Frits Thaulow - And as long as it does I’ll just sit here, and watch the river flow.

It hasn’t even frozen here for the last two nights but this time last year it was so cold that even the briskly flowing stream was freezing.

Firmly resolved to continue his quest in search of the bright light and warmth which he was convinced must exist somewhere in the depths of the winter darkness, Algy flew on quite some distance on the following morning, but still without any idea of which direction he ought to take.
After a while he observed a pretty burn flowing in a most determined manner, into the heart of a woodland of which he could only see the nearest edge, for the trees stretched out far into the distance, and perhaps well beyond the horizon too…
Fluttering down to a lower level, Algy paused to rest beside the water, and as he watched the rippples flowing ever onward into the wood he felt that the burn was urging him to follow its course… But he could see no way through the woods, and even following the stream itself appeared to be an impossible challenge, for beyond the point at which he had chosen to perch, it ran beneath a mass of low-hanging branches and undergrowth, then vanished into a dense tangle which no fluffy bird larger than a diminutive wren could ever hope to navigate.
Wondering how to proceed, Algy recalled a poem which he had learned long ago, when he was nothing more than a wee fluffy chick:
They shut the road through the woods Seventy years ago. Weather and rain have undone it again, And now you would never know There was once a road through the woods Before they planted the trees.  It is underneath the coppice and heath, And the thin anemones. Only the keeper sees That, where the ring-dove broods, And the badgers roll at ease, There was once a road through the woods. Yet, if you enter the woods Of a summer evening late, When the night-air cools on the trout-ringed pools Where the otter whistles his mate, (They fear not men in the woods, Because they see so few.) You will hear the beat of a horse’s feet, And the swish of a skirt in the dew, Steadily cantering through The misty solitudes, As though they perfectly knew The old lost road through the woods. But there is no road through the woods.
[Algy is quoting the poem The Way through the Woods by the late 19th/early 20th century English writer Rudyard Kipling.]
