Poison, bane, toxin. These are all warning labels that tell us to stay away. But for those brave, or reckless enough to take a closer look, there is more to be discovered. What is it about poison that fascinates and seduces some, while terrifying and repelling others? These potent substances have been used for medicine, murder and mind-altering effects for millennia. Poison is a universal concept and humans have had many beliefs regarding how it worked and how to protect against it. Poison, as a metaphor has been used to describe things like love and knowledge, or toxic situations and people. There is much more to the nature of poison than it being deadly and to avoid it. It is part of our most ancient history and looking into the past about beliefs regarding poison, contagion and death give us clues to the unseen nature of this force. #thepoisonpathherbal #thepoisonpath #poisonpath #veneficium #pharmakeia #occultherbalism #toxicology #ethnobotany #ethnopharmacology #botanicaltoxins #poisonmagic #flyingointments #greenwitchcraft #nightshades #solanaceae #entheogens #ethnobotanicals #witchcraft https://www.instagram.com/p/Co95meLrWfn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Poison Path Witchcraft In the biblical verse “thou shalt not suffer a witch to live,” the word given for witch is “venefica”- a term that is now understood to more closely translate as “poisoner.” When looking at a medicinal understanding of poisonous plants, we can see that within the toxic cocktail of compounds contained within them, there lies the capacity to create great medicines as well as lethal weapons. So much of witchcraft involves incorporating this two-handed approach; embracing the capacity to hex alongside the capacity to heal, to cure and to curse, and to hold space for both understandings. One of the most persistent ideas about witches was that they flew on broomsticks, pitchforks, or animals’ backs to midnight meetings in far-off lands with the devil, demons, and other witches, an event known as the “Witches’ Sabbath.” At these sabbaths, all kinds of offensive, perverse and inhumane activities were said to take place. But what was really going on? In 1458, a man called Abraham the Jew published an account of an interesting experience. He met a witch in Linz, Austria, who gave him an unguent, or ointment, and told him to spread it over his pulse points, as she did the same. Abraham had the sensation of flying through the air to a place he wanted to visit. When he awoke, the witch told him a different tale of her travels, which inspired him to investigate further. He then asked her to take the ointment while he watched. Instead of flying, he observed the witch fall to the floor and remain immobilized for hours; she woke with further tales. He concluded the unguent induced hallucinations of flying and other fantasies (Lois Martin, A Brief History of Witchcraft, pp. 49-50).

Lamiarum Unguenta screenprint on archival paper. Now in the shop! 🌿 I’m hoping to make more in-depth drawings like this one in the near future. Lamiarum Unguenta is Latin for “witches’ ointment,” a paste made from various poisonous plants in a base of animal fat. This topical ointment was absorbed through the skin, allowing the psychoactive effects of the plant to elevate the mind to a trance-like state and aid in astral travel. Witch’s Ointment These ritual formulas are made with powerful plants that have been used in ceremony for hundreds of years. Nightshades, Wolfsbane and fly agaric are all herbs associated with magic and spirit flight. These entheogenic preparations may be employed for a variety of purposes: To connect with witchcraft archetypes and spirits To enhance divination, trance and spell work In combination with energy work and other spiritual healing modalities. Connecting with power plants through the plant’s entheogenic effects Medicinal properties such as relaxation and pain relief when used topically Anointing ritual tools for otherworld travel and more. These formulas are more than just a means of accessing other states of consciousness. They are living and enspirited vehicles of plant magic. - #witchsointment #flyingointment #witchesointment #traditionalwitch #folkwitch #occultherbalism #poisonpath #thepoisonpath #poisonplantallies https://www.instagram.com/p/CnkKiCerrVI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Mandrake Flying Ointment Please note, as I grow my own Baneful plants, I have and will continue to have an ample amount and supply of Belladonna, Henbane, Datura, and Mandrake medicines. Mandragora Officinarum⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Betwixt sleep and poison, mandragora makes magic"⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Known as the plant of Hekate, the mandragora root is consecrated to the chthonic deity of the Underworld, Hekate.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Historically, Witches would make an alliance with the plant spirit, to act as a vessel for spirits or familiars to live within, to absorb a life threatening disease from an afflicted person, therefore saving the person's life, and to absorb demons/spirits from a possessed individual-- saving the afflicted person's life, upon destruction of the root, sending the unwanted back where they belong.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Germanic seeresses, known for their miraculous abilities, would enter a prophetic ecstasy w/the aid of such magical agents as mandrake, and shamanic techniques. "Master of life breath" "The most famous magical plant in history" (Herser, 1987)⠀⠀⠀ Great for witches flight & spirit communication.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A member of the Solanaceae family, the mandrake plant is helpful for arthritis, abscesses, inflammation of the eyes or skin, anxiety, discharge, swollen glands, depression, uterine inflammation, painful joints, complications during labor, ulcers, tumors, hemorrhoids, impotence, cramps, headaches, liver pains, stomach ailments, menstrual problems, spleen pains, amenorrhea, sleeplessness, infertility, wounds, toothaches, and general injuries.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I recommend Mandrake as an aphrodisiac, as it is safe to apply to mucous membranes.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Properties include anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anesthetic, antispasmodic, antisialagogue, antidepressant, anti-anxiety, aphrodisiac, euphoria inducer, anti-nausea, anticholinergic, and sleep aid.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mandrake, sunflower oil, poplar buds, and vegan Candelilla wax⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #thejaggedpath #mandrake #poisonpath #poisonousplants #flyingointment #aphrodisiac #medicinalnightshades #folkmagic #wisewoman (at Galveston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm82PvEOBVB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
