Etiquette of the Edwardian Era and La Belle Époque: How to Dress

This is a new set of posts focusing on the period of time stretching from the late 19th century to the early 20th Century right up to the start of WWI.

I'll be going through different aspects of life. This series can be linked to my Great House series as well as my Season post and Debutant post.

Today will be focusing on the rules of clothes with this time period.

A Cut for Every Occasion

As you may know, the wealthy elite and their servants lived extremely regimented lives and every aspect was governed by careful rules. They would be expected to wear the right outfit at the right time, every minute of the day. Any misstep would be noticed at once and be subject to scruntiny.

In the circles of the elite, one would be expected to change for every occasion. One simply wouldn't wear the same outfit they've been lying around the house in to attend tea at somebody's house. Fashion in this era was dictated by the clock and by the event diary of the wearer.

Ladies

Women of the upperclass would be expected to change at least six times a day. When she would rise for a morning of repose around the house, she would simply wear a house gown or a simple blouse and skirt. If planning a morning stroll, she would change into a walking suit which is a combination of blouse, skirt and jacket along with her hat usually of tweed. If running errands or paying a visit to friends, she would wear another walking suit. If riding, she would wear a riding habit and a hat. If hosting tea or taking tea in her own home, she would change into a tea gown with is a lighter more airier gown more comfortable for chilling in. If attending a garden party, one wears a pastel or white formal day gown accompanied by a straw hat and gloves. For dinner, she would change into an evening gown which would be more elaborate and show off a little more skin than her day wear. After dinner and ready for bed, she would change into her nightgown.

Female servants had an easier time of it. A housekeeper and lady's maid would simply wear a solid black gown for the entire day. A cook and kitchen maids would wear a simple day dress for working with an apron. Housemaids would usually wear a print dress with an apron and cap, changing into the more formal black and white attire you would associate with a maid.

Gentlemen

The gentlemen had an easier time but they too were subject to changes throughout the day. Men were expected to wear a suit. The most popular day time suit was a sack suit. These were comprised of plain and loose fitting jackets, worn over a starched shirt with a high collar, waistcoat and straight trousers with ironed creases. These suits were exclusively wool with cheaper ones made of a wool and cotton blend. Grey, green, brown, navy were usual but sine younger men preferred louder colours such as purple which was a trend for a time in the 1910s. These suits were worn about the house or in the city accompanied by a coat. Men would change into tweed if shooting or walking. For garden parties, a gentleman would wear a light coloured suit, usually white and a straw hat. For dinner, a man had two choices: his tails or his dinner jacket. A dinner jacket was for less formal suppers say if dining at home. This was a collection of a jacket, trousers, waistcoat, a bow tie, a detachable wing-collar shirt and black shoes. Lapels of these jackets were edged with silk or satin. Tails were worn at a formal dinner party, at White Tie events. This was made up of a tailcoat, white piqué waistcoat, a starched dress shirt with a pique bib and standing wing collar with a white bow tie. Trousers were lined with trim to hide the seams.

Male servants were soared changing. Footmen would wear their livery around the clock which would resemble white tie to a certain extent or mimic court dress of palace servants. Butler's would wear a variation of a gentleman's evening suit throughout the day. When a male servant is dressed, he usually stays that way. However, a valet or a footman may be taken to pick up during shooting parties where they would wear tweed walking suits.

Jewellery

Jewellery was an important sign of status in society. Upperclass women of this time has access to untold caches of sparklers but there were rules concerning their use and meaning. Earrings were usually clip ons as women of high status would not pierce their ears. Simple, understated earrings were worn during the day with more ostentatious sets were worn in the evening time. Broaches were popular at this time, usually worn at the throat of a gown or blouse or walking suit or affixed on hats. Large stoned rings were worn over gloves while slender bands were worn under. Jewellery was intricate and understated amongst old money whole the nouveau riche went for chunkier stones and larger settings. Tiaras were only worn at White Tie events, held after six pm and almost never by unmarried girls. One would not wear a larger tiara than that most senior lady present. Men would wear tie pins, cufflinks and pocket watches to match any occasion be it for a jaunt on the town or at a formal evening party.

Hats

Hats were a staple in this period. Anybody respectable from any class wouldn't venture out of the door without a hat.

Men would wear hats when heading out but always remove them when entering a building, and never wear one without removing it for the presence of a lady. The bowler was seen as more a servant's headwear while a top hat was reserved for gentlemen. Flat caps would be only seen on gentlemen at shooting gatherings or in the country, they were popular among the common class for any informal occasion.

Women had more stricter rules concern hats. Hats for women were more a day accessory worn while out and about. A woman would not wear a hat in her own home even when entertaining and nor would any of the other female occupants if joining the gathering. A woman would not remove her hat when attending a luncheon or tea or any activity. Hats were held in place by a ribbon or sash tied under the chin or by a hat pin, which is essentially a large needle thrust through the hair. This was the period where women's hats became more ornate and rather large, leading to some critisism. Among servants, housekeepers and lady's maids would not wear a hat while indoors and working but a housemaid or cook or kitchen maid would cover their hair with a cap with housemaids changing into a more elaborate one come evening time. Male servants would not wear hats unless travelling or outdoors.

Gloves

Gloves are a staple in this period and worn only at the opportune time. Among servants, only footmen would wear gloves and usually only when serving. Butlers would never wear gloves. Female servants did not wear gloves.

Men did wear gloves, usually woollen or leather while outside or riding gloves when out on horseback.

Women wore gloves whenever outside. Day gloves were usually wrist length, with evening gloves stretching to the elbow. During dinner, evening gloves would be removed at the first course and laid across the lap, replaced at the last course when the ladies leave for tea and coffee after where the gloves are then removed again. Gloves are always worn when dancing and at the theatre or opera. If one is sitting in ones box and sampling some chocolate, one can remove their gloves for that.

Hair and Makeup

Make up was a no-no amongst the upper crust and for their servants in England and America, as it was seen as licentious but in France, the use of rouge was accepted. Perfume and cologne were acceptable but excessive use was frowned upon.

Hair was dressed by one's lady's maid. Bouffant updos were popular in this time period for married women. During the last years of this period, women began adopting the 'bob' but this was seen as radical and sometimes scandalous. Unmarried girls could wear their hair down, often with accessories like a bow to adorn their tresses. Servants would always tie up their hair and never be seen with it down or uncovered (though this depended on their job).

Men would comb their hair, slicking it back for dinner. Most men were clean shaven but if they wore beards, they were usually well groomed. Hair was kept short for grown men and teenagers but young boys may wear their hair longer whilst in the nursery.

Today, Y/N has finally started life with a clean slate.. Finally she moved to a new city! There were just some strange moments... Firstly.. Housing prices are too pleasant... Secondly, salaries are higher here than in her city.. And what is even more strange.... There are too many jobs and vacant houses here... Maybe it 's just not such a busy city , and that 's a good thing! Then no one will make noise under the windows at night! Although there will be no noise under the windows, much worse things will happen..

Y/N has already managed to find a job! She got a job in an office, which fortunately was next to her house! And that's a little weird... Next to the house where her apartment was.. Strange people often hung around.. Namely, unusually tall and muscular women and men..covered in scars and tattoos... Perhaps it's just avid bikers ..? Really .. Yes ..? After all, when selling her apartment, the realtor did not tell her that this is a criminal area...!!! It's possible that she's just winding herself up and it's just bikers... But for some reason, their clothes don't look very much like biker ones... Tank tops without sleeves...polo shirts... Turtlenecks... Sweatpants or classic trousers, formal suits with ties.... And not a single hint of leather jackets or other biker stuff... Which is strange... Okay, maybe Y/N just developed a little paranoia......

It was late in the evening...Y/N was returning home from work... It was already about 7-8 o'clock in the evening... Suddenly ! She heard screams of pain, agony, and sobs from the alley... Foolishly, Y/N came unsteadily, looked into the alley and was horrified.... THERE WAS A GUY BLEEDING ON THE GROUND!!! His left hand was already missing fingers and half of the skin... And it is clear that the wound has already slightly festered due to the dirt.. There were already many burns on his right hand , and 3 fingers were broken .. HIS FACE DIDN 'T EVEN FUCKING RESEMBLE A FACE , BUT MINCED MEAT !!! And all this was done to him , and the strange girl continued to do it ..next to her , on the asphalt lay bloody pliers, a hammer, a dagger and various other scary sharp things covered in blood.. She was wearing a black turtleneck, and black classic trousers with lace-up boots.. She had long, grey hair slightly disheveled to the waist, and pale skin... Y/N couldn't see her face because this girl had her back to her.. And she kept torturing the poor guy.. But after a couple of seconds, SHE TURNED AROUND AND STARED AT Y/N WITH A SADISTIC GRIN!! She has narrow brown eyes, Asian facial features and quite a few scars on her face..

- CLEARLY A FUCKING DANGEROUS GIRL: ohh~ what kind of cute lamb wandered in here ~ you look like you're going to faint~ ah, aren't you having fun? ~ I'm just punishing this pathetic insect who betrayed the boss and gave out important information to another gang~

Y/N backed away, and met something solid with her back. She thought it was a wall... But this creepy and dangerous girl stared at this "wall" that was behind Y/N, and stuttered slightly..

- CLEARLY A FUCKING DANGEROUS GIRL: O-oh... B-Boss.... Haha.. B-But I'm c-conducting an interrogation.. Oh, I w-was about to t-take that g-girl down.. B-Boss don't w-worry-

This OBVIOUSLY dangerous girl broke off at the end of her word because this supposedly wall, which turned out to be a woman, jerked from behind Y/N AND PUNCHED HER RIGHT IN THE FACE OF THIS GIRL , and began shouting obviously furious words ... Uhhh... What language is this...? Italian seems to be...

-A strange savior: MIKI MORI HAI GIÀ SUPERATO IL LIMITE !!! QUESTA DOLCE RAGAZZA È UNA CITTADINA ORDINARIA CHE È APPENA PASSATA E DEVI TROVARE UN POSTO MIGLIORE PER INTERROGARE, VEDI QUANTO È SPAVENTATO QUESTO AGNELLO, HAH?!!?! HAH?!!??

While her strange savior was yelling at this dangerous girl.. And her savior was ALSO CLEARLY MORE DANGEROUS THAN THIS GIRL MANY TIMES OVER !! Y/N was able to see it... Her approximate height was 6'5 feet, she had Italian facial features (which is clear from the language she is shouting in now)... She has a rather unusual hairstyle... Short, like a man's.. And the coloring of her hair is a little strange.. Each of her strands alternates between white and yellow ... She has tanned skin.. Blue eyes... Broad shoulders and A LOT OF SCARS ON HER ARMS!! a small piercing on the lower lip and on the left eyebrow... There is a scar on the left side of her jaw.. And there's a longish scar on her right eye, like an animal wound.. And the scariest and strangest thing about her.. SHE'S GOT FUCKING TEETH ALMOST LIKE A SHARK'S!!! THE TIPS OF HER TEETH ARE SHARPENED , FUCK!!! It's scary.. But at the same time it suits her strangely..She is wearing a grey polo shirt, black trousers, a black leather belt with an iron plaque, and classic black leather shoes..AND ABRUPTLY !! Someone gently grabbed her armpits and carried her out of the alley like a cat...

It was.. More simply, but also a menacing-looking girl..She has dark brown hair..It's also a man's haircut, but a longer one.. German and soft facial features.. Blue eyes.. Prominent cheekbones..FUCK !! SHE HAS A SCAR STRETCHING FROM THE LEFT CORNER OF HER MOUTH AND PROTRUDING FANGS LIKE AN ANIMAL!!! Piercing of the left eyebrow and piercing in the ears.. A scar on her neck.. AND THERE ARE A LOT OF FUCKING SCARS ON HER HANDS TOO!! She is wearing a white sleeveless T-shirt, black sweatpants with a white stripe on their right side, a black bandana on her head , and simple black and white sneakers

Androgynous/Masc Leaning Capsule Wardrobe Ideas

In honor of International Nonbinary People’s Day, I offer you the clothing advice I wish I had like 15 years ago. I prefer a small well curated wardrobe but it is so tough to pull that off as a nonbinary genderfluid person. I spent years struggling to make my capsule wardrobe work for me. Every example I saw was either with feminine clothes or with the world blandest men’s clothing. 

For reference, I’m AFAB and live in Kentucky - very hot and muggy in summers, can get quite cold (-20 F) in winter but it’s usually mild with highs are in the 30F-40F range most days. This is the advice I’d give my younger self if I could. 

Focus on 10-15 Core Items

While I am fluid, I consistently spend most of my time “inbetween” these days. Having a neutral to masc learning main wardrobe with some feminine items to mix in wound up working best for me. So here’s the masc leaning base wardrobe I recommend. 

~3 x Button Ups - I went with short sleeve Hawaiian shirts for myself because I love bold patterns. You can find a lot of Hawaiian shirt these days that don’t have stereotypical “island” patterns on them while still being pretty light and breathable in summer. If your style leans more classic, consider oxford cloth button ups. You might need more button ups if you work in a business casual setting. 

~3 x Tees - I like graphic tees, specifically hand screen printed ones so that’s what I go with. But if your style is more classic then consider investing in some good quality solid color tees. 

~3 x Casual Tops - for me this is a tank top, turtleneck, and a Henley. But you might consider a collarless button ups, plain long sleeve shirts, and ringer style long sleeve shirts. 

~3 Pants - for me, I have black and stone washed denim since those are my favorites. I look for tapered fits over skinny or boot leg where I can. I have one pair that’s a jogger style I quite like. You might look for chinos or khakis if you have a more formal dress code at work but they’ll still work with graphic tees and other tops if you style them right. 

~3 x Layers - for me this is a cardigan, a flannel, and a hoodie. You might consider v neck or crew neck sweaters, cable knit sweaters, and fair isle sweaters as well. 

Feminine Clothing Module

What’s nice about this approach is that you can then create a feminine clothing module that plays nicely with your main wardrobe. 

For me this looks like

1-2 Dresses - I have a maxi tee dress and a long sleeved linen dress since that works more for everyday wear for me. 

1-2 Skirts - I don’t have any presently but the next big feminine swing I have I’ll be ordering a nice linen skirt in my favorite color. 

1-2 Casual Tops - I don’t have any presently after my last big wardrobe edit but business casual shell tops, camisoles, and cowl neck tops work well here. 

1-2 Layers - I have a linen blazer in a women’s cut and a long striped duster. You might consider a kimono style shrug/wraps, sweaters in a more feminine cut, and women’s cardigans

You don’t need a lot here because so much of the main wardrobe can be mixed with a feminine element or two and it becomes much more feminine - especially if you’re AFAB but even if you’re AMAB. It doesn’t take a lot a feminine clothing to make an over all outfit look more feminine and subtle touches work just as well as more overt styles ime.

Sizing

Sizing is tricky as hell. I’m plus size (size 18-20 in women’s pants) and especially trying to find masculine stuff with the right fit is a pain. I really recommend going in to try things on if you’re able but if not get comfortable with the idea you will likely need to send things back. Yes you can take measurements but those measurements are still listed with different proportions in mind. 

For men’s clothes I lean toward a slightly oversized fit - as most men I’m around do. For women’s clothes, I lean toward a slightly tight fit - as most women I’m around do. Look at the people around you and see which fits they lean toward and opt for that where you’re able to for yourself. 

Shoes, Outwear, Special Occasions

Shoes - I tend to opt to go neutral in my shoes and outerwear. Not in color or pattern mind you but gender. For shoes, I currently have 3 pairs - a pair of crocs (with spikes), running shoes/sneakers (old Champion brand slip ons), and a pair of Doc Martens. These are good options if you’re AMAB too because the sizing is unisex or available in similar styles for men and women. Other good options are Vans, Chucks, any hippie sandal brand you can think of. “Nicer” shoes are great but often pretty gendered. I lean toward getting “nicer shoes” that are opposite my assigned gender when I do grab them. 

Outerwear - I also tend to opt for gender neutral options for outerwear too. Since it doesn’t get terribly cold here, I stick to a micropuff jacket from North Face and layer a black denim jacket over it when it gets cold. When I wear it with masc stuff, blends in. When I wear it with feminine stuff, it adds a slight edge I like. Pea coats are decent options as well. If you live some place real cold, a lot of the long winter coats are basically the same between genders, just different fits. 

Special Occasions - I would recommend not worrying about special occasions until or unless they come up. I have the same two “special occasion” dresses that I’ve been using for years because they come up so rarely and I can’t bare to spend too much money on something I’ll wear maybe once or twice a year. Formal wear is highly gendered and if you learn androgynous it’s a tough needle to thread. For those events with hosts you know, it’s worth reaching out to them to see what they think makes an outfit “formal” - could be nicer cuts or materials, could be rigid gender norms - can’t know until you ask. 

For most special occasions, I do not know the host, so I default very structured looks in accordance with my assigned gender. Still feels a bit edgy but no ones gonna have the guts to say it’s wrong. For AMAB folks you might do the inverse, more flowy looks and colors while still adhering to your assigned gender. All depends on the level of familiarity you have with the hosts and the flack you’re willing to catch. 

Outfits
