I painted this Baba Yaga inspired illustration a few weeks ago and now I’m itching to expand to more Slavic folklore.

Day 10 // Wraith
You will hear this spirit before you see it. The sound of a horse galloping towards you in the night, a low drumming noise that drowns out every other sound around you, until it gets so overwhelming that you won’t be able to hear your own thoughts. Then comes the fog, rolling in from all sides, and you will see the the black stallion approach you slowly. Mounted on top, the horseman that carries his head with him. Now you must be careful and clever, or this will be the last sight you ever get to see.

If you're ever by a stream with a lot of trout, keep your eyes open for the little souls of Victorian businessmen that swirl about in there. You see, they didn't have enough fun in life, so this is how they make up for it. Or so I'm told.

Three more requests! I meant to make them all black&white but well, green knight somehow doesn't work all that well without green 🍀
IX. The Green Knight for romanodegois and @a-gremlin-for-my-thoughts VIII. Otesánek eating his mum for msdearcos who asked for folklore's creature from Czechia VII. for christine.kasparian who asked for spooky fairytale for the autumn season. I chose czech fairy tale Hádanka (Riddle) about this queen who made household items from the bones (and hair) of her lover to take a revenge on his killer.
Enjoy! 💀

RIP to Walnut, the crane who took her keeper for a mate. The stuff of a dark fairytale.

Day 5 // Window
Holle has many faces, many stories upon her name. She lures you into her lair, makes you work for her and then sends you off again with whatever you deserve. Her name is close to hell, her intentions close to the devil. The Mother takes care of the souls of infants, if they die at a young age. Her being is filled with contrasts - from rebirth til death, from the warm hearth and home to snowstorms and frost.
