I acknowledge that I have fallen behind, but hey, at least I'm still trying to catch up? 😅 I also acknowledge that these all started short, and yet have slowly gotten longer. What can I say? I'm a wordy bitch.
Find the prompt list HERE.

DAY 11 Prompt: Beelzebub Ever wonder what's up with Beel's human world tattoo?
It happened the first week into devil-sitting in the human world. You were sitting at the kitchen island –a counter far fancier than you could ever afford– watching Satan attempt to use a food processor to crush graham crackers. You were looking forward to tasting his take on an apple crumble from your world. You had offered to supply him with a recipe, but after some slight consideration, he had opted to adjust his own recipe to the available ingredients.
You wanted to trust him. He was far from an inexperienced cook.
But, you also really wanted a good pie.
So, there you were, Satan hissing unintelligibly under his breath, when Beel walked in with a shopping bag bouncing against his calf. Typically, that wouldn’t be anything bizarre. This was his temporary home too, after all. You expected him to rub his growling stomach, shoot that dazzling smile your way, and then attempt to steal a bite of the apples Satan was chopping at a frankly terrifying speed.
However, when he shrugged off his rain-spotted windbreaker, you noticed something different, something new. A large gauze wrap cloaked the majority of Beel’s right bicep, stretching from elbow to shoulder.
Satan’s knife stilled as Beel slid onto the free stool at your side. Emerald eyes wide in alarm, Satan asked, “What happened to your arm?
“Hm?” Beel was already snacking on a stray apple. He had the audacity to survey his left forearm, brow creasing in genuine confusion. “Nothing?”
“Don’t play dumb,” Satan pointed the tip of the knife towards his brother, and though you knew he was simply waving the object because it was already in his hand, you really wished he wouldn’t brandish something so sharp so casually. “You’re all bandaged up.”
Before Beel could answer, Belphie was padding into the kitchen, Lucifer trailing behind him. Satan spun on his heel towards the sound, the knife switching targets to the brother that Satan was most likely to stab. The curious spark in Belphie’s sleep-dazed eyes, partnered with his absent itching of his right bicep, was clearly what had corralled Lucifer into checking on the twins.
“I had the weirdest dream,” Belphie yawned, wandering over to take a seat next to Beel. “I was sleeping–”
“Sleep-ception,” Satan murmured, catching your eye when you snickered. You had caught him pouring through critically acclaimed human world movies of the last decade in the theater room at various times over the week.
“Let him finish,” Lucifer gestured for Belphie to continue, his dark eyes fixed on Beel’s bandage with an unreadable stare.
“I was asleep, but there was this loud buzzing noise,” Belphie cradled his cheek in his palm, his lashes fluttering dangerously low. “The longer it went on, the hungrier I felt. Then, I was full and I woke up.”
You had to bite your tongue to stop yourself from critiquing Belphie’s story-telling capabilities. Talk about anti-climatic. However, his words did resonate with Beel, comprehension finally dawning in a small, “Oh.”
Though you waited for him to elaborate, Lucifer beat you to the punch, his gaze narrowing as he deduced, “You got a tattoo.”
Satan dropped the knife. “You did?!”
Beel blinked, meeting both of their stares before scanning the kitchen island for any other ingredients Satan required less of. “Yeah.”
You felt the rage radiate from Lucifer, felt it smother the room and dampen Beel’s energy instantly. Everything went dark. Lucifer’s eyes, Belphie’s groan, Satan’s brown sugar burning in a pan on the stovetop. It was as if a solar eclipse had occurred just outside the kitchen window.
“Beelzebub,” Lucifer’s voice boomed with authority, “How could you do something so foolish?”
It was strange to see Beel curl in on himself. Big, tall Beel. Gentle giant Beel. He was always looming over everyone, untouchable, and yet there he was, cowering as his shoulders leapt to his ears.
“Letting a human mark your skin? Allowing a human close enough to touch you, to attempt to pierce your flesh?” Lucifer hissed. You could tell he was holding back his wings from bursting out from under his jacket. It wasn’t until he continued that you then understood what he was getting at. “Did you think they wouldn’t notice? Human needles are no match for demon skin. You know that.”
Oh. It wasn’t a humans are inferior thing (you had been only mildly offended mere seconds earlier), but a we are undercover thing. Belphie and Satan, who had both decided that the marbling in the counter was simply mesmerizing, stiffened, awaiting Beel’s response.
“I do,” Beel resigned, “I asked Solomon to cast a spell that would soften my skin beforehand. The artist didn’t notice anything different about me.”
Lucifer’s dominating aura eased ever so slightly. You held your breath as he stood there, in the doorway of the kitchen, clenching and unclenching his fists. When he finally pinched the bridge of his nose, let out a heavy exhale typically reserved for Mammon and Mammon alone, you sighed in solidarity. Satan and Belphie followed your lead.
“It was a reckless thing to do,” Lucifer crossed his arms, fixed Beel with a stern glare. “A terrible risk. You could have exposed all of us. You could have posed a threat to Diavolo’s relationship with the human world!”
“I’m sorry, Lucifer.” Beel ducked his head, and you couldn’t help but notice the way he placed his hands palm-up on the counter, a symbol of surrender. “I didn’t mean to put the family in danger of being discovered.”
When his violet eyes returned from their favorite speck of graham cracker to the right of the food processor, he added, “I’ve been thinking about how our demon markings are similar to a tattoo, right? But we didn’t have any say in them.”
Belphie’s fingers flew to his right collarbone. Lucifer glanced upwards for a moment, eyes crossing slightly to Satan’s amusement, an unconscious nod to the diamond that was currently invisible upon his brow.
Beel himself rolled his shoulders and explained, “I thought it would be nice to have a mark on my skin that I could choose. A tattoo that could represent something important to me.”
That hit Lucifer directly in the heart, appealed to the sentimentality he liked to hold close to his chest. Satan regarded Beel with searing intrigue, Belphie smiling softly as he relaxed against the counter.
The argument was dropped, and Beel nudged Belphie awake, excitedly explaining that the shopping bag at his feet contained a snack Beel had picked out specially for his twin. They ran off before anyone could question further, leaving a heavy tension in the room that you had come to expect when Lucifer and Satan had to fabricate conversation.
“Hey Lucifer,” You threw out into the uncomfortable air, “You like apple pie a lot too, don’t you?”
And then you ran.
The question of Beel’s tattoo was forgotten for the most part. He didn’t often bare his arms in the Devildom, his penchant for sweaters and jackets rendering the memory of the argument irrelevant 90% of the time. Still, you thought about it on occasion. When the bandage came off and the ink was revealed to be a seemingly random arrangement of swoops, you took it upon yourself to discover the meaning behind the body art.
Was it some warped amalgamation of their sin sigils? Did it represent Lilith? Did the two arching lines have something to do with twins? It kept you up at night. Not often, but sometimes. Enough that you asked him about it more than once.
He only ever shot you a sunny smile in response.
It wasn’t until a year later, when Beel had contacted you while on an assignment from Diavolo in the human world, that the truth came out.
Beel was accompanying you grocery shopping before you would cook dinner at your tiny apartment for the two of you when he paused. “Can we stop here?”
You glanced over your shoulder to see Beel drooling at the sign for a sushi restaurant. Big surprise. Stepping off the main path before a clueless pedestrian ran into your hulking companion, you peered at the notice in the door that had caught his eye.
“Oh, they’re running the Shooting Dragon Meteor contest again,” Beel commented as your jaw went slack.
Hold on.
You jabbed your index finger at the top left of the promotional flyer. “That logo looks like your tattoo!”
And despite your shock, he simply nodded, all smiles. “The restaurant partnered with a tattoo parlor nearby. If you get a tattoo of the logo, you get free Shooting Dragon Meteor rolls for life.”
The reality hit you like a freight train, those sleepless nights rearing their ugly heads with a vengeance. Your mouth flapped like a fish out of water, your tongue failing to wrap around vowels. Your mind was moving too fast to properly formulate a sentence.
Beel was already muttering about what order he was going to place when you exploded, “You told Lucifer it represented something important to you!”
Though, a small, exasperated part of you asked, why are you surprised?
“It does.” Beel frowned, confusion creasing his brow. “Shooting Dragon Meteor rolls use a very rare, high-quality tuna that can only be fished in this area once a year. I wanted Belphie to try them, since sushi is his favorite.”
Oh, and if the whiplash wasn’t a little hard to process, then neither was Solomon’s cooking. Of course, that was just Beel in a way, wasn’t it? Of course such a shallow gesture had a deeper meaning. Of course the tattoo still led back to family.
Of course Beel would tattoo a restaurant logo on his skin to give his brother free sushi once a year.
And Beel’s enthusiasm had you wondering why you doubted him for even a second. As he exited the restaurant, a veritable feast of sushi rolls stuffed into six plastic bags, he beamed, “I’m gonna visit you at this time every year, okay?”

Clearly trying to capitalize on the Willy Wonka craze (the movie had come out a year earlier), General Mills introduced "Mr. Wonderfull's Surprize" cereal in late 1972 in the test market of Buffalo, New York. It came in chocolate and vanilla flavors and boasted that it was the "only cereal with a creamy filling!" which featured corn puffs filled with, basically, frosting.
While it was a big hit with kids, it horrified parents, nutritionists and others who found it to be over the top with its sugar content, and the following article appeared in the New York Times in September 1973:
WASHINGTON, Sept. 14 (UPI) —A group of nutritionists and consumer organizations criticized today a new cereal being test‐marketed by General Mills.
The critics called the cereal a sugar‐filled “junk food,” and urged the company to scrap it.
The product, called Mr. Wonderful's Surprise, is being sold so far only in Buffalo. It consists of about 30 per cent sugar and 14 per cent saturated fat, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a privately financed consumer group that hopes to get the product dropped before it gets out of Buffalo.
The cereal consists of hollow “puffs” with cream‐filled centers.
A General Mills spokesman, Graham Molitor, said, the attack was a case of “chasing ghosts with sledge hammers.”
Graham Molitor's colorful analogy aside, the popularity of the cereal simply meant the national launch would go forward; the cereal was available from coast to coast the following year. In apparent attempts to win over moms, the promo and marketing people at General Mills went to great lengths to portray the sugar bomb of a cereal as somehow nutritious or healthy, which was laughable and probably only made the controversy worse.
After continued protests, the company finally threw in the towel and pulled Mr Wonderfull from store shelves sometime in 1975.

every edsheeran book ive ever read and what i thought
*reblog without tags please
update #1: i just finished reading Letting An@ Go by anonymous. the teenage drama and romance is gross and annoying. the protagonist has a lot of strong opinions about peoples weight, especially her mother’s, which is very triggering. plenty of m3an $pO if that’s your thing. rampant fatphobia. i give it 3 out of 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
5 star tier ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
• hunger: a memoir of (my) body by roxane gay. one of the best edsheeran books ive read. it’s about sa, food addiction, boolimia, feminism, fatphobia, the struggles of just trying to exist black woman in a large body. would recommend
• i’m glad my mom died by jennette mccurdy. it’s so good. i think i finished it in a day. it’s about a lot more than edsheeran. highly recommend. go read it right now
• unbearable lightness: a story of loss and gain by portia de rossi. a gay actor’s struggles with edsheeran. one of the few i’ve read more than once. would recommend
• wasted: a memoir of an0rex!a and boolimia by marya hornbacher. really deserves to be in a class of its own. it’s the best written edsheeran book out there. it’s sad, hilarious, intelligent, perfectly captures the internal voice of mania. highly tr!ggering, so proceed with caution. after wasted was published she relapsed, which she speaks about in madness: a bipolar life. it’s also a very good book but edsheeran is not the focus
4 star tier ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
• insatiable: a young mother’s struggle with an0rexia by erica rivera. if you wanna read about someone who takes fistfuls of bisacodyl and exercises intensely, you might like this book. it’s very good. would recommend
• dying to be th!n by nikki grahame. imagine being so severely malnourished as a child that you never go through puberty. thats how serious her illness was. she basically grew up in treatment facilities, managed to recover against all odds, went on big brother (the reality show), published a book, relapsed, and tragically passed away in 2021. the covid lockdowns were hard on her mental health. would recommend
• the girls at 17 swann street by yara zgheib. semi-autobiographical work of fiction. what sets this one apart is the protagonist isn’t a teenage girl. she’s, like, 28 i think? something like that. would definitely recommend if you get tired of reading about teens and preteens all the time
• elena vanishing by elena dunkle. at a certain point, all these books can be summarized in one sentence: she had to choose between recovery or death. it’s a very good memoir. would recommend
• born round: the secret history of a full-time eater by frank bruni. we love to see male representation in the edsheeran community. he was a chubby kid, turned to unhealthy means to achieve we!ght loss, eventually learns to heal his relationship with food and becomes restaurant critic for the new york times (ever heard of it?). would recommend
• sure, i’ll join your cult: a memoir of mental illness and the quest to belong anywhere by maria bamford. if you don’t know who maria bamford is, she’s one of the best stand up comics, period. that’s not even my opinion, it’s just an agreed upon fact within the stand up community. she’s brilliant. the book is about her mental illnesses and all the different self help groups she joins (so many!). she does go into her struggle with exercise boolimia, though that’s not the primary subject. it gets 5 stars as a book, but 4 stars as an edsheeran book because there just isn’t a lot of dis0rder talk
3 star and below ⭐️⭐️⭐️
• stick figure: a diary of my former self by lori gottlieb. good but i had trouble relating to the protagonist because was quite young and immature
• the art of st4rving by sam j. miller. some much needed male representation in edsheeran literature. and some lgbtq representation. it’s YA (young adult) fiction, not really my taste. would recommend for those who like YA. great cover art!
• wintergirls by laurie halse anderson. a lot of people love this book. i thought it was ok. it’s a work of fiction by an author who isn’t really part of the edsheeran or recovery community. it’s another YA book. i will always prefer memoirs and non-fiction
• fat chance by lesléa newman. this was the first edsheeran book i read. it was assigned reading for my high school health class. it’s a YA novel about a 13 year old girl who wants to lose we!ght. she re$tricts, she b;nges, she poorges, she becomes boolimic. i can trace my edsheeran back to this book. i started d;eting, b;ngeing, and abusing lax4tives as a direct result of reading this material. it did the exact opposite of its purpose, trying to steer young people away from toxic d!et culture. my take away was, i’m overweight, therefore i should be willing to do anything to get th!nner. it’s not very good tbh. maybe if you like YA you’d like it but otherwise, would not recommend

CW: discussions of child neglect, food policing, abusing autistic children, fatshaming
I’ve always been confused why I have food insecurity trauma behaviors, but my family has always had the privilege of having enough food and money and whatever else. I was reflecting on this with one of my partners this morning, and realized that my parents had a lot of rules around eating that other people… didn’t? So I wanted to share some of them and… idk. I just don’t want to feel alone. Also, understanding that I am (undiagnosed as a child) autistic with sensory issues that sometimes explode into ARFID, is vital to this conversation and adds a whole other layer. Again, CW ahead.
We always had ingredients, not pre-prepared meals. And you couldn’t eat things bc they were an ingredient
Things like cheese you could snack on but you could only have a little. If you’re hungry, eat a fruit or a vegetable (notoriously some of the worst things for textural sensory issues.)
Pre-packaged snacks have a purpose- if we’re leaving the house, or if you want to take one to school. You may have one snack after school, but there’s a specific amount you’re allowed to have, and it cannot be pre-packaged. I was banned from goldfish for a period of years bc I kept ignoring the rule with it. (I was unwittingly self-medicating for POTS, because it was the saltiest thing I was allowed. The diagnosis came years later.)
Sugar was evil. I could have it several times a week, but only as dessert. I had no say in what dessert was or when. If I asked for it, the answer would automatically be no. Breakfast cereal, one of my only safe foods that I could count on, was not allowed to contain more than 8-9 grams of sugar. That ruled out things like fruity pebbles, my favorite cereal. Occasionally this rule would be broken for things like Golden Grahams, because my dad liked them, but not for anything else unless it was a special occasion.
If you miss your time slot during the day, you just don’t get that thing: i.e. snack time is from 3-4pm. If you don’t eat then, you can’t eat until dinner at 6. No food after dinner. No food between 8am and noon. No food between 1 and 3. This schedule was only allowed to deviate if mom deviated from it.
Also, if you don’t like what’s been prepared for a meal, too bad. Eat it or eat nothing.
In a similar vein, if you don’t eat all of your lunch at school, the leftovers are now your snack after school the next day so mom can watch you eat it. It was supposed to teach me to eat all my food at school. Instead I just learned to throw food away.
Foods other kids got a lot, we didn’t really. They were only for car trips or birthdays, so a few times a year. Things like chips, soda, cracker jacks, etc.
Since safe foods were policed so heavily, I learned to eat a shit ton when I could, so I could make it through potentially not eating anything else substantial until the next day, or even several days. This was usually breakfast cereal, which was guaranteed, and snack time food, which was usually something like popcorn or peanut butter celery (which I did like) or pretzels or yogurt. Hated trail mix and granola bars with a passion. This got me consistently criticized for “eating like a pig” or “wasting food” or “eating up money” when I would have 2 bowls of cereal for breakfast, especially in middle school and high school. But if I wasn’t really eating anything else during the day, and I ran out of energy from those 2 bowls by 10am, what else was I supposed to do but take it?
There was also a lot of competition for getting ahold of my safe foods when they were in the house- because I have 3 siblings. So I grew a habit of stealing and hoarding food in my room- even though that was strictly forbidden. I got busted often, but I was fucked otherwise. Or when we had things like pizza for dinner or other safe foods, I’d have several helpings (consequently getting fatshamed) because I wouldn’t know when I’d have a pleasant sensory experience again, or when I’d get to really eat again.
Also, had to clean my plate whenever I complained about dinner. Think I got bungee corded to the chair once. Had to sit at the dinner table past my bedtime a few times because the lasagna or avocado was too much and I’d puke. And then get verbally abused for it. They stopped that with my siblings. They were allowed to have pb&j after eating 3 bites, but only pb&j. What I would have given for that when I was a kid.
Anyway. Any solidarity is unfortunate but appreciated. A bit sobering now that it’s all listed out like that.

Article by: noel kirkpatrick (September 5 2018)
Call it Apocalypse 2040.
In the early 1970s, a computer program called World1 predicted that civilization would likely collapse by 2040. Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) had programmed it to consider a model of sustainability for the world.
The prediction has resurfaced because Australian broadcaster ABC recirculated a 1973 newscast about the computer program. The program's findings, however, never really went away, as its results have been re-evaluated over the nearly 50 years since they first appeared.
The bad news for us is that the model seems to be spot-on so far.
The computer model was commissioned by the Club of Rome, a group of scientists, industrialists and government officials focused on solving the world's problems. The organization wanted to know how well the world could sustain its rate of growth based on information that was available at the time. World1 was developed by Jay Forrester, the father of system dynamics, a methodology for understanding how complex systems operate.
When deciding the fate of civilization, the program considered several variables, including pollution levels, population growth, the availability of natural resources and global quality of life. These factors were considered in tandem with one another as opposed to separately, following the Club of Rome's perspective that the world's problems are interconnected.
Such an approach was novel in the 1970s, even if the forecast World1 produced wasn't intended to be "precise." The program produced graphs that demonstrated what would happen to those metrics in the future, without even accounting for things like climate change. The graphs all indicated a downward trajectory for the planet.
According to the 1973 ABC segment, World1 identified 2020 as a tipping point for civilization.
"At around 2020, the condition of the planet becomes highly critical. If we do nothing about it, the quality of life goes down to zero. Pollution becomes so seriously it will start to kill people, which in turn will cause the population to diminish, lower than it was in the 1900. At this stage, around 2040 to 2050, civilized life as we know it on this planet will cease to exist."
This was not the end of the model. In 1972, the Club of Rome published "The Limits to Growth," a book that built off the work of World1 with a program called World3, developed by scientists Donella and Dennis Meadows and a team of researchers. This time the variables were population, food production, industrialization, pollution and consumption of nonrenewable natural resources.
"The Limits to Growth" pushed the collapse of civilization to 2072, when the limits of growth would be the most readily apparent and result in population and industrial declines.
Criticism of the book was nearly immediate, and harsh. The New York Times, for instance, wrote, "Its imposing apparatus of computer technology and systems jargon ... takes arbitrary assumptions, shakes them up and comes out with arbitrary conclusions that have the ring of science," concluding that the book was "empty and misleading."
Others argued that the book's view of what constitutes a resource could change over time, leaving their data shortsighted to any possible changes in consumption habits.
The tide for the book's finds have changed over time, however. In 2014, Graham Turner, then a research fellow at the University Melbourne's Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute, collected data from various agencies within the United Nations, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other outlets, plotting their data alongside the findings of the World3 model.
What Turner found that was that the World3 model and then-current statistical information tended to coincide with another, up to 2010, indicating that the World3 model was onto something. Turner cautioned that the validation of World3's model didn't indicate "agreement" with it, largely due to certain parameters within the World3 model. Still, Turner argued that we were likely on "cusp of collapse" thanks to a few different factors, in particular what Turner called the end of peak easy oil access.
Writing in The Guardian, Turner and Cathy Alexander, a Melbourne-based journalist, explained that neither the World3 model or Turner's own confirmation of it signaled that the collapse was a guarantee.
"Our research does not indicate that collapse of the world economy, environment and population is a certainty," they wrote. "Nor do we claim the future will unfold exactly as the MIT researchers predicted back in 1972. Wars could break out; so could genuine global environmental leadership. Either could dramatically affect the trajectory.
"But our findings should sound an alarm bell. It seems unlikely that the quest for ever-increasing growth can continue unchecked to 2100 without causing serious negative effects – and those effects might come sooner than we think."

Emma Graham-Harrison and Peter Beaumont at The Guardian:
A UN investigation has accused Israel and Hamas of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity on and since 7 October, the date of Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel. The allegations were contained in two parallel reports prepared by a commission of inquiry formed in 2021 by the UN Human Rights Council to investigate human rights violations in Israel and the Palestinian territories, chaired by the former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay. The first report focused on crimes committed by Palestinian armed groups during the 7 October attack, while the second examined Israel’s culpability in the large-scale deaths of civilians in the subsequent Israeli offensive against Hamas in Gaza. Pillay, a South African legal expert, is viewed with hostility by Israel for her previous criticism of Israel’s human rights record. The reports constitute the first in-depth investigation into the events since 7 October by a UN body. The commission, which has no power to impose any penalties, described serious crimes committed by both sides in the conflict, including by Palestinian armed groups during the attack on Israeli communities near the border with Gaza on 7 October. It accuses Hamas’s military wing and six other Palestinian armed groups – aided in some instances by Palestinian civilians – of killings, torture, sexual violence and systematic kidnapping. “Many abductions were carried out with significant physical, mental and sexual violence and degrading and humiliating treatment, including in some cases parading the abductees,” the report said. “Women and women’s bodies were used as victory trophies by male perpetrators.”
In a statement, the panel said it had identified a pattern of sexual violence by Hamas and concluded that these were not isolated incidents, but similar events occurring in different locations. The report also described the desecration of bodies, including in a sexualised way, as well as decapitations and burning. The commission was equally damning about Israel’s conduct in the war, accusing it of using disproportionate force that amounted to a direct attack on civilians, resulting in a casualty rate “unparalleled across conflicts in recent decades”.
The commission found Israeli authorities “responsible for the war crimes of starvation as a method of warfare, murder or wilful killing, intentionally directing attacks against civilians and civilian objects, forcible transfer, sexual violence, torture and inhuman or cruel treatment, arbitrary detention and outrages upon personal dignity”. The alleged sexual violence by Israeli forces related to the stripping of Palestinian men and boys, pictures of which were made public by Israeli troops, which the report said was “intended to inflict severe humiliation”. The report also accused Israel of the war crime of starvation, saying Israel not only failed to provide essential supplies such as food, water, shelter and medicine to Palestinians, but also “acted to prevent the supply of those necessities by anyone else”.
A pair of UN investigations reveal that BOTH Israel and Hamas committed war crimes during the current iteration of the Israel/Hamas war that began on October 7th, 2023.

for the book ask: 1 :) and 12 and 13
How many books did you read this year?
as of today my count is 129!!
[cracks knuckles] time to be a HATER
12. Any books that disappointed you?
Small Fires by Rebecca May Johnson because i know a lot of people who love her writing! and i do really enjoy her newsletters. this book though... it felt a bit too pretentious, a bit too forced, like she was trying too hard to make you care about food in a "new" and "intellectual" way. girl just give us the recipes
There's Always This Year by Hanif Abdurraqib
again i love hanif's writing (just today i read his instagram post about running and felt #emotional) but i think perhaps he works better for me in short form essays. this book didn't hit for me
13. What were your least favorite books of the year?
How to Lose the Time War by Amal el-Mohtar & Max Gladstone
i knew i would hate this book so tbh the L is on me. in fairness i was in a house with nothing to read but my god what a waste of time. the most overwrought overblown prose, with no distinctive character voice. i could not have cared less about red or blue or their (incredibly unbelievable) love story. but worst of all i just simply did not care about what was going on in the war. the authors were just pulling stuff out of their head because it sounded cool rather than actually doing any substantive worldbuilding. boo hiss tomato tomato tomato
The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley
oh i hated this one down. self-insert rpf with some man from that terror tv show that everyone loves so maybe if you've got those brainworms this book will appeal in that regard. me personally? i didn't give a fuck about naval officer graham gore and his journey to wokeness, hated the half-baked "decolonial" politics which are impossible to take seriously when your protagonist literally works for the british government. the sex scene made me want to rip out my own eyeballs
Stone Yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood
this is probably my number one most hated book of the year because it got so much critical acclaim. but guys.... it's just BAD? even setting aside the whole concept of "disaffected white woman quits job at endangered species centre to go live with white australian nuns because they do no harm and are peaceful <3" which i could spend days ranting about, the prose is absolute garbage. i mean, look at this
GOD. SHUT UP

The new reef tank is set up and taken care of.. here is nice wet picture
now for a lot of stress and depressing things about Flak and life and blah
Emergency vet followup visit yesterday was fruitful, just with good and bad news. Good news is that this COULD just be a sinus infection rather than an eye infection, and the sinus pressure cavity is pushing very hard behind Flak's eye. His pupil is dilated and unresponsive, so something is definitely messing with it. We switched from the topical antibiotic for his eye to an anti-inflammatory eyedrop, which has helped significantly just in 24hrs. He's opening his eye more, but it's still unresponsive and I don't think he can see out of it.
It has been hell on earth trying to get him to eat and drink. I've had to water him through a syringe, and the vet sent me home with emergency/critical care syringe feeding food which I've had to force on him. He's been eating some sweet potato, just not enough to survive off of. His lethargy really, really scares me. The other option for his eye is that it could be cancer and a tumor has developed and is applying pressure.
More bad news is that he's developed a pretty significant heart murmur. Last time we were at the vet pre-covid, his heart health was excellent. So this is new in the past few years. Dr. Graham suspects heart disease, which isn't out of the ordinary for poultry, and I know that's part of him just... getting older. He'll be 12 in just a few months, that is extraordinarily old for a Serama.
I am run ragged, I feel like a corpse. I am so scared for Flak, I know we're nowhere near out of the woods yet. The new saltwater tank is set up at least, it was a fucking nightmare but it's taken care of. I lost three of my fish in the transfer over. One was older than how long we had the 125gal, so 10+ years. The others were over 5. I think they just couldn't handle the stress of it all, but I'm really upset about losing them. I've also thrown my back out in the process. It was shocking to see just how bad the 125gal had got though, it was splitting at the seams and rather than "you have several days to figure this out" crisis, was very close to being a catastrophic failure crisis. I got it secondhand, had it for over ten years, and the man who had it before me had it long enough to run a reef tank and a cichlid tank in it for a long while. It was in good condition when I got it, but I have NO idea how old that tank actually was.
This year has been so godawful, I just want to make it through the last few days without another crisis.

1, 2, 3, 8, 14, 26 for Zihun? :3c
Zihun!! Gruncle crimes against humanity and concerning voter policy <3
1) Does your OC have a voice claim, if so who?
I don't have a good ear for voice-claims, so can't think of one off the top of my head. pensive emoji.
2) Who's your OCs best friend? How did they become best friends?
Arcade!! two gay besties. They both know each other way too well to want to kiss at this point. sad! Zihun convinced him it was a better use of Arcade's time to travel with him, which then lead to both of them playing key roles in the future of Vegas (and Freeside) after the dam was won, including Arcade being the one to convince Zihun to distribute power to the whole grid and not localised to the Strip, which had a knock-on effect of Zihun investing in infrastructure development throughout the Mojave territory. Arcade likes Zihun because the fucker knows how to convince a crowd, and get real work done. Zihun thinks Arcade is good for the banter, but doesn't like when the guy provides real, substantial criticisms to his leadership choices. (but it's by vitrue of their shared experiences travelling the wastes that he at least considers listening)
Veronica also used to be very close with Zihun, them having something of a brother-sister (from Zihun's persepective, happy to have a sister after not seeing his own for many years) slash mentor-mentee (Veronica only really knows hierarchy, and with how Zihun as a person functions, natural leader with scary amibitions and all, this created a neat and tidy dynamic for the two of them to get along)(until the bunker was destroyed, and freshly-banished Veronica knowing exactly who did it).
She probably would've forgiven him if Zihun hadn't justified the brotherhood deaths as 'insurance'. After a loud argument, Veronica stormed out of Vegas. Out of spite, Zihun never told her about Christine's story and fate (still alive, but at the Sierra Madre) - nor that part of his choice to destroy the bunker instead of brokering some kind of treaty between the BOS and Vegas was due to his suffering by Elijah's hands in Blood Money.
3) What song describes your OC?
'Back to the Barracks' by the Zipheads feels quinessentially a FNV/Courier 6 song (despite being so underrated), but for Zihun specifically I would also put forward 'Through the Valley' by Shawn James :}
8) What hobbies does your OC have? What do they do to unwind?
Zihun smokes and whittles to get his nerves in check while out on the road, but he's also big on tinkering with ammo and figuring out what fucked up pre-apocalypse foods might work well with his morning coffee. It has not been fruitful.
14) Who's a character your OC cannot stand! It's on sight when they see them!
Oh god who isn't. If we're talking physically violent 'on-sight', then it'd be characters like BOS Paladins (for the pain Veronica went through with those people). Benny (shot him :/). The Think Tank (Little Yangtze.). As well as Fiend head honchos like Motor Runner, who wasn't killed in this universe, as Zihun is terrified of subterranean, enclosed spaces, and the thought of a gunfight with fiends in that vault wasn't very pretty to mister '4 endurance'.
For the Fiends, Zihun sees them as a very current and real threat. If anything, they're the last smudge of 'dirt' on his plans to effectively take over the Mojave in House's stead (the Omertas were effectively castrated when Nero was killed in the shootout, and then Zihun shot Cachino in order to take over the Gomorrah on his own). The Fiends mess with his nascent trade routes and terrorise Vegas settlements. They're damn thorns in his side and if he likes to take the occasional potshot at them from the Lucky 38... God forbid gay people do anything??
If it's more verbal jabs/seething but not breaking the peace, then General Oliver (asshole), Joshua Graham (mormon)(blue eyes), Daniel (mormon)(mansplains midwifery to the midwife).
26) What flower do you associate your OC with?
The flowers of the coyote tobacco plant :} perhaps on the nose, but a hardy desert species that nonetheless is beautiful

What mods do you use for this save, if you don’t mind me asking? I’m assuming MCCC to override the household member limit, but anything else?
And how much autonomy do you allow these nincompoops? For example: did David Johnson autonomously start flirting with Henrietta, or did you script that? I’d be very impressed if you have entire storylines written out in advance, but managing to turn sim AI into a coherent plot also takes mad skills.
Just for my own amusement: do you have a favorite family/sim atm?
Thank you for asking, please feel free to ignore my incoming ramble, I am constitutionally incapable of keeping things short (but you read the blog, so you probably already know that).
I use MCCC to override the household limit and increase the limit of sims allowed on a lot up the wazoo so I can get everyone assembled at church or the Johnsons' house. I also double the bills and half skill gains and career performance gains (and in some cases just stop career progression entirely if it doesn't suit the story), because the game makes it too easy to accumulate wealth, and them all being rich and not struggling with finances would really take the fun out of the Fundies (and really, with their education, they're not supposed to get promoted anyway).
For the religion content, I use Rambunctious Religions.
For screenshot purposes, I also have pose player and teleport any Sim (obviously), in addition to that Control Any Sim (invaluable if you have people from other households who just won't do what you want them to), Less Musical Chairs and No Stand Up to Greet from LittleMsSam, and a few mods that remove effects such as food sparkles and floor sparkles and sparkles around heads and other cosmetic things similar to that, as well as a few to turn off fade on trees and columns.
As for things peculiar to Fundie gameplay, with as often as everyone is pregnant, LittleMsSam's Pregnancy Overhaul is also a must, because if those ladies can't exercise during their pregnancies, they'll never exercise. I also got the Unlimited Jobs mod from Turbodriver because if you've got eleventy kids, one job really doesn't cut it, and you need a side job for your side job. Also a mod for them to keep their instruments in their inventory because these kids are always practicing the violin and keeping their instruments in any semblance of order is a chore. And Adults can Cry which is obviously critical for them to express their misery with their choices.
There's also a lot of modest clothing CC (even though I try to keep it rather minimal - I rarely succeed). And I recently installed Healthcare Redux to spice up the whole thing a bit, because I was getting a bit bored with gameplay lately.
As for how much autonomy they have... very little, I'm afraid! I'm a bit (more than a bit) of a control freak, and I have a large SPREADSHEET where everything is accounted for. I usually have a Sims' general life direction planned out before they're even born (so I can start giving them the personality they need for their plot starting as young as toddlers, and also so I can start dropping story hints), though sometimes they do surprise me (Chelsea leaving was not planned that way, she was set to get married and have a lot of Fundie kids, but then she rebelled so hard and I liked her so much that I just couldn't do that to her, and Sharon Graham was supposed to be a Fundie lawyer lady in a politically influential Fundie power couple... but then I couldn't do that to her parents).
Stories shift around as they develop and I get to know them (honestly, I thought Baker and Lily would be a boring standard-issue Fundie couple together and then I wrote them and I realized all the issues they have from the way they grew up and I couldn't just not add that to their relationship dynamic!) and see how much I like them or not, and whether I'm having fun with them, whether they get along, or if it would be weird for them to end up together, and I also have a long, long list of ideas to draw from if I totally draw a blank with a kid (which does happen). As for Henrietta, she was made for having an affair with David, quite literally, the poor woman.
As for my current favorites... I really like Mark and Kathryn Graham a lot, because they're some of the very few decent folks I currently have in the game, and Mark's just living his best life right now. And on the other end of the spectrum, I'm absolutely, ridiculously excited about Priscilla Sawyer (née Johnson) starting her arc, because while she's not a good person, she will be so much fun, and rebelling hardcore against the Fundie wife mold. Max Sr. and Jr. have no idea what's going to hit them.

Judy Chicago (American, born 1939). The Dinner Party, 1974–79. Ceramic, porcelain, textile, 576 × 576 in. (1463 × 1463 cm). Brooklyn Museum; Gift of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Foundation, 2002.10
Judy Chicago, a prominent American feminist artist, writer, and educator, made significant contributions to feminist art in the 1970s. She co-founded the first U.S. feminist art program in 1970 and later established the Feminist Studio Workshop in Los Angeles.
Among her influential works is "The Dinner Party" (1974–1979), a groundbreaking feminist artwork celebrating women's achievements. The monument presents a large, triangular table, 48 feet on each side, with place settings for 39 significant women from various periods in history. Each of these spots has a fancy plate, utensils, a cup, and a beautiful table runner with the woman's name on it. It's like a fancy set-up for a special meal, but instead of food, it's a tribute to these awesome ladies. Not only that, but 999 more names were secretly written on the bottom of the table. Each woman's story is not just about her individual accomplishments but also about her body as a site of historical and political significance. The monument, created through a collaborative effort over five years, highlights the power of feminist vision and artistic collaboration, showcasing the significance of women's experiences and identities.
The 39 guests at the monument are:
Malala Yousafzai
Michelle Obama
K. Rowling
Sandra Day O’Connot
Ina Garten
Dame Zaha Mohammad Hadid
Carolina Herrera
Princess Diana
Dame Jane Goodall
Bell Hooks
Larisa Latynina
Corazon Aquino

For the reader to fill
Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party" faced political backlash when she tried to donate it to the University of the District of Columbia. The U.S. Senate criticized it as "3-D ceramic pornography" and a "weird feminist spectacle." Although the imagery on the tables uses flowers and butterflies, it also resembles female genetalia, which some people find inappropriate, disturbing, and distracting from the main point of the artwork.
In 2007, the piece found a permanent home at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Centre for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. The triangular table shape symbolizes feminine unity and strength, with an inverted triangle possibly representing the divine feminine or personal growth. Each setting represents a historical era, challenging the idea that women's contributions are limited to specific times or places.
The unique plates at each setting symbolize the women they represent, going beyond mere acknowledgment of achievements to encapsulate their lived experiences. Chicago's use of diverse materials reflects the essence of each woman's achievements and historical context.
"The Dinner Party" also recognizes overlooked figures, challenging the historical erasure of women's agency. By placing women from various backgrounds at a symbolic table, Chicago asserts their significance in shaping history, science, art, and culture.

Graham texted me to go get drinks and I am stressed out. Its like I want to feel neutral but of course, it makes me feel some sort of way. This morning I had an amazing feeling of peace sitting out by the creek, delving into my maternal side. My feminine energy. Realizing a huge reason why I ate the food was to escape the voice. That's really what I was running from, my own internal critic. My own inner doubt. I was succumbing to the doubt. Telling it, youre right I'm stuck. I will eat because I'm scared of you and I dont know where else to turn. In my book it speaks about others uncovering the reason why they overeat is because.. they are scared of their sister who is hypocritical of them. I am pretty confident that I ate because I was scared of myself.
I'm tired. Tonight I am tired. Shoot I forgot my quionoa on the stove.
He was making conversation with me and I get so nervous I like shut down and cant say anything. its really so sad. my inner critic already coming out when it comes to dating. love that for me.
sophies gonna call me she said give me 15 but I swear I cant even do that
