12. “How you’ve managed to make it this far in life is beyond me.” Zombie AU, Huddling For Warmth, Fluffy Hoodies?
tags: typical zombie death/horror/etc, honestly pretty fluffy considering the subject, found family (kinda)
__________
Coming to the surface had been a different kind of hell. They’d walked out, seeing the damn sun, and for a moment Red had thought things would be alright. Then the kid had huddled closer to him, the flower in the cracked pot they carried with them everywhere held to their chest, their eyes darting around the edge of the forest. And, well, he knew the look of someone afraid for their life.
“We need to go,” they’d whispered, their voice slightly hoarse. He’d frowned, had been about two seconds away from asking for clarification, when the brush rustled to the side. Frisk hadn’t hesitated before they bolted, running for their life like he’d seen them do only a few times in the underground, and he had just enough sense in him to call after them before everything went to shit.
Turned out, there was a reason they’d climbed up the mountain. Rotting corpses trying to tear you apart tend to active the fight or flight in the best of them.
He’d grabbed his brother and dragged them both to the ripple he could just barely sense that was furthest away, the two of them slamming on the ground with enough force to knock the breath out of him. His brother had checked him over, made sure he was okay, and then turned to where the mountain was a few miles in the distance, a sharp dagger against the sky. “I’m going to go find Frisk,” he’d said, like the stupid self-sacrificing idiot he was, and then he sprinted off before Red’s vision was able to fully clear.
That had been a few days ago.
Red stilled when he heard something in the building beside him, magic sparking at his fingers. It fizzled out quickly, his lack of any food the last day or so sapping most of his extra strength. He crept up, at least knowing how to keep quiet, peering in the bottom of the window of the shop. Over the top of a shelf he saw what was very clearly a skull, there and then gone. Shoving down hope, he moved to the front, walking in through the door and hurrying to the aisle.
Another skeleton blinked up at him, two fangs of gold replacing his incisiors.
Not him.
They stared at one another for a moment before Red turned with a scoff, moving away. His eyes trailed over the shelves, all picked clean, except… Underneath of a display he could see a corner of plastic, so he pulled it out. Beef jerky. His soul clenched at the thought of food, though the shift of footsteps behind him made him shove the bag into the pocket of his jacket, throwing a glare over his shoulder at the other before walking out of the store.
“Hey! Wait!”
Red sped up, wishing he had enough magic to be able to throw an attack backwards to give the idiot a hint. When he got too close Red turned, pulling out a pocket knife- not much, but it was better than nothing- facing him. The other had the sense to stop, but not the sense to run away staring blankly at the blade in his hand.
“I dunno who you are,” he growled, “but I suggest you get back to whatever the hell you were doing and leave me alone.”
“I just-”
Red scoffed, shaking his head. “I don’t give a fuck. From the looks of you, you’ve been through enough to know you don’t just follow behind someone.”
The other let out a shaky chuckle, arms moving to his stomach. They paused in mid-air, as if the other just realized something, before flopping down at his sides. His arms were bare, and heavily scarred. “The rules have kinda changed, yeah? Anyone who doesn’t try to bite a chunk out of me is decent enough in my book.” And then, quieter, more to himself than anything. “I’m made of bone, too. Not sure how good I’d even taste.”
Red stared at the other for a moment. “What’s your name, kid?”
“Slim.”
“How you’ve managed to make it this far is beyond me. Go the fuck away.”
He kept walking. Unsurprisingly, the footsteps followed. “I was just gonna ask if- if you’ve seen my bro.”
Red’s pace didn’t falter. It didn’t. “No. Go away.”
The other continued to follow him. Red was too tired to bother to tell him to fuck off again. They walked into the woods and settled underneath a small tree for the night. As the sun went down, the chill started to set in, but Red didn’t bother building a fire. Not after the attention it got him last time. He ate the food he’d found, and when there were only a few pieces left he threw them in the direction of the other. When his gaze met his own he scowled. “Eat it or don’t. Just keep your damn mouth shut.”
After a moment he heard the crinkle of plastic and the sounds of chewing. Their surroundings got darker until the area was nearly black, covered in shadow. Softly, then growing louder, Red heard the clatter of bones.
Red stared at him for a few long moments, off to the side and shivering like hell in the cold, and he fought the urge to let loose a string of curses. Damn this idiot who had his brother’s face, making him go soft. He grumbled as he unzipped his jacket, kicking the other with his foot. Slim started and looked over at him.
“What-”
“Just shut the hell up and get over here before I change my mind.”
The other didn’t hesitate and scooted over to his side. His limbs were gangly and he was freezing, like he was made of ice. It quickly sapped all the heat from his bones but he didn’t push him away, just stared at the patch of stars visible from the trees and felt the trembling in the other’s body slowly start to die down.
“Thanks,” he muttered, quiet enough that Red wouldn’t have heard it if he wasn’t that close to the other, able to feel the vibration of his chest as he spoke.
He didn’t respond, but pulled him closer.

Flufftober pt. 2
Woooo next part XD sorry this one was later, I’m pretty sick at the moment lol
Day 2: Ticket (FluffyHoodies)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/16154969/chapters/37791257
Slim squinted down at the hem of his favorite shirt, his sockets squinting as he lifted it up and to what passed for his nose. Fresh and clean scented. A hint of lavender. Nothing like the general sweat and caramel flavors that tended to stick to his shirts, especially this one. Which meant someone had washed it, but neither his own brother nor Red’s had been over in the past three days. Unusual on its own, but Slim wasn’t questioning it.
Still, it left the mystery as to who the hell had done the laundry. When he’d gone to his bedroom to investigate, it seemed that both his favorite shirt and a pair of leggings he favored had been laundered, as well as a pair of briefs. Further inspection revealed that his favorite jacket was missing. Nothing else had been touched. So it was just an outfit for a certain occasion, but still, who the hell had done it? No one had broken in, done his laundry, and stolen his jacket.
Searching for Red turned up nothing, the little asshole conspicuously missing from the small house they shared. However, in his search, he found his favorite pair of boots sitting by the front door, scrubbed clean and even missing some of the stains that had been on them for years. Now he was truly and utterly flabbergasted, but until he found Red, he knew he wouldn’t be getting any answers.
Texting Fell lead nowhere, other than a reminder that book club met up this Sunday. A text shot to his own brother produced nothing but a reminder that he needed to eat and maintain a decent caloric intake. Slim pointedly did not tell his brother that he hadn’t eaten, despite it already being 3 in the afternoon, and promised to eat something substantial as he waited for Red to show up.
A cooked batch of ravioli later and Red still wasn’t home. It was true that the other wasn’t likely to just strut through the front door, but Slim still found himself listening for it to squeak open, the hinges old and rusted. It was nearing on 5 by the time he decided that sending a text to the bf himself would probably be a good idea, and quickly typed out a message that didn’t really convey the panic bubbling in his soul.
Hey wat u doin
He waited for a few minutes, but sighed with a huff as he realized the asshole probably didn’t even have his phone on, let along where he could hear it. Setting his phone down on the table top, Slim began picking at the wood grain, trying to rack his mind and remember if Red had said he was going to be anywhere that day. If he had to work a shift at Dante’s, Slim could understand, but a quick talk or text saying so would have been nice.
Sighing, he sent off one more text to Fell before he got up, resolved to go check Dante’s and, if that didn’t work, search their usual haunts. Just as he was headed to the front door, though, a loud thump resounded through the house. Slim paused, listening as orange magic lit his eyelight, and cursed silently as he heard yet another thump and a nearly inaudible “Fuck!” Moving swiftly through the living room, Slim walked on silent feet until he was outside of the laundry room. The door was shut, the sounds inside sounding like someone was kicking the side of their washing machine.
Wary, but mostly confused, Slim nudged open the door. The sight that he was met with made him calm, but even more confused.
Red was indeed kicking the side of the washing machine, leaving a few dents as his steel toed boots came in contact with the metal siding. In the basket beside him was both his own and Slim’s jacket.
Slim stared at a seething Red, then at the jackets, then, politely, “What the fuck are you doing?”
Red started, magic flashing as he spun around, though as he met Slim’s eyes his expression turned a bit sheepish. Guilty, even. “Hey babe, were ya lookin’ fer this? Sorry, yer can have it now.” He picked up the jacket with the tips of his fingers and handed it over, Slim taking it and taking in the fresh warmth. “I washed it with tha delicate settin’s, so it shouldn’ be damaged.”
Slim stared down at his jacket for a long moment. “Why the hell did you wash it in the first place?”
Red grinned, the sheepish expression still in place. “Well, I got a surprise fer ya. Though ya might wanna go in comfort.” Slim continued to stare until Red looked away, rubbing the back of his skull before sighing and digging what looked to be two slips of paper from his pocket. “Might as well show ya now, the secret’s out.”
Slim took the two slips of paper, noting the shine to them, before flipping them over. In bold lettering was listed two reserved seats for the nearby Lady Gaga tour concert that just happened to be a half hour away. He stared down at the tickets for a moment, then threw his arms around Red, who grunted, but was audibly grinning.
“Happy yer like ‘em, lets get on tha road already.”

It’s a C: Not a bad ship and D: I’m neutral on it UwU ✨
I’m not super into it, but what I have seen I do like ye, I’m mostly neutral and not super into it mostly because of how I imagine they would work with my own take on the boys, but the things I have read and seen tho is pretty sweet ye
But with my own boys is that Red wants nothing to do with Rus at all I’m actually pretty sure Red might even try to kill him and shit pfft xD haven’t thought super much about it tho but it is possible it could change but I am very sure they will butt heads af
Send me a ship and I will rate it

The Lazy Factor: A FluffyHoods Story
This story is a gift for redtomatofan because I cannot get over their headcanon of Red and Slim being such good friends (and idjits). This is a continuation of an ask I sent from my main account about the TV remote.
Contains: SFW, some language, mild drinking, marijuana use, under the cut for length
Slim never imagined that he would someday discover a universe so similar to his own, much less a universe containing a bizarro copy of himself. Sure, Red lacked a little (a lot) in the height department, and his voice sounded like he smoked 4 packs a day when he only actually smoked 3. Still, any alternate version of himself was a guy he could see himself liking, and he definitely enjoyed spending time with Red.
Today found them sprawled on the couch with lofty plans to binge-watch TV until they dozed off mid-afternoon in a pile of their own snack garbage, beer bottles, and cigarette butts. Slim appeared to be poured over the back of the couch with his coccyx glued to the backrest, his spine stretched along the seat cushion, and his arms flopped uselessly over his upside down skull so that his hands dragged the floor.
Red used Slim’s ribcage as a pillow, letting his legs dangle over the armrest as he drummed it with the heels of his feet. They’d run into a problem already, but surely two former science nerds could overcome the tiny obstacle before them- a missing remote.
They’d already patted the couch apathetically to no avail when Red spotted the wayward item sitting on the TV stand next to the TV. With a snort, he pointed it out to Slim.
“who puts the remote next t' the tv anyway? if i wanted t’ get up, I’d go over there and turn the fucking thing on myself!” Red complained.
“‘s your house. your bro probably did it,” Slim pointed out without making the effort of actually pointing.
Red sighed. “now what?”
“dunno.” Slim rolled himself into an upright position like the world’s least talented acrobat, tipping Red off of him in the process. With a groan of supreme exertion, Slim stretched his leg out as far as it would go and wiggled his foot, hoping to dislodge the remote without getting up.If only he were a few feet taller, they’d be flipping channels by now.
Red and Slim sat in contemplative silence, staring at their former best buddy and current nemesis, the television remote. Red idly suggested just watching the blank screen until someone came home to help them. Slim suggested throwing things, but an impact from their end would just push the remote further away. They glared, stroking their jawbones and humming to themselves in hopes of hmm-ing up a solution.
“magic?” suggested Slim tiredly. Maybe if they discussed it long enough, they could just skip to the nap part of their day.
“i dunno,” hedged Red. “gotta focus the magic, move my hand, wait. seems like a lot of work. what’re you doing?”
Slim had his phone in his hand. He tapped a few keys and pressed the speaker button before tossing the phone onto the coffee table so they could talk into it together.
“... ‘lo?” The line crackled with static, nearly drowning out the greeting. Cell phones weren’t meant to connect across the multiverse. “... ‘ello?” The voice became clearer, and there could be no mistaking Stretch’s indolent drawl.
“stretch, dude, you gotta help us,” begged Red.
“... ‘s wrong?” Stretch sounded mildly concerned, pretty much the most concerned he ever got about anything.
“we’re at Red’s house, and the remote is across the room, and we don’t wanna get up,” whined Slim. He knew their Underswap counterpart would understand the gravity of the situation.
“... on m’... way...”
Red and Slim were still staring at Slim’s phone when Stretch appeared in a soft whoosh of moving air and lazy skeleton. The newcomer landed squarely on the backrest of the couch with his front end dangling between his Fellverse friends and the toes of his shoes barely touching the floor behind it.
“why didn’t you land by the tv?” demanded Red.
“because i have a better idea,” countered Stretch, tossing a bag onto the coffee table. He pulled out a small hover-drone with a grasping claw, showing it off proudly to the slack-jawed Red and Slim. The Cool Factor of the tech toy easily overpowered the Lazy Factor that prevented them from using boring old magic.
“it’s my house, so i get t' fly it,” declared Red.
“it’s my drone. i’m flying.” Stretch actually formed an ecto-tongue for the sole purpose of blowing a raspberry at Red. Slim seized the opportunity and snatched the control for the drone away from both of them.
”time’s a-wastin’,” said Slim, the skeleton in the room who showed absolutely no concern about wasting time ever.
Slim manipulated the controls for the drone and finally got it airborne. Red and Stretch cheered him on as he carefully guided the craft onward to collect their treasure.... and right into the TV. At first nothing happened, and three skeletons breathed loud sighs of relief until the TV pitched forward, smashing the drone and crashing onto the floor.
The edge of the TV caught the coffee table, flipping it onto the mess with a noisy crunch that boded ill for future television-centric adventures. Red and Stretch stared while Slim casually dropped the controller for the drone and kicked it under the sofa.
“grillby’s?” suggested Red.
“grillby’s,” the other two skeletons agreed.
Raucous laughter filled the bar, and alcohol and puns flowed freely, at least at the table shared by the three skeleton monsters. Other patrons, and the bar owner himself, were less enthused by the rowdy guests. Not a single one of the three was likely to actually pay the huge tab they ran up, and leverage over anyone other than Red meant little to Grillby. He had no desire at all to travel the multiverse collecting gold from infinite copies of the same obnoxious asshole.
The three skeletons sneakily passed a joint around under the table, not that their clandestine hand-offs fooled anyone. Any monster with eyeholes and some semblance of a nose could tell they weren’t puffing on regular cigarettes. Plus, they made ridiculous whisper-shouted puns about it, and a distinct lack of coordination and speed made their attempts at secrecy laughable at best. And laugh they did.
“i love this joint,” wheezed Stretch, “and the bar ain’t bad either.”
Red exhaled a cloud of smoke. “don’t be so blunt about it, dude.”
“don’t wanna get kicked out for our dubi-ous activities,” snickered Slim.
The three skeletons cackled and nearly fell out of their chairs.
Red, Stretch, and Slim stumbled home, drunk, high, and smeared with condiments where condiments should obviously not be smeared. As they burst through the door of Red’s house, the jumbled pile of electronics and furniture provided a not-quite-sobering-enough reminder of their previous activities.
“whaaaaaaaaaaaaa-” Stretch started to say, but he lost his train of thought mid word and just continued to make the vowel sound indefinitely in a higher octave.
Red snorted and elbowed Stretch to quiet him.
“wha... what happened... to the tv?” asked Slim, blinking comically and swaying on his feet.
“THAT’S WHAT WE’D LIKE TO KNOW.”
Three skulls rotated slowly towards the sound of the harsh, grating voice. Three armored skeletons stood in the living room, arms crossed in front of their ribcages- two as short as Red and one as tall as Slim and Stretch. Boots tapped impatiently on the carpet and accusing sockets narrowed.
Oh, shit.
It was their brothers!
