Eddie's mom was a free spirit who got taken too soon but educated her son in anything and everything that she found interesting. And she found A LOT of things interesting.
Eddie still secretly keeps these interests and sure, some of them are expected (weed and the best strains), some less so (obsessive reading and perfect knowledge of Edith Piaf). Eddie can even make fantastic mixed drinks ("My mom worked as a bartender for a bit and she practiced at home, what are you staring at, Henderson?!") and can quote most of Le Fleurs Du Mal from memory.
Steve learns to accept and even expect this. Mythology? Of course. Random bits of knowledge from history? Of course. The man only knows SOS in Morse code but can tie nearly every single knot known to humanity? Weird, but it's Eddie.
But then he finds out Eddie knows a fuck ton about horoscopes and astrology. It only takes a single moment of distraction on Eddie's part - Steve is complaining about his latest date, a girl Eddie knows from his class, and he scoffs.
"Well, duh. Of course it didn't work out, Steve, her Moon sign's an Aries and yours is Cancer, that's a recipe for a short fling, not a long relationship."
Steve just stares at him.
Eddie's eyes go wide as he realizes what he's just said. "Uh, I mean..." he scrambles for an explanation, "...she...sounds really stubborn?" he says slowly.
Steve blinks once. Twice. Then his mouth twitches upwards. "What is your Moon sign?"
Eddie feels like it should be a joke, but Steve is patiently waiting for his answer, encouraging smile and those fucking delicious moles. "I'm...uh. I'm a Scorpio. Moon sign, that is," he mutters and hypnotizes Steve's left eyebrow. "Which is...you know. People think it sucks."
"And does it?"
He snorts and shakes his head. "Nah, well. You know, we can be kinda...secretive? But Moon signs are all about your emotions and the inner you, so...it takes a while to get to really understand Moon Scorpios, but then we're the most loyal bunch you'll ever find."
Steve just nods, still smiling. "That's cool, doesn't sound bad at all. But - are you compatible with a Cancer Moon?"
And Eddie probably should have asked "hey, what the fuck," but someone is asking him about his interest, no irony and all that, and that isn't something frequent according to the Munson doctrine. "Oh yeah, absolutely. I mean, Scorpios can be a bit intense, but they're both water signs, you know? And it depends on the Sun sign and rising too, so..."
Somehow, they spend the whole evening discussing astrology. Well, Eddie is. Steve is just listening and asking questions.
Somehow, Eddie manages to calculate both of their charts (because Steve asked).
Steve asks a lot of stuff. "How would you make someone with your chart open up?", "What would be an ideal date for that kind of person?", "Is there something I should be careful about?" and Eddie answers everything but somewhere deep thinks man, I really envy the girl he's doing this for. She's lucky she shares the same birthday and place of birth with me.
It only clicks two weeks later when Steve invites Eddie to hang out and takes him to an alleged haunted mansion. Which...might have been one of the more outlandish ideas Eddie gave him, but he said he would actually love that and that it would fit with the Scorpio dark and brooding aesthetic, if Steve's girl is like that.
He stares at the haunted house, at Steve's sweater (the one Eddie told Steve suits him the best) and a small picnic basket and he realizes.
I gave Steve Harrington a complete guide to dating me.
Steve smirks at him and gently touches his hand, careful not to spook him. "So, what does your Scorpio Moon say?"
Eddie groans and, after briefly checking that no one is around, quickly presses his lips to Steve's cheek. "Apart from "Eddie Munson, how the fuck didn't you notice sooner?" It's purring."
The younger man laughs and Eddie could bask in that sound forever. "Pretty sure scorpions can't purr."
"With you, pretty boy? They sure can."

MUSIC (THE SHORTHAND OF EMOTION)
It was his high school Latin professor who claimed one must be au fait with a number of languages in order to appreciate the world’s hidden meanings, and if Oliver’s learned anything in regards to the walking enigma known as Elio Samuel Perlman, it’s that while he may be fluent in English, French, and his native Italian, the medium of music remains his preferred method of communication; and via which, he expresses himself perfectly.
The frustrated chords of Chopin and Rachmaninoff, for example, born of their initial games of cat-and-mouse.
The melancholic strains of Elgar’s Nimrod when they were no longer speaking.
The beckoning call of Bach’s Capriccio when they were.
But then came the berm. A kiss that shocked him to the core. Two endless nights spent staring at the stars whilst Elio hammered away at the Bösendorfer’s ivory keys. Chain-smoking a pack of unfiltered Gauloises as he clung to his mantra of being good. Grateful. That what they had - a friendship unlike all others - would ultimately suffice.
Only it couldn’t.
Of course it couldn’t.
Under the harsh Riviera sun he’d been reborn, and not even the threat of familial disownment was enough to prevent his leap into the unknown.
The music was different, after that.
After I’ll see you at midnight.
After I don’t want you to go.
After I spoke to your father. He’s happy to extend my stay.
It was richer.
Brighter.
Infused in every carefree giggle: tap-tap-tapped over his too-full heart in the burnished light of dawn.
And Oliver? He loves it.
Loves him.
The inscrutable maestro who toppled his house of cards, and whose unconditional acceptance settled deep and warm and forever in his rib cage.
They’re ensconced in the villa’s living room, the pair of them, one perfectly idle Wednesday afternoon: Elio plunking bits and pieces at randomas he makes the occasional note on a sheet of ubiquitous staff paper. Sometimes just a scale. Sometimes a whole refrain. Head bowed. Lips pursed. Seemingly unbothered by the portly bumblebee that entered through the unshuttered windows, and has since taken refuge atop the tall glass of apricot juice forgotten on the credenza.
Ostensibly, Oliver’s double-checking his next chapter’s pages for Signora Milani when the other man arches in a cat-like stretch; the hem of his Lacrosse polo-shirt revealing a pale swathe of skin at his hip. Rising from the plush piano bench, he wanders over to the corner, and Oliver’s curiosity sees him setting his revisions aside as Elio casts an eye over his parents’ extensive record collection: running his thumb along the stiff, cardboard spines.
His face is unreadable as he makes his selection. Slides the vinyl from its protective sleeve. Blows the dust from the vintage turntable, then aligns the stylus with the album’s outer groove. But the moment Édith Piaf’s voice crackles through the air - smothering the din of the knife-grinder’s whetstone - Oliver finds himselfcaptivated.
Non, rien de rien, it begins as Elio closes his eyes, swaying gently to the mournfully poignant tone. Non, je ne regrette rien…
He’s across the room without conscious decision: feeling a tad self-conscious when he offers an unsteady hand.
Feeling decidedly more so when Elio blinks at him owlishly, before finally reaching to take it.
Ni le bien qu'on m'a fait, the powerful lyrics continue, and his dance partner swallows - clearly bewildered - as Oliver pulls him closer, one palm cradling his slender waist whilst the other flattens their tangled fingers over his left breast pocket.
Time distils as he guides them into a rocking back-and-forth: Elio’s grip sliding from wrist to elbow, then further, lingering on the sweat-damp hair at Oliver’s collar. If he didn’t know better, he’d think him the picture of innocence, yet the fact that he does - know better, that is - has him grinning like an idiot when he recognises the genuine emotion beneath his slightly-flushed features.
The three little words that thus far remain unspoken, shining explicitly in his imploring gaze.
“No, I regret nothing,” Oliver translates in a halting whisper, thanking the decisions of his past that irrevocably shaped his future. “Because my life…” he continues, ghosting a kiss to the shell of Elio’s ear. “My joy…” Another, to the hinge of his jaw. “Sweetheart…” The anticipation is glorious. “Today, that starts with you...”

𝐋𝐀 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐄 - g. satoru
summary : after a rough day your friends encouraged you to go to the festival of the village, the moment of dance came into the frame, and by changing partners destiny gave you that one brown-haired man.
notes : it is inspired by the song "La Foule" by Edith Piaf if you understand the lyrics then 🫶🏿 there's a translation online for the ppl who do not understand French!
──── After an especially grueling day, your friends insisted on dragging you to the village festival to lift your spirits. The vibrant atmosphere was filled with colorful lanterns, laughter, and the enticing aroma of food stalls. Despite your initial reluctance, the infectious energy began to seep into your mood, lightening the weight of your earlier troubles.
"Come on, you'll have fun," your best friend nudged you playfully. "You need this."
With a reluctant smile, you allowed yourself to be pulled along. As evening fell, the band struck up a lively tune, signaling the start of the traditional village dance. People gathered in a large circle, and your friends eagerly pushed you towards the center.
"Go on, it'll be fun!" they encouraged.
The dance was a flurry of movement, partners changing every few steps. You were twirled and spun, laughter bubbling up despite yourself. Then, as if by some twist of fate, you found yourself face-to-face with a man who stood out even in the bustling crowd. He had tousled brown hair and striking blue eyes that seemed to twinkle with a hint of mischief. His presence was magnetic, and you couldn't look away.
"Hello there," he said with a charming smile. "Care to dance?"
Before you could respond, his hand found yours effortlessly, and you were drawn into the rhythm of the dance. His lead was confident and smooth, making you feel as if you were gliding. The world around you seemed to blur, leaving only the music and the two of you.
"What's your name?" he asked, his voice warm and inviting.
"(Y/N)," you replied, breathless. "And you?"
"Satoru," he said, his smile widening. "It's a pleasure to meet you."
As the music played on, you lost yourself in the dance. Each step felt synchronized, as if you had danced together countless times before. The crowd around you faded, and for a few magical moments, it felt like you were the only two people in the world.
"So, (Y/N)," Satoru said, spinning you around gracefully, "what brings you to the festival tonight?"
"My friends dragged me here," you admitted with a laugh. "I had a rough day, and they thought this would cheer me up."
"Looks like they were right," he said, a twinkle in his eye. "I can't remember the last time I had this much fun." The music reached its crescendo, and Satoru pulled you close for a final spin. As the dance ended, you found yourself inches from him, your breath mingling in the cool night air.
"Thank you for the dance," he murmured, his voice soft. "I don't think I've ever enjoyed a festival as much as tonight."
"Me neither," you said, your heart pounding. "This was...unexpected."
"Unexpected, but wonderful," Satoru agreed, his smile turning a bit more serious. "Would you like to walk around with me? There's still so much to see." You nodded, and the two of you wandered through the festival, talking and laughing as if you had known each other forever. Satoru was charming and funny, and you found yourself opening up to him in ways you hadn't expected.
"Tell me about your rough day," he said at one point, his tone gentle. You hesitated, then shrugged. "Just work stuff. Nothing I couldn't handle, but it was one thing after another. I was pretty down before coming here."
"Well, I'm glad you came," Satoru said. "It's funny how a random encounter can change your whole day, isn't it?"
"Yeah," you agreed, smiling up at him. "It really is." As the night grew late, the festival began to wind down. Your friends found you, their eyes widening in surprise when they saw you with Satoru.
"Looks like someone had a good time," one of them teased.
Satoru chuckled. "I'd say so. It was a pleasure meeting you, (Y/N). I hope we can do this again sometime."
"Me too," you said, feeling a flutter of excitement.
With a gentle kiss on your hand, Satoru bid you goodnight, disappearing into the crowd. As you walked home with your friends, you couldn't help but feel that destiny had played a hand in bringing you and Satoru together. The village festival, with its lights and music, had become the backdrop for the beginning of something extraordinary.
"Do you think you'll see him again?" your friend asked as you walked home.
"I hope so," you said, smiling at the memory of his smile. "I really hope so."
The rough day that had begun so bleakly had ended in a way you could never have imagined. And as you lay in bed that night, you couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning of something wonderful.

hi!! 5 and 21 for regulus please <3
Aye Yooo!! (Thank you~)
Those are really good ones too!
5- I actually have a few songs that come to mind for Regulus because I am low-key (high-key) obsessed with making playlists for my various WIPs. So here's just my top 5 (because I have to limit myself here...) and why:
Regulus - ONEWE First of all, the title obviously XD. But aside from that, it's so pretty too! and I looked up the English translation and there's this one line that kills me,
"I'm withering, but you don't be withering Remember me even when I'm gone, yeah, just a little selfishly This star is precious a living and breathing memory Even if it's far away from the earth"
2. Reckless Driving - Lizzy McAlpine & Ben Kessler The StarChaser vibes are simply immaculate in this song.
3. Lonely Star - Oh Wonder Honestly, this one kind of speaks for itself (ToT) 4. Hymne a l'amour - Edith Piaf What can I say? Solmussa's Only the Brave rewired my brain. I listen to this song all the time.
5. Stay - Phemiec This one also have fantastic Starchaser vibes and honestly Phemiec's songs from this album are all in my playlist for The Art of Running for Our Lives. The lyrics, "She made it okay to not be okay. She made me believe that someone would, that someone could Stay" just really hit hardest with a pleasant mix of Black Brothers angst and StarChaser <3 21- I think that my favorite thing to do while writing Regulus is to give him some sort of obsession with the stars.
I know it's kind of a cliche answer, but I'm also the type of person who will step out of the house at 3 am to just look at the sky for a second and exist in that space for a little bit. I love the stars so much and my biggest dream is to go to one of those Dark Sky Conservatories and my goal is to project that onto Regulus and Sirius in anyway possible. <3
I also love writing him to be happy. I put this man through absolute hell because the more they hurt, the better the comfort. (and since I'm a slut for happy endings and hurt/comfort, it just makes all the pain so much more worth it! My least favorite thing..? I'm not gonna lie, I actually really love writing Regulus. I find it a lot easier to write from the perspective of a character with a lot of emotional depth and trauma than anything else. Oddly enough, because of this, I actually struggle a bit more with writing James.
I guess if you'd like another answer, it would be smut. Not because I don't like it, but because the last time I wrote a full smut scene was on Wattpad when I was in high school. Which I graduated from in 2016. 😂 (The worst part is that it still exists on the internet forever. 😔)

Picking up the pace
Summary
When he enters the bookstore, Crowley does not expect to see his angel dancing while dusting. For the first time, he realizes that he's not going too fast for Aziraphale anymore.
Could it be that his angel has finally picked up the pace?
Notes
What if, for once, it was Aziraphale who was going almost too fast?
On AO3
Rating G - 625 words
When Crowley arrived at the store that evening, he hadn't expected to find his angel dusting the store's furniture, swaying gently to the rhythm of the song playing on the old gramophone.
He watched him in silence for a few moments before walking up to him and placing his hands on his hips.
Aziraphale jumped, dropping the duster in his hand.
"Crowley!"
Crowley turned him deftly in his arms and said softly, "Dance with me, angel.
Aziraphale shook his head gently and replied with a pout, "You know I can't dance, I mean that kind of dance."
Crowley took Aziraphale's hands and put them on his shoulders, saying, "Neither can I, but that won't stop me from doing it."
At first they didn't move as Edith Piaf's voice echoed through the store.
No, nothing at all
No, I regret nothing
It's all been paid for, swept away, forgotten
I don't care about the past
Then they began to sway gently, eye to eye, and Aziraphale, his cheeks slightly flushed, said with a smile, "I doubt you could call it dancing."
Crowley rolled his eyes and shrugged, "Who cares, it's just you and me."
He pressed Aziraphale against him a little tighter, and the angel naturally wrapped his hands around his neck, resting his cheek on the demon's shoulder.
Crowley tucked his chin into the curly hair and they continued to sway to the rhythm of the song.
My sorrows, my pleasures
I no longer need them
Swept away the loves
With their tremolos
Swept away forever
I'm starting over
"Yes," Aziraphale breathed against Crowley's shoulder.
The demon frowned and asked, "Yes what?"
"Let's start over," Aziraphale replied softly, still with his cheek on the demon's shoulder.
Crowley stepped back a little, causing the angel to raise his head and ask, looking even more confused than before, "What do you mean?"
Aziraphale raised his hand and placed it gently on the demon's cheek before saying in a confident voice, "Move in with me."
Crowley gasped, "What?"
Aziraphale repeated in the same tone, in an even clearer voice, "Move in with me."
Crowley replied hesitantly, "Yes?"
Aziraphale chuckled softly, "Is that a question or a statement?"
The demon seemed to regain his wits and his lips broke into an open smile as he replied, "Yes. Yes."
Then he leaned toward Aziraphale's face and was about to kiss him when he stopped and said, "But... there's a problem."
It was the angel's turn to be confused and he inquired, "Which one?"
Crowley couldn't hide the playful gleam in his eyes as he replied, "My plants come with me. I can't throw them on the street or leave them in my Bentley."
Aziraphale raised an eyebrow and asked, "Could this be what humans call a package deal?"
Crowley shook his head, winked, and replied, "It would be more like love me, love my dog. Love my plant, in this case."
Aziraphale smiled gently as he replied, "I don't see the problem with that, my dear."
"Then it's a deal."
Crowley closed the distance between them, sealing their "deal" with a tender kiss before burying his face in the angel's neck.
Crowley murmured against his skin, "This time it's you who's almost too fast for me."
Aziraphale chuckled softly as he felt the demon's smile against his skin and replied quietly, "And here I was thinking I'd finally picked up the pace?"
Crowley harrumphed against his skin, eliciting another chuckle from the angel. Then they resumed their swaying to the sound of the singer's voice as she sang the last words of the song at the top of her lungs.
No, nothing at all
No, I regret nothing
For my life
For my jovs
Today
it all starts with you

#6 for piarles pls (Dancing to their favorite song)
Hi Anon, I'm going to use this song. Which like...Logan Lore, but my grandparents lived in Paris in the 50's for a time and I grew up listening to Edith Piaf records when I was at their house. And every time I hear Edith, I get all emotional and dumb and it reminds me of my grandparents dancing in the living room together, so perhaps it's not their favorite song, but it reminds them of their own grandparents and it makes them nostalgic and squishy - this song in particular is a bit sad if my grandmother's frankly horrible French is to be believed.
Charles was twenty-three when he realized that what he had with Pierre wasn't what other people had.
It happened when Pierre was standing in Charles' kitchen listening to him chatter on and on about something that didn't even matter when Pierre had pulled his phone out and started playing something that sounded like...having dinner with his grandparents.
"Dance with me?" Pierre had asked him, grin too sharp.
"What are you doing?" Charles had laughed, letting himself get swept up in Pierre's arms, allowing himself to be kissed, falling into the blue of Pierre's eyes.
"You know that I will love you forever, Charles?" Pierre had whispered at the end of the song, and Charles had known.
In the same way he had known that he would be in F1 someday. In the same way he had known that he bled for Ferrari. In the same way he had known how that first win would taste.
He had known that he and Pierre would be forever.
And he had been shown that time and time again. Almost always with an old song and a slow dance in the kitchen and a deep kiss.
Pierre sways him around in Milan and Monaco and Miami and every time he does, he says the same thing. "You know that I will love you forever?"
Charles knows.
As he watches his friends break-up and make-up and chase love that never lasts, he has Pierre and he has kitchen dancing and he has a love that is set apart.

supernatural s11e14 the vessel (w. robert berens)
don't judge, nic. (generally historical fiction is not my jam. the sigh i sighed when the title screen with nazi-occupied france came up... also why i immediately get tired over old timey men of letters stuff)
hold the phone, i know that music intro! it's non, je ne regrette rien by edith piaf - which was used to wonderful effect in inception. spent far, far too long trying to find a clip of it, everything is garbage quality and it's not streaming anywhere i can get it easily
well, i am definitely on board with stabbing nazis, with impunity. (and gee, men of letters related, color me surprised :p)
haha ok but wait
SAM 'Cause I found something. I mean, we need something. Magic. A weapon strong enough to give us a shot against Amara. So, I've been looking outside the lore in history. And I found this, the Vichy Memorandems. They were Nazi communications that puzzle historians to this day. And they speak of a super weapon obtained by the Ahnenerbe, said to be strong enough to win the war.
reminds me of the magicians rhinemann ultra
the magicians s2e2 hotel spa potions
I mean, it was amazing reading about how you used the Rhinemann at Gettysburg to help win the war for the Union. And it was you who slipped it to Rupert Chatwin for the Battle of the Bulge. I mean, you changed history.
the magicians s2e3 divine elimination
The spell that won World War II is called the Rhinemann Ultra? Sounds like a not-so-great beer.
and someone had to power-up with god .... juice (semen) to be able to cast it. anyway. god this is going to take forever.
SAM Well, these memos refer to it as "The Hand of God." I mean, that was sort of a catch all term for several objects he touched on Earth in Biblical times. But they're believed to contain traces of His power. DEAN Yeah, well the Nazis believed a lot of things. SAM Dean, Lucifer's caged. God's MIA, the only beings strong enough to battle Amara are gone. If we're gonna fight her, what better way to arm up than with an actual dose of His power?
just sayin. familiar!
so dean i got a pro-tip here for you. have more than one source of caffeine on-hand at all times. that way even if you're out of power or machine breaks or no grounds or whatever, you can have coffee. personal fan of starbucks doubleshot cans. and it reminded me of the self-heating coffee cans in the neuromancer universe way back when they first came out and i've been drinking them for my first coffee of the day since :p (william gibson writes about coffee a lot.)
answers the incapacitated crowley question i had
distressing. i generally like crowley, even if i don't like what he's getting up to. and having him in this forced pet play torture thing is pushing some really upsetting and unpleasant buttons for me. at least they let us know he's still in there fighting i guess sooner rather than later
DEAN Just in case things go sideways, somebody needs to be left standing to take care of the Darkness. We can't risk us both! And at the moment, I'm the least valuable player! You both know that I can't kill Amara, so the least I could do is get the thing that we need so that you can! SAM So you expect me to sit here and ride pine while you can Cas go play Jules Verne? DEAN Yes! No. I - who?
so he just used a 20,000 leagues under the sea reference but doesn't know who jules verne is? sure, jan. anyway. sure, yes, get dean and lucifer!cas alone on a sub together, sounds great. handwave away sam's confusion about logistics of time travel without wings
SAM (Resigned) Be safe. DEAN When am I not?
ha ha.
oh, sam, i feel you.
LUCIFER Right. We'll double down on what screwed us the first time. You're really bringing your A ideas today. I can't believe I lost it. (sighs) Him. Can't believe I lost Dean.
and now dean is alone there, great. trying to figure out what submarine movie this is reminding me of but all i can figure i've seen enough is the hunt for red october (which is cold war) mashed with some vague memory of enigma machine on a sub thing - maybe from cryptonomicon? (book by neal stephenson which was kind of a mashup of current and historical fiction)
jackles is doing a good job with this and the production quality is nice but i'm emotionally detached and just want it to be over with. lucifer isn't even half assing his castiel cosplay but i guess sam is too distracted with imminent death for dean if they don't fix the problem
SAM Wait a second. I remember Bobby told me when you needed strength to retrieve us from the past, you used him to power up, you touched his soul, right?
LUCIFER That's right, I did that. But that procedure can be fatal. SAM Use my soul. That way maybe you'll have enough power to wield the spell. LUCIFER That isn't necessary. SAM It's worth the risk. Cas, Dean needs our help. I trust you.
ugh. the unknowingly begging for torture from the thing that tortured you for (an unknown but presumably) very long time, yeah. turns my stomach. is this over yet. at least the cat is out of the bag right after.
DEAN So. Cas. SAM Yeah. What do we do? DEAN What else? We hunt Lucifer, trap the bastard, and save Cas. SAM Like I said. Lucifer may be in control now, but Cas may not come back willingly. I mean he chose it. DEAN No. No, not possible.
guess we're not mad about him saying yes to lucifer? all righty.
getting in a lingering beauty shot
and closing with non, je ne regrette rien again

There are things known and there are things unknown and in between are the doors.
- Jim Morrison, Letters from Joe
Jim Morrison was an enigma and to this day is considered one of the most influential figures in rock and roll history. Morrison’s music - like him - was revolutionary and influenced some of the greatest musicians, artists, and poets of the 20th and 21st Centuries. A rebel and a nonconformist who took the world by storm, Morrison was mysterious but had no qualms about letting out his glorious wild side for all to see, and he believed that in order to create, one must first destroy, a motto that led him to his premature demise.
Many viewed Morrison as a reckless force of nature and a bad influence (we’re talking parents and concerned grandparents). He actually had an IQ of 149 and developed a profound interest in poetry, devouring the romantic works of William Blake and the contemporary Beat verse of Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac while composing his own poems.
Jim Morrison became a legend despite having died at the age of 27, a striking and unique figure who remained in the annals of rock forever. Morrison thus became part of that fateful 27-year-old club that includes his peers Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. And to which Amy Winehouse or Kurt Cobain would later join in the later decades. Jim Morrison’s death shook the world on 3 July 1971.
There are two different stories behind Jim Morrison’s cause of death. Both of them are tragic. The most commonly told tale involves Jim Morrison going to the cinema in Paris and returning to his apartment to listen to music after dinner and being found dead in a bathtub. He is said to have died of a heart attack. Chosen to be laid to rest quietly, no proper investigation was performed to find the main cause of Jim Morrison’s death.
Another more harrowing story has received more traction in recent times. It highlights a darker picture of his life, one in which he had died of an overdose and was hauled back to his apartment by drug dealers. Jim Morrison’s final hours are a mystery because France did not require postmortem examination at that time. His girlfriend, Pamela Courson told the police that she had found him dead in the bathtub at about 6 am. She also battled drug addiction and died of a drug overdose three years later.
To many, his death seemed like the result of a downward spiral. Fans knew that Jim Morrison struggled with addiction and fame. After the trial, he was found guilty of profanity and denied the charges. Stardom had taken a toll on Jim Morrison and he tried to find peace in Paris. During his time in the city, he wrote every single day. People thought that he was finally healthy and happy. Some of his last pictures capture a young, fit man. The news of his death shocked everyone even though it was not as surprising. Jim Morrison and Pamela Courson have been accounted for indulging in old habits. They used to frequent Parisian nightclubs, the last thing he did before his death.
Living in Paris one of the first things one does is to make the obligatory visit to Père Lachaise Cemetery where Morrison is buried alongside other iconic artists such as Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, Marcel Proust, Frederic Chopin, Isadora Duncan, Sarah Bernhardt, Maria Callas, Rossini etc. He’s not of my generation obviously but there is no question that the music of my parents generation was way cooler than anything today. That’s just my opinion. Listening to The Doors seemed like the perfect sound track to a misspent youth in boarding school.
A musician and a group considered among the most influential and innovative in rock history can never cease to be topical. Jim Morrison with his voice and antics brought drama to rock and roll. If Elvis Presley embodied the rock of a shameless performance if the Beatles and the Beach Boys gave the genre an almost symphonic dimension, and if Bob Dylan transferred more literary content to electric format then Jim Morrison of the Doors took the drama.
The first great attribute of the Doors frontman Jim Morrison was his voice and the charisma of his presence. The man that started shy on stage, with his back to the audience, would become an omnipotent monster, breaking down the limits of performance, even if doped by the effects of acids. With him, rock has never been so dangerous and rebellious, without ever losing the jazz of his voice.
Critics then and today have said that Morrison wasn’t a great singer because he had limited range. It’s true he had a limited range as I don’t think he ever wandered out of his range, which was on the low side. I think Jim Morrison was very shy about singing and didn’t quite know what to do at first … he was a lover of words in the first place, and managed to hear melodies that would be a good vehicle for the words but he sang very carefully at first, careful to enunciate clearly and make his voice heard. I think for him it was more important that the words were heard by the audience than that his voice should sounds cool. Later he started coming on stronger, risking some screams and weird voices, but I think he was more comfortable reciting words rather than singing them.
To me it’s irrelevant if he was technically a good or a bad singer. Morrison had a powerful dramatic voice that connected and a great rock and roll scream. Is there anything more important than those things in rock music?
As I listen more albums by The Doors I am taken in by the hypnotic quality of his speaking voice, which is partially just genetic and partially learned through his involvement in the theatrical arts makes even the most silliest of lyrics sound profound and powerful. Of course he wasn’t an opera singer, or even your typical pop singer - he had wavering tone sometimes, and, especially as his voice deteriorated from substance abuse and other life-style related choices, his range drastically shrunk.
To me Morrison didn’t need to have a pretty voice with the type of stuff he was singing, and his unique style made Robbie Krieger’s conventional pop or folk-rock songs sound deeper, more profound. He was a brilliant all around front-man. He may have frustrated some of his bandmates with his behaviour, and I don’t blame them but we would not be talking about The Doors today if it weren’t for Jim Morrison and his voice. I think as a vocalist he was true to his own natural voice and didn’t try to develop it as an “instrument”. I think it’s the conviction and truth in his voice that makes him easy to listen to.
