Shoveling a path from the front door of our home in Fountain, Colorado, 1979. My dad was stationed at Peterson Air Force Base at the time, and since he was nearing the end of his military career, he and my mom had this house built in the 'burbs of Colorado Springs. It was a large, four-level (!) home with an unfinished, mostly concrete basement that my sister and I naturally cluttered with toys and games. My father toiled over the front yard on weekends, trying to grow Kentucky bluegrass, pounding stakes and twine around the tilled dirt so no one (mainly, me and my sister) would disturb the newly planted sections. He ended up getting transferred one more time, to Kansas, before the yard grew out. He later found out from a friend of a friend that the yard turned out being one of the most beautiful in the neighborhood.
