If in Riga and needing assurance that you’re having a fully Latvian experience, stop by Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs for a drink and some incredibly cheap (and good) bar snacks. A basement tavern with an overwhelming number of beer offerings, we visited many times over the course of four days in Riga. Try the cranberry honey beer and go on a weekend night to watch Latvians dance enthusiastically for hours on end to Latvian music. Not a single English language pop song will be played.

Hollywood & honey beer
Hollywood & honey beer
Well, I definitely can’t say that I’m not living the full experience of my Eurotrip (side bar: “Eurotrip” is such a common expression here and refers to those who backpack through Europe for a couple weeks or a couple months. It’s so much more efficient than saying “trip to Europe”).
Honestly, I’m completely surprised by this trip. Last time, I only really met people two of the nights, Salzburg…

63rd day (22nd of june) We woke up with no clouds in sight. The forecast told us it will stay like that for a while now - finally no rain jackets necessary anymore 😊 The last 65 km were going smooth even though having slight headwind. In Vecumniek we had a short stop: a private person built marvelous tiny houses and sculptures in his garden. We were not the only ones who got attracted. A Dutch man enjoyed a short stop too. Because we wanted to clean the tent we decided that an official camping would be the best choice. We arrived around 2.30 at the "Camping & yacht" located on an island about 3km from downtown. We had a nice view onto the yachts and the river. We were also lucky to get a spot right under a tree. After setting up the tent we first wanted to discover the city. With the bike it took us about 15 minutes to get there. Mel wanted to test out the "Folkklubs ala pagrabs", about which he read good reviews. We just arrived to the happy hour and got 2 beers for one. I've got the Madona (amber) and Mel a dark beer. Both were very tasty. We also ordered food which was well prepared. Also the garlic bread out of rye was delicious. Of course we were staying until the happy hour was done then we moved on. We were actually trying to visit the sightseeing points of our guide we received in the camping. However as we left the other bar we passed a next one which was having happy hour too - we couldn't resist to enter the "tims mints" with the coziest living room of town. Edgar the bartender was chatting with us a lot - she is half Belarus and half Latvian. Her English was surprisingly good and without any accent. We had another beer and a long Island ice tea while enjoying the chat. She invited us to come on the 24th of June to celebrate the solstice. Sadly that was one day too late for us and we had to turn down the offer. Afterwards we discovered further to the city. Around 10pm we decided to bike back to the camping. There was still daylight which made us lose our track of time. https://www.instagram.com/p/CfM3vTTINb1-mFVWX74qsWnpolQKF3QapAxUgo0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Disclosure: I was a complimentary guest of the Investment and Development Agency during my time here. All opinions and recommendations are my own. This post also contains affiliate links.
Latvia was one of several Eastern European countries I unexpectedly visited this past May. Amongst them, Estonia fascinated me. Romania surprised me. And Sigulda, the small town city an hour outside of Riga, charmed me.
I had no idea what to expect of Riga, but my expectations were high nonetheless. I liked all the places I’d visited thus far, so why should Latvia’s capital be any different? Like it’s neighbors, Riga is best seen by wandering…and wander we did. This isn’t a top things to do in Riga post because we didn’t see the top things per say. Rather, Chantell from Adoration 4 Adventure and I wandered through Riga on bike and foot, marveling at whatever crossed our path.
With just two days in the city, it was virtually impossible to do everything without rushing. So instead, I’m sharing my top five cool things to do in Riga, knowing that one day I’ll be back to take the city by storm.
Things to Do in Riga
Go on a food tasting tour
1/5 Central Market buildings
#PickleLIfe
Flowers at Central Market
Desa & Co
Being me, I was pretty excited to do the food tasting tour with E.A.T. Riga on our first day. Confession: I’m obsessed with food markets (and supermarkets) in other countries and was stoked that the Riga Central Market was part of our tour. It’s actually the biggest food market in Europe, with FIVE different buildings, each dedicated to different products (meat, vegetables, pastries, clothing, and flowers). Our tour guide, Agnese, led us through the different areas, explaining the historical significance of each one. I asked her a ton of questions about various products and about Latvian food in general, and she happily answered all of them.
After exploring the Central Market, it was time to eat! We headed to Desa & Co for a sampling of traditional Latvian foods. Latvian food has a large Russian influence, focusing primarily on pork, fish, pickles, and bread. It wasn’t too challenging to find options without pork thankfully, although there were a couple of things on the tour sampling menu I couldn’t eat.
I tried:
Lightly salted pickles
Marinated cabbage with beetroot
Rye bread with carrots
Vecrīga- a sweet pastry with cottage cheese
Hemp butter
Jāņu siers- traditional cheese with caraway seeds
Ievas siers- cheese with pesto
Kvass- a non-alcoholic drink made of rye
Surprisingly, my two favorite things were the marinated pickled cabbage and the pastry (which reminded me of a cream puff). It did feel like a random mix of foods but enjoyed the meal nonetheless. It is worth noting that this was a light tasting lunch rather than a full-blown, eat-until-you’re-stuffed food tour. This was an excellent introduction to Latvian cuisine, and we got some stellar restaurant recommendations from Agnese as well. P.S. Check out the various food tours offered by E.A.T. Riga here.
Walk through the Kronvalda Park
I love finding public parks when I travel, especially those located in an urban city. Kronvalda was conveniently located near our accommodation, but it’s not too far from the Old Town either – just a 15-minute walk. This large park has a canal running through the middle and is an excellent place for running, biking, people-watching and picnicking. Plus, cool photo ops. Including the one pictured above with a giant monkey in a spacesuit. Shrug.
Stroll through the Art Nouveau District
Fun fact, Art Nouveau is another way to describe beautiful, ornate architecture with zero chill and all the details. And I love it. So does Riga, because there’s straight up an entire neighborhood filled with Art Nouveau buildings. Albert Street and Elizabeth Street are the best places to gawk at these buildings.
Go on a bike tour
Genuine distress
Across the bridge!
Houses of Kipsala
Views
I’m not sure how I got talked into doing a bike tour the following day but I’m glad I did! I have to admit that I was very, very nervous to do this tour. I hadn’t ridden a bike in five years and was incredibly nervous to ride alongside cars and other bikers. Thankfully, Riga is built for biking and we spent the majority of our time on bike paths and in less congested areas anyway. This was an amazing way to see the city. Not only were we able to explore a lot of the Old Town at the beginning, but we also crossed the bridge to ride around the island of Kipsala, located on the other side of the Daugava River. This area is incredibly calm and quiet but offers stunning views of central Riga – and plenty of interesting architecture. Kipsala has a variety of wooden fishermen’s houses in various stages of renovation. Even if you don’t opt for a bike tour, this is still an area well-worth visiting.
On our way back, we rode through the Art Nouveau neighborhood, where Chantell and I were staying. The architecture here is mind-blowingly detailed and impressive, and the contrasting buildings were fascinating. We also rode through Kronvalda park and through the Old Town, stopping along the way to soak up some historical knowledge about Latvia from Agnese. I know I always recommend walking tours as the best way to explore a new city, but in Riga, biking is the way to go!
Walk around the Old Town
Riga’s Old Town is nothing short of charming, with cobblestone-lined streets and historical buildings tucked amongst modern ones. We wandered through the town several times, soaking in the lively ambiance. But if you’re on a mission to make sure you see everything, be sure not to miss The Town Hall Square, Freedom Monument, and The Three Brothers, amongst others.
Where to Eat in Riga
Also known as the most important section of a city guide ;).
Apsara Tea House
Bibliotēka
Restorāns 3
Restorāns Bibliotēka: If you’re in Riga to #TreatYoself, then this is the place to go! Chantell and I realized that we were both celebrating travelversaries in Latvia – countries number 50 and 30, respectively. We were really eager to treat ourselves to the tasting menu at one of the best restaurants in town….but we arrived too late for them to serve it to us. Womp, womp. Instead, we treated ourselves to three delicious, drool-worthy courses. I was pretty bummed about missing the tasting menu but at least I got a good meal out of it!
Apsara Tea House: I couldn’t come up with a more perfect location for this tea house if I’d tried. That’s because it’s located in the middle of a park, with both indoor and outdoor seating and a view of the canal. They have a wide selection of delicious teas. It’s an excellent place to spend a couple of hours relaxing and people-watching.
Restorāns 3: It was a Sunday afternoon when I showed up at Restaurant 3, another gem recommended to me by our food tour guide. I was excited to try their lunch but found that the only thing available was their brunch buffet. I was disappointed at first but that feeling disappeared as soon as I took my first bite. Soup, salads, cold and warm food, and dessert – the staff certainly went all out. It was an excellent way to sample a variety of local eats and I left with a full and happy stomach. If you’re looking for a modern twist on traditional food, this is the place for you.
Folkklubs: If you eat ONE meal in Riga, make it a meal at Folkklubs. The food is delicious and reasonably priced, but that’s not the only reason to traipse across town. This lively tavern is one of the few places in central Riga that offers live Latvian music in addition to the traditional fare. With costumed dancers and a live band, it was seriously the perfect way to end our time in Riga.
Where to Stay in Riga
As much as I loved Old Town Riga, it was a tad lively for my liking, especially because I’m a grandma and like to sleep. Instead, Chantell and I stayed a 15-minute walk from the center, at a private room at Riga Park Hostel. This accommodation is really cool because it’s not your traditional hostel. Rather, it’s a collection of private rooms with several bathrooms and a large kitchen. It’s an excellent choice for those looking for a little privacy. I’d definitely stay here again!
Otherwise, find some great deals below!
(function(d, sc, u) { var s = d.createElement(sc), p = d.getElementsByTagName(sc)[0]; s.type = 'text/javascript'; s.async = true; s.src = u + '?v=' + (+new Date()); p.parentNode.insertBefore(s,p); })(document, 'script', '//aff.bstatic.com/static/affiliate_base/js/flexiproduct.js');
Getting Around
While Old Town Riga is fairly compact and easily walkable, the surrounding area is much more spread out. I recommend renting a bike for a day or two, especially if you want to cover the majority of the city. There are also public transport options including trams, trolleys, and buses. If you have some extra time or are sticking to the center, Riga can easily be explored on foot.
To be honest, there a lot of cool things to do in Riga, and Chantell and I barely scratched the surface. If you’re limited on time, you can probably cover the highlights in 3-4 full days, but if you have the time, come and stay awhile. You’ll be surprised by this underrated capital city!
Tell me: Have you ever been to Riga? What was your favorite part of the city? Share in the comments below!

The Baltic States
Literally only came home for one day after Lofoten and set off to the Baltic region again. HAHA when I talk about plans I have for the upcoming weekends, people here always have the same kind of response: “how many trips do you have?!”. Kinda think its just a Singaporean thing to love travel though. The Baltic region is not a common tourist destination but it is one of the regions that I have been wanting to go!
I did a solo trip here, which as you guys know I love, so I was very excited. I landed in Estonia, but decided to head to Latvia for two days before checking the place out. Honestly, they are pretty similar but Latvia was prettier! think this place is something that you will like if you are into fine architecture or medieval shit. *cues dionne*. What surprised me was how almost everyone could speak English fluently and how safe it was??
These are some attractions but the streets and every building in the Old Towns are lined with super detailed and nice architecture. I went into this traditional bar restaurant based on the local’s recommendation called Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs, and it was SO GOOD?? The bar looks like a place that came out of a movie set in another century, with live traditional music, and most importantly super good food. I tried this dessert called “beer fritters” and IT WAS JIZZZZ. Also tried some Latvian beer and I wish I could have more but I was too full.
Also this random Latvian girl came up to me and told me that my sweater was super cute and asked where i bought it! I was secretly quite happy about it hahahahah.
I popped into this cafe and they had some very sarcastic murals (HAHA LAV IT) but these were my fav:
~~~~~
DAY 4: ESTONIA
Headed to an open air museum first and it showed different estonian farms in the early centuries. There was this super cute ancient-looking candy shop! I just HAD TO buy something there haha. Almost got lost cos it was so quiet and we kept walking in circles afterwards though.
~
I think I generally loved it there because I like medieval shit. I casually mentioned this and was recommended to go to this medieval-themed restaurant and it was such an interesting experience omg!
It was too dark inside (it was only lit with candles on each table like how it really used to be in medieval times or the kind you see in Game of Thrones) so I couldn’t really capture it. But literally everything was designed that way, the interior, the dressing of the waiters and waitresses, and how the food was served (look at the wooden fork and knife hahah). OK even the toilet sink was like in a pot of water like that!
Also i did a lucky draw and won a medieval hand-made cup that was worth 5Euros (which is alot given that one meal here costs less than 5euros)! :D
~
I did a city walking tour and met this Indian guy that I really hit it off with. I don’t know how it is that I can click with a middle-aged Indian man but ok HAHAHHA. We ended up having lunch together for 2.5hrs (much wowz) and we even wanted to make plans together the next day (but I bailed)! It was actually very nice and you learn so much just meeting new people from all walks of life. He had a business in India which he sold, moved to Amsterdam and have been travelling around Europe for almost two years. The other day in Latvia I also had dinner and drinks with this canadian girl who quit her job and sold her home and has been travelling around for a year or so. And she just plans to keep travelling until she run out of money and then decide where to work. Damn YOLO, I really wish one day I can save up enough money and muster the courage to just do this as well.
Cheryl hung out with me sometimes, and we went to catch Phantom of the Opera! It’s kinda my first musical and it was good, but she didnt like the plot and kept saying how stupid the main characters are HAHAHAH. But listening to their singing kinda makes me wana go back and listen to symphonic metal again #teenagedays
Also apparently you’re supposed to dress up when you attend a musical? we went there in our sweater and jeans when everyone else was dressed like it was prom with suits and fancy dresses OMG LOL.
I dont have any photos but I want to mention about the Bastion Passages. It was a secret underground tunnel used since the 1700s by locals for various reasons, up all the way till the 1990s and it was turned into a museum only in recent years. Alot of its original condition is still there and we could walk through the entire tunnel with a guide that explained the timeline and some exhibits. We also saw alot of huge carved stones and it was pretty cool! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PLACE TO GO IF YOU EVER VISIT ESTONIA.
(in certain parts of the tunnel I actually felt some very bad vibes though, I was a little scared, but i would still say its a must-go)
ok the story of this photo above is damn funny. so this random dude was walking past and I kinda told Cheryl out loud to take the photo only after he has walked past. BUT HE SUDDENLY STARTED WALKING TOWARDS ME AND I WAS SCARED FOR A MOMENT LIKE OMG WTF WHAT DOES THIS DUDE WANT. But he just stopped beside me and did a hipster pose. Apparently he overheard me saying it to her LOLOL so i figured and then copied his pose and we took a photo together anyway HAHHAHA RANDOM AF.
~~
Just gonna end the post with this photo because I like it, and also this is the cute sweater as mentioned, and also we waited more than an hour to try this famous estonian pancake HAHA. It was quite nice but damn gelat after a while.
Thanks for hosting and it was a lovely weekend!! :)
I’m not sure Latvian will go down as one of the great cuisines of the world, however the food was bloody good there.
The place that was recommended most often for a true Latvian experience was Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs in the old town. It’s an underground tavern with live music serving traditional food and a great range of beers. I pulled up a stool at the bar and ate some excellent meatballs in a creamy sauce with sauerkraut. Only I didn’t eat the sauerkraut because I have horrific memories of it as a kid (mum bought it tinned) and even though I thought it might be better fresh in a country of origin, it was not.
The beers were fantastic, particularly a honey beer I had and the service was really friendly as well. Would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting.
The other place I’d recommend is a restaurant called Lido that has the single most incredible buffet I’ve ever seen in my life. You grabbed s tray and then whatever hot or cold food and drinks you wanted. Salads, desserts, breads, meats, it had everything and was ridiculously cheap. A must do if you find yourself in Riga.
Riga, Latvia
Next stop on the Baltic tour – Riga, Latvia. About four hours from Tallinn, this city is brimming with art nouveau architecture, restaurants, bars and coffee shops. It’s situated on the Baltic Sea and is the largest city in all the Baltic States. If you’re traveling between the Baltic States, I recommend taking Lux Express buses. They are clean, on time, comfortable, equipped with power sockets…
