Finally yapping about my foster kid Ponyboy au!!

It was just a year ago when Ponyboy lost his mom, she was a real nice woman. She taught him how to read, and watched sunsets, and told him how it was okay to cry every once in a while. She died when some guy came into her workplace and robbed the joint, shooting her and a few customers dead. It was all over the news. When his mom died he was transferred into OKDHS’s, or, Oklahoma Department of Human Services’s foster system. In his one year in the system he’s already been in 3 houses and in between a few Boys Homes. As he’s been to more houses, they’ve only gotten worse. He’d been in the first house for a month and they were okay, he could just tell their priorités weren’t helping a depressed boy get over his parents death. He couldn’t blame them. He was gotten rid of once their younger son decided he didn’t like having an older brother. The second family expected a toddler. He’s arguably *not* a toddler. They didn’t like him, and they ignored him. He stayed there for 3 months being ignored and basically living on his own. The final placement he was at for 6 months. They definitely didn’t like him, and he could tell from the recently healed scar on his arm. Yeah. After that house they decided it wasn’t safe for him to be at a boys home In between, with a whole lot of rough housing boys and rowdy teens. He was sent to an emergency placement. That’s when he met the Curtis Brothers. Their parents died recently too he found out, and the oldest only became an emergency foster parent because he needed to prove he could take care of his brother by taking care of any emergency placements. They hadn’t had one until he showed up, he kinda felt bad. He ruined their dynamic.

I really want an outsiders fanfic where Pony isn’t a Curtis by blood (foster kid, runaway, shit family whatever I love all those tropes) and obviously the Curtis gang adopts him and then Darry and Soda actually adopt him BUT I want him to get close to Darry before Soda. I want soda to want to keep him because this snarky, beaten down kid is the first person to make Darry full on belly laugh since their parents died. I want this version of Ponyboy to be the thing that helps pull Darry out of his depression. I want Soda to come back from work one day and see his twenty year old brother laughing and joking with a scrawny kid and actually acting like a 20 year old and deciding right then and there that this kid HAS to be family.

Micah winced at the alcohol sting. The cut on his temple was nasty, probably could use a stitch or two. The thought was almost funny ‘cause he sure as hell didn’t have enough money to afford stitches. It’d leave a tough scar. Good.

“I said I’m fine, okay? This ain’t my first rumble,”

Charlie’s face was pinched tight, lips pressed in a thin line. He was kneeled in front of the toilet, where Micah was leaned over himself. One hand on Micah’s knee with his thumb rubbing back and forth.

He hissed at the next sting. It did nothing for his bitch of a headache.

The rumble did a number on him, he’ll admit it. He could hold his own fine — more than fine. And he did— but those football Socs could throw a hard punch. It made something rough boil in the pit of his stomach.

“Don’t care. You shouldn’t go out getting all hurt like this.”

It felt like a stab to his pride. He’s been doing this for seventeen years— yearly eighteen. He can handle himself. He don’t need taking care for.

“I fight, Charlie, that’s what I’ve always fucking done. I don’t need a babysitter,” He bit it out in quick barks. Everything felt red and hot.

“That’s not—”

“I’ve done this a million times alone—” He tried to swat the bottle out of Charlie‘s hand, but Charlie pulled away quick. It just made him madder. “And I don’t need someone to fucking lick my wounds for me.”

“That‘s not what I’m trying to do!” Charlie snapped back. Blood rushed in Micah’s ears. He could feel the anger on face through heat and the strain on his scraps. It burned

“It fucking feels like it,”

“I’m trying to help, okay?”

Micah couldn’t even process the sweep of desperation in Charlie’s tone before the dam burst.

“I don’t need help, damn it!” He was too loud, he was gonna wake the kids up. Fuck. “I’ve been out in Tulsa my whole damn life, and y'know who looked out for me? No one. I sure as hell don’t need someone to act like I’m some baby! You weren’t out there fighting with me so you can fuck off trying to help now!”

He knew he didn’t mean the words as soon as he said ‘em. Charlie didn’t need to fight in that rumble. He didn’t think he wanted him to. That night was ‘bout the bloodiest night that he’d seen in a long time. He gets why. Ponyboy and Johnny Cade’s face are still circling the papers every morning, calling for their arrests. Those Socs aren’t letting ‘em go for nothing.

He didn’t want Charlie caught up in that at all.

The blood in his ears and pounding in his head was so loud, Charlie had to squeeze his knees for Micah to realize he’d been talking.

His jaw was set hard and his eyes were so damn sure. But trying to get through a brick wall with words did nothing. Something inside of Micah ached. Was that all he was now?

“I ain’t a fighter, Micah,”

He swallowed hard. He hadn’t met what he said. “I don’t need you to be one, Char. You just—”

“No, look, I— I don’t get this fighting stuff. I wasn’t raised with it, I’ve never fought a fight like— like that shit in my life, okay? That’s not ever in the cards. I’m useless right now and seeing you all beat and bruised makes me feel sick or somethin’. I gotta…” He swallowed thickly and the frustration on his face broke into something raw. His breath trembled. “I gotta do something to help. I can’t fight and I care about you so—”

They both paused at the confession. Charlie’s brown eyes were wide and Micah was sure his were too.

What’s been going on between ‘em hasn’t necessarily been left unaddressed, but it’s been left unspoken. They both know. It’s obvious as hell to the both of ‘em. It hasn’t been spoken not because of fear, but survival.

“I know,” Micah whispered, almost a croak. Hope sparked to life in Charlie’s eyes. “I do, too, I…”

He didn’t know what else to say. He didn’t know what he could say without crossing some unspoken line.

Micah has only focused on the important things— his family and their survival. That’s the whole point of his fighting, his work, his life. He’s never wanted. Not like this. Not in such a selfish, indulgent way that feels like something stabbing through his heart.

Nothing else could be said from him.

Charlie smiled tentatively. There was something fragile in the air.

“Just let me do this.” He whispered. “For me. Seeing you like this all alone makes my heart feel like it was in that rumble, too.”

Charlie’s eyes practically pleaded with his resolve. He wanted to shut the door in his face and gasp through the pain and slip into bed next to his siblings and pretend like nothing hurt until he couldn’t anymore. He was used to being alone. What was one more night?

But another part, something so deeply pushed down, he barely even knew it was there— longed. For Charlie’s smile, his touch and soft hands on his face, his lips on his head, whispered words only the two of them knew. It was a terrible part of him but Charlie didn’t care.

So. Against all his seventeen years of fighting, Micah let his wall break down and he nodded.

“Thank you,” He croaked. He wasn’t going to cry, but the emotion was there all the same.

Charlie’s smile was gentle, so sure, so caring. He could tell Micah all the world would be fine and he’d believe him. He picked the bottle of alcohol up off the floor and raised a hand to Micah’s cheek.

His palm was soft. It just grazed against his face, but for once, Micah let himself lean into the touch until Charlie’s hand cupped his cheek. Charlie rubbed a thumb over his cheekbone. His dark eyes reflected the bathroom lights.

God, Charlie could break open Micah’s every defense and he doesn’t even know if he could put up a good fight.

“Thank you,” Charlie whispered back into Micah’s eyes. His lips parted— and he picked up the wash rag.

This got long cause I am a yapper at heart. Time for poor Steve to crash and burn, also I’m gonna make the baby seven months because they legit don’t do anything but like cry until then and I also don't actually have experience with babies that young (I didn't meet my cousins until around the 6 month mark cause they live out of town and the parents also were also anxious about people)

So we’ll say Steve’s life has honestly been going super well lately. Him and Evie have been looking for apartments (I imagine this happens around a year after canon) and they are THIS close to convincing Soda to move in with them now that Ponyboy is doing better. He’s about to quit the DX for a better paying mechanic job closer to the westside and he’s excited to be out of his house but still be close enough to be able to make sure his dad doesn’t completely waste away.

And then Steve is at home by himself, cleaning the house and just generally taking advantage of having it to himself and there’s a knock on the door. He opens it and there’s a baby girl (I’ve decided it’s a girl lol) sitting in a blanket and there’s a box with enough supplies to last two days. Steve spends a bit trying to find who left the baby but decides he has other priorities at the moment-. The baby comes with a note explaining she belongs to one of his dads million one night stands and flings, and at this point Steve is understandably freaking the fuck out. Thankfully at this point the baby isn’t awake so Steve kind of just like- lays her on a towel on the floor and goes to figure out how baby formula works and also starts going through all the legal documents that were dropped off. He knows at this point that this is probably gonna end with him taking care of the baby but frankly he’s choosing not to think about that.

Eventually Soda and Evie go to check on him cause he’s been essentially radio silent all day. By the time that happens the baby is awake and will not stop crying no matter what Steve does. So they walk in to Steve with a baby and on like the verge of tears and it takes a bit for Steve to be able to tell them what’s happening. Steve and Evie take care of the baby for a while so he can go calm down and process what’s happening. 

I haven’t thought much about what happens after that point yet, but I know Steve gets even more hellbent on moving out ASAP. Him and his dad have a lot of arguments about the baby (his dad wants to just send her to foster care but Steve refuses to let that happen especially when his dad isn’t even the one dealing with the kid anyway) and I think Steve eventually does actually make the choice to cut his dad off (it takes a couple years tho) because he doesn’t want the baby to grow up around him. Steve’s mental state also goes down the drain for a while but Darry can see him falling apart at the seams, and knows how he feels, so he’s hellbent on making sure Steve at least kind of gets the support system he never did. Evie is also a saint during all this for the record, Steve breaks up with her when things get really bad cause like I said he is not doing great and feels like he cannot be what she deserves while he's like fighting for his life, but they get back together when Steve feels ready again. Evie 100% waits for him and also when they get back together it probably becomes Steviepop.

I don’t think Steve is probably the BEST at raising a kid, especially when he’s 18, but I think he is a lot better than he thinks. He loves his sister more than life itself and even though he has a hard time showing it, she knows. As the baby grows up Steve is very big on telling her about what happened when she was a baby. She knows Steve isn’t her dad, and Steve doesn’t rly like being thought of that way either. But she still adores him and knows that he’s fighting to make sure she can do whatever she wants with her life. She also gives him the father daughter dance at her wedding and Steve won’t admit it but he cries.

Just rewatched the pilot episode of The Outsiders tv series for the first time since middle school and here’s my thoughts (featuring conversations with my boyfriend while we watched as someone who is a new fan) Spoilers for this 34 year old show

- They start this shit with the clip of Dally getting shot down from the movie then play an opening with all different actors 😭

- I forgot I memorized Ponyboy’s monologue at the beginning and used to write it down in a notebook at recess bc I had no friends

- I fondly recall having a welfare check eerily similar to the one in the ep and it filled me with both nostalgia and dread

- Soda’s living his best life in this ep he made out with a girl in the back of the car then just ate cake outta a bowl on the front porch

Excerpt from chapter 1:

"Darry! Time to get up!" His mom called. "You're going to be late for school!"

Like any other teenage boy, Darry just groaned and rolled over. He shoved his head underneath his pillow and snuggled down under the blankets. “Five more minutes, mama.” In his state between sleep and wakefulness, Darry thought he heard his mom laugh.

It was only when his alarm started beeping that Darry was jerked from the fantasy. The fantasy where his parents were alive. Darry rolled onto his back, slapping the alarm to silence it. He stared up at the ceiling for a long few seconds.

His mother was dead, his father too. He hadn't been in school for years now. He wasn’t a teenager. Like the last remnants of a dream, the fantasy faded away to the cold reality he was forced to live in.

Darry dragged himself to his feet. His back and feet were still aching from work the day before. His arms were sore, hands chapped and callused. Darry groaned.

His bedroom was cold, he hadn't found time to fix the window in order to make it close properly. So he got dressed as quickly as possible, shoving his feet into thick socks. But knowing that he’d be sweating at work, he didn’t bother putting on an undershirt.

"Ponyboy!" Darry pounded on the wall between their rooms, yanking pants on. "Wake up!"

He heard his little brother groan, "Quit hollerin’, I'm up." With that confirmation, Darry ducked into the bathroom to get ready for the day.

Nine months ago, their parents were killed when a train hit their car. Darry was awarded temporary custody of his little brother. Since then, he'd been working his ass off day and night. He needed to prove to the state that he was a capable guardian and to do that, he needed money. He was lucky in some ways. The foreman Darry's father worked under allowed Darry to take his place on the crew. Their dad never made great money, but it was something.

Darry learned how to stretch their budget as thin as possible. One meager salary wasn’t enough for all their expenses, so he’d been picking shifts up at the Dingo a few times a week. And though he didn’t approve of it, he turned the other cheek when stolen food appeared in the pantry and fridge. It was more important that Ponyboy ate.

When he padded out of the bathroom, Darry could hear Ponyboy crashing around his bedroom as he got ready for school. They'd had another argument the night before, leading to Ponyboy throwing his textbooks around his room in anger.

The big brother part of Darry couldn't help but feel satisfaction that Pony was forced to deal with the consequences of that action. The guardian part of him knew that their mornings were scheduled to the minute and Ponyboy would likely be running late.

Like always, Darry made it into the kitchen before Ponyboy. He stuck two pieces of toast in the toaster and went about packing his lunch for work. Due to their fight last night, Ponyboy hadn't packed himself a lunch yet. Darry slipped a few coins from his pocket and put them into Pony's backpack.

"Pony! Breakfast!" Darry shouted as the bread popped up. He slathered one piece with peanut butter and the other with mayonnaise.

His little brother came out from his bedroom quickly, backpack swinging behind him. Though his clothes were rumpled and probably unwashed, he'd taken the time to grease his hair back. Darry didn’t have the energy to chastise him, one day of looking sloppy wouldn’t hurt anyone.

Ponyboy snagged the piece of toast with mayo and shoved it into his mouth.

"You need a ride?" Darry asked. It was his attempt at an olive branch, but it soared over Ponyboy’s head.

Pony shook his head, "Two-Bit's driving me and Johnny. He's gonna take us to the movies after school."

Darry lifted an eyebrow, "Was that a question or a statement?"

Pony's lips pressed into a flat line, "Statement. You can't stop me from goin'."

Au where, Foster Ponyboy, Mrs Curtis and Mr Curtis are still alive, Soda and Darry’s bio Parents, Darry is freashy 18, Soda is 14, they got Custody of Johnny Cade, and are trying to figure out things with the adoption agency, which also in this case happened to be the foster care center, Pony comes in sitting down (he’s like 11-12) and he was kinda shy and bro was short and scrawny and had been through the screwed up foster care system way to many times (not hard though, like a lost puppy, like Johnny expect, not Johnny.) his eyes met with Mrs Curtis and they kinda stayed there, her decribtion of them to him was “the most darling eyes I’ve ever seen” and he kinda just sat next to her, the whole time, holding her hand, like not forcefully gently. Like how a mother holds a babies hand. Mr Curtis also took a liking to him bc he kinda just stared at him, eyes tricking and holding onto Mrs Curtis and smiling at Soda’s Shagins, Hiding at Darry case (bros spooky even if he was just trying to be friendly.)

He went home as a Curtis that night. (And Johnny got adopted to and the Curtis parents didn’t die!!!)

this is really cute!! i love the headcanons that johnny was practically a curtis pre curtis parent deaths, one of my main hcs is that sodapop was the kind of kid who was literally just like “yeah you’re my friend now whether you like it or not” and johnny just rolled with it but when mrs curtis saw how thin and scared he looked her mama bear instincts kicked in and she was just not having any of it. i love aus where johnny gets adopted by them too, so cute :(

My favorite aus are ones where the curtis parents live but then again the book wouldn’t have happened if they did. this is really cute!!

English teacher Ponyboy. He would be absolutely OBSESSED with the books he assigns, and he'd love teaching poetry (and reading everyone's essays!!) also ik his lessons would be fun asf

Soda isn't academic, but I feel like he'd love being an equine vet! That way he could be around horses all day (and save them too!) realistically tho I think after he worked at the DX he got a job at the old farm he used to work at training horses instead (bc I want him to be happy <3)

(Modern) I can see Dally working retail or in fast food tbh (only places he can work based off his track record tbh). "Welcome to Taco Bell man 😡"

I can see Steve in the military. Maybe he joined the air force or smth to avoid the draft?? But imagine him. Working on planes in a giant hangar or working in air traffic control

I think Darry would be a good social worker or smth in youth services. Someone on here had a hc that he started fostering kids and that's so. in character. Idk if he'd ever have his own family but he really loves helping others.

Johnny would also go into social work to help kids who grew up the way he did (If he survived ☹️).

Two-bit would sell cars when he got older and manage a dealership (and he'd be such a good salesman). Or maybe he could cut hair. Barber Two-bit would be interesting (and he's a good conversationalist so no one would EVER be bored while he did their hair).

Part 1 of the Ponyboy Foster Kid Au

Ponyboy thinks Darrel and Sodapop are interesting. They’re brothers, which is weird, because the older boy is a foster parent now. His first impression was, ‘Jesus Christ how young’d you knock up a girl.’ Then he quickly thought, ‘No. That doesn’t make sense. Must be gay together.” He was quickly shot down once his social worker explained that they were brothers, and Darrel would be his foster parent. He quickly took back his gay comment, even though it was just in his head.

The pair of boys seemed just fine, if anything, it felt awkward around them. They were such perfect brothers, they got along perfectly, never fought, and loved each other. He was almost envious of them.

Sodapop never seemed to go to school, he soon found out that he’s a dropout and works at their local gas station. After he learned about that he wondered how Darrel was possibly okay with him doing that, and what their parents would think?

Darrel seemed like an okay guy, he obviously wasn’t very happy about being stuck with Ponyboy, but he was still nice. He got Ponyboy some school supplies and a new backpack, so, that automatically put him up there with some of his best foster parent experiences. He at least didn’t act like he was not welcome, he surely was, it was just clear the guy had priorities.

Soda immediately tried to cling to him, and Pony had to admit that it was nice to see someone so excited to see him. Darrel always had a smile on his face when looking at the two being so happy, so he always assumed it was because his brother was getting along with him.

Ponyboy never would have thought that Darrel was smiling like that because he’d never seen their family so happy again. He’d never seen Soda with such a smile on his face since their parents died. He’d never seen a boy who’d completed their family so much.

Darry Curtis Thoughts

I am of two minds of what happens to Darry Curtis after the book.

The first is that once Pony and Soda are proper grown, Soda happy at the DX and Ponyboy away at college, Darry finally manages to save up and go to college himself. He finds a partner and a job he likes and does the whole picket fence lifestyle.

The second is that one Ponyboy starts college Darry finds the house suddenly very quiet. Over the past few years he's grown pretty good at raising half deliquent teenagers. More than that, he's come to like it. He's been promoted to foreman at his job, and finds he doesn't hate it as much as he hated the position as a labourer. he could go to college...but he's not sure thats his dream anymore. So he gets a foster license, and the day the last of the paperwork is signed he gets a call, and that night he's got two greasy, suspicious fifteen year olds dropped on his doorstep with hollow cheeks and distrustful eyes. At twenty seven, he starting to realise how young fifteen really is. So he takes them in, and they're not good kids not by a long shot. He'd thought a moody Ponyboy was trouble, but before the end of the first week with his new foster kids he's calling his brother and aapologizing, because he's realizing now that pony was a really, really good teenager. Even still, he's Darry Curtis, and he's never met a challenge he didn't face head on. So he takes these kids- kids who look like Dally WInston, and Johnny Cade, and Steve Randle, and every other east side kid Tulsa chewed up and spit out- and he parents them, and he loves them unconditionally, because that's all he knows, is love that's unconditional. And by the time these kids hit seventeen, they've mellowed a bit, and they care about him too, so when he gets a phone call from the state asking if he'd be willing to be an emergency placement for a kid whose been booted from three different foster placements, Darry Curtis says yes.

And it's not the life he expected, and Darry Curtis never marries but he has more kids than anyone on the east side, and hell, in the end most of them turn out ok. He's a miracle worker that Darry Curtis, takes desperation and turns it into hope.

Prompt that created the world- age accuracy pb&j idea ponyboy and Johnny set in modern times, but they’d be as if they aged up and created their own family.

The au begins with a 46-year-old Ponyboy Curtis and a new student in his English class named Tex Romero. Pony is a teacher at a local middle school, he comes across a kid who bares a striking resemblance against one of his closest friends, Dallas Winston. Tex asks why he, and Johnny never got married or dated anybody and starts explaining a queer platonic relationship. The pair have a lightbulb moment when Tex is done explaining to them. Tex started the conversation by asking about Darry and two-bit trying to learn more about this new adoptive family he's found himself in because he talked to a teacher about when he was found by child protective services running around without any kind of parents, so he was sent to foster care and being forced to go to school. Tex mentions that Darry and Two-bit act like Johnny and Pony do with each other. When asked to explain what he meant by the two pairs acting alike he mentions that both pairs act like a married couple despite neither of them ever marrying or having kids. Pony is forced to explain Darry hasn't dated in decades because he stopped being friends with a guy he knew when he was young. Darry is sent to talk to Tex and he tells him about the situationship the old man in his youth, Tex mentions the possibility that Darry was in love with Paul holden and they had a breakup he never got over and that was why he never married or dated even after his schedule cleared up immensely when his youngest brother left home to go to school. Tex talking about relationships had unopened a can of worms nobody was sure were going to close until everything was discussed and talked about. He’d opened hidden lore about his new family, and he was always a curious sort, so he was determined to find the truth to everything and convince his dads to get together officially and his newfound uncles to admit their own feelings towards each other.

inflicting paul with an older sister (who i have named penelope) to further my peril angst potential in my foster ponyboy au

- so i absolutely see penelope and paul as age gap siblings, so paul was born when penny was 16 and a junior in high school

(a bunch more under the cut ;)

- penelope was 100% the golden child for her whole life. the whole nine yards, she did track, swimming, and cheerleading, she was valedictorian, truly every parent’s dream child

- she had such a good relationship with her parents, too, man they ADORED her, mr. holden was always bragging on the golf course about his brilliant baby girl was gonna go to stanford or columbia (bc she had the grades to get in anywhere and tbh they could afford to send her anywhere she wanted to go) and mrs. holden was constantly taking her on little girls dates and just spoiling the hell out of her

- not gonna lie, her parents having paul her junior year kinda messed with her.. she was well on her way to a full ride to whatever college she wanted with her grades and her athletics but she really took it hard when paul was born and she lost her relationship with both of her parents

- all this is NOT to say that she didn’t like paul bc man she loved this baby boy SO MUCH and she was seriously the best big sister… but paul doesn’t remember that, just growing up in her shadow but never even really knowing her *tear*

- with nobody really pushing her to go to college on a scholarship or pressuring her into going to law school, she kinda figured out that she really.. hated the idea?

- she eventually decided to start saving up her allowance (which let’s be honest, it’s probably way too much) and after she graduated, she took her car and headed west until she hit the ocean and just,, never came back

- she def kept in contact with the family, only really came back to visit for christmas and maybe once in the summer if california was realllly hot (tulsa wasn’t much better but at least it rained god damn) but other than that she doesn’t really ever see them

- paul does NOT like to admit it,, but he misses her :( obviously his parents are very supportive of him in football and whatever else, but he wishes she wanted to see him more, especially because their mom talks ALL THE TIME about how great of a big sister was when he was little before she left

- penny and paul have a lot of unresolved resentment towards each other (penny bc when paul was born he ruined her relationship with her parents and paul bc he’s been compared to her for his whole life) which SUCKS bc they really kinda need each other bc they’re not really mad at each other their parents just didn’t know how to have two kids

- so naturally, when ponyboy comes into the picture and paul is already trying to navigate *this* dynamic change and how he feels about it (*cough* darry *cough*) of fucking course that’s when penelope decides to come back home for a couple of months

- she bonds with ponyboy pretty much right away, even though she’s like almost 30 and pony is still 13, they just get each other. don’t ask him about it bc he might punch a wall but paul is SO jealous of it

- not that hippies are a thing in tulsa but my god she’s well on her way lol which i think blends realllllly well with pony’s sunset-poetry-head-in-the-clouds vibe

- on the hippie note: she absolutely gives pony a blunt at some point thinking he’s older than 13 and he tells her EVERYTHING, literally nothing is off the table; his parents, his brothers, HIS BROTHER AND HER BROTHER

- so yea that’s how penny found out about paul and darry lol

- and like the big sister that she is, she obviously is gonna invite darry and soda over for dinner one night just to watch the two of them go insane (and also pony gets to see his brothers so, win-win)

I'm intrigued on the foster au

how does the rest of the gang become the gang since the curtis brothers didn't grow up with them

or how did the rest of the gang adopt the curtis brothers

also also how does steve find out soda's real identity

I think the rest of the gang kind of becomes friends over time and they’re all close by the time the Curtises show up. But each of them get separately kind of adopted.

Two-Bit meets Darry at the dingo and starts bugging him a lot. Like chatting his ear off just constantly until Darry is forced to talk back. Surprise, the two actually get along really well and become immediate besties.

Soda meets Steve when he gets the job at the DX. Soda’s quieter (at first) in this AU, and a bit worse socially because his foster parents had made it really hard for him to talk to people. Steve honestly at first is just giving Soda the time of day because he’s really intrigued by him. Then over time Soda trusts him more and gets more talkative and they become best friends.

Ponyboy meets Johnny at school. They’re sat next to eachother and work well together cause they’re both quiet, shy kids. That one happens more gradually, they just spend more and more time together until they’re basically inseparable.

AS FOR STEVE LEARNING WHO SODA IS

So Steve is the first person Soda has ever trusted with his entire heart and soul. It’s hard to trust Ponyboy because he knows the only reason Ponyboy doesn’t resent him like he does Darry is because he doesn’t know he’s Sodapop. He knows he should trust Darry, but Darry being something of an authority figure in his life and also being big enough to kill him without batting an eye makes it hard for him to completely let his guard down. Plus Darry controls if he has a roof over his head that night, and while Darry promised not to kick him out he’s had a lot of people promise him things and then break those promises. So his like safe person is Steve.

Soda tells Steve completely voluntarily. One day he walks into the DX and he’s had a really rough morning. Darry and Ponyboy were arguing which scares him a lot more in this than it does in canon, and Ponyboy basically told Darry he hated him for getting a good life and leaving Ponyboy to rot. And Darry tries to bring up Sodapop but Ponyboy is like ‘he’s not here. He can burn in hell for all I care. I hope he does.’

So Soda is venting to Steve about all this and Steve is ofc like ‘okay but why do you care if he hates Sodapop?’. And then EVERYTHING comes spilling out. So Steve is sat there like ‘what the fuck’. Soda spends the next like week paranoid out of his mind that Steve is going to tell everybody. But Steve never does, in his mind it’s not his secret to tell and he doesn’t want to break Soda’s very fragile trust in him.

the rest of the gang is kind of pissed at Steve for not telling them, but Steve says that he wasn’t going to betray Soda when he’s the only person he’s ever trusted.
