I can’t with the “soulmates mind-reading” trope anymore. At this point it feels like a shortcut to intimacy in a lot of love stories I’ve been reading. Why write your characters slowly growing closer to one another through quiet moments of observation and actual verbal communication when you can just have them text with their brains? Kill me now.

“How romantic, the love interest knows exactly what the heroine is thinking 🥺❤️” Yeah of course they do. Because the author gave them mind-reading powers that allow them to instantly know the contents of the other person’s mind, it isn’t because they know them. This doesn’t make the relationship more compelling, it just lets the author cut corners on relationship development and manufacture intimacy through a super special magical bond.

No offense to ppl who actually like fourth wing but it sound like a rough draft or bullet point for a book strung together. I don’t get why ppl were frothing at the mouth over this book

I will have to read a romantasy book written by a straight man or a lesbian someday just to see if a certain tone is different because a lot of the romantasy books written by women that are attracted to men are just…sometimes…interesting in a bad way

Reading fourth wing has made me realise I define slow-burn very different to other people, because that book was not slowburn.

When I say slow-burn enemies-to-lovers I need detesting, hating each other - the sight of the other person makes you physically sick or trembling with rage, or some ungodly combination of both. I don’t want admiration from afar, I want plotting to murder the other in their sleep.

I need a slow-burn that lasts 3/4 of a book, if not an entire book - have me foaming at the mouth waiting for them to make a move, to brush hands at each other. I need pining in unspoken gestures loaded with meaning. I need flexed fingers when you touch and forcing yourself to pull away from the other. I don’t need smut by the end of a book and a sudden L-bomb, by any definition that is NOT slowburn

So, did anybody else have the writing advice "show don't tell" drilled into their head during school or did I just make that up?

I ask this cause my mom had told me that she was listening to this new book and it just really didn't interest her at all, and I had overheard some of the book earlier, and I agreed. The part I overheard was the exact quote, "... she did an impressive backflip...". I then said that it just didn't seem to be the style of writing that I like to read, cause it tells instead of shows. She then told me that she actually really liked the book and was trying to get me to read it cause I have a habit of not reading books she tells me I'm gonna like lol. She started talking about how my critique was unreasonable, because it's a book, they're gonna have to tell you everything, there is no show

I just feel like there were a couple better ways to say that the backflip was impressive, like describing the dangerous situation she did it in better or by having another character remark on the skill. Idk I really just wanna know if I'm insane and 'show not tell' was never writing advice but art and movie advice lol
