Friendship Bracelets

I came up with this in my head last night while I was half asleep lol. Takes place during season 1 because that’s where I am on my rewatch of NCIS.
Reader is mid-late twenties. No warnings, just fluff! Just a cute lil blurb.
You work as a forensic scientist side by side with Abby at NCIS. She’s one of your closest friends there, along with Kate and Ducky (you’re the only one who’s really interested in hearing his stories).
DiNozzo is that annoying order brother you can’t stand yet love dearly at the same time. Gibbs, on the other hand.. You really weren’t sure.
He could be a hard ass boss, and yet there were times he’d just sit and listen to you talk, head cocked with that familiar little smile on his lips, blue eyes amused. You sometimes expected him to tell you to “get to the point”, but he didn’t. Just listened.
You were as much a coffee addict as he was, and you were always pleasantly surprised when he’d bring you a cup in the morning, pressing a light peck to your cheek before getting to work.
It was shortly after you started that your love for arts and crafts came out. You and Kate loved sketching things out together, and you were always making little trinkets for Abby.
But one night, unable to sleep, you made friendship bracelets for everyone. You chose specific colors for everyone, little charms that reminded you of them, and took them in the next day.
Abby wore hers immediately, grinning ear to ear and showing it off to Ducky, the older man surprised when receiving his and delving into a story about bracelets and the history behind them. You handed out the rest of them through the day, Kate and Tony keeping it at their desk as a little decoration.
But Gibbs surprised you. You half expected him to take the bracelet without comment, setting it aside and delving into the case file in his hands. But he took it and admired the blue beads you pick out, the little wood carving you added on.
And he smiled.
He stood up and pressed that little kiss to your cheek, slipping it on his wrist and walking off without a word.
And he wore it ever since.
There wasn’t a day you saw him without it, and every time he spotted you looking at it he’d smile.

He Did The Thing
gibbs x reader
“I’ll be right down Abbs.” Gibbs said, snapping his cellphone shut. As he made his way to the lab, he had started to wonder where (Y/N) had gone. She briefly mentioned something about going to see Abby for an update on the current case, but that was 20 minutes ago. He didn’t quite catch what she was saying, as he was on the phone with Ducky about an update on the case as well. The first thing he heard as he stepped off the elevator was (Y/N) asking Abby, “Did he do the hot guy thing where he puts his hand on the small of your back to get through a crowd?” “YES” the forensic scientist replied. “I don’t know what it is about that certain gesture, but when someone does it-” (Y/N) was interrupted by Gibbs asking, “What you got for me Abbs?” as he handed Abby a Caf-POW.
(Y/N) was starting to blush, and part of her hoped Gibbs didn’t hear the conversation, but the other part of her hoped very much that Gibbs heard the conversation. She’s had a crush on her silver-haired, steely-blue eyed boss, since she started working for team Gibbs as the new probie. But now, as a full-time NCIS Special Agent, she felt that having a crush on her boss maybe isn’t the best. But there’s something about the way his vivid baby blue eyes stare into (Y/N)’s when he’s talking to her, or maybe it’s how softly he speaks to Abby compared to the rest of the team. The ‘ding!’ of Abby’s computer brought (Y/N) out of her thoughts, and back into reality. Abby shared the new update, and Gibbs and (Y/N) went back upstairs to the bullpen to share Abby’s update to the rest of the team.
The next bit of the workday seemed to go agonizingly slow. Half the team was waiting for someone to call them back, and the other half went through evidence and bank records. At a certain point, Abby called everyone into the lab, asking for help. She needed extra hands to help with something, and wasn’t sure who could do what to help. It felt a little crowded in the lab with everyone being there, but (Y/N)’s thoughts abruptly faded away when she felt Gibbs’ hand on the small of her back, while trying to navigate through the crowd. She wondered if he overheard the conversation between herself and Abby, and the smirk on his face confirmed her thoughts. After that flirtatious gesture, she started to wonder if there was a chance he felt the same. And the way his beautiful blue eyes stared into hers across the room, gave her a little more hope that one day there could be something more between Gibbs and herself.

Deadly Countdown - Introduction
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Gibbs x reader
Warnings: Angst, fluff, some violence
The day began quite normally at NCIS.
The employees streamed in one by one and the office came to life.
Like every morning, Gibbs got a coffee and then sat down at his desk. Sullen but dutiful, he looked through his mail.
The paperwork wasn't his thing, but unfortunately it was part of the job. Some letters and information sheets were interesting, others were simply unnecessary. He immediately threw the latter in the trash with an internal sigh of frustration and a corresponding eye roll.
He really wasn't interested in who was celebrating their anniversary or making the mistake of getting married and since that was unimportant to doing his job, he could safely ignore this information.
He had almost worked his way through the pile when he noticed a strikingly inconspicuous envelope.
He carefully picked it up and looked at it closely. The letter had not been stamped and his gut feeling told him that something was wrong with it.
Taking the least possible risk, Jethro opened the envelope and pulled out the paper inside.
It was a message to him and it said:
“Gibbs…I want you to suffer like I suffered, you bastard.
Today at 8:00 p.m. my bomb will blow up something that you care about very much.
And so that you believe me that I am serious, you should check to see if your forensic scientist showed up for work today.”
Gibbs felt a chill run down his spine. He immediately called the gate, but no one had seen her there. When he hung up the phone and got up to go to the lab, Tony was just arriving for work.
“DiNozzo. Have you seen Abby?” he asked his teammate, but Tony just shook his head in confusion.
That was not good. That was not good at all. Worried, Gibbs walked quickly to the elevator in the direction of Abby's lab. He had a really bad feeling and it was getting worse.
As soon as the elevator doors opened, he stormed into Abs' sacred realm and called for her, but there was no answer. His unease grew. There was no sign of you either. Maybe you had seen her or knew where she was, after all you are her assistant.
And indeed, the next moment you came around the corner with a coffee in your hand. He loved this moment when he saw you for the first time in the morning, but there was no time for that now, he had to find Abby.
Concerned and deeply worried, he took you by the shoulders: "Have you seen Abby? Do you know where she is?"
Wow, what was going on here? You looked at him questioningly and just answered: "No. Isn't she here yet?"
"No," he said shortly and stormed back to the elevator. Still no sign of Abby. Gibbs mentally went through other possible places where she could be. But at this time of day there were really only two: at Ducky's in the autopsy or at home.
So his next stop was a visit to Ducky. On the way there he called Tony and ordered him to go to Abby's apartment and check that everything was okay.
Much to his dismay, his own visit to Ducky was just as unsuccessful as the one in the forensic lab. He could only hope that Tony was more successful.
When DiNozzo's cell phone number flashed up on Gibbs' device at this thought, hope briefly grew, but it was suddenly destroyed by Tony's words: "Boss, there was a burglary here. She was kidnapped."
The blood froze in his veins when he heard that and he looked at his watch. It was 07:59:53 in the morning. That meant they had 12 hours to find Abby, rescue her, and to eliminate the terrorist...a lot to do...
...and the clock was ticking relentlessly…

Hi Love! You Spencer fics give me life btw, Okay, so idk if you've seen NCIS,but there is this goth character named Abby and she is like a forensic scientist . I would love to see Spencer (maybe later seasons) having to work with a reader like Abby. Opposites attract kind of thing / love at first sight/mutual pining .
Hiii, thank u so much for this request. I am sooooooo sorry, that this took me like 2 months to write 😭I hope this isn't too bad (1k) warnings: talk of bombs, fluff
Sometimes you think, that Spencer likes you, like more than just a friend. It's always when you catch him staring lovesick at you or hear him giggle at your stupid science jokes. It makes your heart swell everytime.
But you stop daydreaming about this, when the reality sets in and you realise the big difference between the two of you. Like there's just no way Spencer likes you the way you like him.
You two are complete opposites. Well, that's not entirely true. You and Spencer share love for science and solving things, which is exactly why you are both at the FBI. But other than this, you don't think, that you have much in common.
Your thinking about Spencer is cut short, because there's a literal bomb being placed in front of you. The team is working on a local case. There's a very dangerous bomber, which they are trying to catch.
Your task is to analyse the bomb as best as you can, even the tiniest detail can help the team. It's not often you get to work with the team, especially this close, so you want to do good and not mess it up.
You put on your favourite band and closely study the bomb. As you bop your head to the blasting music, you write down everything that seams important, even the stuff that is not so important, down.
You work fast and in like 2 hours, you are done and happy with you analysis. You sent a text to Penelope, she is usually the one that comes for the papers and you like her, she is a total sweetheart everytime she comes to your lab.
You don't expect her to come right away, so you don't turn the music down even one bit. Honestly, a big mistake from your part.
It's not Penelope, who comes to grab the analysis papers and also it's not later, it's right away. Spencer was basically pushed towards the elevator to go to your lab by Penelope. Of course, she knows that you two fancy each other (she thinks you'll be the cutest couple) and she's decided, that she's going to get you together, whatever it takes. Even if it means dragging Spencer towards you.
Spencer finds your lab easily, he's been here too many times. But he's never heard the music playing so loud. You don't even hear the door opening or him coming inside. He only gets your attention when he carefully puts his hand on your shoulder as to not scare you, which goes totally the wrong way.
You flinch so hard and jump away from him instantly, that you almost fall on the floor, not to mention the curse words slipping out of your mouth.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," Spencer worriedly apologises.
"Doctor Reid, you scared me," you say with a surprise, you definitely weren't expecting him here. You lower the volume of the music.
"I'm sorry, I called out your name, but I think it was too loud," he explains, stepping from one foot to another.
"It's okay, it's my fault. I put it way too loud. It's just...It's my favourite band," you grin sheepishly at him. Your pink blush in contrast with the black lipstick and eyeliner.
"Really? Have they been your favourite band for long now?" Spencer asks, giving you a small smile.
"Gosh, for so long, I don't even know. Maybe since I've discovered how much I love music," you must have been a kid then, when you found you passion for music, " what about you Dr. Reid, what's your favourite band?"
"Spencer, please call me Spencer," it's his turn to blush again, when he says it. You always call him dr. Reid and even if he knows you are joking, he prefers you calling him Spencer, " a-and I don't really have a favourite band or-or a song."
"What? What do you mean?"
"I just don't really know any music, maybe just some classical," he shrugs his shoulders, " I know, it's bad." He adds when he sees your wide eyes.
"Oh my god, this is actually a crime," you dramatically say, " I would gladly give you some recommendations, but I think time isn't on our side right now." You don't think Spencer would like your kind of taste of music, metal probably isn't his type, but you could definitely look something up for him.
Spencer would like that, like a lot. But yeah, he can't waste time by chatting with you, when there's a serial bomber in the streets.
He really wants to tho, I mean he wouldn't say no to spending time with you, maybe it would give him an actual chance with you. So with these kind of thoughts, he does something very, almost too brave.
"How about over a coffee?" he nervously blurts out and you don't quite know if you've heard right or your imagination is playing tricks on you.
"Over a coffee?"
"O-or tea, whatever you drink...."he adds, words stammering.
"Sure," you agree and give him the nicest smile you can do.
"R-really?" Spencer isn't expecting you to agree, he thinks, you are way out of his league, too pretty to even talk to him.
"Definitely, I'd love that," you reassure him and before you know it, these words escape your mouth, " it's a date, then."
Your dread goes away, when Spencer returns your shy smile and states," can't wait for it, I'll text you, yeah?" He starts to slowly back out of the lab.
"Okay," you giggle, because you realise, that he is forgetting the one thing he came here for, " don't you want the analysis of the bomb?"
"Ohhh," his cheeks go red again," right." He quickly comes back for it and heads for the door. At the door he looks at you for one last time and accidentally walks with his shoulder into the edge of the door.
You can't help but to giggle some more as he embarrassingly laughs and leaves your lab.
In your happy mood, you put the music back on and start thinking of the right songs for Spencer.

The hybrid NCIS: Sydney team is once again offering “two for the price of one” in TVLine’s exclusive peek at the returning CBS drama’s Season 2 trailer.
TVLine’s month-long #2025FirstLook series kicks off today with the NCIS: Sydney Season 2 teaser above, which features cast members Olivia Swann, Todd Lasance, Sean Sagar and Tuuli Narkle, some explodey stuff, and more.
The NCIS: Sydney team was formed in the series’ November 2023 premiere, when a seaman on a U.S. sub parked in Sydney Harbour collapsed and tumbled into the water, dead. The specific circumstances of the mysterious death led to a jurisdictional battle between arriving NCIS Special Agent Michelle Mackey (played by Legends of Tomorrow vet Swann) and AFP (Australian Federal Police) Sergeant Jim “JD” Dempsey (played by Spartacus: War of the Damned‘s Lasance).
In short order we then met cool-as-ice Mackey’s comparatively genial colleague, NCIS Special Agent DeShawn Jackson (Fate: The Winx Saga‘s Sagar), plus JD’s team: AFP Liaison Officer Constable Evie Cooper (Bad Behaviour‘s Narkle), Forensic Pathologist Dr. Roy Penrose (Blue Heelers‘ William McInnes) and interim Forensic Scientist Bluebird “Blue” Gleeson (Neighbours‘ Mavournee Hazel) — all of whom are back for Season 2.
Averaging 6.6 million viewers (with Live+7 playback), NCIS: Sydney was CBS’ second most-watched program of the strikes-delayed Fall 2023 season, trailing only 60 Minutes and tying Survivor. It also emerged as the most-watched freshman show on any network that fall.
All told, NCIS: Sydney was the 2023-24 TV season’s No. 3 most-watched new drama, trailing CBS’ own Tracker (which averaged a Super Bowl-boosted 10.8 million) and Elsbeth (7.4 million).

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN SEASON 2?
In Season 2 of NCIS: Sydney, Mackey and JD’s team, having only just found their feet, will square off against a much more powerful adversary. As teased at the very end of the Season 1 finale — 10-MONTH OLD SPOILER ALERT! — the investigation into Colonel Rankin (played by Hunters‘ Lewis Fitz-Gerald) will reveal a looming destructive chaos that threatens the stability of the region.
In the Season 2 premiere, titled “Heart Starter” and airing Friday, Jan. 31 at 8/7c (leading into Fire Country and a relocated S.W.A.T.), a rogue assassin is on the run, and the NCIS/AFP team will do whatever it takes to crack the case, “even if that means waking the dead….”

NCIS: Roy Pt. 1
You can't remember the last time you had a peaceful sleep.
Maybe since you've been sleeping in your lab all day, trying to find a cure for your friend, Roy.
Roy Sanders, the golden Navy Lieutenant. You often teased him about how he was like Superman with his righteous personality and piercing blue eyes. He just laughed it as he gave you his blinding smile.
He still smiled even when someone close to his work tried to poison him.
It started off small, thought he had a fever and just needed to rest. He had to stop jogging his route near the capital. But one night, he came to your door, eyes bloodshot as he lost his breath.
"I don't trust anyone but you."
He confided in you about the work he was investigating in and that someone in his agency is trying murder him as he got closer in his investigation. You told him he should go to NCIS himself to help him, and stop the person who's doing this to him.
"Let's go to my lab, I'll figure out what's going on with a blood sample and I'll find a cure."
"No don't, I'll go to NCIS tomorrow. They'll help me."
"Roy, you can barely keep your eyes open. What makes you think I'm going to stand idly and watch you die?"
"Because I don't want you blaming yourself that you couldn't save me in time!" He raised his voice.
It was the first time you ever see him so angry, but he was right. You would have blamed yourself every day that you're the one breathing and he wasn't.
"I have to at least try."
He pondered till he nodded his head, agreeing that you would help him. He knew you would go against the laws of science just so he could have a future.
Now you're at your lab, waiting for the test results if your serum could deteriorate the Thallium that was in his bloodstream. You consulted with Abby Sciuto, the forensic scientist at NCIS, and compared notes.
She saw how determined you were to save your friend, but she knew deep down there was more than what you were saying.
You loved Roy.
Ever since you moved to DC, Roy was the first friend you made when you met him at a conference. You loved how positive he was and made every effort to make a difference in the world.
Then suddenly, you heard a beeping noise from the machine that was formulating if the serum was working. You flutter your eyes in confusion till you rush over, looking at the paper that printed the results. You scanned over the stats, muttering what the results were telling you.
You look up from the paper and raced towards your phone, dialing Abby's phone number.
"Abby, I need your help."
+
Your heels clicked loudly in the hallway as you searched for Roy's room. Then, you see Ziva outside of a door, looking at everyone suspiciously.
"Hi, Ziva? I'm-"
"The doctor friend of Lieutenant Sanders. Yes, Abby informed me."
"Then you know that I have the antidote." You said, holding the protective case that held the vials.
"Has it been tested before?" she asks.
"Not exactly-"
"Doctor, I don't doubt your work but if it's not tested, I cannot allow you to worsen Lieutenant Sander's state." Ziva replied, trying for you to step aside.
"Ziva please! Wouldn't you do anything to save the person you love? I have to do this. Either I give him this serum without knowing whether he's going to live or see him slowly die without even trying." You said, your voice thinning.
Ziva looks at you, seeing how much you cared for Roy.
"Alright, I'll call his doctors to help administer the medicine."
She stepped aside as she went to look for them and you look through the window seeing Roy.
He looked paler and even tired and looked... looked like he was just waiting to die. You turn the knob and you walked quietly inside while he slept. You sat in the chair, feeling your palms clammy, trying to calm your nerves.
"You know, I think I have to buy you quieter shoes." Roy said.
You look up and see Roy awake.
"You knew that was me?"
"People could hear your heels in the hall from Canada." Roy joked, making you laugh.
You scoot closer as you hold his hand.
"How are you?"
He shrugs slightly as he gives you a small smile.
"Tired, but I feel I have a few good days in me."
"Don't say that, Roy. You're going to get better." You said.
"All the doctors have told me that I'm not going to live past this month. It's too late now. I've already accepted it, so should you."
You shake your head, feeling the tears go down your face.
"So me being confined in my lab to find a cure for you was for nothing, Roy? I'm not giving up on you like every goddamn doctor in this hospital. You prove them wrong. You're going to walk out of this hospital with a second chance of life. You're going to run your daily morning jogs you've desperately wanted me to join with you."
Roy chuckles, remebering that you'd refuse to wake up at 4 in the morning to run around D.C.
He then turns his head, his eyes growing with doubt and worry.
"I'm dead weight. You need- to move on. Settle down, get a dog, and have that white picket fence life. You should let me go." He said, saying this last part with a whisper.
"I can't do that, Roy."
"Why?"
"Because I- I love you goddamnit." You said, raising your voice.
He was silent, and you stood up, pacing in the small room.
"You know, it was hard to just keep my feelings by myself for the longest time. But I was scared that- that I was going to lose my best friend... whether if I told you how I felt or this-" You gestured around you.
"and I know you don't feel the same way-"
"Who said I didn't?" He asks.
You stop, looking at him by the foot of the bed.
"I'm sorry?"
He chuckles lightly, giving you a cheesy smirk.
"You know, for someone who brags about being the smartest person in the room, you really can't see the answer in front of you."
He tried sitting up, but his strength gave out, so you rushed to his side as you helped him.
"Guess I was scared too of saying something. I trust you with my life but I couldn't have the guts to ask you out."
For some reason, both of you began to laugh at yourselves.
"What is it with us?" You said, sitting on the side of his bed.
"I don't know, but we have impeccable timing." He said, placing his hand on his side. You reached out and intertwined his hand with yours.
Suddenly, Ziva came in with his doctors looking a bit grim.
"It's time for the trial"
After the doctors did the procedure, you cuddled with Roy before heading to sleep. Even if visitors should have left hours ago, Ziva pulled some strings. She was happy to see Roy more hopeful than ever.
Both of you were trying to stay awake, having so much to talk about, but your eyes kept fluttering.
"Promise me... you'll wake up with me in the morning." You whispered.
Roy wasn't so sure of making an empty promise, as the warnings for the antidote would either be a 50/50 chance. But he kissed your temple as he held you in his arms.
"I promise I'll be right here."
Both of you dozed off that night, and both of you were filled with uncertainty and fear.
But one thing is for sure.
Roy would fight for one more day if he could spend it with you.

Fictional Media should embrace the idea of Private Forensics Labs.
I've been holding onto this idea for a while. While in college(focus on writing for performance), i took a class called Chemistry for Science Fiction, which dealt with real world sciences and laws and how they effect genre media. We had lessons such as: how many laws did this fictional lawyer/forensic scientist break? What real would equivilant do we have to the nanotech in Jason X? Etc.
Now, the professor of this class brought a lot of personal experience because he was a forensic scientist for the police. And he brought up this important fact:
Most police departments do not have an all encompassing forensics lab. Police need a specific type of test done? Something that involves specialized equipment and isn't as common or easy as fingerprinting? You go to a privately owned forensics lab that specializes in that. Even something like DrugFire, the US police forces database for firearm identification and cataloging was made by a private company.
So my question is...
Where are all the private forensics labs in fiction?!?
Think about how popular private eyes are in fiction. They are everywhere! We should give them a lab FULL of quirky side characters who love science but don't work for the police!
Think about all the characters who are stuck in police procedurals. The side characters in criminal minds and NCIS who could have more freedom and fun working for the Benoit Blancs of the world.
Look at superheroes. There are plenty of superheroes who go into private i work, why not private forensics? Imagine Peter Parker or Barry Allen opening private labs where they can leave at any time and work with the Alias's and Slam Bradley's of their world!
Why are we wasting this perfect opportunity for character archetypes and storylines
TLDR; Private Forensic Scientists should be as popular in fiction as Private Detectives!

David McCallum was a truly special man who put so much love and care into each and every one of his roles. I absolutely adored him as Donald “Ducky” Mallard in NCIS. A role that he went the extra mile for spending time studying with forensic scientists and even sitting in on autopsies. He was a lovely soul and will be dearly missed.

Like an old married couple - Chapter 1
From the beginning right from the very start you and Gibbs were bickering like an old married couple.
Why? Nobody knows. At least of all you two, but that's just how it were.
You saw each other and were immediately at each others throat. You clash like ice and fire and nobody had the courage to step between you.
Originally you were an FBI trained pilot, but since the NCIS needed a helicopter, a plane and someone who is able to fly them NCIS Director Jenny Shepard and your now ex-boss Tobias Fornell arranged that you transfer to the NCIS under the authority of Jenny.
Since you had not to fly all the time and you have a talent for IT you were taking care of the joint venture software of FBI and NCIS and especially you were taking care of the users and what they are able to see and to do within this software.
So you were reporting to Jenny, but your desk on which you were working from now on was right next to Gibbs - only separated by a thin sound insulation.
Around you there were a lot of co-workers, but due to your special job you only had to do with each other professionally when there were problems with the software.
Working there were really good and the people around you were really nice - except one of them.
First of all there was your new boss Jenny. She was the director of the Washington Department of the NCIS, red headed, in her forties, determined, but kind.
It seemed that she had some kind of connection to the team leader Gibbs.
Then there was Ducky the coroner - a real gentleman and very kind and his assistant Palmer was a nice person too, but his intended jokes not always were understood.
You and Abby the forensic scientist clicked immediately with each other. She was a little bit crazy and a goth and opposite to that you loved neon colors, but you were a little bit crazy too and you shared a good laugh every time you were together.
In the office there was Tim - a cute and nice probie special agent. He seemed to like food, had really good knowledge of computers, but was really shy.
Ziva was short, but seemed to be a very tough agent. She was a really sweet one, stylish and had sometimes troubles in finding the correct wording since she came from overseas.
Tony…yeah, Tony…he was a “very special agent” as he always described himself. He was very good looking, not as young as Tim and Ziva, but a womanizer and very nosy. He was second in command after the team leader Gibbs.
Finally there was…HIM. Leroy Jethro Gibbs the team leader and ex-Marine who had his desk right next to yours.
He was in his fifties and very easy on the eyes with his salt and pepper hair, large trained body and eyes of the iciest blue you have ever seen. Every inch of him screamed authority, but his smile was of that kind to had you melt in a puddle.
On the other side he could walk very silently so he was standing undetected behind you when you didn't expect it. When his team didn't think straight like him and were rambling he head-slapped them. He seemed to catch everything which was said or done.
He never spoke much least of all about personal things and he was never without his holy coffee.
What complicated the things between you two was that he didn't like modern technology and since you were supporting the software with which they all were working you were his declared enemy.
(To be continued...)

It’s a g’week to be an NCIS: Sydney fan, with Season 2 of the spinoff from Down Under kicking off this Friday at 8/7c, on CBS.
NCIS: Sydney follows an eclectic team of U.S. NCIS Agents and Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers who have been grafted into a multi-national task force, to keep naval crimes in check in the most contested patch of ocean on the planet.
The merged team is led by NCIS Special Agent Michelle Mackey, played by DC’s Legends of Tomorrow alum Olivia Swann, and her 2IC AFP counterpart, Sergeant Jim “JD” Dempsey, played by Todd Lasance (Spartacus: War of the Damned). The cast also includes Sean Sagar (Fate: The Winx Saga) as NCIS Special Agent DeShawn Jackson, Tuuli Narkle (Bad Behaviour) as AFP Liaison Officer Constable Evie Cooper, Mavournee Hazel (Neighbours) as AFP Forensic Scientist Bluebird “Blue” Gleeson, and William McInnes (Blue Heelers) as AFP Forensic Pathologist Dr. Roy Penrose.
In the Season 2 opener, titled “Heart Starter,” with rogue assassin “Ana Niemus” (Fringe‘s Georgina Haig) on the run and suspicion swirling around Colonel Rankin (Lewis Fitz-Gerald), the team must do whatever it takes to crack the case on DeShawn’s first day as boss — “even if that means waking the dead.” (And no, that’s not a metaphor.)
TVLine hopped on a Zoom with NCIS: Sydney showrunner Morgan O’Neill to get a taste for the internationally flavoured series’ encore.

TVLINE | Big picture, how would you compare Season 2 to Season 1? Is there anything you decided to lean into? For example, JD seems to be a funnier guy this season. I think, on a global scale, we’ve just been more ambitious — in terms of the production values, in terms of the breadth of the stories we’re telling. But one of the things that’s allowed us to be ambitious is that we now know the characters. We’re not in those first-season days where you’re still trying to work out who they are and how they interact with one another and what the allegiances are, who likes what and who doesn’t.
Now that we’ve established those characters, we have that fabulous opportunity to deepen and to peel back the lid and to actually see what makes these guys tick in a much more profound way, and lean into what we’ve discovered are the qualities of the characters that we like the most. It’s an interesting observation that JD’s funnier, because for me, that’s the kind of deepening that happens in workplaces all around the world. You meet the person on the first day, and you’re like, “I’m not sure I really like them….”
TVLINE | But then you get comfortable with one another and you realize, “Oh, I can make this joke.” “I can make this joke,” or you go through a shared experience that experience bonds you and opens a door, and you walk into a different realm of intimacy of familiarity or affection. But I just feel like, overall, we’ve gone bigger, and we’ve gone deeper.

TVLINE | The logline for this Season 2 premiere has some fans curious about “DeShawn’s first day as boss,” like, “Where’s Mackey? Where’s JD?” Well, look, without spoiling the first episode, there are obvious repercussions for where we left things the end of the first season. A whole bunch of decisions had been made to get JD’s son back, and someone has to “pay the ferryman.” These are not decisions that happen in a vacuum. Protocols have been broken, trusts have been breached, and at some point, the organization is going to come down and say, “How are we going to get through this?” And then, “How are we going to get through this with Mackey and JD sidelined?”
While Special Agent in Charge Ken Carter (Five Bedrooms‘ Bert LaBonté) works out what the hell to do, what happens next is that the most senior NCIS agent in the building steps up and takes the reins, and that’s DeShawn — much to Evie’s delight, because she doesn’t think DeShawn is boss material, let’s say, and she’s more than happy to make him aware of that. [Laughs] The irony is that he actually turns out to be a pretty great boss, in his own way.
TVLINE | I somewhat famously compiled for our readers a glossary of Australian slang for Season 1. Can I expect to make any additions for Season 2? For example, from one of the new episodes, I now know what a “celebrant” is. Here’s the thing that is so interesting, and stop me if I’ve told you this, but I lived in America for 15 years, and when I moved there, I thought, “We’re kind of the same people, right? We have a different accent, but we speak the same language, and culturally, we’re the same.” And then, halfway through it, I realized that there are, like, chasms between us in ways that are really invisible.
I walked into a Canter’s Deli on Fairfax [in Los Angeles], and I walked up to the cold cuts section — we say “the meat counter” — and I said to the lady behind the counter, “Can I have one-and-a-half pounds of pastrami?” She said, “I’m sorry, I didn’t understand that.” I said, “I’d just like one-and-a-half pounds of pastrami,” and she goes, “I don’t understand what you’re asking me.” I said, “OK, I’m confused here, too. I would like some pastrami, and I would like one-and-a-half pounds.” She said, “Ohhhh, a pound-and-a -half!” The point is, there are tiny little nuanced differences in the language which you take for granted.
I would’ve thought that everyone knows what a celebrant is. What is a celebrant in America?
TVLINE | I suppose the closest term is officiant? The officiant, is it? Well, there you go. And frankly, I don’t want to put up my hand as being on the right side of history here, but a celebrant sounds way cooler than officiant. You know what I mean? So, that might be something we can gift the Americans!

TVLINE | Any distinctly Australian locales you’re going to be using this season? Heaps. I mean, we end up in the top end of Australia, up in Darwin, for the climactic last two episodes of the season, and without going into too fine of detail about what that is, because I don’t want to spoil it, you can imagine what’d it be like. The difference is as if if the show was set in Rhode Island, and then you ended up in Texas or Alabama. Sydney’s on the bottom of the southeast part of Australia, and Darwin is in the very top north. It’s the bit that faces Indonesia, and it’s tropical, and it’s filled with saltwater crocodiles…. It’s like the frontier. It’s incredibly different, and it’s exotic in ways that the rest of the show isn’t. So, yeah, that’s part of the ambition I’m talking about. The show was really successful in its first season, and that allowed us confidence — and allowed the network to have confidence in us, asking to stretch our wings even further.
As I said to you the first time we met, my vision of NCIS: Sydney is that it’s the gateway drug to NCIS Australia, because Australia is this vast continent. It’s the world’s largest island. It’s one of the most remote places on Earth and a little bit like the U.S. So, yeah, the landscape, the backdrop is much richer in Season 2.
TVLINE | Any personal runners, personal storylines, for any of the characters? For sure. As I said earlier, one of the ambitions for the show was to deepen our characters and to let our audience in a little bit more, in an NCIS way — which is not to say we do these enormous emotional dumps, because that’s not the show. We drop little breadcrumbs. I don’t know how many seasons it was before we worked out that the ship that Gibbs was building in his basement was named after his dead daughter, but I think it was four or five. Like, 100 episodes, from when we established that boat to where we learned of its significance. That’s one of the secret sauces of the show, that the contract with the audience is “nothing is going to be incidental.” So, hold onto all those tidbits and information, because I promise they’ll actually make sense at some point, even if they don’t make sense now or tomorrow.
In the first episode, there’s a pretty significant revelation about Mackey’s backstory and family life that I’d love to hear your thoughts on. But it really does place a slightly different filter on how we see Mackey interact with her team and with the wider world, because you’re now seeing it with this information that you didn’t have in the first season. Hopefully, a lot of the decisions she made in that first season come into greater context or make more sense, in light of the revelation in the first episode.

TVLINE | Anything on the romance front to preview for Season 2? It’s really interesting, because once this first season had gone to air, a few friends would send me random musings from the Internet, from people who had watched the show and enjoyed the show and had their thoughts about where it was going to go or what it meant, and it’s interesting watching the audience process what they think is going on beneath the surface of our characters. I love that. I find it fascinating.
TVLINE | Like Evie and DeShawn? Season 1 told me they are clearly heading towards an intersection point romantically. That’s interesting. Some people look at that relationship as “brother and sister,” constantly bickering, undermining each other, competing for Mom and Dad’s attention, and I could certainly see that. Some people feel like there’s a natural movement towards a romantic intersection. I don’t want to preempt any of that.
I will say, without being too cryptic, that there is a romantic tension [between two characters] that emerges across Season 2, and it really hits its zenith in the last couple of episodes and hopefully takes the audience a bit by surprise.
