Houses still sit on their foundations, with a car (or two, or four) parked on the road outside as I walk past.

Birds sing from branches and bushes and rooftops. Dogs bark. Steam and smoke rise from chimneys.

The stream still flows greyish brown as I cross over, clogged with leaf shed and bracken and weeds.

My shoes still squeak when I turn on the ball of my foot. My raincoat still crinkles a little as I bend down.

The metal fence still sings when you run a stick across it.

So much is the same.

So much has been the same for. A while now.

I am walking to the supermarket, stick streaking dirt and grit along my hand.

And there is no one else here.

HINSDALE, N.H. (AP) — Geoffrey Holt was unassuming as the caretaker of a mobile home park in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, where he lived a simple, but curious life.

Residents would see Holt around town in threadbare clothes — riding his lawn mower, headed to the convenience store, parked along the main road reading a newspaper or watching cars pass.

He did odd jobs for others but rarely left town. Despite having taught driver’s ed to high schoolers, Holt had given up driving a car.

He opted for a bicycle instead and finally the mower.

His mobile home in the park was mostly empty of furniture — no TV and no computer, either. The legs of the bed went through the floor.

“He seemed to have what he wanted, but he didn’t want much,” said Edwin “Smokey” Smith, Holt’s best friend and former employer.

But Holt died earlier this year with a secret: He was a multimillionaire.

And what’s more, he gave it all away to this community of 4,200 people.

His will had brief instructions: $3.8 million to the town of Hinsdale to benefit the community in the areas of education, health, recreation and culture.

“I don’t think anyone had any idea that he was that successful,” said Steve Diorio, chairperson of the town selectboard who’d occasionally wave at Holt from his car.

“I know he didn’t have a whole lot of family, but nonetheless, to leave it to the town where he lived in ... It’s a tremendous gift.”

The money could go far in this Connecticut River town sandwiched between Vermont and Massachusetts with abundant hiking and fishing opportunities and small businesses.

It’s named for Ebenezer Hinsdale, an officer in the French and Indian Wars who built a fort and a grist mill.

In addition to Hinsdale’s house, built in 1759, the town has the nation’s oldest continually operating post office, dating back to 1816.

There’s been no formal gathering to discuss ideas for the money since local officials were notified in September.

Some residents have proposed upgrading the town hall clock, restoring buildings, maybe buying a new ballot counting machine in honor of Holt, who always made sure he voted.

Another possibility is setting up an online drivers’ education course.

Organizations would be be able to apply for grants via a trust through the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, drawing from the interest, roughly about $150,000 annually.

"Hinsdale will utilize the money left very frugally as Mr. Holt did,” said Kathryn Lynch, town administrator.

Holt’s best friend Smith, a former state legislator who became the executor of Holt’s estate, had learned about his fortune in recent years.

He knew Holt, who died in June at age 82, had varied interests, like collecting hundreds of model cars and train sets that filled his rooms, covered the couch and extended into a shed.

He also collected books about history, with Henry Ford and World War II among his favorite topics.

Holt had an extensive record collection too, including Handel and Mozart.

Smith also knew that Holt, who earlier in life had worked as a production manager at a grain mill that closed in nearby Brattleboro, Vermont, invested his money.

Holt would find a quiet place to sit near a brook and study financial publications.

Holt confided to Smith that his investments were doing better than he had ever expected and wasn’t sure what to to do with the money. Smith suggested that he remember the town.

“I was sort of dumbfounded when I found out that all of it went to the town,” he said.

One of Holt’s first investments into a mutual fund was in communications, Smith said. That was before cellphones.

Holt’s sister, 81-year-old Alison Holt of Laguna Woods, California, said she knew her brother invested and remembered that not wasting money and investing were important to their father.

“Geoffrey had a learning disability. He had dyslexia,” she said.

“He was very smart in certain ways. When it came to writing or spelling, he was a lost cause. And my father was a professor.

So, I think that Geoff felt like he was disappointing my dad. But maybe socking away all that money was a way to compete.”

She and her brother grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. Their father, Lee Holt, taught English and world literature at American International College.

Their mother, Margaret Holt, had a Shakespearean scholar for a dad.

She was an artist who “absorbed the values of the Quaker Society of Friends,” according to her obituary.

Both parents were peace activists who eventually moved to Amherst and took part in a weekly town vigil that addressed local to global peace and justice issues.

Their children were well-educated. Geoffrey went to boarding schools and attended the former Marlboro College in Vermont, where students had self-designed degree plans.

He graduated in 1963 and served in the U.S. Navy before earning a master’s degree from the college where his father taught in 1968.

In addition to driver’s ed, he briefly taught social studies at Thayer High School in Winchester, New Hampshire, before getting his job at the mill.

Alison remembers their father reading Russian novels to them at bedtime.

Geoffrey could remember all those long names of multiple characters.

He seemed to borrow a page from his own upbringing, which was strict and frugal, according to his sister, a retired librarian.

His parents had a vegetable garden, kept the thermostat low, and accepted donated clothes for their children from a friend.

She said Geoffrey didn’t need a lot to be happy, didn’t want to draw attention to himself, and might have been afraid of moving.

He once declined a promotion at the mill that would have required him to relocate.

“He always told me that his main goal in life was to make sure that nobody noticed anything,” she said, adding that he’d say “or you might get into trouble.”

They didn’t talk much about money, though he would ask her often if she needed anything.

“I just feel so sad that he didn’t indulge himself just a little bit,” she said.

But he never seemed to complain. He also always wasn’t on his own, either.

As a young man, he was briefly married and divorced.

Years later, he grew close to a woman at the mobile home park and moved in with her. She died in 2017.

Neither Alison nor Geoffrey had any children.

Holt suffered a stroke a couple of years ago and worked with therapist Jim Ferry, who described him as thoughtful, intellectual and genteel, but not comfortable with following the academic route that family members took.

Holt had developed mobility issues following his stroke and missed riding his mower.

“I think for Geoff, lawn mowing was relaxation, it was a way for him to kind of connect with the outdoors,” Ferry said.

“I think he saw it as service to people that he cared about, which were the people in the trailer park that I think he really liked because they were not fancy people.”

Residents are hoping Hinsdale will get noticed a bit more because of the gift.

“It’s actually a forgotten corner in New Hampshire,” said Ann Diorio, who’s married to Steve Diorio and is on the local planning board. “So maybe this will put it on the map a little bit.”

Vigorous stands of Japanese knotweed that are left to grow will overwhelm lightweight, unsubstantial and poorly built outbuildings/garages and garden sheds, greenhouses etc.

The invasive nature of the plant will ruin a garden or soft landscaped area. The amenity use of an outside space will be lost.

According to the U.K. Environment Agency’s “The Knotweed Code of Practice”, Japanese knotweed rhizomes can extend up to seven metres horizontally and three metres vertically from the last sign of visible surface growth.

This means that even if there is Japanese knotweed on your property a few metres from your house, the rhizome network could already be under your patio or house. Once it’s spread under your house, it can exploit small access areas and invade your home.

Shaky hands hold a burning cigarette, the forlorn ashes carried softly by the wind. He can feel the migraine forming where his brow is tightly knit, further aggravating his already tense state. His presence always choked you. Another sob escapes you.

Rick, your Rick, continues to be uncharacteristically quiet. Panic rises and replaces the sickness. What if he doesn’t love you anymore? Your breathing becomes uneven. What if he came here to tell you he was leaving you here? More tears blur your vision, and you can feel your lip curl with the impending cry you’re holding in.

“Are you— its fucking weird just standing there.” Rick finally speaks from behind you, his words cut the heavy tension that rests throughout the room like a second skin. Had you been able to lift your head you’d see him, a deep V-brow and clenched jaw, and your Rick’s arms crossed with obvious irritation etched across his unusually gaunt face. It must be the stress. Maybe his work is finally catching up with him. Your body vibrates, you wonder if it's the shock or perhaps the testosterone dogfight happening just a few feet above you.

Your eyes snap back towards Rick's lanky frame, your sudden eye contact seems to pull the hairline trigger on his sensitive state. He chooses to look down into his drink. Managing to find the confidence to face him again, you watch as Rick takes another swig of his flask. He continues to maintain an aggressive eye contact with your Rick. You’ve never seen him like this, so keyed up he’s practically vibrating. From the corner of your eye, Rick is trying to maintain his composure. His jaw is tight, and his right hand is clenching and unclenching. You wish you could hold it, hold him. Your skin is itching for his touch, his attention. You’re sure you look absolutely helpless, eyes wide and mouth gaping as your eyes flash between the two men before you.

“Yeah well it sure seemed to become—to be my business when she decided to squeeze that tight little pussy around my dick and call me daddy. Maybe you should've fucking shown her how dangerous space actually is.”

You can’t help the indignant yelp that slips at his comment, tears prick at the corners of your eyes. Unbelievable, the embarrassment that comes along with a situation like this. “Jesus fucking Christ Rick!” Anger surges through your body, coupled with the very thought of him branding you makes you lightheaded.

“Oh you don’t think I fucking saw?” There’s a twinge of pleasure in Rick’s voice, more malicious zeal than even the worst of your fights, “Your little toy over there puts out—fucks any Rick within her orbit, and man does she love my big fat cock hitting it from the back!”

Your Rick lets out a painful groan so quiet you’re not sure if you imagined it. You swear you’re gonna faint, the room is spinning. Blacks, grays, and bright blue hair swirl your vision. Your knees give out, and you hit the ground hard.

“Shit,” both Ricks murmur in unison, their attention suddenly drawn to you. The ground captures your focus as the storm of emotions swirl in your chest, choosing to settle deep in your stomach, you find the strength to lift yourself on shaky legs. Holding onto one of Rick’s shelves, you manage to pull yourself back up to full stature.

“I didn’t ask for any of this!” Raw emotion imbues your tone, and it seems to have the intended effect as both Ricks have the sense to look ashamed of themselves, even if it is brief. Rick opens and closes his mouth, a look torn between guilt and anger pushing and pulling for dominance. Your Rick snaps out of it first, he shoots you an apologetic look before returning to his petty fight.

“So you just respond to anything with a pulse and pussy that calls your name? What kind of idiot—you fucking dumbass, aren’t you always going on and on about how everyone in the universe wants to kill you?”

Bile bites at the bottom of your throat, every cell in your body feels like it's on fire. You’ve never been much of a drinker, but suddenly you’re fighting the urge to rip the flask out of Rick’s big hands. The struggle plays out in your head, favoring to ignore the looming assault keying up in front of you. Maybe you could get one hand around it, you muse. You don’t doubt Rick could and would have you on the floor in seconds. He can be quite strong when he wants to, the thought of him gripping you by the hair flashes briefly. Arousal simmers quietly replacing the bile that plagued you seconds ago. You shake your head slightly, as though it would sway the thought from your head completely.

“We may—we’re both Ricks, but that doesn’t mean I’m anything like you. And—and I fucking promise you pal, I’m not,” Your Rick speaks again, cutting the short silence. You watch as Rick takes another belligerent swig from his flask, you focus in, fixated on the dark liquor spilling out as he waves his arms around.

“You fucking—you got that right pal. What kind of Rick gets married? You could have any—any—anything you could’ve wanted in the galaxy. Sex, money, power, intelligence, and you chose this?” There’s a sneer in his voice as he gestures to where you’re standing, slightly behind your Rick. He must’ve moved in front when you zoned out, he’s always been animated when angry. Rick must see the hurt in your expression, if it bothers him he doesn’t show it in favor of turning away with a displeased expression and another swig of his flask. That’s what he does best, hurts you and leaves you to nurse the pain.

“Oh yeah?” Your Rick’s voice is dripping with satire, “What about Diane?”

Rick throws his flask across the room with an anger you’ve never seen before, you flinch hard as it narrowly misses you, liquid sloshing against the plaster and onto the floor.

“You don’t get to talk about her,” he’s practically growling, “Why are you still here? There isn’t anything left for you.”

“Jesus Christ you’re asking me while I’m still here? Wouldn’t you know best fucking chasing after, and killing every Rick you could get your hands on after her? You of all people should know why I’m fucking here.”

“This is nothing like that!” Rick’s chest is heaving, both of his hands are clenched so tightly his knuckles are white. Your feet seem to have a mind of their own as you continue to quietly back yourself into the corner of the garage. It's almost completely dark save for a few quiets lights stored here and there, the shadows on the wall appear as malicious as their counterparts. The green underlight shadows both men with foreboding venomousness.

“You stole her,” your Rick steps forward, as if challenging the Rick across from him, “You stole her from me and—and you have the fucking balls to say its nothing like that? You destroyed half the galaxy for her, and you think I wouldn't do the same, asshole?”

Your Rick shifts to look at you, mouth set in a grim line, before turning back to face Rick head on.

“I guess it is nothing like that, because I didn’t let her die.”

The weight of his words don’t have enough time to register before Rick lunges across the room, your Rick manages to duck under his outstretched arm and launch himself over to the workbench. You watch as he hits the switch activating the Home Surveillance Shutdown, and look on with horror as thick metal shields enclose you with the violent men before you. Rick’s momentum collides with the shelving unit briefly before he pushes off; you shriek, startled by the violence and the items that avalanche upon you with the careless shove from Rick.

Your Rick manages to land a punch and you shudder at the crack that follows. It doesn’t deter the other Rick, however, as he manages to catch your Rick by the shoulder and throw him into the washing machine that sits in the corner opposite you. It seems to spur your Rick on as he uses the leverage to catapult back into the fight, landing another punch this time on Rick’s stomach. He finishes with a kick to the groin, and you cry out as Rick howls with pain. They’ve never been known not to fight dirty. As the thought rings through your head, Rick punches upward into your Rick’s crotch.

“Fuck!” It comes out of your mouth as strangled garbage, although they’ve turned a deaf ear to you, choosing to circle each other in the small open space in the middle of the garage.

“I’m gonna fucking kill you,” Rick sneers before closing the gap once more, you watch with horror as he manages to get a hold on your Rick, you try to force your eyes closed but with justified panic they remain wide open. As though your prayers had been answered, your Rick elbows other Rick in the stomach, and luckily he slips through the loose chokehold. Dominating his way on top landing blow after blow. You’re slightly amazed—and aroused— not that you would ever, ever admit that to him. Just as you think it will be over, a long hand snakes its way into your Rick’s hair, and pulls. Another scream rips from your throat as his skull collides with the concrete, a thick crack echoes across the unforgiving pavement. You can’t help the sob that escapes, as Rick pushes his limp body aside. He turns to look at you with a hard gaze.

“You’re not even as sorry as you’re gonna be, princess.”

You cry out for a third, and final time as a fist connects with Rick’s temple. You can’t believe your eyes as he hits the floor, your Rick following on top with a second wind and more blows. You watch as other Rick’s fists decrescendo from the fight, until he’s nothing but a couple of groans and a stone cold glare.

Your Rick finally stands with a moan, and he spits on the man spread before him.

“Fucking pussy,” he murmurs before turning to you, eyes impossibly soft, “Hi, honey.”

He extends a hand, obviously in too much pain to come to you. You rise hesitantly, you now understand why he kept you separated from his work. He never, ever wanted you in a position such as this, nor see him like this. Everything will be different. The portal home glows with promise.

Blue curtains flow with a soft breeze. Blood is casually splattered against matching silk sheets, looking natural as if it had been sewn into the fabric. A gun lies carelessly tossed beneath a shimmering golden frame, a soft glow emitted from the rays of sun peeking past the shattered frame. Soft eyes flit about in a haze, cathedral like ceilings suffocating with all the colors one could imagine. Your body is too heavy, your voice stuck like saccharine syrup choking your throat.

Doesn’t take much, some days, to set her off. Dani hates that about her anxiety--hates that she can, sometimes, go weeks without a flare up of panic tightening around her throat, and then something tiny will do the trick without warning.

Something minuscule and pointless and normal will knock her right off the rails.

Something like a thunderstorm.

One minute, she’s gazing out the window, her eyes landing on a bike tipped over in the rain. One minute, she’s exasperated--how many times, Flora, have we talked about taking care of our things?--shaking her head. Out the door, she thinks, and into the squall. It won’t take long to wheel the little pink bicycle to safety. She’ll get wet. So what? Little rain never hurt anyone. 

She’s trying to decide exactly how to go about talking to Flora this time--she hates falling back on guilt, on yelling, on any of the techniques her mother so prized--when the thunder crashes. Not above her, by the sound of it, but around--and for a moment, her feet are planted on the mat of a parked car. For a moment, the sky is empty, and the light is gone, and there is only a crash, a deafening violence, echoing around and around and around.

She is swaying, the bike forgotten, her memory bound up in a momentary decision. Fuck. You. Danielle. A door, swinging open. A man, stepping out.

A crash--a crash--violence no one intended, violence no one can take back--echoing around and around and--

“Poppins?”

Not his voice, nothing like it. Startled and soft, almost lost under the cataclysmic sluice of water pounding down on their heads. A hand, folding around her wrist, as eyes reflecting the stormy sky seek hers out. 

“Poppins, c’mon, you’re gonna catch cold.”

She’s moving, she registers, only because she’s being guided. Her head is pounding, full of nothing but the crash, the violence, the echo of it slamming shut on potential--for forgiveness, for life, for the person she’d once been. The person he’d been. She’s moving, and she’s breathing in heaving gasps, and there is that voice, blisteringly gentle: “Poppins, c’mon. Little further. That’s it.”

A door, swinging open.

They’re standing, she realizes, in the shed. Flora’s bike is there--Jamie must have grabbed it with her free hand, hauled it along as easily as she’d urged Dani. Jamie, soaked to the skin, her t-shirt plastered to her body, looking at her like she’s well and truly lost it. 

“Sorry,” Dani says--tries to say--gasps instead. She’s shivering all over, and knows it has nothing at all to do with the chill. “Sorry. I don’t--I don’t know what happened--”

“S’okay.” Jamie, brow furrowed, is still looking at her. Not with judgment, Dani senses, though she’s almost too mortified to care. Just looking, like she’s not entirely sure what she’s just rescued Dani from.

Dani isn’t entirely sure, either.

“I--needed to put the bike away,” she says. Reflexive. Explain yourself, Danielle. Explain it all away, and smile, and pretend nothing went wrong in the first place. Except Jamie, though nodding, is still looking at her. 

“Well. That’s done.”

Dani squeezes her fists, head bowed. Water drips from the end of her nose, from the loose fall of her hair. “It was--I don’t know. The noise. Sometimes, the noise reminds me--”

She pulls up short. Jamie doesn’t know, she reminds herself. Jamie has no idea.

“I had a fiancé,” she says, and can’t bring herself to follow through. “Before. Not anymore. Just--sometimes it reminds me--”

It’s coming out all wrong. Jamie’s going to get the wrong idea about Eddie, about the engagement, about all of it. Jamie, at any moment, is going to say something that will make it all worse. 

Except Jamie isn’t speaking. Jamie is only watching, one hand extended as though to a trembling dog found cowering beneath a bush. 

“You don’t have to explain it.”

Dani’s head comes up sharply. Jamie, hair a tangle of damp curls, face serious, shrugs.

“Isn’t my business. You okay now?”

No, thinks Dani wildly. Can’t remember when I was okay. 

“Cold,” she says instead, and it’s not the right thing--not enough--but Jamie nods anyway. Takes a halting step forward. Both arms are extended now, and Dani finds herself walking into them without question. Finds herself wrapping her arms around a slim frame, folding into Jamie’s surprisingly strong grasp around her shoulders. 

She’s never touched Jamie before. Not really. A grab of sleeve, a brush of hands in the kitchen once or twice--nothing like this. Nothing like her face bent against Jamie’s shoulder, her body trembling as Jamie squeezes tighter, as if trying to siphon warmth into her through nothing more than an embrace.

It’s working, if she’s honest. Little by little, the tremors are fading. Little by little, she finds herself drawing full breaths, her chest pushing out against Jamie’s in a steady rhythm. 

They’re breathing together, she realizes--wonders if Jamie did that on purpose. If her every deep breath was intended to catch Dani’s, to reroute panicked gasps into full inhalations. She wonders if Jamie knows what it’s like to spiral this way, and how to crawl back from the edge. 

The shivers are ceasing, the chill in her bones replaced by a warmth that has little to do with a body pressed to her own, but Jamie isn’t letting go. Jamie is making a soft sound under her breath--words, maybe, or a song--and her hands are rubbing up and down Dani’s back. They’re the same height, she registers for the first time, turning her face against Jamie’s cheek. They’re the same height, and couldn’t be more different, and Jamie is holding her like it’s up to Dani to decide when this stops.

Jamie is holding her, murmuring against her ear, and Dani’s suddenly wondering if she could stay here forever. In this shed. Listening to the rain pound the roof. Listening to her own heartbeat in her ears. 

Jamie, who has barely spoken to her beyond casual conversation, holding her like there’s no question at all to it.  

All day, they could be standing here--all day, all night--and it wouldn’t feel like too much. Not so long as Dani keeps her eyes shut, smelling rain on Jamie’s skin, the roll of her voice nearly lost beneath the storm. All day, all night, she could stand here in this embrace, and it would feel...it would be like...

Like I was here all along, she thinks, almost woozy with the idea. Like we’ve both been here the whole time. 

Like time isn’t a straight line at all, but a untempered, winding creature doubling back on itself. Like this was always going to happen, because it already has, because Jamie has always been--

She takes a step back at last, head bent. Jamie’s arms fall away without a word, and Dani realizes Jamie is not stepping backward. Jamie is standing perfectly still, her hands sliding into her pockets. 

“All right?”

Not quite trusting herself, Dani nods. The panic, as quickly as it’d come on, is gone now. Something else is waiting in its place--something warm in the pit of her stomach, dangerously unfamiliar. Something that wants only to move forward again, to loop her arms back around a slim frame standing just her height. 

“Storms,” Jamie says, almost idly--just as she’d once said kids. “Too much sometimes. Even for me.”

Wouldn’t be, Dani thinks recklessly. If you just had someone to hang onto whenever they came around. An insane thought. A silly thought with no foundation at all. 

In silence, they lean against the shed door, waiting for the rain to fade away.
