I volunteered to help with my son's preschool trip to an off-site forest school this morning. It was mostly adorable, somewhat gross (actually not the mud kitchen, but the kid who is really into spitting in people's faces at the moment), and very muddy! I'm so grateful that my job allows me the flexibility to say yes to this sort of thing. He was very excited that I was coming! 😍 One thing that cracked me up was that when we got on the minibus, one of the teachers asked the children "what kind of animals do you think we'll see today?" And the kids shouted out these suggestions: 1. Dinosaurs 2. Elephants 3. Rhinos 4. The Importance of Outdoor Play

The natural environment allows children to explore their whole selves and learn in all different areas. It gives children the opportunity to control and direct their own learning, having teachers facilitate their learning when necessary in support of the children’s discovery and interests. Nature’s Classroom- Forest kindergartens in the Tennessee Valley experienced the benefits first hand with ADHD children- children who struggled with focusing their attention on a task were able to follow directions and focus their attention once outdoors. The outdoors brings excitement to all children and before we know it children are learning independence, social cooperation, problem-solving, and much more.

Another glorious day at forest school for grown ups! These sessions leave my heart and soul feeling so full. We whittled, baked potatoes, cooked pasta with wild garlic pesto and nettle soup, laughed a lot at the innuendo, did some grounding and left offerings. The opportunity to just be in such a breathtaking space, without pressure to be good at anything or produce something is so freeing it's an honour to be able to provide such a gift. You know it's good when no knew wants to leave.
