I really ought to look into starting some sort of folksinging group. It's one of the things I miss about spending a lot of time around other folklorists. Or, you know, in the area where I picked up like 60% of my ballads. Communal music is a great thing. It's fun! But it's also a great way to learn about other folks and their cultural backgrounds. Every culture has folk music. Yes, even the broader, overarching US culture, for as much as there even is an overarching US culture. We're kind of a tossed salad around here. But that honestly just makes it even better.
I love song circles and jam sessions. They're a very chill environment focused on creativity, community, and learning from one another. There are no skill requirements and you need not even know anything going in. Just show up with your instrument and/or voice and a willingness to learn and you're good. I really should see about starting a singing circle around here. It'd be nice to have that again.

Alternate Educations
My favorite subjects? In High school, it was cutting classes. It eventually led to my expulsion, but it also introduced me to new paths in life that my uptown peers never encountered. I would cut classes and promptly head to Hanrahan’s pool “Parlour.” I was, and still am, awful at playing pool. But you can’t justify some things; only wonder at the sheer stupidity of enjoying them. And pool, by…

A slightly arbitrary list w a mix of people who were popular or prominent in the scene at the time and some of my own faves bc it's my poll
#the definition of 'not talked about as much by the tumblr folkies' is also a bit arbitrary#basically it's 'fave revival era folksinger who isn't guthrie dylan baez mitchell ochs seeger or cohen'#folk music tag#folk

This attempt to match my outfit to my book ended up less "anthropomorphic creature cozy mystery" and more "Disney's Robin Hood", but an attempt was made.

This particular Tom Lewis (it's a pretty common name) is pretty big in the contemporary British Sea Shanty/folk music scene (He's the one who wrote "The Last Shanty").
In this particular video he gives background info for, and sings, a song about old time music hall life.
For some reason, it's classified by YouTube as "for kids" (even though the live audience is all adults, and there's a humorous verse about an extra marital affair). So I can't leave a comment saying how much I liked this one.
So I'm showing my appreciation this way.

Well, listen to the rumble, the rattle, and the roar
She glides along the woodlands, down the hills and by the shore
Hear the mighty rush of engine, hear the lonesome hobo call
Ride the rosin, break a bead on the Wabash Cannonball
#this song has been such a blessing lately and I’m so thankful#it’s the little things like the way he says ‘she’s a girl from tennessee she’s long she’s tall’#or ‘new york by the harbor to chicago by the way’#it calms me down#also can’t wait to learn how to play it so I can finally call myself a folksinger lol#townes van zandt#the carter family#country music#journal songs

Flashback Friday- songs your mother never taught you
originally posted – February 9, 2021 I had moved to Portland to get away from Boston. In those days, the late 1960’s, Portland was a hike from Boston and was in an entirely different cultural world.Portland came well equipped with a small church-run coffeehouse that I could habituate when not working. The Gate Coffeehouse became the center of my social life. After work in the afternoon, I’d go…
