Fountain of Neptune, 1574 by Giacomo della Porta, Antonio Della Bitta, Gregorio Zappalà The basin of the Fontana del Nettuno, (without the sculptures), was designed in 1574 by Giacomo Della Porta. It was sponsored by pope Gregory XIII. For the next 300 years, the fountain survived without statues. The Fountain of Neptune. The fountain is in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. It was commissioned in 1565 and is made of bronze and marble. Baccio Bandinelli was responsible for the design of the fountain, however, he died before sculpting began. In his place, Bartolomeo Ammannati sculpted the fountain. The work was completed in 1574.
