something I've been thinking about on and off with regards to Legend of Zelda is the ways in which it gets fantasy religion very right, despite the fact that it kind of started as "we don't understand Christianity" and careened into "let's throw in what we're familiar with and make it something of its own"
in fact, perhaps it gets its fantasy religion right in the ways that it does BECAUSE this is how it started
and the core root of what Zelda gets right about it is...
Hylia and the Three Goddesses don't have fixed character designs.
Think about it. Your average jrpg, you're almost certainly fighting God at some point, and he almost certainly has a specific character design because of course he does, and a LOT of fantasy settings just use that same basic character design throughout all the iconography
but how do you always know it's Jesus in Christian art? He's every skintone a man can have, and while most White Jesuses (Jesii??) look like Cesare Borgia I don't have to be told when a picture of a Black man is meant to be Christ.
Or how do you know it's a particular polytheistic god, or a character from a folk tale, or whatever?
How do you always know it's Hatsune Miku?
And the answer is pretty easy, right?
It's because of their symbols.
So in Zelda, we see a winged woman with her hands clasped, perhaps holding a sword, perhaps wearing a winged crown or headdress or a crown of light, we know that's meant to be Hylia.
And when the Three Goddesses show up, the Triforce symbol is usually involved, or we see spheres or indistinct figures of gold rising upward, light trailing behind them, or we see three feminine figures dancing together, or we see their individual sigils, that sort of thing.
And then there's even the Heroines from botw/totk, who are all depicted with the same form and figure but who each have their own symbol.
And another thing is that MUSIC is very important to the way the goddesses come up; Zelda has her own song and Hylia's song is based on it. The dragonsong of botw and the way it distorts when one of the holy dragons is hurt. The songs Link has to play for puzzles, the holy songs that are the whole key to things.
Zelda as a franchise in general just really understands how much music is part of people, and it especially shines when gods enter the picture.
And idk, all things considered, the Hylian/Hyrulean religions are sort of scant, they're not usually heavily gone into, but what the games give us, I think they get right, and it's just kind of interesting to me from a worldbuilding perspective.
Especially since for my own fandom shit I'm perfectly happy to throw the whole ass thing into a blender with the concept of schisms and regional faiths and hit puree, lmao

Welcome to my Blog!
Thanks for being here! I'm going to start off this blog with a bit of info about me, my history with games, and my plans for this blog. Come in and see!
Meet The Blogger
You can call me Wham, I've been playing games since i was child with a Gameboy Advance and a well-loved copy of Pokemon crystal, but its really only in the last five years that I've come into any sort of gaming community and had the desire to explore gaming as a hobby and video games as an art form.
Let's start with the kind of games I've enjoyed (and you can check out my Backloggd link in my profile for more)
JRPGs are the big one, and a perennial favorite of mine. Heavy hitters here include the Final Fantasy franchise (X,XII, and XIV especially), the Xenoblade games (especially 3), and the Persona series. I'm currently trying to explore more series that I've missed over the years, like Star Ocean, Trails in the Sky, Tales of, etc.
Rougelikes! Not quite as much these days, but ever since The Binding of Isaac came out, I rode the wave of the indie roguelike scene for a good seven or eight years and have a deep love for where this genre has gone over the years. Notable games for me here are Isaac, FTL, Risk of Rain, Hades, Inscryption, and Darkest Dungeon.
Diablo-style loot RPGs, I've had a long history with these games starting back when I would play Diablo II LAN games with my friend and his dad back in middle school, and games like this have always had a soft spot in my heart. I spent years playing Path of Exile, and I routinely come back to games like Titan Quest and Grim Dawn as well.
Fighting games! This one is pretty new for me, back in 2020 one of my good friends decided he was gonna try to get into Street Fighter, and that caused a small revolution in my friend group that has led to me playing a whole hell of a lot of Guilty Gear Strive, Street Fighter 6, and other assorted games. I'm by no means good at them, but I've been committed to learning and improving at them bit by bit (you'll see in the weekly FGC Corner :) )
Visual Novels/Narrative Games. This one is very much a less cogent genre space, but some of my absolute favorite games can all be loosely put together around these terms. Games like 13 Sentinels, 999, Virtue's Last Reward, Umineko, Misericorde, Perfect Tides, things of that nature.
There are many others out there, so I'll end this section by listing off a bunch of other games that are classics for me: Outer Wilds, Neon White, Just Cause 2, Devil May Cry 5, Blasphemous, Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Elden Ring, Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Rimworld, Disco Elysium, Monster Hunter, and many many others!
The Big Idea
What I mostly want from this blog is to be a space where I can get together at the end of a week and think back about what I've been playing, what I think about it, and whatever else is connected to those feelings. Over the years I've enjoyed seeing other folks thinking and writing critically about the media that they enjoy, and while I hold no aspirations of turning this into anything quite as specific as that, I want to give myself space to spend more time thinking about this hobby which means so much to me. I have no idea how its going to go, if I'm going to like it, or how consistent I will be able to be, but for the time being this is my plan all laid out!
If you've read all this and it sounds interesting to you, or you think you might have tastes that align with mine, feel free to follow along! I'd love to have more people to talk shop with, or even just knowing that some other folks out there might think my words are interesting.
So let's get into it!

I remember hearing a lot of...many former Imperial citizens coming to Maginia, not just as explorers but as refugees too.
Junpei introduced me once before, but I’m Flemming Fisker. Back in the Empire, I studied and translated ancient literature for the sake of preservation and education, and in the last few years that the Empire was around, I travelled around the country collecting folk tales from all classes and backgrounds so that we could preserve some aspect of Asgardian culture, even after Asgard’s last generation had died. Old tales and stories are what my expertise is, hence why I chose such a focus...
I have two versions of my collection of tales: the original folk tales as they were told to me, and a...version that’s more friendly for children and sensitive folk in general. A lot of Imperial folk tales could get...a tad dark. It makes sense, given the harshness of our lives, but nonetheless it may not be palatable to everyone.
If you’re from the Empire and you have any folk tales or fairy tales that have been passed down to you, that you want to tell me for recording them for future generations, I’d love to hear them. My work is never done, after all. And if you grew up in Tharsis, I’ve found that with our common ancestry, their folk tales tend to be similar to ours, so I’d enjoy hearing Tharsian stories too. Junpei, Harlan, Annette, Havardr, and Logre have all been very helpful thus far, but again, more voices are always appreciated.

@bringbackgoth
Truly. Part of the problem is that it was a mature, hard-hitting JRPG about like. Genocide and racism with a lot of social commentary on the hideous nature of work/death camps and how The Powers That Be that allow these death camps to exist are rotten to the core (and this is like. Not even the first Tales game to touch it and Arise and a few others did it too) and it was on the GAMECUBE of all things. Like I know the Japanese release was on the PS2 but honestly I think it would have been better received on as a PS2 release here too considering the average Gamecube player was probably a little too young for such heavy topics.
It also has some similar plot elements to FFX which released a year earlier and I think some people thought it was a rip off of that. I actually played ToS first and then FFX a few years later and was like 'hey... this... that's just ToS' so that's fair that some folks weren't willing to give it a fair chance with a lot of the shared elements.
It's also an absurdly long campaign considering the main characters say 'this will be the final battle' and then SOMETHING ELSE happens and whoopsie we have 20 more hours of plot which I really liked as a kid but I know that can really hurt a game to say 'final battle' 10 hours in when the box says 80+ hours of gameplay. I think the shortest I've beaten it was 40 and that's doing absolutely no sidequests or grinding, just a race to the finish. My 100% play throughs are in the 100 range. Again not a lot of 11yos are going to be willing to sit that long through a heavy topic that takes its time telling the story, even though I thought it was done exceptionally well.

My dream RWBY videogames
Since asking everyone else about their dream RWBY games, I figured I'd have a go at it. With my dream games, barring one, I'd like for them to be standalone. Each game or game series would take place in its own universe but still retain common elements that make it RWBY, such as:
Huntsmen/Huntresses
Dust
Kingdoms/Academies
Aura/Semblances
Grimm
Teams
Though before carrying on with my dream games, there's a subgenre which I don't think would fit with RWBY and that is the SoulsBorne subgenre. Difficulty aside, the SoulsBorne games are all about slow and methodical gameplay and that doesn'f sit well with RWBY's faster, high energy combat style.
With that out of the way, let's get to it!!!
1. Bandai Namco
Series influence: Tales
Gameplay: Linear Motion Battle System
Story: Standalone AU
Bandai Namco's Tales series are pretty much just like playing a fantasy anime and the beautiful cutscenes by Ufotable enhance that experience even more. Imagine that? RWBY animated by UFOTABLE? That would be rad as hell!
In terms of gameplay, the Linear Motion Battle System is a signature to the Tales series and Berseria has my favourite version called the Liberation Variation. This means that the player is able to roam freely within the battlefield and each button can be assigned for a specific attack. The fast pace of battles fits right at home with RWBY and can make for some pretty fun combat.
2. Shift/Bandai Namco
Series influence: God Eater
Gameplay: God Eater System
Story: Standalone AU
God Eater's world could easily fit within Remnant. A group of young heroes battling monsters with crazy weapons and powers? Textbook RWBY! And once again, animations by Ufotable. Man, I love that studio!
The battle system has a feature where you can swap between melee, ranged and shield mode, which can be pretty handy and allows for a variety of different combos that you can use to defeat your enemies! The variety in Aragami can be an influence for the Grimm and the missions can be placed all over the various kingdoms, adding variety and exploration to the world of Remnant. You can't go wrong with God Eater, folks!
3. Square Enix
Series influence: Final Fantasy
Gameplay: Active Cross Battle System
Story: Standalone AU
I mean, RWBY was influenced by Final Fantasy and what better studio to tackle a JRPG-infuenced anime series than Square Enix themselves.
I LOVE Final Fantasy; the different worlds, the fun characters, the epic storylines and the variety in gameplay! It's just so awesome and Square Enix would have no trouble of making RWBY into an epic game. The gameplay style that I chose to go for was FFXV's Active Cross System, which focuses on real time combat, dodging, parrying and using the environment to your advantage. With some fine tuning and switch ups, such as swapping out weapon fighting styles instead of new weapons altogether, this could fit well with the cast of RWBY. Plus, the open world allows for tons of exploration, more so than God Eater, where you can take missions, go on hunts, search for upgrades, etc. The possibilities are pretty much endless.
4. Capcom
Series influence: Devil May Cry
Gameplay: DMC 5 style
Story: Canon STRQ prequel
A hack n' slash RWBY sounds like a no-brainer. Slicing up Grimm with style and savagery? Sign me up!!!
While more linear compared to the open worlds of both Final Fantasy and Tales of Berseria, the adrenaline pumping gameplay more than makes up for it. The style system ensures that players are able to keep on the offesensive, experiment with various weapon types (both melee and ranged) and increase their score ranks each time they encounter enemies. Compared to my previous dream games, this one would be more in line with the anime canon and would follow STRQ in the prime. Focusing on a group of adult Huntsmen can allow the writers to experiment with darker themes that wouldn't fit in the anime.
And those are some of my dream RWBY games. I'll be sure to make another list in the future and focus on how each story would be different from canon. Let me know what you think of my list and if you want to contribute with your own list, you're more than welcome to!

September 2021 popular new games recommend
New games are always hitting the shelves, and we make lists so you can keep up with what games you need to give your attention to this month. Hi folks, it's Falcon, and today on Gameranx, the games you should consider playing in September, 2021. Starting off at number 10, it's "Lost Judgment," the second in the Judgment series, itself is spinoff of the Yakuza series. Now, if you recall, I did the "Before You Buy" for the first "Judgment," and I really liked it. It took a lot of the best stuff from "Yakuza," built on it, and gave you a completely different perspective, and it looks like they're really trying to keep plowing ahead with that formula. For instance, they're keeping the combat, but expanding it, giving you more styles, maintaining Crane style and Tiger style. They've added Snake style, which is a counterattack-oriented style, and then is completely revamping the stealth segments, apparently giving you more to do during them, which is good because they were kind of the slower parts of the game. When I played "Judgment," I was like, this is really a winning formula. Did I think that it was so different from "Yakuza" that it departed? Not really, but I like that they're developing the little ideas they had to make it a different series, and it looks like they're really maintaining the tone well. "Lost Judgment" is landing on the PlayStations, the Xboxes, and it's landing September 24th. At number nine is "Conic Colors: Ultimate." Obviously, there has been a long time between the original game and this remaster, but because of how stylized and unique this game looks, seeing it in a higher resolution with various enhancements, it does not look like an old game. This might be a slightly controversial opinion. It's probably the best of the 3D Sonic games, and I cannot imagine a better one to remaster and bring to new platforms, particularly the Switch, where I will be playing it. They do actually add a new wisp to the game and a few extra features that were not there before, but mostly, this is just an incredibly solid 3D Sonic game that I am personally really excited to go through again. I also have my hopes that the upcoming Sonic game is a sequel to "Sonic Colors," and that's the reason they're doing this, but that's my own little conspiracy theory for a Sonic the Hedgehog for 2022. In the meantime, "Sonic Colors" is landing on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC through Epic Games, and Nintendo Switch on September 7th. At number eight is "Life is Strange: True Colors," the third mainline game in the Life is Strange series and one that uses the mechanics of the game to tell the story of Alex Chen, as she tries to figure out who killed her brother and why. Obviously, "Life is Strange" is a game about people with supernatural powers, and hers is that she can experience the emotions of others, and as you might expect, that would be an easy way to figure out if somebody is lying when you're questioning them about, you know, killing people, and it also features one of the characters from "Life is Strange: Before the Storm." The game takes place in Colorado, and while you're traipsing around there, using your turbo empathy to figure out who killed somebody, you can actually influence how other people think and feel, but it also comes at the cost of you being, quote, unquote, "infected" by their emotion. Now, I will say some of those story elements sound like they could be really over-the-top if done in a certain way, and I hope they aren't, because the series has always kind of bordered on that, but never really gotten too unbearable, and it always tells an interesting sci-fi story, and that's kind of my hopes for "True Colors." "Life is Strange: True Colors" is coming to the PlayStations, the Xbox Ones, Microsoft Windows, and Nintendo Switch on September 10th. At number seven is "Tales of Arise," the latest in the JRPG series. This is a game that's been in development for quite a while actually, and takes the series into the Unreal Engine, producing what we all think is a graphically pretty big jump. Yes, it does retain the look of the series, of course, but it just seems that the amount of time they had to work on their own engine versus making the game in Unreal freed them up or something, because it looks a lot better. "Arise" focuses on developing the combat system, which isn't fundamentally changed, but they did go back to "Tales of Graces" from 2009 for inspiration and lean the combat towards dodging and counterattacking. They also added a feature called Boost Strike. I don't know exactly how this stuff plays out. Obviously, I haven't played it yet, but it's all very interesting sounding, and so is the plot, where this game takes place in a world that is divided between a medieval world and a technologically advanced world. Tales is a great series, and I'm really excited to play the latest entry. It's coming to the PlayStations, the Xboxes, and Windows on September 10th. At number six is "Diablo II: Resurrected." And let me just go ahead and say how excited I am for this. It's not completely untempered excitement, but man, this looks good. It's mostly positive for me because you get absolutely all of the "Diablo II" and expansion content. You get it looking like this, which is way better than the original "Diablo." They have completely read on the game in 3D, and it looks amazing. All the effects, all the character models, all the animation, everything just looks amazing. There are a couple of quality-of-life improvements, too. Probably the one I'm most excited about is the new shared inventory feature, so you can move stuff between characters without long treks where you meet up with your characters or have a third character that you have specifically just for moving items. It's also the first time "Diablo II's" been on consoles, and I think it's probably gonna work out really well, because "Diablo III's" controller support was really good. I enjoy playing it the traditional way as well as on controller, so I kind am thinking this is going to work out basically like that. The only thing that some people are a little iffy about is that it really doesn't bring anything new to the table, other than, like I said, a few quality-of-life improvements. Yeah, they completely redid all of the cinematics from the ground up, but there isn't new content. Now, for me, I think that's good, but this is a contention within the community, and I wanted to acknowledge it, because sometimes, developers do go the extra mile and include some extra stuff, like there's a new wisp in "Sonic Colors: Ultimate," for instance. But for me, I'm just really glad that they are keeping the original game as is and giving it to us in the best possible graphical fidelity. I am so excited to play "Diablo II again." It's coming to the PlayStations, the Xboxes, Nintendo Switch, and PC on September 23rd. At number five is "Away: The Survival Series," and let me just go ahead and say this. This is something that's non-standard, something you probably aren't expecting to be a thing. It's a sugar glider game. You have to survive as a sugar glider, and honestly, it looks really interesting to me. It's kind of a strange concept, but it's really pretty, and there's enough interesting mechanics that sort of make being a sugar glider an interesting thing. You can climb trees. You can glide, of course. there's various senses and perceptual things that you can do. The only thing is, I would probably never go, oh man, want a game where I play as a sugar glider, but now that I see it, it is something I really want to play. "Away: The Survival Series" is coming to PC, PS4, and PS5 on September 28th. At number four is "Aragami 2," a third-person stealth game and the sequel to the 2016 PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch game, which is oriented towards stealth. Aragami, the titular ninja, can use shadow accents to teleport. And honestly, the original game is a really interesting title. I enjoyed it a lot. I had honestly forgotten about it, so when I saw they were making a sequel, I was pretty excited, This story involves sort of unraveling a mystery about the person who summoned you into existence. It's kinda convoluted, but it's also second fiddle to the mechanics, which is actually really good. I'm pretty confident that this will be a good sequel, and I'll be playing it when it lands on the PlayStations and the Xboxes, as well as PC, on September 17th. At number three is "Kena: Bridge of Spirits," a game that was originally actually teased as a PlayStation 5 title. It is also landing on PlayStation 4 and Windows, but I'm particularly excited to really see how it lands on PlayStation 5. It's kind of inspired by Zelda. The studio that made it specifically became known for a short film they made based on "Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask," and the world that they've developed for this game is absolutely beautiful. It obviously does actually contain a lot more detail than "Breath of the Wild," but you can also tell there is an element of influence there. The trick to making the combat unique to this game is that there are spirit companions, kind of familiar-type things if you're remember playing "Ni no Kuni" and how that plays out. It's obviously not turn-based. It is oriented towards an action-RPG-type thing. I am really excited for this game. It's one that I've been hoping is going to be very good. Obviously, we don't know, but it's always showed a lot of promise in my opinion, and I'll be playing it when it comes out, like I said, on the PlayStations and Microsoft Windows September 21st. At number two is "Hot Wheels Unleashed," a game that, actually, in my opinion, kind of came out of nowhere in terms of how exciting I think it looks. It seems like it's somewhere between "Mario Kart" and "Need for Speed," with the ability to make your own tracks, and that just honestly sounds like the recipe for something fantastic. I don't want to sit here and act like there's really a ton of details to discuss. I just get some old F-Zero-type, Mario Kart-type feel from it, but the cars also look a little bit more weighty, like a Need for Speed. The tracks, however, are so obviously inspired by "Mario Kart," and I'll be playing it. It's that simple. "Hot Wheels Unleashed" is coming to the PlayStations, the Xboxes, Nintendo Switch, and PC on September 30th. And finally, at number one, it's "Deathloop." "Deathloop" is a big one for me. I've been waiting for a new, full-on just Arkane game for a while. I'm a huge "Dishonored" fan, and while "Prey" is great, there's just something about the way "Dishonored" works out that I particularly like, and "Deathloop" looks more like a successor to that. The premise is that you are an assassin stuck in a time loop against another assassin stuck in a time loop, and basically, you fight each other, as well as take out people. The mechanics are very, very oriented around what makes Arkane good. There's stealth, there's parkour, there's lots of powers, and it also even features a multiplayer aspect, where you can go head to head as the assassin. "Deathloop" is landing on PlayStation 5 and Windows on September 14th. Also, roll up your sleeves. I got quite a few bonus games for you. First is "WRC 10," the World Rally Championship game, built on what they call a hyperrealistic and ultra-precise physics engine. That's landing on the PlayStations, Xboxes, and PC on September 2nd. "The Medium," that really intriguing, dual-world adventure game, where you have to solve puzzles in the spirit plane, as well as in the real plane at the same time, sort of assisting yourself. Then we've got "New World," which is an MMO from Amazon Games, a game that frankly has seen a little bit of controversy over its development cycle. It's one that's been delayed a times. It could in theory be pretty good. I don't know. There's been beta tests. I haven't played it, but it looks interesting. The graphics are good. That's landing on PC on the 28th. Next is "NBA 2K22," really an outstanding-looking entry into the series. In all seriousness, the NBA 2K games just keep getting more and more insanely realistic looking. That's landing on the PlayStations, the Xboxes, Nintendo Switch, and PC on September 10th. "Lost in Random," an action-adventure game coming from the EA Originals wing of EA, the sort of indie-scaled games. Seems like it's got a little bit of a sense of humor, too. Coming to the PlayStations, the Xboxes, Windows, and Nintendo Switch on September 10th. And finally, "Death Stranding: Director's Cut," which gives you a whole bunch of new features that might make the game better, might make the game worse. I don't know if that depends on perspective or really what's happening. It's one that I do want to play. I enjoyed the original version of it, and the PlayStation 5 is, of course, a great place for such an epic-scaled game. That's landing on September 24. And that's all for today. Leave us a comment. Do you have recommendations for low stress but still absorbing games? Think Harvest Moon for levels of optional combat and few high-pressure moments, but you can still get lost in it for a few hours. (My girlfriend’s new to games and has wrung every ounce of enjoyment possible out of Stardew Valley - I’m trying to think of where I could steer her next that’s not an atmospheric walking simulator or another farm sim)
Is there any specific reason you’re ruling out atmospheric walking simulators? If that’s her expressed preference, that’s well enough, but if you’re pre-emptively ruling them out of your own initiative because you don’t think they count as real games, I’m judging you so hard right now. =P
That said, in terms of titles with low-stress but mechanically involved gameplay that aren’t about growing vegetables, you could have a look at any of the following. I’m going to try and stay away from visual novels and point-and-click adventure games here, and I suspect that for your purposes they may fall prey to the same issue as atmospheric walking sims; i.e., not having much in the way of mechanical depth. Let me know if that’s a bad assumption on my part!
AER: Memories of Old - An open-world exploration game with light dungeon-crawling elements. You play as a woman who can transform into a bird exploring a world of floating islands. This one verges on “atmospheric walking simulator” territory, as the puzzle-filled dungeons are few and far between, leaving you to spend most of you play time just flying around seeing whatever there is to be seen, but there’s just enough dungeon-crawling action to keep it out of that bucket.
FAR: Lone Sails - This one might be described as a casual engineering sim. You play as an apocalypse survivor of indeterminate gender and species piloting a land-ship across a dry ocean bed in search of other survivors. At fixed intervals, you’ll disembark to solve puzzles to upgrade your vessel or clear obstacles. At first, the only challenge is keeping your ship fuelled; additional complexities such as repairing wear and tear, putting out engine fires, and so forth are introduced gradually so as not to overwhelm.
GRIS - Like AER, above, this one treads the line between a walking simulator and a puzzle-platformer, albeit with a stronger sense of progression; though the game is linear, there’s a Metroidvania-like upgrade system whereby you gradually gain more mobility options throughout the course of play. Occasional tense action sequences, though it isn’t possible to fail them or die – you get achievements if you get through them without getting hit, but play continues regardless.
Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale - A super-cute (and hilariously translated) game about a girl who’s been obliged to run an item shop to make ends meet after her father runs off to become an adventurer. Imagine a traditional JRPG where you’re the shopkeeper. There’s a stiff learning curve, but failing to hit your targets just time-loops you with no inventory loss, so you can keep trying until you get the hang of it. Dungeon crawling is present but – apart from one quest – optional during the main game, though it plays a bigger role in the postgame.
Regency Solitaire - Yeah, I know what you’re thinking, and I agree that most solitaire games are tedious shovelware, but this one’s the exception to the rule. The puzzles are engaging, well-crafted, and elaborated upon just enough not to overstay their welcome, and the story mode’s writing is exceptional for the genre. (The same folks later developed the same mechanics into a full-featured visual novel/RPG hybrid in the form of Shadowhand, but the latter is very combat-dense, so probably not the best choice here.)
RiME - Basically, if you the aesthetics of AER (above) grabbed you, but you’d prefer something with meatier gameplay, you could check out this one instead. It has much higher puzzle density, as well as occasional action sequences. (Though not combat as such – you’ll occasionally be menaced by monsters, but dealing with them involves avoiding, trapping or pacifying them, not straight up fighting them).
She Remembered Caterpillars - A self-described “fungipunk” logic puzzle game where you guide adorable little spore critters through a series of surreal environments using colour-matching to pass through various gates. Definitely the closest to being a pure puzzle game of anything on this list, though it also has a strong unfolding narrative to help sustain interest.
Yeah, I know that’s a little heavy on the puzzle games; low/no-combat casual simulations that aren’t at least partly about farming is a shamefully underserved genre in the English-speaking world, at least on the PC.
(In terms of upcoming titles, you could also keep an eye on Elsinore – a visual novel/adventure game hybrid about Ophelia Groundhog Day-ing her way through the plot of Hamlet, trying to find the perfect ending where nobody dies – and Mineko’s Night Market – a crafting/shopkeeping sim along largely the same lines as the previously plugged Recettear.)

And now for maybe the last one, Video Games!
10. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn (DS)
Golden Sun was my first fandom. To get a sequel after so many years made me ecstatic. It was a really solid game, that ended on a dang cliff-hanger. Not the worst I’ve been done by when it comes to game releases, but it’s close.
9. Soul Calibur IV (PS3)
Me and a housemate spent rather too much time on this when we lived together. We did manage to 100% it though. It remains one of the few true fighting games that I enjoy.
8. Europa Universalis IV (PC)
I like strategy games, and EU4 is one of the biggest of them all. It has the ‘one more turn’ draw that Civ has. It’s just a bit of a shame that new patches break old saves.
7. Tales of Xillia (PS3)
I’ve been interested in the Tales of games since Symphonia, but this was only the second one I actually bought. Considering you get the opportunity to play Maxwell, lord of the spirits, well I jumped at the chance.
It remains one of my favourite JRPGs out there.
6. Civilization V (PC)
That ‘one more turn’ feel? It’s addictive. I’ll admit, while it is a good game, the real joy comes from playing with user created civilizations. Where else can you have Holo duking it out with Remilia Scarlet, Elsa, Saber and Micaiah?
Or just throwing a load of Fire Emblem characters in together and creating a new story?
Again, I’ve spent far too much time on this game.
5. Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Switch)
For all that it has problems (NG+ fatigue), Three Houses remains an incredibly solid entry into the FE franchise. While I’ve not tried Maddening, it does seem a touch easy. The character writing is fantastic, and the gameplay is interesting.
4. Virtue’s Last Reward (3DS)
VLR was an even better successor than the original 999. It had interesting puzzles, a convoluted, but logical plot and fantastic characters. It also promised us the world with its sequel hooks that ZTD sadly failed to live up to.
Still, for folks who enjoy a good mystery plot, this is the place to come (after you’ve read Umineko).
3. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Wii)
I will preface this by saying that I came into RD as a series veteran, which I feel is the only way you should approach it. Unlike pretty much everything else on these lists, this is the only thing I’ll outright say play other, newer player friendly games first.
Sometimes RD was an exercise in frustration because I played on ‘Normal’ but that made beating it all the sweeter. Sadly, the game lacks any real supports, but aside from that, it is the best culmination of Fire Emblem at its release.
And despite a flaw of not explaining what you have to do properly, or rather because of that flaw, RD gave me the most memorable boss fight I’ve ever had. Outright disbelief and despair as Ashera resurrected each successive time and my resources dwindled. It really felt like I was trying to kill a god and I can’t think of another game that’s managed that.
2. Tales of Berseria (PS4)
I love my murder kitten by the name of Velvet Crowe. Never before or since have I met a character who has so pure a hate as that of Velvet Crowe’s for Artorius. To write that, well... let’s just say the writing is fantastic.
The gameplay is rather fun, though I did need to kick the difficulty up a couple of notches. I love all the characters, all their little interactions. Tales of Berseria is without a doubt my favourite Tales of game. Also you get a hoverboard. More games could do with having a hoverboard.
1. Nier: Automata (PS4)
I very much enjoy the weirdness of Yoko Taro games, combined with their ability to throw up moral questions to the player. Combine that with Platinum style combat and one of the video game soundtracks ever? You’ve got yourself a winner.
And a game that asks you question at the end that is truly meaningful.

Winter Anime 2019 Part 4: That’s all, folks.

Over already? This is a pretty thin season with not a lot of shows, so it’s not that surprising that there’s not many good ones either. Still, a weak showing. Oh well, let’s get it over with. There were a few decent ones in the last batch.
Circlet Princess

What: Dimwitted schoolgirl is good at some vaguely defined virtual fighting sport, changes school based on it, finds out relevant club has been abolished. Forecast says: 5 member plot incoming.
❌ I think it’s already clear this show isn’t very ambitious, and not very well written either. A game adaptation at its laziest.
❌ Man, this girl is STUPID. What the hell.
❌ The rest of the cast are less stupid (which isn’t hard), but that just means they’re so forgettable they might as well not exist.
❌❌ It looks cheap, and by that I mean really really cheap. The character design is ISO standard anime and it’s mostly on model, but that’s as good as it gets. The animation just sucks. That’s a death sentence for an action/sports show with terrible characters.
Bermuda Triangle - Colorful Pastrale

What: Japanese Spongebob, as in cute mermaids. Doing things optional.
❌ To make this quick, this is almost exactly Pastel Memories, only every problem is just a little less extreme. It has fewer characters, it’s looking slightly better, there’s a tiny bit more going on, the setting is mildly more interesting. That still means it is:
❌❌ 1. A boring mess in which a handful of samey girls do nothing of much interest in a location that should be unique, but isn’t.
❌❌ 2. Conspicuously cheap. It even has the same sightline problems.
❌❌ 3. Featuring a character model sheet that is “off” even under the best circumstances. This time due to the very offputting decision to give everyone blobby triangular irises.
❌❌ Unlike Pastel Memories (which was an ad for a mobile game) this is an anime original, so it really has no excuse being this lame.
♎ I find it amusing that Pastel Palettes are providing the OP for an anime, and it’s not the one currently airing that they’re actually characters in.
Endro~!

What: Kiraralike comedy thing in a generic JRPG setting.
♎ Namori character designs, so it’s like Spyce in that it just seems like the Yuru Yuri cast cosplaying a genre. But hey, Namori character designs do look good.
❌ I’m not as done with generic JRPG settings as with generic isekai settings, but it’s still a real problem since the former is now a subset of the latter. Mildly making fun of it does not improve things much either.
✅ The tone is cutesy and pleasant. I find this much preferable to something like Mahoujin Guru Guru, which is pretty much the same thing but with abrasive, high-intensity slapstick instead.
✅ It’s backing that up with generally high-quality, agreeable pastel looks.
❌ Not being annoying is a start, but beyond that this seems very middle of the road and predictable. I don’t get much out of the genre “parody” and simply being cute is still not an unique selling point in anime.
Grimms Notes The Animation

What: Did someone say JRPG? This is a mobile one, vaguely based on fairy tales as the title implies.
✅ This universe runs on the idea that every NPC’s fate is controlled by a preset story they’re aware of. You could make a good story about that if you took it seriously. It even does that somewhat, but only to the degree that you’d expect from a throwaway sidequest in a moderately well-written JRPG.
❌ And the reason for that is that it has to make room for being a JRPG, of course. Read: It’s irritatingly mechanics- and combat-focused. Stuff like the characters changing form when in fights just seems overly complicated and adds nothing.
❌ Said combat looks competent, but not good enough to make up for detracting from what could have been an interesting setting. Merc Storia did this aspect far better (by usually not doing it at all).
❌ So it ends up being better than expected, but then that only amounts to a disappointment.
Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai / Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

What: Kaguya and Miyuki are in the student council of a prestigious school and HATE HATE HATE each other. Specifically, they hate the part where the other one won’t just finally admit their love.
✅ The joke here is that it’s operating on full intensity at all times, over the most simple matters. It’s pretty much Kaiji, only about dating - complete with hammy narrator. This is another one of those shows where I can’t say with certainty that it’s solid, but I had a blast during the first episode.
✅ Regarding Quintuplets, I made it clear that I love me some sparks in my romantic comedies. It doesn’t get much more explosive than this.
✅ The characters are comparable to Quints too: Smart scheming upstart vs. rich scheming ojou, with a simpleminded girl in the middle that ends up winning more often than not simply by not overdoing it.
✅ The visuals are just as over the top as the proceedings depicted. Occasionally a filter massacre, but mostly cool.
♎ The long-term viability of this show depend entirely on whether they can consistently come up with scenarios that work, which isn’t a given. Also, this is so intense it might become tiresome - I already felt some fatigue towards the end of the first episode. We’ll see, I guess.
Kakegurui ××

What: Some weirdos think they can crash the party at Hyakkaou with an intent to scare the daylights out of Yumeko and Midari, of all people. Let’s just say they were not as prepared as they thought.
✅ As you might have guessed by me watching the sequel, I liked Kakegurui. It has its problems, but if you’re down for some crazypants madness, this show delivers.
✅ This is one of the better episodes of it too, because it gets right into it and the game they play is dead simple. Kakegurui was never about smart moves or strong characters, so not having anything detract from our girls deriving the entirely wrong sort of pleasure from danger is a plus.
♎ Sadly, the OP is a step down (though still great) and the ED is simply an inferior, overcomplicated version of the magnificent original one. They seem to know this too, because they play the OP cut of Deal with the Devil in its entirety for a montage. The rest of the production is on par with the original though, so it’s fiiiine. Oh well.
❌ It got Netflix’d again and the subs situation is dire. Since this is one I actually like, I might have to wait for the official release.
Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai / The Magnificent Kotobuki

What: Piston-engined fighter plane pornography.
✅ This delivers where Girly Air Force failed: Close to zero exposition, the majority of the episode is just planes dogfighting with barely any talking either. And that part is executed really well. I think the plane startup sequence alone is as long as the total of Girly’s airtime.
✅ Guess what, it’s Tsutomu Mizushima, previously known for unbridled panzer (und girls) pornography, and boy can you tell. However, this cuts out a lot of GuP’s bullshit: A plane doesn’t have the cast of K-ON in it, it’s not over-the-top zany, and whatever this universe is, it can’t be as insipid as GuP’s. The classy milwank exists you guys, we found it.
✅✅ The music really helps here, sky pirates vs zeppelins just wouldn’t work without some classic swashbuckling orchestra background. Fat sound mixing on the dakka too. It’s great.
♎ Can’t really say much about the narrative because we kinda skipped that in this episode aside from the obvious, but Mizushima’s Shirobako collaborator Michiko Yokote is writing it, and that’s a good sign.
❌ Now we’re getting to the elephant in the room though: There’s no way the planes wouldn’t be CG in 2019, but the characters are CG too, and their animation is mediocre. Also, they did the KADO thing where they 2D-animated the side characters that aren’t important enough to model. This has the funny side effect that you can tell who’s going to die real soon by them looking better. It’s far from great, but probably a worthy tradeoff if the mechanical side is this extensive and also delivers.
✅ This is definitely not for everyone, since you have to have more than a casual appreciation for those magnificent girls in their flying machines. I do, though.
revisions

What: A chunk of Shibuya gets teleported to the dystopian future, local doomsday prepper gets handed a large robot because he’s special.
❌ A Goro Taniguchi joint being a poorly conceived scifi mess? Say it ain’t so! I especially dig the tryhard English jargon (mecha: “String Puppet”, monsters faction: “Revisions”, particular monster, I think?: “Civilian”, tacticool operetah: “Balancer”).
❌ Works very hard to characterize the main character, to the detriment of everyone else. A for effort, but you made an unlikeable asshole though.
❌ This is another full CG show, with the quality of the animation being curiously variable. Sometimes it’s well above average and sometimes it’s painful. There doesn’t seem to be much method to it.
✅ Tries to establish stakes by being mondo edgy and graphically murderizing some poor bystanders. It’s adorable.
❌ If you’re really jonesing for some mecha, you can watch all of this on Netflix right now. It’s not like you have any alte- wait, Egao no Daika has mecha too. Well there you go then. That’s a better show.

My top-10 games of 2018

It’s that time of the year where you are flooded with lists of the best stuff from 2018 and I’m no different. Originally I was going to just make a list of the top 10 games I played in 2018. I even had a giant list I was updating throughout the year. But one day my phone randomly reset and I lost that list. So, business as usual this year. Maybe next year.
Before I start with the numbered list, I’d like to note a couple of games that won’t be appearing for various reasons.
Games I liked a lot but haven’t played enough of to place on a list like this: Into the Breach, Dead Cells
A critically acclaimed game I haven’t played: God of War
I don’t want remakes on my list, but these games were really good: Shadow of the Colossus, Yakuza Kiwami 2 and Spyro Reignited Trilogy
Ports aren’t eligible but I like these a lot too: Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Shenmue 1&2, Hyrule Warriors and the PC port of one of the best games ever, Yakuza 0.
Okay, let’s get started.
10-) Red Dead Redemption 2: Actually had to debate between this and Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu for this spot. Ultimately I chose this game because the narrative is spectacular. Well that and the fact that Let’s Go is sort of a remake. This game absolutely nails atmospheric storytelling and creates one of the most interesting protagonists in AAA gaming. This game does a lot of things well, but the actual gameplay portion is...pretty mixed. I didn’t have fun with the open world at all and most missions involved long bouts of horseback riding with dialogue or ambient music. But RDR 2 does everything else so well. It also knows when to go all out. Every major mission in the game is memorable for one reason or another, especially with intelligent usage of music. It’s a game I will never play again, but despite some problems with the gameplay I can safely say that I enjoyed my time with it.
9-) Mario Tennis Aces: This game was a lot of fun. I wrote about it earlier in the year and my opinions on it are still the same. Even though the gameplay is fairly simplistic, every match against another human felt unique and different. You have to learn the styles of your opposition and adapt. It’s like a fighting game! The online gameplay was also pretty solid. I felt pretty damn good whenever I would win a tournament. Really, Smash Bros. Ultimate would have done well to borrow this mechanic in some way. The only real problem with the game is that there is just a major lack of content. The heavily advertised story mode is barely worth playing and the cups, well, you might as well be playing against an unmanned player 2. I haven’t touched the game in a while, so this might have been fixed via update. As I said a few months ago, this game could have been a masterpiece with a bit of extra fine tuning.

8-) Dragon Ball Fighter Z: This game feels like it was made specifically for me. I have a lot of love for the Marvel vs. Capcom games and even more love for the Dragon Ball franchise. The game is easy to approach for newcomers to this type of game by keeping the inputs simple and having very easy to pull of auto-combos. You won’t do too well online if you stick to the auto combos, but it’s a good way to start and learn how to play. I think a lot of people could start with Fighter Z and transition into more complicated fighting games, which is exactly what you want with a game like this that will attract many people who might not otherwise play a traditional fighter. Oh, and sometimes it looks like you’re playing an episode of the anime which is insane. The story mode is pretty tedious at times, which is a let down, but Fighter Z is an absolute blast to play and is easily the best playing Dragon Ball game yet. Hopefully season 2 of the DLC goes less heavy on all the Gokus.
7-) Mega Man 11: The blue bomber returns! It’s been a long wait, but after playing through both collections last year and then the X-collection earlier this year, I was ready for Mega Man to get back into the spotlight. It’s a little hard to get into at first because the level design seems pretty tied into the main new mechanic, the gear system. Basically the player can slow things down to a crawl or boost Mega Man’s power. If you just play this game like you would any other Mega Man game, you’re probably going to throw your console out the window during Tiki Man’s stage. Once you figure this out, the system adds a unique flavor to the Mega Man experience and feels like an actual new Mega Man. I love MM9 and 10, but those did not feel like new games. The only thing that I didn’t like about this game was the music. Which, uh, is weird for a Mega Man game. Here’s hoping they get it right in the inevitable Mega Man X9.
6-) Marvel’s Spider-Man: I don’t particularly like super hero movies and I haven’t enjoyed a Spider-Man game thoroughly since the first PS1 Spider-Man, so you wouldn’t normally think this game would appeal to me. But it absolutely does. The gameplay is outstanding and combines an improved version of the swinging scene in Spider-Man 2 with a combat system that is fairly similar to the Batman Arkham games. I recommend playing the game on hard because, while it’s hard to get used to, it makes every encounter feel unique. You constantly have to adapt to what the enemy is doing. You can’t just mash on the attack button and then press the dodge button when the dodge prompt comes up.
The story is also interesting throughout. It has my favorite interpretation of Peter Parker I’ve seen in a while and has a pretty enjoyable cast of characters. Really Mary Jane is the only character I didn’t like and even with her, there are moments that hit home - specifically the text exchanges between MJ and Peter. The game is littered with references to past Spidey adventures and just feels like a giant love letter to fans of the hero. Can’t recommend it enough.

5-) Celeste: I didn’t know what to expect with this game. Sometimes I feel very leery of when a bunch of people prop up an indy game too much. Gone Home a couple of years ago told a pretty mediocre story that was held up as some form of high art. Just didn’t get it. So I went into Celeste wanting to not like it and came out fairly surprised. The gameplay feels like a better version of Super Meat Boy and the narrative tells a pretty compelling tale about depression and how to come to terms with yourself. I even don’t mind the pixel art. I am getting sick of indy games going for the retro aesthetic, but when combined with the great soundtrack it’s hard not to love what it’s presenting.
The game is simple enough to complete on its own. I would argue that anybody could do it as long as they keep at it. But for those platforming veterans, the game also offers a heavy challenge. The B-side and C-side levels will test your skills and remind you of some of the most challenging bits of hard platforming games like Super Meat Boy and I Wanna Be The Guy. Basically, come for the compelling narrative. Stay for the wickedly difficult and addicting gameplay.
4-) Yakuza 6: I believe I enjoyed this game far more than most folks. It told the end of Kazuma Kiryu’s story. It had some problems along the way but my god did I enjoy the ride. The cast of characters surrounding Kiryu in Hiroshima are all great and one of the main characters is Beat Takeshi. It also has a ton of things to do and see. I love the clan wars sidequest featuring New Japan wrestlers, I love the baseball manager quest, I LOVED becoming a regular at a bar and getting to know everyone in it like I was playing some sort of weird Cheers game, I even loved the adult cam chats that came with wacky dialogue. This game is full of charm.
I haven’t mentioned the gameplay yet you might have noticed. That’s because, well, it’s a new direction for the franchise. It focuses on allowing more people to fight Kiryu at once and as a result feels less refined than recent entries Yakuza 0 and Yakuza 5. I am excited to see where they take it in Yakuza 7, but I would be fibbing if I suggested that I felt 6 plays as well as previous entries. Still, the entire Yakuza package is compelling and I never felt like I was scrambling for things to do or see. I don’t 100% games out of obligation. I’m not one of those people that feels the need to 100% every game I play. I 100%ed Yakuza 6 though. And I loved every minute of it, combat and all.

3-) Valkyria Chronicles 4: As none of you might know, I used to review games for a website called 411mania. One of the games I reviewed for them was the original Valkyria Chronicles. Nobody else wanted to do it because it looked like a generic jRPG and I was really the only person on the site who liked jRPGs so the game fell to me. And I absolutely loved it. The story was captivating, the graphics were stylish and and the gameplay felt like a breath of fresh air. It was the combination of a tactical RPG and a (very, very simplified) shooter. To this day it remains one of my favorite games ever. Conversely, Valkyria Chronicles 2 on the PSP is one of my least favorite games ever and 3 never came to the states - though it does have a fan translation. The franchise has felt dead in the west for ages. The musou-like Azure Revolution sure as fuck didn’t get me going.
4 came out this year and it felt like I went back in time. Everything I loved about 1 was back. It’s even expanded upon. The grenadier is a great new troop that feels overpowered at first, but really forces the player to rethink how to approach certain situations. The story isn’t as good as the story in 1, but I found it simple and enjoyable. I genuinely liked the main cast and wanted to see them do well. That’s more than I can say for a lot of games. I know I mentioned earlier in my blurb about Mega Man that what I liked about it was that it actually felt like a new game. The difference here is that I have 10 other Mega Man games that play like Mega Man games. With this franchise, I have 1 (or maybe 2, I hate how maps work on the PSP but I have not played enough of 3 to judge). Sometimes a franchise revival needs to go “like the one you like but more” route. I loved this game and I hope as it gets cheaper more people try it.
2-) Dragon Quest XI: Hey you might notice this about my gaming preferences, but I really enjoy Japanese RPGs! And this sure as hell was one of those! DQ XI felt like a game from another dimension in a lot of ways. It’s a traditional playing Japanese RPG with a big AAA budget. It looks breathtaking. Big budget JRPGs feel like something out of the PS2 era, which is great because I sure love PS2 era RPGs. It’s lengthy, it has a crazy amount of postgame content and has a lot of side stuff in case you get tired of fighting down the main path. It’s a great throwback.
This game also has the most balanced party in recent RPG memory. Usually games like these have one or two party members that you just don’t enjoy. For instance, Final Fantasy X is one of my favorite games ever. But I just don’t like Kimahri. I don’t like using him and I don’t think his character is interesting. DQ XI has nobody like that. I found everybody likable. Sylvando and Jade in particular stand out and are among my favorite characters in gaming. Really, I enjoy everything about this game. Even the music! I know a lot of people complain about the simplified score in the western version, but I honestly found it to work out pretty well for the game. Obviously the Japanese version is superior, but I still enjoy it. If you’re a fan of RPGs and you haven’t played DQ XI, you’re missing out.

1-) Super Smash Brothers Ultimate: This was my most anticipated game of 2018 from the moment it was announced and the final product delivered everything that I had hoped it would. You have a large cast of characters, a crazy number of stages and a bunch of single player content to consume in between bouts of online or local multiplayer. The single player is what ranks this game so high for me. The classic mode - think arcade mode in standard fighters - is easily the best it has ever been. Each character has their own route with their own gimmick, which gives the player incentive to play each and every one. With a roster of over 70 fighters, that’s impressive. The adventure mode can start off slow, but once you get into the groove of it I really think it stands out as something special. It’s an expanded version of event battles from past games. You face off against a fighter (or fighters) embodying the personality of a character that isn’t in the game. They range from obscure stuff you haven’t heard of to a fight with Geno’s spirit that has you do battle with the cast of Super Mario RPG (with substitutes for Geno and Mallow). It feels very creative. It can be grindy for some, but I really enjoyed my time with it.
I think the online could be more fleshed out. I don’t experience as many laggy matches as most people, but even still the options online are fairly bare bones. You don’t even have leaderboards. I want to compare how good I am with how good my friends are! I think Nintendo plans to keep this game alive for the duration of the Switch’s lifespan, so I believe there will be plenty of time to get the online situation perfect. That doesn’t really excuse Nintendo from still not getting online even close to right in 2018, but I find Ultimate to be such a complete package that I can look past these shortcomings. Ultimately, it is my favorite entry in one of my favorite franchises. So it’s pretty easily my game of the year.

Spooky Szn part 6 & 7 & 8
It’s halloween! I like halloween, I like jack-o’-lanterns, orange is my favorite color, fall is my favorite season and skellies are surpsingly fun. Did you know there’s a nearby skelly next to you?
Without further ado let’s get it on!
Ghost Trick: The Phantom Detective in my opinion is the greatest fiction ever written till this day by human kind. Please play it or watch this silent playthrough like I did; I want you to experience Ghost Trick, you need to FEEL what this game has to offer you, from music to story. It’s a fantastic journey and I loved it.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors I had this one in my mind ever since I wrote about the Wizard of Oz game. Banger soundtrack. A Twin stick shooter with lots of personality. Another one that I had in my childhood and never got to finish due to how difficult it is.
The game is surprisingly scary at some points even when most parts of the game it’s goofy as well.
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse The Shin Megami Tensei series are in my opinion the ultimate halloween games. Pure folklore till the bones. You get myths, tales, legends from a LOT of cultures throghout centuries of human kind telling. Not every folklore made into the game though. There’s a bunch of Brazillian folklore there’s still not present, even in the latest installments of the series. It’s okay, one day it’ll come. Oh this one is a JRPG.
The story is fun and the music is fantastic. It’s so fun fusing demons I lost track how many hours I spent. Love it.
And that’s it folks! I hope someone ends up trying any of these I posted today or the ones I posted other days as well. Chances are slim and hope is the last one to die. Have a good one and thanks for reading. Have an amazing week.

Intro from your lovely DM! My history with D&D:
Hi friends! I have decided to start a blog documenting my experiences as a DM running Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. I actually haven't been a tabletop gamer for very long, but D&D has been something of which I have been aware for a long time.
I think I've always been into the fantasy genre, going back to a love of fairy tales and mythology from a very early age. I liked being read to and learning to read came just as naturally to me as a result. My dad also had an ongoing series of stories about Prince Garbanzo and Princess Goldie-lips that he'd improv for my siblings and me as bedtime stories. As a young gay child, princesses and mermaids in particular always caught my interest. I remember attending renaissance faires and coming home with wooden swords and shields - no princess hats, but that would have been THE LOOK at 5 years old for sure.
My history with role playing started with console JRPGs. These of course owe a lot to D&D when it comes to monsters, settings and other genre conventions we assume have just always been there. The original Legend of Zelda is the first RPG I can remember watching someone else play. Final Fantasy IV was the first I played on my own, back when it was called Final Fantasy II and fans in the US weren't even aware there were two games in between that (at the time) were destined to languish in Japan. Several more games would follow, many still retaining those D&D roots of which I was at the time unaware.
Shortly thereafter, my sister had a high school boyfriend who gave me several books in the Dragonlance series. This was my first true exposure to Dungeons and Dragons. I tore through these novels under the age of 10 - some of the content admittedly went over my head (probably for the best), but I read them cover to cover. I also remember reading The Hobbit around this time - I even did a book report about it!
I don't think I necessarily made the connection that the Dragonlance novels were based on an actual game until around the time Eye of the Beholder was ported from PC to current consoles of the time. I distinctly remember renting the SNES version and would later go on to own the Sega CD port. Video game magazines gave me some familiarity with the rules and monsters, but overall they were more cool games to play, nothing I wanted to research further than that. At some point I also rented the NES Dragonlance game, but that one's also notoriously crappy. Perhaps the less said about it, the better.
The Capcom D&D arcade games, probably the furthest from playing traditional D&D, were what really piqued my interest in the tabletop game from which all these video game spinoffs derived. Among other things, they included a mechanic that sort of emulated rolling dice to make a saving throw - you had to move the joystick back and forth to get out of various status effects. For whatever reason, this stuck with me. The inclusion of several iconic monsters and spells probably didn't hurt. I was sold on all of it!
After having played a few video games using D&D rules (or at least the settings), I finally decided it was time to give playing the real thing a try. My mom wasn't about to take me to some hobby store to play with a bunch of old grognards - nor did I even know that was an option at the time! Instead, I was allowed to order my first D&D module - Menzoberranzan. I don't think I had any sort of description of what I was ordering other than it being a D&D product - I was going in practically blind. Without any other manuals and just what we knew from the various games we'd played, my brother and I guessed our way through, mostly just throwing random dice around and deciding arbitrarily whether or not we'd killed one of the many drow provided in the modules. Despite a ton of interesting setting information, we both lost interest pretty quickly. Menzoberranzan was either given away during a move to a new house or lost in a flood. We resumed playing the occasional D&D video game, eventually having our options widened through both emulation and PC gaming.
As I got older, I made more friends with similar interests. Some of them had played actual D&D (2E) campaigns - I was so jealous! I managed to rope one friend into acting as DM for me and another friend. We made it through about one session during a lunchtime period at school. I don't recall doing much in the way of rolling dice or anything one typically associates with playing a tabletop RPG. It's probably for the best that it didn't pan out. The DM loved pulling dick moves on PCs and had an arsenal of DMPCs to get out of any and every jam, all of whom were ostensibly cooler and more competent than either of us players could possibly muster. I don't think dealing with any of that at length would have left me with a very good impression of the game.
The release of the third edition of D&D was an exciting time! I ended up picking up the player's manual, DM guide, and monster manual. Later on I even got the Complete Psionics. I would use these to formulate several characters and come up with all sorts of cool ideas in my head, but none of it ever translated into a regular game. At the time I certainly didn't feel confident enough to act as a DM, especially with a system as rule-heavy and numbers-heavy as 3E tended to be. There was also a brief attempt to get a game of Vampire: The Masquerade going in high school, but again it never really got off the ground.
Tabletop gaming fell off the radar for me for many years following that. I was aware of the 4th edition release, but unsure of what to make of it and not really willing to spend my money on a whole new set of manuals. It was a drastic change, to be sure, and I was probably more focused on dudes or partying or clothing. Every now and then, I'd get curious about a particular setting's lore and read up on that, but it wouldn't ever get further than that. I even went so far as to download a Pathfinder app that contained a huge amount of compiled information - being close in spirit to 3E didn't hurt!
It wouldn't be until a friend from Tumblr started doing artwork for the campaign he was running that my interest was again sparked in actually playing a sit-down game of D&D. I knew bits and pieces about the newest edition and it all sounded good to me. The party needed an arcane caster, I chose a Warlock, and I was immediately hooked. What really sealed the deal was having both an accommodating, engaging DM in addition to a great group of players. Over the course of about a year, we played through Lost Mine of Phandelver, adding lots of our own personal touches to the material through our characters.
What followed were some attempts at new 5E games, unfortunately hampered by the scheduling conflicts that often arise when you're trying to get 5-6 20-40somethings with jobs living in different boroughs of NYC to appear at the same place at the same time. Some folks moved away, some got bogged down in personal life stuff, but I never lost interest. If anything it made me more determined to get the right crew together for a really great campaign.
I am currently part of a mostly homebrew 5e campaign on hiatus best described as a mix of both Avatar series, Steven Universe, and a lot of interesting parallels to the currently running Not Another D&D Podcast (which I highly recommend btw). Kevin has been a great DM and we often spitball ideas that eventually make it into the campaign off each other.
During downtime from my main 5e game (we typically play about once a month and are currently taking a longer break), I started looking into Adventurer's League games for Kevin and I to try to give us both more opportunities to try different characters (and in Kevin's case, not being stuck as DM!). That didn't quite pan out, but in my search I DID randomly find a tabletop gaming channel on Slack at my job. I found a few mentions of D&D and decided to throw my hat in the ring with helping to organize a game. This was interpreted as me volunteering to be DM.
Honestly, I'd never considered it before and was a bit intimidated by the prospect. After stewing over it for a bit, however, I realized I could run Lost Mine of Phandelver, having familiarity with the material as a player. Once I had the books in my hands and the planning started, it all sort of clicked. Using tips from my friends who'd run games before and a variety of resources available online, I've gotten really into the whole process!
So that leads us to where we are now. In about a week, I'll be meeting with my players (2 experienced, 3 totally new to D&D) for session 0 to go over rules, expectations, and character creation. Coming up with characters is one of my favorite parts, so I'm very excited! I'll be using this space to discuss my own experiences running games, resources I enjoy, and other aspects of tabletop gaming. There's plenty more to come!

Would you mind sharing what other games you have on your steam wishlist? I am always looking for new interesting games. =]
Sure! Though I have to point out that since they’re on my wish list, I’ve not tried them. In many cases, I barely know anything about them other than “Hm, this looks interesting to me right now in this moment!” I can’t vouch for anything beyond it catching my attention at the time I added it. BUT LET’S SEE. Games in the order they currently are on my wish list.
Puzzle Quest. I played this a bunch on the 360 but it’s not on sale, it’s never on sale, please go on sale one day.
The Amber Throne. I can’t remember anything about this.
Tales from the Borderlands. I really like Telltale Games.
Game of Thrones - A Telltale Game Series. See above.
ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery) ???
Tyranny. An RPG by Obsidian (Pillars of Eternity) where you play the side of evil and fight good. I’ve really wanted this one for a while now, I may finally pull the trigger.
Valley. Dunno!
Thea: The Awakening. No clue!
Firewatch. Another I’ve been really interested in for a while. Story and mystery-heavy where you’re a ranger in Wyoming with only the person on the other end of your radio to help you. I’ve been considering suggesting this for a the Life is Strange replacement.
Master of Orion. We had this a million years ago and Hubby seems to feel certain I liked it, so okay, onto the wish list you go.
Novus Inceptio. YOU SURE HAVE A FANCY NAME FRIEND. Completely can’t remember what you’re about.
Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! Okay I fucking loved the first Cook Serve Delicious and I don’t even care. I’ve had the sequel on my wish list for like eighteen months and one day, ONE DAY, it will be released and mine.
Planetbase. I like space games, I dunno guys.
Project Highrise. I’m guessing this is a Sim Tower kind of thing. I also really like building and strategy games and shit and regret nothing.
Divinity: Original Sin 2. I can’t remember what this is, but I crack up whenever games have seemingly contradictory name elements such as “original’ and “2″.
LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens. You will pry the LEGO games from my cold dead fingers.
Windward. I think this is a pirate kind of game maybe? Man, I loved Sid Meyer’s Pirates!.
Renowned Explorers: International Society. I hope the game is good enough to support the pomposity of its title.
The Witness. Shiny and chrome? Look I can’t remember what any of this shit is.
Dead Man’s Draw. A card game. That’s all I got. Steam has it for $3.49 right now though, so I mean, damn.
Starbound. DID I MENTION I LIKE GAMES IN SPACE
Folk Tale. I think this is some anthropomorphic RPG?
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. A JRPG, I think, and I seem to remember it being really well loved in the reviews, but I can’t remember anything else.
Rocket League. Soccer, with race car dune buggy things. ACTUALLY SUPER FUN. I played Hubby’s a lot and just never got around to buying it for me.
Child of Light. SHRUG
Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville. I think this is a town-builder with a zombie twist? I like that shit, too.
Epic Battle Fantasy 4. I think this is one of those deeply indy games made with Game Maker Studio or something. Also super cheap at $3.49 right now.
Armello. Your guess is as good as mine.
XCOM 2. Looooved the first XCOM. Fucking love grid-based strategy games. All of my characters were, of course, Senshi. One day, they’ll lower this to the price I want to pay for it.
No Man’s Sky. The hype train kind of killed this before it could even get started, I think, but I still love the concept. As with above, one day they’ll drop it to the price I’m willing to pay.
The Banner Saga 2. Another grid turn-based strategy game with gorgeous animation and a Norse-themed story with death and sadness everywhere. I love the first Banner Saga, even as I never finished it. ONE DAY.
Stellaris. More space shit I think.
Dog Sled Saga. IT’S CALLED “DOG SLED SAGA” COME ON.
Stories: The Path of Destines. No idea, but I love the title.
If you (anyone) picks up something based on it being on this list, let me know! I’m exactly that egotistical enough that I’d want to take some measure of credit.

in 6th grade in French class we read a Russian folk tale called “Les oies sauvages” which translates to “The wild geese” (but for some reason in English translations the story’s called “The Magic Swan Geese”) and ever since then I’ve always thought a “Savage goose” or even to some extent “Wild goose” would make for a good name of an rpg enemy, my favorite monsters in jrpgs are ones that are references to mythology/folklore of various culture, the Castlevania games also do this

Well folks, this wasn’t going to be a very meaty Nintendo Download, but then Nintendo unveiled a surprise Direct Mini this morning! While our site has covered the latest news about Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition already (shocker, I know), there were other games announced. And while I won’t cover them all in depth, let’s gloss over the highlights.
2K is bringing a bunch of series to Switch, including Bioshock, Borderlands and XCOM. I was happy to see a new expansion for Marvel Ultimate Alliance: The Black Order. It’s called Shadow of Doom, and as a comic fanboy, that can only mean one thing – Fantastic Four! I was happy to see their emerald nemesis Doctor Doom looking totally bad-ass in the trailer, and it gives me plenty of incentive to start playing my own copy of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. One surprise was Shinsekai: Into the Depths, a promising looking aquatic platformer with underwater monsters that’s out today. Animal Crossing fans got news about a new update that will make New Horizons more Easter-y than usual.
Atlus is also bringing the sexy madness of Catherine to Switch with Catherine: Full Body. And though I’m not that invested in it, Ring Fit Adventure is getting a free update which adds rhythm game mode. It lets you play to the music from several classic Nintendo series. Then a tactical game called King’s Bounty II was shown off, and it looked like a fun medieval romp. My ears perked up when I heard that Smash Ultimate is getting new DLC this June, and it’s going to be an ARMS fighter. Adding to the ARMS news, those who have Nintendo Switch Online will be able to try the full ARMS game for free from 3/26 – 4/6. Fans of more old school games might be excited about Club House Games: Worldwide Classics, which has some 51 games, such as Chess, Mahjong and much more, along with inexplicable touch controls.
Then cool looking free to play bubblegum Ninja game, called Ninjala, finally got a May 27th release date. Panzer Dragoon Remake was looking great, and it’s out today. And the Mini had a montage of upcoming games. Perhaps the most exciting news to come out of the Mini, at least for me, were the following. Sword and Shield had more news for the upcoming June Isle of Armor update, which hits at the end of June. But most exciting was the reveal of Bravely Default II. It has the same look and style of the first two games, just with a bit more flash and panache. As a fan of the Bravely titles, that’s really fantastic news, as is the fact it has a free demo today! Whew, that was a big info drop. Let’s continue this Nintendo Download with your regularly scheduled coverage.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The only featured title for today’s Nintendo Download involves a certain stretchable pirate. That game is ONE PIECE: PIRATE WARRIORS 4. If you’re a fan of crazy abilities and flashy anime style, then you will want to check the game out when it’s officially out tomorrow. Next up, let’s check out some sales courtesy of the Game Guide.
If you want to play a retro romp with a strange style, try Dogurai for $2.49; to try something different, there’s Dezatopia for $16.99; for a frenetic SHMUP, look no further than UBERMOSH:OMEGA for only $0.99; for a duo of titles, try Indie Gems Bundle – JRPG Edition for $9.99; to beat up some thugs, try River City Girls for $20.99; for colorful strategy, try Chroma Squad for $9.99; to take a gamble, try Super Weekend Mode for $3.49; for rogue fun, try Tangledeep for $9.99; to enjoy a nice discount, there’s My Brother Rabbit for only $1.49; for mayhem with lots of challenge, try Hyper Light Drifter – Special Edition for $9.99; for platforming in space, try Flinthook for $8.99; and lastly, to help a maiden win the day, try Blossom Tales for $7.49. To see all the other discounted Switch games, just click here.
The following digital titles are out for next week’s Nintendo Download. Fans of dungeon crawling might appreciate Operencia: The Stolen Sun. Those that love retro platforming might like Stones of the Revenant. And lastly, for a double dose of nostalgia, look no further than Bubble Bobble 4 Friends!
Next, let’s check out some digital games for this week’s Nintendo Download. For your retro fix, try the following – Ara Fell: Enhanced Edition or Duck Souls+. For those that love bang for your buck, try the Card Game Bundle Vol. 1 or Indie Darling Bundle Vol 2. Fans of puzzles might appreciate CopperBell, Mekorama and NecroWorm. For something violently different, try Repressed. To beat up some fighters, try CHAOS CODE -NEW SIGN OF CATASTROPHE-. RPG fans have some incredible offerings – Children of Zodiarcs, Grand Guilds and Sin Slayers. And lastly, for a genre bending title, try One Step From Eden.
All in all, a much more exciting Nintendo Download than I was expecting. Thanks as always for joining oprainfall for your weekly Nintendo Download, stay safe and be sure to tune in next week.
