Sure.

Again, i don't know any of the members and this is not by any means factual as I am merely expressing my own thoughts and gut instinct on what my opinion is in regards to the member's personal/ideal type.

Jay:

As I stated in the last post, I think he would be into a very well mannered woman who carries alot of self respect. I don't get the vibe that he would be into looks too much, maybe like 40% appearance and 60% personality. I can see him being into types that are simple, and elegant types that wear little makeup, maybe has some or very little surgical alterations (i dont think he really cares too much about that, but i dont think he'd be into the ones that over do it and do alot to completely change their whole entire look). The people that come close to mind would be like Jisoo, IU, Rose (with natural colored hair) etc. Now, this is my own opinion, but i do see him being the type to more than likely go with a Korean woman, which is why i listed those three above as examples. If he does go with a foreigner, I feel like it would be an American woman but someone he already knew from his childhood or like an Asian American. Idk why, i just get that vibe.

Sunghoon:

Again, as I stated in the last post, Sunghoon would (like Jay) want a very well mannered, proper type of gal. I think he would be 50/50 on looks/personality. I heard he listed Irene as his ideal type, which tells me he likes the type that fits majority, if not all, of the korean beauty standards. IMO, i feel like he'd would only go with a korean woman, and wouldn't be open to date foreigners, merely out of comfort and preference. he comes off as the type that would be very traditional and i just get this feeling he'd be into a an Irene look alike (not to be confused with an ulzzang or 얼짱) like a nice girl that is simplistic and doesn't wear too much makeup, wears nice clothes, and is very easy going. I feel like he cares alot about what his parents think, and that may influence his preference and standards. Considering how immensely supportive they were in his figure skating days, I feel like he has a strong bond with them and like most Asian men, they love their mothers very much and sometimes will tend to go with a woman if she has gained their mother's approval (not saying it's right but it is a thing people...) I can see Sunghoon (not necessarily being the type to rely solely on his parents approval) but i can see him being the type to really be attracted or want someone who is presentable and he feels comfortable to bring to his family. I feel like he comes from a very traditional upbringing and family background.

Heeseung:

So with Heeseung, i can see him being the type to date foreigners, but if it came to settling down in a very serious relationship (like marriage) i get this vibe that he'd most likely marry a korean woman. there is a sliver string of my gut instinct that thinks he'd consider or would marry a foreigner, but he'd be selective on the type of foreigner mainly because of the language barrier. basically, if she speaks english with some korean or is fluent, i think he'd be willing to make that work. Idk why, but again, most asian men love their mothers so much, and i feel like if there was a girl that had some minor attribute that reminded him of his mother (one that makes him nostalgic) like the sound of her voice when she says certain words, or the color of her hair, or the way she smiles, i feel like he really would cherish that since we know how much he loves his mother.

i feel like that heeseung wouldn't really care about looks so much. idk why, i just get this vibe that he might have preferences and some standards but it's pretty flexible. in fact, i actually see him as the type that eludes the 'less is good' aspect. so less makeup, less flashy clothes and jewelry, and i dont think he'd really care about plastic surgery but to be honest, i feel like he'd be the type to really appreciate a woman who is comfortable in her own skin and maybe only had some minor surgeries (like the common ones that they do with their eyes and nose, considering he himself has had some work done. lets be honest now) for some reason, i get this vibe that he'd be into an older girl, likes someone who is mature and carries a sense of classiness and sophistication that only comes with age (IU comes to mind alot whenever i think about this, like her personality).

I also think he'd like pale skin, but also would like a nice olive, tan complexion, and likes a girl with natural hair colors that compliments said complexion. i really do. and if they have a good personality, that pretty much seals the deal for him. someone who maybe looks like IU, Jisoo, Yuna, or even Danielle from new jeans (i know she's a minor, i'm not implicating anything, i'm just using her features as an example) fresh faced, and elegant type of beauty. as for foreigners, I could see him finding someone like Barbara Palvin, Kendall Jenner, Catriona Gray or Kaia Gerber (idk why but i get this vibe that he likes the mature and almost sexy type looks when it comes to foreigners) I feel like (again...imo) i feel like he has a soft spot for Filipina women because...well...Philippines is one of the top three countries that heavily supports kpop, has one of the largest fanbases for kpop, and he has alot of fans from there so i just think..yeah...he has a soft spot for them. if you're Filipina and carry some traits of Catriona Gray (whether its the hair, skin complexion, style, or the bold lips).....yeah...that's a done deal.

Jake:

I feel like Jake and HS are similar in their taste in women. And i also see him preferring korean women out of comfort, but if he met an english speaking woman that carried some or all of the attributes he likes, then he would be down (just like HS). I feel like he and HS are very very similar when it comes to their preferences and ideal types, so it's almost the same, and i also think he might be more attracted to an older girl, but if he met a young girl that carries the personality traits he likes (like that sophisticated and classy attitude) then he would eat that up. Idk why but when it comes to the legal line in enhypen, i see them liking the very mature types. I feel like Rose (looks wise) and Danielle (again, looks wise) are the types he is fond of, but i also think he has a wide variety when it comes to his preferences with foreign women. because so many foreign women are drop dead gorgeous (and i mean like...all over, every country has the most beautiful women i swear) i think the aspect of seeing a woman who is, again, comfortable in her own skin and hasn't had alot of surgiers (no slander against koreans but south korea is the plastic surgery capital of the world and it is very common over there) i feel like the members really find it refreshing when they see a woman who only enhances her looks with some simple makeup (and from what i've seen in all of the fans during these fansigns and fancalls....there are alot of beautiful girls out there, i dont know how these guys keep their cool...no wonder they get so flirtatious).

Like HS, he likes the simplistic types (no heavy makeup, no flashy or costumey looks, etc) as much as people love the ulzzang look, like karina, i really dont think the guys would be into that bc lets face it, those ulzzangs (while beautiful) have lots of makeup, filtering, and surgeries to achieve that look. again, less/simple = good. for the members, i feel like they prefer a simplistic and simple, elegant type of beauty and if you do wear makeup, wear flashy clothes, or get surgery, less is good. (in my opinion that's the vibe i get).

Jungwon:

I feel like Danielle (i know i used her for the third time now) but i feel like her image and features fits JW's type, also IU's visuals. I get this vibe he is more into Korean women, so that's why I feel like he'd be either into a full korean or maybe a half korean like Danielle or Somi before she dyed her hair and adapted the very bold makeup look. I personally think of him being very into the type that are (again) less is good, so simple makeup looks, loose jeans or sweat pants with hoodies and butterfly hair clips that pins your long hair on the back. I kind of get this vibe he's similar to Sunghoon in regards to splitting the personality and visual appearance down the middle, holding them both equal in value.

Sunoo:

So Sunoo is the only one where i don't get any vibes that he really cares too much about looks. If you look presentable, have some sense in fashion and have wide eyes, and an awesome personality, i feel like he'd be into you. if you're smart, know how to take care of yourself and can take care of him, if you're both a giver and taker, and know how to give back and remind him to take, i feel like he'd be really into that. Sunoo gives me humble vibes, i feel like he is a very humble person and would really like someone who is just the same, very humble and kind....super kind.

Niki:

Since this is SFW content, i'm going to include Niki. I get this vibe that Niki can find two appeals attractive. one being the cute appeal, if you have the very youthful and cute, soft look and appeal, he'll like that. but if you also have the very mature, sexy and fierce look, i think he'd like that too. the thing that will seal the deal is the personality, if you're personality is not to his liking, he wouldn't even entertain the idea of bonding. I personally get this feeling he's a little bit (just a tad bit) more into the cutesy appeal. I dont have any examples of real people to use for Niki since i dont really put too much thought into him (for obvious reasons) but i will say that I can see him being heavily reliant on looks because he is at the age where young men are starstruck by visuals, and i do think since he has fame (and ever since i've known about enhypen, he seems to be the most popular of the group...there's something about the youngest in each group that gets people fanatic about them) i think he is cocky (not in a bad way) and is obviously not at all serious about anything other than his career (which is understandable since he is still so young.)

- Model! Aki who gets approached by some scouts from a big shot modelling agency as he’s making his way home from his mediocre corporate job. He’s barely interested when they start asking him how tall he was, if he had any mixed blood in him and if was interested in being a model. To which he politely declines at first but with a rather cold and dismissive tone.

- Model Aki! who at first didn’t have that many followers on his twitter and instagram accounts where he would usually upload his outfits and the occasional selfie along with some of his paintings since he’s also into contemporary and surrealism art. A means of escape from the mundane life. I also think he would be into photography so sometimes he’d also post pics he had taken on his camera for his followers to see.

- The same modelling agency had contacted him through his socials this time, offering a good amount of money and told him he’d get to travel to various parts of the world. Now that seemed to pique his interest because then he began compiling a portfolio in case he ever made up his mind to join the agency.

- He was skeptical at first because most scouts in the city usually had a different type of “modelling” in mind. He wasn’t that stupid. He’d been given business cards by the two scouts who came up to him and did some research on their agency. Fortunately they weren’t some shady agency using the word modelling as a cover up to do adult movies. That JAV typa shit.

- It didn’t take him long to make up his mind lol since he’s been dreaming of going on a trip somewhere foreign and new for ages. He just hoped that they’d keep their word for that.

- Model Aki! who shows up at the modeling agency a few days after the agency had reached out to him. He’d signed his signature on several documents agreeing to be a member of CSM Elite - the name of the modeling company.

- Model!Aki who gets his first photoshoot session for an avant garde line. There didn’t need to be much smiling from him which he was secretly thankful for because he really wasn’t one who smiled easily. (If only he knew how attractive it was) He’s a natural at this because the photographer didn’t have any problems with getting him to pose in many different angles. It seemed that he was photogenic to the point that he didn’t need to do much posing anyway. It only took them about two hours maximum instead of a whole day.

- It had been a few weeks since he first started his job and his schedule seemed to get busier and busier. He was grateful for it but there were days when he just wanted to go back to the once boring and relaxing routine he had before becoming a model.

- Model!Aki who gets fawned over by all of the stylists and hairdressers assigned to him. They always tell him how handsome he looked and how lucky someone would be if he were their boyfriend. He would overhear their conversations about how tall or how cool and dreamy he looked.

- Model!Aki who makes eye contact with the camera so intense that sometimes the photographer gets a little flustered with his gaze. It’s not intentional though, he’s just doing his job.

-Model!Aki who goes for smoke breaks in between his photoshoots to which one point it funnily enough became a topic in a magazine article and some of his fans had sent in unique and cool stuff like ashtrays and lighters for him to keep. He cherishes every single one of them.

- Model! Aki who’s very polite and professional when speaking to his peers and other staff members at the agency. But sometimes they wish he could show a little more emotion off camera. Most of his responses would make a few of them uncomfortable with how monotonous and brief they were. His amazing effort during photoshoots make up for that however.

-Model!Aki’s first runway was a bit nerve of a racking experience since he had to walk in front of a crowd of people. Which he needed time with getting used to. As he stepped onto the stage platform he tried his best not to squint at the spotlight or make any sort of unnecessary movements that would ruin his first walk. He remained calm and composed like he usually was and he killed it.

- His first appearance on the cover of a magazine on the other hand is what gets his popularity skyrocketing over night - a rising newbie in the industry. Those who were interested in fashion and kept up with the magazine itself began posting pictures of him, asking “just who exactly was he?”

- His socials had gained an instant mass of followers and eventually his pics had been posted across several websites, articles and fan accounts. It really shocked him!

-Model!Aki who then gets along with a few of the top models in the same agency as him. He’s met with Kishibe, Quanxi, Makima and Hirofumi at a celebration party held in one of Tokyo’s elite and exclusive clubs. There were other members from agency that had come but Aki only managed to get comfortable with Kishibe who had been modelling since he was 18 and Hirofumi, although quite relatively new to the agency but not so much compared to Aki, had been modelling since he was a child.

-Model!Aki who’s obviously popular with the ladies; some of them were women of money and status but unfortunately Aki wasn’t really interested in getting to know any of them.

- Model!Aki who ends up getting invited on a few talk shows. Whenever the interviewers ask a question he holds the same blank expression he usually does, giving a shorter response than expected. He reminds himself to (shyly) smile at the camera every now and then so he doesn’t look entirely mean and it turns the crowd in the studio into a screaming mess.

-Model!Aki who finally fulfilled one of his dreams to go to the beautiful country of Italy where he got to do a photoshoot for a luxury perfume brand along with one of the female models from CSM elite who was assigned to be his partner for the shoot.

-Model!Aki who returns back to his new, quiet apartment since the old one could no longer fit the art pieces and souvenirs he had gotten from his last work trip. He plops himself onto the soft velvety material of his black Quilton sofa with an exhausted but content sigh as he thinks back to his life before all this fame came.

- Somehow he feels as if there’s something else missing in his life. It wasn’t money, or traveling since he already had and did plenty of that. He couldn’t quite put a finger on it. He falls asleep as the thought remains lingering in his head.

Hello dear! That’s a really good question, and I’ve actually thought about the same thing. I always knew that ‘ulzzang’ is not commonly used among Koreans from what I’ve been told, it’s mostly used among foreigners, but I’m not sure about it being outdated. I talked to one of the people I’ve been posting (I will not say who it is, please don’t ask), and he personally doesn’t like being called an ‘ulzzang’ because once you obtain that title, that’s all you are. You don’t have a name, you’re not an actual person, you don’t get the basic respect or privacy any other person. You are simply a object, for other people’s visual pleasure, something people can do whatever they want with, an aesthetic not a real person. After hearing that, I wanted to shut this blog down completely but he asked me to keep it open and keep the title. Due to fact that people do those kinds of things, blogs that give credit to people are much appreciated. As for the tags, I am definitely not surprised people tag their selfies with tags that are commonly looked up. Tags get popular, people get desperate/thirsty. Social media fact. It’s not used very often since it was more at its peak in the early and mid 2000s. The context changed as well since most people who would be labeled as ulzzangs are already professional models (so people would just refer to them as a model instead). In January 2018, a surprising clothing item popped up on the South Korean fashion scene: boxy oversize T-shirts with the logo of Jesse Jackson’s 1988 US presidential campaign. As the weather got warmer, the shirt became a staple for trendy women across the country. Some of the shirts read “JESSE JACKSON ’88 — FOR PRESIDENT,” while others said “JESSE JACKSON ’88 — BLESS YOU.” There was even a misspelled “JESS JACKSON ’88” line of tank tops for men.

The shirt was popular with celebrities and college students alike: Rapper Moonbyul, for example, wore the shirt in the music video for her May release, “In My Room.” After the Jackson shirts’ initial appearance in South Korea, they quickly spread to stylish women across Asia, sold in cheap shopping markets and on e-tailers from provincial China to Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Is the popularity of this shirt a sign of a broader Korean interest in Jesse Jackson’s historic run for the Democratic nomination for president in 1988? No, says Seoul-based social media influencer and beauty blogger Han Yoo Ra: “I think it’s just about the design. People may be aware of the English but they don’t know the deeper meaning or that it’s meant to be political. The word ‘Jesse’ is just cute. It’s nothing more serious than that.”

To her point, retailers of the shirts don’t explain the context of Jackson’s campaign to prospective buyers. The Korean fashion site Yuiiyuii, for example, recommends the shirt for its “smart color scheme” and “sensuous lettering” in “harmonized colors” that can be “mixed and matched like a stylish model.” The retailer NSmall models the shirt along with alternatives such as one with the Chupa Chups lollipop logo.

In other words, the Jesse Jackson T-shirt is sold as fashion — not as a political statement. And nothing makes this point clearer than when the real-life Jesse Jackson visited South Korea in July of this year and there wasn’t any major dialogue in Korean media about how local youth were embracing his 1988 campaign.

The absurdity of a Jesse Jackson campaign T-shirt becoming a trendy item among people who don’t know Jesse Jackson, however, is useful as a way to examine how fashions arise among youth in Asia. With many pan-Asian trends in fashion, beauty, and music, South Korea sets the rhythm for the rest of the continent. Han and other Korean sources couldn’t locate the exact origin of the Jesse Jackson T-shirt, but its popularity follows a common pattern.

Han explains: “Korean trends mostly start in the country’s underground markets, where everything is on sale for about $10 and the quality isn’t so bad. Even foreign fast-fashion brands like Zara can be too expensive for Koreans, so teenage girls and 20-somethings tends to buy these cheaper underground brands.”

Hit items first go on sale in Seoul’s gargantuan Dongdaemun Market, where the products come from fly-by-night brands that pump out massive numbers of garments. The few that have names are called things like Ossazi, D2GARMENTORY, and Retno. Internet-savvy young women purchase items from the markets for resale on their Instagram accounts, modeling the pieces in the styling trends of the moment.

Once these images hit the internet, two things happen. First, local garment-makers can check to see what’s selling and then create their own slightly tweaked versions. If a Jesse Jackson T-shirt is selling well, another brand can, say, remove the “e” from Jesse to offer an ostensibly “different” product on the same theme.

Second, online images means allows the items to quickly go global. Chinese manufacturers scout Korean websites and social media accounts for hit trends and make their own versions. The Chinese and Korean manufacturers then distribute the shirts to malls and e-commerce sites across the continent.

And when Korean-manufactured items are sold outside of Korea, they are often sold as Korean trends. On Singapore’s Carousell, for example, the seller offers the Jesse Jackson shirt as a representative garment of the Korean Ulzzang look — a buzzword denoting the personal style of sharp-featured, pale-skinned Korean internet influencers. In accordance to the advice seen on sites like Fasheholic, the No. 1 way to be “Ulzzang” is to wear an oversize print T-shirt with English lettering.

This is a fundamentally different model from two decades ago, when Japan was the most important fashion market in Asia. Vintage T-shirts in Japan took on cachet from the importation process: These were “real things” from the United States, once worn by real Americans.

In the past, American political items found their way into Asian teen fashion mostly through Japan’s thousands of secondhand shops. These stores bulk-import vintage T-shirts from thrift stores and rag houses across the United States, and Japanese youth looking for unique items with English lettering can end up brandishing American political garments and accessories — such as Brock Adams and other obscure politicians’ campaign buttons and, in more jarring examples, “Rush is Right” baseball caps and pro-secessionist Confederate flag shirts.

The Jesse Jackson shirts in South Korea, however, are not an accident of bulk importation. They are all brand new garments, manufactured by a handful of local companies to be sold in Korea and the rest of Asia.

The current cachet for crisp, ersatz garments like Jesse Jackson T-shirts comes not from Americans but from the items’ association with trendy Korean women. With the popularity of Korean dramas, K-pop music, and Korean beauty brands across Asia, South Korea has taken the lead in soft power for the continent. And with Korean fashion being based around affordable casual clothing (that can be easily knocked off), less affluent Southeast Asians can easily import garments or buy a local version.

The question remains, however: Why specifically did a Jesse Jackson ’88 campaign T-shirt, of all things, get sucked into the Korea-driven Asian trend system? A few sources close to the Korean pop culture suggest that the number “88” may be the driver. 1988 is the birth year of the “King of K-pop,” G-Dragon of the group Big Bang, who often wears a 1988 Seoul Olympics hat. And one of the more popular Korean dramas of the past few years has been Reply 1988, a nostalgic romance set in the newly democratic South Korea of that year. Chinese consumers, on the other hand, may be drawn “88” because it’s considered the luckiest number.

But this kind of speculation misses the point: The Jesse Jackson ’88 “content” is the least important aspect of the shirt. In today’s globalized world, items can jump between cultures, but they mostly succeed in other places because they take on completely new meanings upon arrival.

The United States has long enjoyed an influence on the world’s pop culture and style, and Americans hardly bat an eye to see major American brands like Nike, Supreme, or Polo Ralph Lauren sold across the world. But they are often only popular because local trendsetters breath new life and meaning into the specific items. Consumers buy them because they’re legitimized by local influencers, not by country of origin. But when we don’t see that process, we Americans read the trends as more proof of our nation’s “soft power.”

This truth of globalization is easier to see in these absurd examples, when something incongruous takes off, such as an old campaign T-shirt from a failed primary run. In this particular example, the “Jesse Jackson ’88” part of the T-shirt may have its origin in the annals of American history, but the shirt caught on because of its exalted position within the Korean casual fashion system.

Jesse Jackson, or even America, has little to do with why Jesse Jackson ’88 campaign T-shirts are popular. Instead, it’s South Korea’s incredible cultural power that makes things cool in Asia — even American political nostalgia.

10 years ago while living in Tokyo, I thought that drinking was the national pastime of Japan. HA! How wrong I was. In Korea the mentality is: “Work hard, drink hard.” Say this to any Korean man and they will immediately begin laughing hysterically

Drinking In Korea Is A Team Sport

Unlike in most other countries, where going to the bar alone is not only common but a great way to meet singles, that is unheard of here in Korea. Drinking is always done in groups. Bars have tables instead of bar stools, and people always stick with their group while getting drunk, rather than mingling with strangers or people from another group and making new friends. If you are traveling Korea solo, this makes it very difficult to make new friends over alcohol — something which I do in every country I visit. (Yes, even the Muslim ones ssshhhhhh!)

Grocery stores have 3 soju sections: with the bottled water, with the imported wine, and in the meat/cheese section

This is not a 10L bottle of water — it is 30% alcohol soju, Korean rice wine (the national drink of Korea)

There are even special bars here that only serve alcohol if you also order food. Why? This is to keep customers from getting too drunk too fast. Drinking in South Korea is NOT a slow process — it is basically a race to see who can get the most drunk the fastest. Shots are poured and passed around like candy.

  There is even a Korean drinking ga– (well, it’s not much of a game….more of a challenge) known as “one shot”. No, it is not one single shot. It is an entire glass of soju (20-50% ABV rice wine) that is chugged in one single shot. Any foreigner that can pull this off will immediately win the respect of all the Koreans around him.

Oh Korea, what will you think of next?

  Cute is King in Korea

From the moment you step off the airplane, prepare to be surrounded by cute women and cute cartoon characters. Advertisements, clothing, food, games, household products, souvenirs, television shows and even warning signs all feature cute cartoon characters. Although the use of cartoon advertising is widespread in Asia, no country does it quite like South Korea.

Cute Korean Women Are Not Actually Cute…They Are Fake

Hate to ruin the dreams of all the men out there, but Korean women use extreme amounts of makeup to alter their appear so drastically that they become unrecognizable to their own families! They spend hours applying obscene amounts of makeup on a daily basis — including items such as double eyelids, nose thinners and products designed to shrink lips, enlarge eyes, and even shape their face into perfect V-shaped cartoon proportions. Videos of these phenomenal daily transformations are all over the internet and social media. (And you thought your girlfriend wears a lot of makeup, HA!)

  These women are completely unrecognizable after all of the makeup has been removed, so it should be no surprise that South Korea has the highest rate of beauty-enhancing procedures per capita. 1 in 5 Koreans has plastic surgery to enhance their features.

In South Korea being cute is mandatory — not just for cartoon characters and women but also for men.

Although not directly related to the high suicide rate, the need to look a certain way plays a big part in a Korean’s self-worth, especially if they feel they can’t reach society’s standards.

  Male Beauty Products

Because Korean men prefer cute over masculine 😂

A trip to a beauty store on my first day here revealed more male beauty products than I even knew existed. From nipple stickers designed to keep those pointy bastards from being visible underneath your shirt to crotch cleanser and hair removal products for every part of the male body, it would appear that the most attractive Korean men are also the most feminine. Their logic is that if the women take time to be as beautiful as possible, so should they.

Even ordinary household products such as sponges, clocks, pillows, fans and kitchen appliances need to be cute! Spend a few minutes shopping around any city in Korea and you will begin to understand. Just take a look at some of these products I discovered my first weekend in Korea:

  Korean Money

Korean currency is the won and it is pronounced “wan” — like wand without the ‘d’ not like won. Notes come in 50,000, 10,000, 5,000 and 1,000 denominations and coins come in 500, 100, and 50. 1,000 won is worth a little under $1 USD, about the same price as a bottled water. Simple convenience store snacks range from 3,000-5,000 and a basic meal for one person can range from 8,000 to 20,000+ won.

  Size Does Matter

It’s no secret. Everything in Asia is smaller. From beds and bathtubs to clothing, countertops, ceilings and yes, even condoms, being tall is a huge disadvantage in Southeast Asia.

Despite calling various Asian nations home over the last decade, I still manage to hit my head on a daily basis. Finding clothing that fits is a difficult task and finding shoes or sandals in my size is literally impossible. Even mirrors are hung so low that the reflection is of my chest, rather than my face. This is something that we vertically-gifted people will never be able to get used to, no matter how many years spent in Asia.

Bathtubs here are also incredibly small. Despite staying at one of the top-rated hotels in the city, my foot is nearly as wide as the bathtub. Even the shower head is located at eye-level — and in my attempts to raise it, I accidentally broke the shower. (oops!)
