retrofuturist hobbyists, and features a kitschy exuberance in its design and branding (Electroblasters, Meltaswords, etc.).

There also exist backwater moons that artists have seeded with self-constructing species of robots (Pandoricans), just as something to fight. These are not very dangerous given that death is a totally curable condition.

These moons are somewhere between theme parks, open-air zoos, and live-action video games

Also, gender roles have changed. Most parents and organizations obsess over children's genomes before conception, and the current fashion in this sector is bright, athletic daughters who strive for uniqueness. (Unfortunately, there is only a finite supply of uniqueness available.) Male births are down in the low single digit percentages, and most parents seem reluctant to bother with the gender.

Then I learned how to think a complete work. The audience goals, It had many ways, such as Demographics, Psychographics, Personas, etc. I also need to think the possibility and risk of a work, the details of the work and the story line, the time required, etc. For example, the assignment of the final project, I had to consider the technology, library, code to complete the work.

The significance of a project, the background and what it can bring to people are the most important and I know how to think about the work in the right direction.

The learning process of this module was hard, but it was also interesting and substantial. For example, in the process of thinking about the assignment of the Further Field, what kind of games can attract the audience and make the audience feel interesting and easy to understand, how to give the audience information about the exhibitions without making them bored during the game, how to set each one operation process and how to make the equipments safe and always running, these were all problems that I needed to consider. To solve these problems required to search a large amount of information and to do a lot of experiments. This process is full of challenges and I enjoyed it.

Lastly the company is set to significantly up its manpower in the British capital. “Since we began offering our services to European users in 2014, we have seen the crypto space grow significantly. The EU grew twice as fast as any of our other markets in 2017, and the UK continues to be our largest market here. In order to meet this increasing demand we plan to grow our London team 8x by the end of this year,” stated CEO Feroz.
