My thoughts on Fecto Elfilis

Fecto Elfilis is a character I've hardly ever talked about before this point, but now I'd like to talk about it.

First of all, I like Elfilis. I think they work great as a stand-out "fuck you" villain compared to most of the other villains in Kirby. I like how utterly unhinged and depraved they were to go as far as to attempt colliding Popstar with the New World during their boss battle. They're just a totally spiteful asshole and I think that's amazing.

But I'll be honest, I don't feel sorry for Elfilis. I find it really hard to sympathize with them.

Many people in the Kirby fandom have woobified Elfilis. I'm not one to police how other people portray Kirby characters as I think it's a very open franchise and that anyone is entitled to portray the characters how they want, so that's cool if you choose to woobify Elfilis. But I personally don't care to do it.

To be fair, I can understand why some people feel sorry for Elfilis. Mainly because of how they got experimented on by a group of humans/scientist/ancients or whatever. Which, I mean, yeah... that was cruel. It was fucked up for those guys to do that.

But the thing is, it was Elfilis' own fault for invading the New World in the first place. They did that to themself. They were basically asking for it. I can't exactly blame those guys for holding it captive, as unnecessarily cruel and brutal as it was for them to do it the way they did it. But Elfilis basically got themself in that situation by being the one to start the hostility. They could've theoretically avoided being experimented on if they, uh, didn't start attacking the New World.

And the reason why Elfilis got angry and violent as Kirby confronted them wasn't because they were being experimented on. It's because they were just an incredibly hateful bastard that wants to destroy, destroy, destroy. They were going to do all those terrible things regardless whether or not the humans experimented on it. Getting experimented on just merely delayed it.

I'd actually go as far as to say that Fecto Elfilis is the least sympathetic of all the Kumazaki-era Kirby villains.

I don't really woobify Magolor all that much because I consider his suffering in Another Dimension to be his own fault, but at least he does show himself to be sad so I can sympathize with him to an extent. Taranza and Sectonia have a tragic story, as do Susie and Haltmann. I can also sympathize with the Mage Sisters and Hyness since they have a lot of similarities to the 3DS Kirby villains. The Beast Pack are also sympathetic, since they're not bad guys on their own and you only fought them because of Fecto Forgo.

But Fecto Elfilis doesn't really have anything that makes me sympathize with them. I'm talking about the entire thing combined. Fecto Forgo on its own I could feel sorry for, because it's just kind of some violent thing that doesn't know better, and Elfilin is of course a good little guy. However, Fecto Elfilis, the thing that those two combined together, I don't really feel sorry for the thing.

Sectonia, Haltmann and Hyness didn't start out as evil and were turned evil by outside forces. That doesn't excuse their actions, as they're still very much culpable for what they did, but I can still sympathize with them for a number of factors. At least, in my opinion, they're a lot easier to sympathize with than Elfilis.

Unlike those three, Elfilis was already evil from the start. They were already a malevolent asshole from the get-go. They didn't need to be turned evil by some outside force, because they already were beforehand. This villain literally has an evil backstory of invading planets. I don't think anything deserves to be experimented on like Elfilis did, but that doesn't change the fact that this character has still always been a vicious beast, and that being experimented on was still ultimately their own fault for being the one to start the conflict.

And I don't really care to make a redemption arc for Fecto Elfilis either. If you ask me, I'd say that this character's "redemption" is basically just Elfilin. The little guy is now free from being a part of Elfilis. I personally imagine that Fecto Elfilis is no more after absorbing into Elfilin, so he's now the full one and can stay that way. Fecto Forgo and Fecto Elfilis are dead in my headcanons.

If you decide to redeem Elfilis, that's cool. I just don't feel like doing it myself. I respect other people for how they want to portray characters in the Kirby fandom, and so I do it the way I want in my verse too.

But anyways, that's basically it. Like I said earlier, while I don't consider Elfilis to be sympathetic, I do still like them for being a total "fuck you" type of villain. It's admittedly nice to have a villain that doesn't even have any sympathetic motives and is just a piece of shit seemingly for the sake of it.
