"Pale Sentinels" has always been a riff off Pale Reavers and makes me feel like "Lala didn't put much thought into it did he" which INITIALLY he might not have, and he might have pitched the name. But Lychen would have hit him and shut him down and said no name it something else.

"Pale" especially evokes that this is an organization of Dreamers which is NOT the case. If ANYTHING they lean more towards Soundless and/or a neutral stance which considers all sides, so I wanted to give them a name that demonstrates this rather than like. Essentially being named "GUARDIANS OF THE DREAM" whilst claiming to be otherwise.

I wanted to name them something bird related initially anyway. Lala loves birds and sees them as a message of freedom and hope. I think the first name I wanted to go with off the bat was Pale Kestrels and then I was like AUGH NO THE KESTRELS IN CANTHA GOT THAT ONE ALREADY AUGH. (Unrelated note but Lacrimosen is why Eldulis "doesn't like" birds--they remind him of Lala.)

So in researching (yes) the renaming of the Sentinels, I narrowed it into two qualities: color and noun. I wanted the sylvari who are in the group to be able to be called by the group name (i.e. in the same way you could say "this ones a courtier, a dreamer, a soundless, a warden, a soldier," etc etc.) So I didn't want to name them something like GOLDEN FUTURE where the members of the organization are then called something fully unrelated.

So RIGHT NOW with all that borne in mind. I am renaming the Pale Sentinels to the Roseate Canaries NOBODY MOVE THERE'S MORE:

Roseate means that something is rose-colored OR that it's optimistic and idealistic-- much like Lacrimosen's desire to fully unite sylvari-kind. His desires and goals may be a bit too rose-tinted to some, but he is hopeful for his race's future.

Canaries as a representation of hope as well. Plus a cheerful, playful bird with a beautiful song.

The organization name is often shortened to Canaries (i.e. unless there's reason to drop the full name, diplomatic meeting or something, no one's really prancing out the Roseate part of it. They all know it's Pink Bird they don't need to specify it every time.)

With that said, I think there are ranks among the Canaries (idk what they're called yet.... I wanna make it something cute and probably birdie themed. and give them some kind of highrank-lowrank buddy system for growth and bond forming within the organization.)

IN ADDITION: I think though they started off primarily as snipers (Lacrimosen did still steal half the Pale Reavers infantry and their armory (Laranthir was a good sport about it thank you mister of the wild) and Lala did repay him later,) they've branched out somewhat. They've got other stuff going on there. I think the Canaries focus not only on armed combat and stealth missions, but also on education and knowledge. They want to have a full, well-rounded view of the world and an understanding of where they stand in it-- these are sylvari after all! (In some funny way the Canaries are almost a miniature, all-sylvari Pact, where every member is expected to learn to work as a member of all three orders.)

I'm also rescinding the previous statement that Lacrimosen doesn't care about other races' politics and strifes. He has to. The Canaries have to take a stance on world issues, they have to be involved in things that come up geopolitically. Considering the time period of their formation (between the end of HoT and beginning of LWS3) I'd say that the Canaries have been present and involved in at the very least: refugee aid in Elona, the advance on Kralk, assault at Thunderhead Keep, and Dragonfall, the advance on Gandara the Moon Fortress (WHERE'D THEY GET VINE WALL SHAPERS HUH? HUH?) Drizzlewood Coast up through Champions, the battle against Soo Won, etc. Currently during SotO they're kept busy keeping up with rifts as well, keeping not just their area safe, but also rural areas with fewer protections from their own military forces.

okay here’s a weird origin story. her original design had bi-colored eyes (one blue, one pink). she ended up as a twin because someone else used the same design, so we decided each twin should have one of the two colors. (franky ended up with pink eyes). franky lost one eye and her twin was dropped and retconned. i’ve been considering making it part of her arc that she doesn’t remember what color her other eye was

actually she was never originally planned to lose an eye! when i first got her i knew the world would be Rough, but the eye plot was spur the of moment. someone else set up a plot and i basically went “what if franky showed up and, idk, lost an eye?”. the rest is history

there’s a potential au where franky stuck around (aka i didn’t go on hiatus for like a year) when her girlfriend became queen. that version of franky could have been a beta or bodyguard or something and have ended up very different. 

while i’ve thought about trying to plot to have franky have kids, i am not entirely certain she would. she still has a lot of conflicted feelings about her mother, and she’d struggle with the idea of being a mother

franky is strictly a lesbian, which is pretty unusual because i usually make my characters bi/pan/vaguely bi because i’m too lazy to define it. but franky is explicitly homosexual.

valorousimperial Mmmm... That's hard. Fantasy was all I had when I was growing up, so I know a lot of things. I think that probably my favorite stories were the ones that didn't have lessons - they were just full of people doing what they wanted So, ancient mythology really caught my eye. It made the gods seem troll-like, and they just did what they wanted.
