A few years back, I handed my fanzine over to my friend James B. Hunt aka NXOEED, one of my favorite artists (and the most creative artist in Phoenix). Favorite quotes include, “life was joyless,” “we were kids and it was 1985,” and “humans are alright.” This issue is $2.99. Here's the interview with him ➡️ #nxoeed #nxoeedlaboratories #flukefanzine #flukezine #zine #zines #fanzine #fanzines #minimalzine #punkzine #artzine #artzines #darkart #hifructose #juxtapoz #fantagraphics #comix #comics #inktober (at Phoenix, Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjlDtH8Le0a/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

[LINK IN BIO] Fluke 18 review in Razorcake 120: “One of the many things I admire about Fluke is it’s like stepping into a community when you open it up. There’s some returning folks like Gary Floyd, and then there’s the shared connections (three of the people featured in this issue all know buZ blurr, and I imagine Gary Floyd and Bill Daniel know each other through their involvement with Texas, and later San Francisco, punk). Along with the interviews (Susan A. Phillips, Bill Daniel, Gary Floyd), you get skateboarding in Arkansas, Linda Kite writing about Desolation Center, Sergej Vutuc photos and more. The interviews are always interesting and go beyond light talk. The articles are personal and make you feel like you’re there with the writer. Easily one of the best zines going.” -Matt Average #zine #zines #flukefanzine #flukezine #fanzine #fanzines #punkzine #billdaniel #whoisbozotexino #buzblurr #susanaphilips #graffiti #garyfloyd #dickshatepolice #minuteman #lindakite #desolationcenter #dboon #nxoeed #jamesbhunt #sergejvutuc #skateboarding #80sskateboarding (at Phoenix, Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKbxl23DFFs/?igshid=15za06j1t3tyj

[LINK IN BIO] Fluke 14, 2017 "There’s very little rock in Arkansas” -Henry Rollins, 1987 On February 13th, 1986 Black Flag played the first ever punk show in Little Rock, Arkansas. Although it was 21 and over, some local teenagers managed to get in. Prior to this, there wasn’t much of a punk scene in Little Rock. Undoubtedly, this night sparked a movement and word quickly spread throughout high schools in the greater Little Rock area. The following year, a short-lived venue called the Annex was opened by local punk Rob O, who saw Black Flag. Meat Puppets played the Annex, which proved to be its most successful show before the venue closed its doors. In that same year, Tim Lamb, also in attendance for the Black Flag show, started Lighten Up! fanzine, which covered the nascent local scene as well as bands outside of Arkansas. Lighten Up! gained national attention and played an influential role in the formative years of the Little Rock punk scene. In 1988, the art gallery Urbi et Orbi opened on the corner of 7th and Chester in downtown Little Rock. The venue switched hands (and names) a number of times until finally it settled into a pizzeria called Vino’s. With the restaurant built in the front, Vino’s kept the performance space for bands in the back. Most of the employees were in the bands that would play shows at Vino’s. James Brady, who formed Trusty with Bobby Matthews, Paul Bowling and Bircho, was one of these employees. James had access to the show calendar so when touring bands such as Fugazi and Green Day were booked, James would simply add “Trusty” to the bill. He and Bobby would create the flyers and Colette Tucker would drive around town, stapling them to telephone poles. The best part is these were all-ages shows. Teenagers from many different schools converged to find one another and, in turn, found themselves. A scene was born and the movement exploded. Here you will find 40 show flyers from 1988 through 1992, from that old brick building on a corner of small town America. Build it and they will come. #flukefanzine #flukefanzinefriday #flukezine #blackflag #punkflyers #punkrock #punkzine #econochrist #fugazi #zine #zines #fanzine #fanzines (at Vino's Pizza-Pub-Brewery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKFklV1jX9Y/?igshid=4zelsrkcwrqq

Happy birthday Fluke! Steve, Jason and I published issue 1 on this day 29 years ago, from a Kinko’s in North Little Rock, AR. This photo was taken in the summer of ‘92, after I hopped trains and hitchhiked from Chicago to Little Rock with a couple of friends, to see Econochrist play a Sunday matinee. Sitting on the tracks, tagging the box with “FLK” and other markings. With the struggles I’ve had throughout my life, Fluke is a bright spot. I feel very fortunate to have something I’m passionate about. Thank you all for the support over the years! 📸: @night_depository #flukefanzine #flukezine #towncraftLR (at Little Rock, Arkansas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCyLG_2DRGS/?igshid=fa39ozmxm50z

“Dogtown, USA” is the opening piece in the new issue of Fluke. A story I wrote about being a young spectator of the skateboard scene that revolved around Paige Hearn’s ramp from 1985 into the next decade. I was lucky enough to watch legends such as Tony Hawk, Christian Hosoi, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Neil Blender, Jeff Grosso, Chris Miller and many more skate this ramp. There wasn’t a whole lot else going on at the time for a kid in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Aside from the arcade/pool hall across the street, of course. [LINK IN BIO] From the new issue of Fluke, Susan A. Phillips speaks on buZ blurr & Colossus of Roads: “As Colossus of Roads, he has utilized the North American Railroad platform for his work. His clandestine, railroad-related writing continues the tradition of railway worker graffiti through time. The long history of this practice includes such figures as J.B. King, Bozo Texino, Herby and The Rambler—names well known to you and your readers. Colossus of Roads stands apart from all of them because of his intellectual depth, his wry cleverness, and his unique awareness of his place in the history of art.” #colossusofroads #buzblurr #flukefanzine #flukezine #moniker #monikers #monikermonday https://www.instagram.com/p/CClcnp5jpKT/?igshid=1gg0obv4mzwt8

From “Dogtown, USA” in the new issue of Fluke—a story I wrote about Paige Hearn’s halfpipe he built in my hometown in 1985: “From behind the scenes, Paige made quite an impact on the world of skateboarding, mostly through manufacturing boards for Zorlac. He did all of the John Gibson, Craig Johnson and Metallica decks. Pushead’s incredible art—mostly skulls and other creepy characters—adorned the boards. Paige also pressed the Big Boys boards, with Tim Kerr’s art on the bottom. Looking back on it now, the art in skateboarding was incredible and like nothing else I’d ever seen before.” Live long enough and things start to come back around full circle. @dr._andersson recently contacted me from Sweden, asking if I’d be interested in this Metallica Zorlac board that Paige made in 1988. Of course I was.
