Kim Hongjoong {Lucky Quinn}

[25 years old]

(based on Harleen Quinzel, Harley Quinn)

Backstory: Grew up in Seoultham and started studying psychology in college at a young age. At 17, he was kidnapped by and experimented on by notorious Seoultham villain The Joker. He was eventually forced to take a serum derived from the same chemicals that drove Joker insane and bleached his skin. Naturally, Hongjoong suffered from the same effects and even developed a sick admiration for the villain. He did everything and anything he could in an attempt to earn Joker's trust and approval. However, Joker and his other followers would often ostracise and abuse him, eventually kicking him out to the streets to die after a few years. Luckily for him, his childhood friend Mingi found him and took him in. With Mingi's help, Hongjoong was able to gain back some sanity and somewhat integrate back into society. Well...the society that he had known for the past few years, at least. He founded Birds of Prey with Mingi.

Song Mingi {Flying Fox}

[23 years old]

(based on Barbara Gordon, Batgirl)

Backstory: Child tech genius who grew up in Seoultham. From young, he was always very socially awkward and introverted due to how much time he spent inventing and programming. He built seemingly impractical but highly advanced machinery and programmes, which he would later on make use of as a vigilante. When Hongjoong, his only friend growing up, suddenly went off the grid, Mingi dropped everything to try to track him down. After a few years, he succeeded in finding Hongjoong and took him in. Horrified after hearing of Hongjoong's experience, he soon started the Birds of Prey with him in hopes of finding other like-minded outcasts who wanted to help keep Seoultham safe.

Park Seonghwa {Ivy}

[26 years old]

(based on Pamela Isley, Poison ivy)

Backstory: Moved to Seoultham at 17-18 to study biotechnology and plants there. He fell in love with his biotechnology professor and let her conduct experiments on him. After undergoing the experiment that permanently altered his DNA to that of a plant's, the professor lied about having an antidote and instead abandoned him and ran away. A 19 year old Seonghwa developed hatred of women and extreme trust issues, and started isolating himself and his plants from the world. For years, he hid away from society to learn about his new abilities, and would only leave his hiding places to go to bars to seduce people that he could bring home as food for his carnivorous plants. This was how he met Hongjoong, who had been bored and wandering the streets by himself. When trying to feed Hongjoong to his plants, he was taken aback by how the light-skinned man was more fascinated than afraid. Hongjoong talked about the Birds of Prey, and Seonghwa decided to join them. The two men bonded quickly due to shared experience and trauma of being betrayed and ruined by someone they admired.

(Park) Yeosang {Orphan}

[23 years old]

(based on Cassandra Cain, Orphan)

Backstory: His parents were contract killers from a secret society, and he was trained from a young age to be a highly-efficient killing machine. He was deprived of a normal childhood and did not fully learn to write or speak, hence his lisp when talking. Mingi had ran into a 19 year old Yeosang on accident while investigating the organisation's activities. He brought him back to the Birds of Prey because he felt sad seeing how isolated and hopeless Yeosang was with the organisation.

I have a lot of beloved niche Minecrafters I love and struggle to raise attention for so I have decided that I'm finally going to make this list, it’s an incomprehensible list hanging on by threads! but its a list!

Do you like Jschlatt? Do you like Evil, Capitalism, and Drama? Try William Strife! The Corporate Evil Overlord Capitalist with plenty of evil and dramatics a-plenty. One of the, if not the, original Minecraft Capitalist characters! With a hatred of magic, a love of money and tech, and the inability to ever be wrong Strife has managed to craft a hilarious yet oddly engaging parody of Capitalist America. Going strong for nearly a decade you may actually recognize him if you were in the Fallout scene back in the early 2010's for his guides! Strife has done plenty of Minecraft though and it's one of the things he's most known for. If you don't mind long run series mixed with some mod tutorial stuff I highly recommend checking out Solutions in Chaos for his infamously hilarious interactions with one Alex Parvis. Though if you don't have much time or tolerance for long run series his most recent series of Solutions and Order along with Crossroads may be something to enjoy. Or if you just like dick jokes you could just visit his streams, that's always an option as well.

Try Lyinginbedmon! Storyteller of a multiverse of themselves and our resident Master of Horror this Fox has dozens of stories and falls from glory to share. Do you wish to watch a Shinto Priest delve deeper into corrupting magics and slowly begin to wonder just how much the gods are hiding from them? Try Yokai Village! Do you want to watch a man trapped in early 2010's Nether struggle to survive and uncover a deeper story then they ever thought was there? Nether Expedition! Do you want to watch a Maid deal with the zombie apocalypse? Try Maid-ing Do! Do you want to watch a banished Werewolf Knight turned mercenary deal with their vampire racism? Knight of Fangs! Do you want to see the life and fall of the Witch in the Woods going from charming if odd neighbor to a betrayed horror monster seeking nothing but vengeance for what has done to them? Chaosville Season 2 and then Witch in the Woods! Or if you want something a bit shorter you can watch a Fae deal with a dragon witcher and strange magics effecting them, there is always the ongoing Clockwork & Memory.

Do you like Eret? Do you like a royal air and a sense of duty? Intense shitpost mixed with intense dramatic moments? Try Kirindave! Admittedly a bit of a weaker connection but that's just goes to show how enigmatic the Storm Sage really is. With a good sense of story telling and the charisma of something you really should not trust Kirin is quite a force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately they haven't done much Minecraft on their own channel in awhile and their content is much more focused on mod exploration along with being an admin of various servers then actual plot. However you will feel when that plot hits, there's a reason their fans tend to portray their character as a god. If you want to learn why you don't mess with the forest, I recommend Minecraft The Hard Way, but if you want a bit more plot in your learning of mods, Sunless is quite a good even if it never got a proper ending.

Do you like Ponk and Foolish? Do you like gorgeous builds mixed with strange yet curiosity inducing lore? Do you like mad science/doctors? Try Lucian V. Ghost! With several series under their belt and the smoothest British voice I've ever heard Lucian specializes in short series with lots of Lore and high production values. With their series Ghost Labs and the sequel and still in-progress Ghost Industries, enjoy videos about strange mods with an immensely hilarious cast. If you want something a bit more SMPish though, Chronobreach and it's on going sequel World of Madness is a great introduction to the strange and morally dubious lore of Ghost Industries. They also have the ongoing series Unlikely Reunion that is nothing but lore, and cool robots.

Strife didn’t even notice his roommate got off the bed, he really ought to be more perceptive.

“You're not alone here, y’know? If you're falling, we’ll be there to catch you,” Parvis talks sincerely, forever the optimist, and honestly?

It’s almost impressive the speed in which Martyn breaks down after that.

Parts of it are horrifying, and they react accordingly, responding to Martyn sacrificing a person he cares for on an altar with dread only ex-blood mages can have, connecting dots and filling in the picture of how what happened in those two months and week or so after affected Martyn as it had, made him act the way he did.

Keeping Appearances

Another little ficlet based on @fighteramy ’s Lab Buddies AU.

Everything was going great. Hundreds of billionaires were here to congratulate Strife for the new Strife Solutions smartphone. Strife was proud of the design and even more prideful of his keynote speech. People were interested and critics on Twitter were already praising the company for making such an ingenious design.

Then he showed up.

As soon as everyone saw him, reporters turned their cameras and mics to ask him why he was here and if he supported the entire operation. He (of course) grinned and nodded saying how it’ll really increase communication between Yoglabs staff and made a joke on how it might beat them out for Tech-y Awards.

Everyone and their dog knew about the tense relationship Stirfe Solutions had with Yoglabs. They were now in a mutual partnership, but only because both parties benefited from it. Yoglabs got better connection throughout their networks and Strife had a lot more promotional deals and funding. Well, maybe not as much funding, but more than what he had gotten prior.

“Look at him, the smug bastard.” Strife growled behind stage as he fixed his tie.

His intern, Parvis (whom he had also unfortunately gotten from the partnership), only shrugged. “C'mon, at least he showed up.”

Strife glared at him. “Only  because he wants to look like the better person since I missed the Charity Ball last May.”

“You were sick, Strifey. Everyone knows that.”

Strife’s nostrils flared at the nickname and waved his hand dismissively. “Doesn’t matter, and I don’t pay you to give me nicknames, Parvis.”

Parvis only laughed. “You don’t pay me at all. I can call you whatever I want.”

Strife made a noise of disagreement, but did not comment. Parvis looked back at the man in question.

“You’re gonna have to talk to him.” He noted. “He’s a distinguished guest.”

Strife downed a glass of bourbon. “Shut up, Parv.” He muttered.

The two finally stepped out from backstage and were swarmed by press. Strife didn’t mind, it took some of his focus off of his worst enemy. At first the questions were some he anticipated, like “What are your predictions for business sales this year?” Or “Mr. Strife, what makes this year’s edition better than last years?”

Then one reporter opened the can of worms.

“Mr. Strife, are you aware of Xephos’ arrival?” A reporter asked. “Did you invite him?”

All reporters stopped their questions about the new phone and looked up for his answer. Strife mentally cursed and smiled stiffly.

“Of course I’m aware. And I did invite him.” He said. “Now, are there any-”

“Mr. Strife, what are your thoughts on the recent fires in the city? Are they connected?”

Strife began to sweat. “It isn’t really my place to say-”

“How long is this partnership going to last between you two going to last?”

Strife opened his mouth to answer, but someone beat him to it.

“For as long as William wants it to. It’s his company.” An English accent answered. For the first time in his life, Strife was thankful for Xephos’ intrusion.

All the cameras and reporters turned around to see the Yoglabs CEO standing behind them. The press parted like the red sea as the man stepped forward to greet his business partner with a wide grin and bright eyes that Strife often saw in his nightmares.

“Your presentation was lovely, Will.” Xephos complimented.

Strife smiled fakely. “Thank you, Lewis.” He said stiffly. “Where’s Simon?”

“He felt a little ill. So I told him to stay home.” Xephos replied.

Strife clenched his fist behind his back. That wasn’t good. Simon always served as a buffer between him and Xephos. He hoped the press would be enough to protect him from the spaceman if need be.

“Will you two be sitting together?” One of the people asked.

Xephos’ smile faltered for a second as he and Strife met each other's eyes. Strife swallowed down the cruel laughter met with the question. Them? Sit together? Never.

“I would think Strife would-” Xephos started but was cut off, surprisingly.

“Of course they are. What a fantastic way to show the peace between the two companies!” Another said.

“Actually, I think we-” Strife tried to say but was drowned out in the commotion of two business rivals sitting together over dinner.

His eyes met Xephos’ and the two had the same grieving thought. Do I have to?

“Well, let’s find a seat, William.” Xephos sighed, his smile growing weary.

“I have one in the middle actually.” Strife said, gesturing over to it. It felt like he was pointing at his own grave.

Xephos nodded, a pained look on his face as they moved to take their seats. They walked side by side so no one could hear their next conversation.

“Well done, Strife. Now we’re forced to spend 3 hours together.” Xephos muttered quietly.

“Me?! You didn’t have to come! I never even sent you an invite!” Strife hissed.

“It’s called ‘keeping appearances.’” Xephos snarled back. “Something you obviously know nothing about. Remember the vacant seat at the Charity Ball?”

“I was sick.”

“You know, I never have to worry about illnesses.” Xephos started, his voice changing entirely to something much more sinister. “You should really invest in a-”

“No!” Strife said, almost too loudly. People looked over for a split second before turning back to the tables. He looked Xephos in the eyes and tried again. “No. Not now, not ever will I invest in one of those.”

Xephos shrugged. “Fair enough, I suppose.” He answered. And just like that, the sinister undertone was gone. “If this goddamn place doesn’t serve gin,” he muttered, looking around.

“Heaven forbid.” Strife said distastefully. “What would you ever do if not completely drunk?”

Xephos scowled “I’d probably realize Strife Solutions has been a pain in my side far too long.” He threatened.

Strife decided to keep quiet on that one.

They finally sat down and ordered, and thankfully there was plenty of gin to go around. Strife stuck with water, wanting to keep his head moderately clear for now. One drink too many could mean the end of his company.

“The decor in here is quite drab, isn’t it?” Xephos commented. “The bland gold color makes me feel like I’m at someone’s 50th-anniversary party.”

That was something Strife could agree on. The entire place looked hideous. “I let Parv take care of decorations. Obviously a mistake on my part.”

“I’ve made that mistake only once,” Xephos said, shivering slightly. “Blue and yellow do not go well together, and Simon does not understand that.”

“I remember that,” Strife said, chuckling despite himself. “That feels like years ago.”

“Might’ve been,” Xephos said, looking at his gin. “I’ve lost count nowadays.”

Again, Strife said nothing. That party was 18 years ago. He was still in high school when he read about that.

Xephos checked his watch. “This is going to be a long night.”

“You’re telling me,” Strife scoffed.

Silence fell on the table. There was nothing left to talk about. Occasionally Strife would feel Xephos’ gaze on him like a fox preys on a rabbit. Those piercing red and blue eyes searching for a moment to strike and devour.

“Oh, I’ve been meaning to ask you,” Xephos said so suddenly it almost made Strife choke on his water. “Do you remember that bottle of gin you gave to me when we signed that partnership agreement?”

Strife’s blood went cold. “I gave you a bottle of Gin?” He said, keeping his voice steady.

“Yes, you said it was a special brew,” Xephos replied. “Funny thing, I finally cracked that bottle open the other day and took a couple sips. It tasted really odd. The next thing I know, I’m in the infirmary with ten doctors swarming around me.”

Strife gripped his glass. He had completely forgotten about that. That was before he figured out how Yoglabs hasn’t had a change in leadership since it was created.

“They told me, and you’re going to laugh at this,” Xephos continued, putting a hand over his mouth as he chuckled. “They told me I had been poisoned.”

The spaceman then shook his head. “But of course that’s ridiculous, right? You, trying to kill me?” He laughed. “What a silly thought.”

Strife felt sweat bead around his forehead. He opened his mouth multiple times to try to say something, anything to save his sorry ass, but cold red eyes kept him pinned down and unable to say a word.

The fake laughter immediately stopped and any instance of a friendly conversation disappeared. Xephos glared at Strife and the businessman hoped that they hadn’t developed some kind machine that makes looks actually kill you.

“I’ve been really tolerant towards you, William. The only reason you’re here today is that I let you get here.” Xephos hissed.

Strife mustered what courage he could and scoffed. “One day you won’t be able to say that. Even relics like you fade with time.” He growled out, keeping his voice steady.

Xephos only sneered. “I have all the time in the world, William. I wish you could say the same.” His face changed again and Strife saw that there was no blue left in those cold eyes of his.

Strife only laughed. “When you finally die, I hope you end up in heaven so I can be the one to kick your sorry ass back to hell.”

“Wishful thinking, William.” Xephos snarled. “You should save those wishes for something much more efficient. You’re gonna need them.”

“Is that a threat, Xephos?” Strife hissed, balling the tablecloth in his hand.

“It’s a promise. Don’t fuck with me, Strife.” Xephos said, standing and grabbing his drink. “Or you’ll only end up with your face in the dirt.”

As if on some sort of cue, Xephos’ phone rang loudly. The spaceman glared at it before sighing and raising it to his ear. “Consider this your final warning.” He snarled before turning on his heel and answering the phone.

Strife let go of the table cloth, letting out a deep, stress-filled sigh before standing up and walking out of the ballroom. He wasn’t hungry anymore, and he certainly didn’t feel like socializing any further.

One day, perhaps, he could sleep at night without seeing those cold red eyes in his dreams. But today, he figured, was not going to be one of those days.

The US flag which opens this episode is distinctly … off. It’s actually a blend of the current flag and Dreyfuss Corp’s logo. That can’t be good. Neither is it good when we discover Malcolm (Jeremy Davies) is interviewing a considerably older, manacled and damaged Ichabod Crane (Thomas Mison). As Crane is dragged away, Malcolm is awakened by Jobe (Kamar de los Reyes), and he relays his vision of running America in far better fashion.

Molly (Oona Yaffe) and Crane are at a location to see a star – Logan McDonald (Robbie Kay) They wrestle over his cell phone. There’s a lovely little play on The Who’s “My Generation” which mystifies Molly, but amuses Diana (Janina Gavankar) and me. Logan arrives, making Molly’s day by taking a selfie with her, and then he promptly passes out while mysterious runes show up traced in fire on his arm.

  Back in Chez Thomas, they have installed security, both standard and mystical. Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood) places a rune in the kitchen to protect them. She asks if she can spend time with Molly.

Alex (Rachel Melvin) and Jake (Jerry MacKinnon) decide to give a dating app a try and are supposed to meet their dates at a local bar. Alex’s date is exceptionally sweaty and apparently juvenile, as he shows off a video that he just watched. Alex unceremoniously dumps him and, as she leaves, her sweaty date passes out. Jake, on the other hand, although stood up, has a way cool hat. Jake also lets the bartender know he’s got Alex’s back.

Jake is clearly a germophobe, although who could blame him? At the hospital, they run into Crane, who came in to check on Logan. Alex’s sweaty date utters a creepy, growly statement and the spontaneously combusts, taking some poor nurse with him.

Back in the vault, the team discusses that there are many of these cases appearing all over DC. Crane is reminded of a prior outbreak of illness, coinciding with a bunch of fires. They have a record by Paul Jennings (Zae Jordan), an amazing individual who took care of people who had “fire flu.” Jennings identified that the plague was actually being spread by reading a pamphlet. Alex remembers that Sweaty Date had watched a truly viral video by Logan MacDonald. Diana, in a panic, calls Jenny and Molly to make sure that Molly has not watched the video.

Jenny is working with Molly to help her see her path.

Jake follows Alex and sees her breath steaming. He can tell that Alex watched the video and she’s infected.

Crane tries to get Washington residents’ attention by loudly proclaiming in public. Not successfully.

Back in the Vault, Alex ducks Jake and the team by going in the tunnels to hide. She hears a voice and heads towards it. Although panicking, Jake is helped by Crane to focus and find Paul Jennings’ notebook. It turns out that Jennings was part of a team of four: made up of Davy Crockett (Daniel Parvis), Samuel Wilson (Rick Espaillat) and Sacajawea (Dayana Rincon). The demon is identified as a djinn (or, as we are more familiar with, a genie). The A-team studied and determined that they needed to track the demon, and they called up a storm to save Washington. Sam Wilson died, but Jake is determined that Alex will not suffer the same fate.

  In the tunnels, there is a room with many cylinders. The djinn, wearing an outfit, is calling the infected to burn for him, and shows flames surrounding his face.

  Jenny and Molly look at the items Jenny’s collected and Jenny explains that this is a way of identifying her path. There is no wrong choice, but Jenny is very relieved when Molly chooses the bowl, which symbolizes the Oracle. Molly can see into people’s souls. Molly runs the pestle around the edge of the bowl and falls into a trance. In her vision, she sees the aged and chained Crane.

Crane is determined and thinks it’s his role to Witness the curse and so he chooses to view the video, but Jake has already watched it. Jake experiences a vision and can tell where Alex is. Jake is adamant that they save Alex and asks that they maintain the integrity of his toy collection if he dies. They go in, seeing both Logan and Alex. Diana is able to inject Alex with the cure, but Jake is drawn ever closer to the fire collector. Crane strips two power cables and, as Alex knocks Jake aside, electrocutes the monster. This breaks his hold over the crowd.

Alex is incredibly touched that Jake saved her. Crane and Diana come in and Jake shows them the picture of the A-team that he has located. Crane is subdued. He shows Diana that he has a letter of marque putting him in charge of the A-team’s (the Vault’s) Agency and he’s very worried he will end up getting them killed. But Diana reminds him that it’s really leadership.

The new team takes a selfie using the “cheese” of yore, which is actually “prunes.” Jenny warns Diana that Molly saw Crane in a vision which frightened her and that he was old and tired and very afraid. They are sure Dreyfuss is behind this. Dreyfuss is in his lair, designing the new Dreyfuss American flag. We see that Dreyfuss recovered Logan, who is still altered and is going to be a secret weapon.

Grade B+

This episode brought forth a new storyline of far future Dreyfuss and future Crane, who appears to be worse for wear. It would seem that it’s not useless for Molly to see this future, meaning she must be able to alter it. It was interesting to get the background on  Jennings’ team, and to see the care that every one of the current team shares for each other. I continue to appreciate that Agent Thomas trusts Crane and, more importantly, trusts Molly with Jenny. Alex and Jake very firmly bonded this episode. The question is – will it remain strongly platonic? I think they see themselves more as “brothers in arms” than “lovers in arms.” Interestingly, Molly has seen this corporate future, and so has Dreyfuss, and Jenny has shared this with Diana, but it doesn’t appear anyone has told Crane! I’m guessing this will come back to haunt them.
