Forge of destiny has a lot of cool girl characters. Here is my interpretation of my two favorite characters Bai Meizhen and Gu Xiulan. It's fun to try and design a character based off of what is written in a book. It really makes me think.
#forge of destiny#destiny cycle#my art#book fanart#i just finished book three but these drawings are based on their book one selves mostly#Gu Xiulan is so funny to me.. like girl let's go shopping together and then she bursts into flames of rage#idk if i completely captured the vibe i felt with either one of them but it was a fun exercise#in particular i wasn't sure what kind of beauty the bai clan would focus on in their fashion and hairstyles u know?#me: meizhen should be prim and blunt autistic and terrifying.. courtly and poised while also unreal feeling. not sure if i captured that

Morally Questionable Anime Milfs Side A Round 1 Match 3
Propaganda:
Holo -
"Well to start Holo has 100% killed people. But she's such a loving mom! She wanted a child so bad so she wouldn't be alone forever. Her kid is named after her long gone friend Myuri. Through the series, she helps smuggle gold, scams multiple people, and severely injures quite a few more."
Zeqing -
"Zeqing is a yuki onna who mentors the protagonist, Ling Qi, and throws her into an impromptu life and death trial-by-blizzard to learn the 'true meaning of music.' It's fine though. She also has a daughter of her own, whom Ling Qi befriends."

How The Sausage Is Made:
An Explainer For New Readers
At first glance, Forge Of Destiny looks like a regular novella series on Amazon with a new installment every 6-12 months, but underneath the surface is an audience-participation choose-your-own-adventure releasing 3 new chapters a week - if you wish, you can join the rest of the audience in voting on Ling Qi's actions.
The big picture is Destiny Cycle: the collective term for the books you are reading, including Forge Of Destiny, Threads Of Destiny, and any future installments. All three volumes of Forge and the first two volumes of Threads are available as of this writing. There's audiobook versions available as well.
Royal Road The books on Amazon are first published chapter-by-chapter on Royal Road, a website that hosts writing by independent authors. All chapters here are free to read, and no account is required. Royal Road's most recent chapter is always ahead of the bound volumes on Amazon, as it takes time for them to be collected and edited together into books by volunteers.
https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/21188/forge-of-destiny
Sufficient Velocity Each Royal Road chapter is itself first released on Sufficient Velocity, a web forum designed for roleplaying text adventure games - and this is because Destiny Cycle is actually played as a turn-based roleplaying text adventure, where the audience votes every few days on Ling Qi's major decisions. Ling Qi has stats, equipment, and even makes dice rolls to determine uncertain outcomes. If you are familliar with the term, Destiny Cycle is a quest thread.
Sufficient Velocity's most recent chapter is always ahead of Royal Road, as it takes time for each one to be proofread, edited, and brought up to RR's standards. If you want to read the story as it is being written, and help shape it, then this is the place to read along. All chapters here are free to read, but voting requires an account.
https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/threads-of-destiny-eastern-fantasy-sequel-to-forge-of-destiny.51431/
Omakes Fans can also submit writing or art (called "omake") that take place in Destiny Cycle to the Sufficient Velocity thread. If Yrs likes it, he'll add it to the "Apocrypha" list of worthy fanwork. If he really likes it, it'll be added to "Sidestories" instead and become part of the Destiny Cycle canon until further notice. Readers are awarded points for either of these two merits, which can be spent on improving the odds of Ling Qi's dicerolls.
The Discord This is the "official" centralised discussion space for all forms of Destiny Cycle, including spoiler-free channels for those keeping pace with Royal Road. Fans catching up to the most recent chapters are still encouraged to join - everyone loves to see the reactions of someone reading Destiny Cycle for the first time.
https://discord.com/invite/bc8bKZM
The Wiki This is the up-to-date repository of lore and character information for the series, such as character portraits, cultivation spreadsheets, and maps.
https://forgeofdestiny.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page
Commissions Yrsillar also does writing on a commission basis, with prices currently ranging from USD$55 to $80 depending on the piece. Most fans commission small Destiny Cycle stories that get added to the "Sidestories" collection on Sufficient Velocity. As of this writing, the queue is over a year long (he's very popular with fans) and listed on the discord.
Patreon Readers can support Yrsillar with monthly money via Patreon, gaining a special discord role and early access to both commissions and Royal Road chapters.

Lately, I've been reading Forge of Destiny, and while I think it's pretty good, I'm not going to talk about why today. Instead, I'm going to talk about something weird that I found interesting: The remnants of a text-to-text adaptation.
For those who don't know, the Forge of Destiny I linked is not the original version. The original was a "quest" on Sufficient Velocity. For those who don't know, quests are kind of like multiplayer choose-your-own-adventure stories; the author writes a chapter, the players vote on what happens next, the author writes another chapter.
You might not be able to tell if I hadn't told you that; Yrsillar has done a good job of adapting their story to a different format. Most significantly, the chapters have been broken up and merged, so that the chapters end at dramatically appropriate moments and not a decision-points.
But if you know what you're looking for, you can still see many of those decision-points. Perhaps the most obvious was in one of the early chapters, when Ling Qi (the protagonist) is looking for a seat and notes four fellow disciples with empty seats near them.
In the context of a normal novel, these characters would be one of three things: Important characters who our heroine will soon get to know, colorful set dressing, or a Chekhov's Gunman pretending to be set dressing. But they aren't, really. One of them is Qi's future roommate and friend, one of them leads a training group that Qi befriends but drifts away from, and the other two are too prominent to be set dressing but still incredibly unimportant characters. (One of them is technically a minor antagonist in a conflict that Qi doesn't seem to care about, the other is an even minor-er antagonist in that conflict.)
In a quest, though? That's the author pointing to a bunch of characters and asking who y'all want to hang out with. Which is why Qi hangs out with the guy who knows Qi's third- or fourth-best friend instead of the girl who ends up being her closest friend and ally. The players hung out with Han Jian at first, but later decided they'd rather focus on other characters. But without that context, the decision to focus on a tertiary character in chapter 2 makes little sense.
There are plenty of other instances of these visible decision points, usually times when Ling Qi clearly and explicitly contemplates two or three courses of action she could take. In an ordinary novel, a character thinking like that indicates that they're conflicted over which course of action to take (whether because they don't know what they want or because they don't know how to get it), but Qi does that kind of thing even when her actions or words in that scene are more consistent with making the decision quickly and sticking to it.
(There are also other marks; times when Qi said she'd think about something when the ambiguity wasn't needed, minor details that the players probably voted on got a bit more attention than authors would usually pay them, that kind of thing. I'm just trying to give an overview, not an exhaustive list.)
I'm not saying this as a criticism—like I said, I'm not sure people unfamiliar with the story's history would notice anything was off. It's like looking at an anime character running in place while talking and thinking "This probably looks better as a manga panel." Normally, that bit of adaptational jank isn't worth talking about.
But normally, it's not a text-to-text adaptation. Nothing about how Forge of Destiny was presented has changed, only its context. But even here, adaptation can leave scars. And I think that's interesting!

Fanfic: In Joy and Comfort
Xuan Shi did not expect the final room of the "trial" to be a secret hideaway for couples to get frisky, and he didn't know Ling Qi’s personal traumas when he invited her to the adventure.
Now the temple is locked away, and she'll likely never speak to him again.
Xuan Shi's POV immediately after the conclusion of the temple adventure.

Do you think you'll be reading Threads Of Destiny further on Sufficient Velocity, or sticking with Royal Road?
I’ve never checked out the series though sufficient velocity weirdly enough? I probably will take a look at some point in time in the future though. I do find the pipeline of quest on sufficient velocity to story on royal road conceptually very interesting.

heyo, i shared your Bain Meizhen and Gu Xiulan fanart on the Forge discord (i linked to your tumblr, not just reposted it) and the author liked it! as did several other people too, including me ofc!
Oh my gosh! Thank you for letting me know, that is so cool!
I have one more book to read before I'm all caught up. Li Suyin is also a favorite of mine so I might end up drawing her too.
#Bai Meizhen had some other fanart out there but I thought giving her parted hair so she didn't look related to the snow maiden family#Gu xiulan was the hardest i think.. out of the two#I also really like Zeqing and may draw her easily since she has references#forge of destiny#my posts that I made

keep in mind, the places you'll go: a Destiny 2 AMV
My first ever animated video is finally done!! It's been 2 straight months of hard work learning to animate and improving my video editing skills, and I'm super psyched to be able to share it with you all. I've wanted to make something else since the response to Lemon Boy from last year was so good, so here's a little retrospective on where we started and how far we've come, just before Final Shape.
Check it out HERE: 👉 https://youtu.be/UumGULU9qNU 👈
Thanks for all the good times, Bungie. See you on the other side, Guardians.

This isn't a theory or anything, just based on vibes alone. If Bells Hells do happen to seek out other prime deities for guidance or boons, the Moonweaver would be so juicy for Dorian...
#everything he lets people see is by his own design#she is the goddess of illusion#he has gotten romantic vibes from someone since early in the campaign (so far unrequited)#(according to the FIRST 4 sided dive episode ffs)#she is the goddess of hidden love#they both share the chaotic good alignment#he feels as if the hells are drifting#as if his feelings have never really mattered#he knows he's on borrowed time regarding grieving#her commandments include seizing your own destiny and protecting yourself from despair and forging new memories#(also as a purely selfish/ship driven symbolism: we would have big moon/little moon and will telling orym to not live in his shadow)#(cue dorian being blessed by the goddess of Catha(Will)'s light)#anyway i just think it would be neat#but i don't really think they're gonna go hunting for gods to help them VM style nor does dorian NEED a god's help but i digress#dorian storm#critical role spoilers#campaign 3#dorym#ramblings

Variks the Loyal - HeroForge
Oh. My. GODS ABOVE!!! This took me a few weeks to get to where I liked it. But uhh... with the current kitbashing limits and decal limits, this was the best I could do for now.
Hopefully they'll add more spaces for both in the future so I can improve our favorite bug grandpa!! <3

She had been so close to reaching her evacuation point with her mock unit in the last drill. She had left the pass behind them filled with mist, phantoms, and Zhengui, stymying their pursuers… or so she had thought. It would be hard to forget the sight of Guan Zhi silhouetted against the evening sun, Zhengui’s bulk lifted over her head in the instant before her not-so-little brother had been hurled at her like a screaming meteor and collapsed the passage they were going to use to escape.
