Oh my God I’m so angry. I just read the absolute WORT take on the physical appearances of the “bad” characters in Arcane. They complained that the “bad” characters were always depicted in worse lighting and as ugly, whereas the “good” characters were depicted as more flattering.

Like, oh my God. Tell me you don’t understand story analysis without telling me you don’t understand story analysis.

This is a common trope in ANY storytelling medium. It’s called “the mark of greatness.” It is a physical disability or mark on the body that sets a character apart. Oedipus’ feet are deformed because his parents tried to kill him. Harry’s lightning bolt scar, Luke Skywalker’s hand, etc., are all pivotal to furthering the plot and are important for fully nuanced characters and storytelling.

Let’s use Sevika since we know the most about her. She, like most of the characters in the show, is morally complex. When she feels like Vander’s choices lead to inaction and continued oppression she joins Silco. In the process two VERY important things happen to her character because one thing happens. And that is the loss of her arm. 1) by losing her arm she is baptized into Silco’s service. Losing something important, like let’s say an ARM, cause the person to change which is why it’s a baptism. 2) She literally sacrificed her arm to become Silco’s arm. Everything she does, she does in the name of Silco. This is HER mark of greatness. The physical absence of an appendage symbolizes, and I’m going to be redundant here, her loyalty to Silco and how she is the brawn of his operation.

Now. Let’s talk about Silco. Silco is missing/has limited use of his left eye. It’s a mark of greatness again, but IT IS SO MUCH MORE SINCE IT’S AN EYE. EYES ARE INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT IN STORYTELLING! The fact that it’s only one eye means his vision/focus is singular. He cares about his operation, about having Zaun become its own city, but NOTHING is more important to him than Jinx. Almost every time we see him in a scene, Jinx is brought up and often defended by him. Jinx is his damaged eye. She’s the only one he has a (literal) blind spot for.

The Chem Barons are more complex since we don’t know them like other characters. But speaking of them as a group, and still along the lines of “the mark of greatness,” their appearance is absolutely A+ storytelling. Their appearances signify their power, fear, and corruption. It’s all about unchecked power and technological and chemical experimentation. They warn of the consequences of aligning one’s humanity with destructive power.

Amara is a little different. While she is not deformed per se, she is older with wrinkles and has a forehead adornment. Again, like the Chem Barons, this reflects wisdom since it is on her forehead and power. Power as a trade union member, and the foreshadowing of her possession by the Black Rose. EVERYTHING IS DONE ON PURPOSE!

Don't come at me with some surface-level bad take like "I'm tired of 'bad guys' looking ugly." It is SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT!

⇒ After The Round... Luka waited for you in his asigned room, it was normal for you two to meet after the rounds since it bringed hype to the aliens that the "Ruler of the stage" and the possibly new ruler spended time together. Obviously, that bringed a lot of money to your guardians, so its a little treat of them for you two! You entered Luka's room tiredly and he standed up when he felt your presence in the door, walking closer to you. His usual calm and blunt expression bored into you while you wondered what he was thinking about since he usually waits for you to get to his side He grabbed your hand, making your breath hitch as you tensed up, only to be caught off guard when he suddenly decided to bite one of your fingers. You raised an eyebrow in confusion but let out a small laugh, feeling your mood lift slightly. 'Eeeh? Luka, are you perhaps hungry...?' you asked softly, mindful of your voice after such an intense performance Luka taked your finger out of his mouth before looking directly at you, continuing to grab your hand he decided to give you a quick response- "mhm...maybe, can i be hungry of you too?" - He asked like it was a normal question, even if it flustered you a little he didnt seem to care since he meant it in a literal way Sitting on the couch with him, he placed his head on your lap, still holding your hand tightly as he guided it to rest on his head, closing his eyes calmly. Wait a second—werent you the one who won the round? So why is he the one getting the pats?? You sighed in defeat, knowing there was no way to win an argument like that against Luka. He knew all too well that you’d end up spoiling him anyway "Stay like that for now...and move your hand, i let you."

Seriously, why does my sister, Sophie, think she's Toby's favourite (Toby is our dog)?? For starters, she never feeds him and rarely goes out on walks with him. She doesn't really want to play with him when he is feeling energetic and acts like he is being aggressive and naughty. She always sends him to his crate whenever she decides he's being even remotely annoying. She has an annoying, screechy, high-pitched, loud voice that he doesn't like.

And the more prominent issue: she doesn't respect Toby's boundaries whatsoever. She literally SITS ON HIS HEAD. She pushes and drags him around like he's a doll, not a living animal. She ignores his behaviour when he is clearly trying to get her to stop (growling, snapping, trying to move away, that sort of thing). I will be hugging Toby on the sofa (not facing his head because I know he doesn't like that) and she will sit on his paws and drag his head onto her lap and stroke him in all the wrong places.

Honestly, how can she be so horrible to Toby?

And it's not just Toby; I have two rabbits (Snuggles and Peter). I got Snuggles for my birthday and she got Peter because my parents didn't want Snuggles to be lonely. I'm still annoyed/hurt that I got Snuggles for my birthday but she just got Peter. I missed out on a lot of presents because I got Snuggles, but on her birthday only a month earlier, she got plenty of presents, as well as a rabbit, pretty much.

Sophie only cares about the rabbits when she's showing them off to guests. She gets angry whenever she has to feed them or clean out their living space. She doesn't understand that they are a living responsibility. She can't even feed them properly. And whenever I cuddle Peter, she gets mad at me for cuddling "her rabbit" despite cuddling Snuggles herself.

I HATE HER SO MUCH

She's an awful sister and this isn't even the worst part about her, but I just feel fucking furious that she treats our animals like this. We have had Toby for 5 years and the rabbits for 6, its not like they're something she's not used to.

I wouldn't say that jayce hates people from the undercity at all, but I also wouldn't deny him being discrimatory against them.

Jayce definitely has an underlying predijuice against people from the undercity that he is shown to kinda unlearn through season 1 (similar to caitlyn in season 1).

The show begins with him and caitlyn's speech talking about how jayce went down to the undercity, aka Benzo's, to get supplies, and he doesn't deny the fact that the undercity is dangerous rather he simply says that the risk is worth the gains. Now, if we look deeper into it, this could be him falling into the harmful stereotypes associated with the undercity.

I think what's also interesting is that at this current time there wasn't particularly high levels of conflict in the undercity since vander was still around and making a deal with grayson so the level of tension and conflict wasn't as bad as what it becomes at the end of season 1 and the people don't know about silco, yet there is that belief that the undercity is dangerous.

Now, jayce's and viktor's partnership heavily implies that a huge goal they had was to help the people, help the undercity, and make progress for piltover. You see it when jayce becomes a Councillor, and viktor stresses the urgency he has to get their plans up and running.

Helping the undercity and helping those in need is a pledge that THEY BOTH made. This is the literal text, and they both want to help people. I am pretty sure that jayce probably went through a very similar arc to caitlyn learning more about the undercity through viktor and essentially connecting to the undercity as a labourer in piltover.

You see it with the tools they make, the way they want hextech to be accessible to everyone. However, there are major critiques and flaws in their designs and ideas. Sure, in a perfect and flawless system, making the hexclaw for artisans and making the gloves for the miners in the fissures would realistically heavily benefit the undercity economically and socially as they're would be less strain on their bodies and therefore the equipment can guarantee an increase in productivity and less health issues appearing as the people get older. However, that's the problem, the system is flawed and we see both jayce and viktor try and work in a flawed system, trying to mend the system or add something good just for them to be swallowed by the corruption and become a huge factor into why its so bad in the first place.

When jayce becomes a Councillor, this is when we see a huge change in his views and how he starts to view the people of the undercity. The constant threats that silco poses put him on a constant high alert, and we see quickly how that starts to radically change his views concerning the people of the undercity and zaun. Again, you see this best with his interactions with mel and viktor on which, on separate occasions, he ends up making very questionable comments about the undercity.

Surprisingly, both of these happen in the same episode, and it essentially depicts jayce at his worst. These are probably the most direct and discriminatory comments that we have seen come from jayce about the undercity. The rising tension and threats that he is constantly seeing start to really blur and corrupt his previous beliefs as he starts to essentially alienate the people of the undercity and demonise them.

I think it's really interesting how the moment viktor does call him out on it, jayce seems to essentially recognise his mistake and immedit apologise. This kind of leads me to believe that a huge character flaw that jayce has is his struggle to see two things true at the same time. He is been surrounded by threats that he believes are because of people from the undercity so he starts to develop a very negative image and thought process about them but when he is confronted by his partner or vi or even renni's child he slowly starts to develop that dual view that he needs to see. Yes, people can be dangerous, but they can also be good. You see that your own partner and the people you claim to care for are also from the undercity.

Jayce's arc and his changing views of the people from the undercity heavily start to change to a much more nuanced view when he starts to go back to his roots as both a scientist and a labourer.

You see this mainly during his final speech in season 1 and when he chooses to broker a peace deal with silco. I think it's really important to point out that from that moment onwards, jayce always addresses the people of the undercity as a completely separate entity to the people of piltover. Again this is a great call back to him realising that he has failed those people and that he is not in any way shape or form able to truly govern them, to be their voice or their symbol. Jayce realises that he cannot represent the people of the undercity and essentially season 1 works on him realising that and season 2 was supposed to be him further learning and getting closer and becoming a symbol of progress for both cities, essentially setting them apart but starting to build healthy connections (jinx and jayce should of interacted. We should have seen two symbols of two cities interact, I am pissed)

Jayce acknowledges the undercity as independent the moment he interacts with silco, and he does describe viktor as a "zaunite," which is a heavily politically charged term in his statement and heavily contrast viktor whom describes zaun as just the "undercity".

His final speech really drives his season 1 character growth home and ends up paralleling viktor's own speech of "in the pursuit of great, we failed to do good." This is a full circle moment for jayce as he acknowledges and currently believes that this would be his last act as Councillor before he steps down as he literally says that his time in the council is limited (could also be a really interesting parallel to viktors time living being limited)

In the end, season 2 dropped his arc so bad it pisses me off. The fact that no one questioned what happened to the veto head of the council is astounding to me and that he didn't even get much time with other characters.

I don't know why people think Jayce hates zaun, he LITERALLY used to go to Benzo's all the time to buy shit for his illegal experiments. He said one shitty comment and everyone jumped him like PLEASE free my man it is not that deep
