Writing Reflection

After getting into writing last year I went mildly to totally insane this year. I wrote more than I even thought possible, already upped my writing goal in January after writing like 30k on WIPs alone in two weeks, only to then end up hitting my yearly writing goal in September anyway.

I got into Podfic this year and it has brought me a lot of joy to work on recording and editing, as well as to participate in even more challenges and exchanges than I did last year.

Once again, I met a lot of lovely people and had a great time writing and simply enjoying fandom with people I like to consider friends by now.

There were many ups and downs, but I'm glad to say that, over all, this year was a good one for me.

I hope you had a good year as well and wish everyone a good start into the New Year. 💜

Crossover pairing triad spotlight: WinterHawkHood (Bucky Barnes/Clint Barton/Jason Todd)

Part of the appeal of these three might be the way they balance each other out; there are a lot of parallels, but they have wildly different temperaments. Another part is the way they've all dabbled in dubious morality at one point or another; none fit the traditional hero mold, and they're all more interesting for it. Whatever the reason, they’re a whole lot of fun to write. And thanks to @winterhawkhood-tober, there are a decent number of fics to choose from here!

Finders Keepers by @drgrlfriend - PG, 1500 words. Funny "meet-ugly" fic in which their pets get together before they do.

Marshmallow Crime Lords series by @noxnthea and @there-must-be-a-lock - PG-13, 46k and counting. Fluffy feel-good series with established WinterHawkHood and lots of general Batfam shenanigans.

Penguin by @claraxbarton - teen, 4700 words. Hockey AU! Clara posted a WHH fic every day during October and is singlehandedly responsible for well over a third of the fics in this tag, and it was hard to narrow down which ones to include, but this is a standout.

Third Wheel by @kangofu-cb - explicit, 10,770 words. Absolutely stellar threesome, featuring established Winterhawk with Jason as the guest star. Starts hilarious, gets scorching-hot, ends with a hint of feelings.

Staring At The Sun (Can't Look Away) series by @flowerparrish - 9k total, individual fics range from T to explicit. Adorable coffeeshop AU featuring trans!Clint and lots of fluff.

Snow On The Beach series by @bittercape - fics range from T to explicit, 13k total. Poly negotiations. Some fics are cute and fluffy, some are super sexy, all have great characterization and relationship dynamics.

Tear Through The Night And Raise Some Hell by @carcrash429 - explicit, 6500 words. Vampires! Spooky, angsty, and intriguing.

Raven & Raven(ous) by @claraxbarton and @kangofu-cb - teen/explicit and 4600/7400 respectively. Magic AU! The first fic is Clara's fun setup for a whole beautifully-sketched-out universe; the second is CB's deliciously smutty follow-up, set about a year later.

Feels Like The First Time by @mightymightygnomepriest - explicit, 2k. An incredibly sweet, poignant, and sexy fic about Clint and Bucky giving Jason a second chance at a first time.

Soooo my AO3 total stats are lies. *Especially* the word count. There's I think five big bang fics I'm co-creator on because we posted the art and fic together. And then there's been a lot of multivoice podfics where I had like. Two lines. So I'll post my totals, but then I'll try and give you more accurate numbers.

User Subscriptions:47 Kudos:5,644 Comment Threads:1,144 Bookmarks:1,574 Subscriptions:442 Word Count:175,657 Hits:101,625 So my actual word count is 10,911. Which is honestly a lot higher than I thought it was going to be.

The thing with the most hits that I have (3994) is the Podfic of 'Of Queens Knights and Pawns'. It's a 600k fic that 27 of us have been taking turns doing sections of. When it's done, I think my contribution will be around 90k (so 9ish hours) The thing with most kudos that I feel like I did enough work on to count is my fic 'When You're Gone' with 173 (there's three podfics that have more than that, but I had very small parts in them)

The most comment threads (56) is my podfic of 'When Darkness Seems to Hide This Place' It's my longest finished podfic at just a bit over 11 hours.

The one with the most bookmarks that I had a decently large part in is the podfic of 'Face the Music'. It's a multivoice and I did Anakin. My friend @flowerparrish did a phenomenal job editing it (if you aren't familiar the premise is Anakin starts hearing a soundtrack for his life. So there's a bunch of different music in it).

Is there a piece of media that inspires my writing? Hmm I think books like 'In the Forests of the Night' by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. Things that are fairly short and light on details but still tell a fantastic story.

Ohhh that's a tough one. Considering quality over sentimentality, I think I can only reasonably narrow it down to three favorites. So, longest to shortest:

My Heart's Red Muscle - 78K, cyborg!Waxer AU. Includes a fix-it, and focuses a lot on trying to fit in when you're different as well as the question, 'how much of who you are is simply the result of your collected memories?'

We Could Breathe Underwater - 5K, written for @waxerboilmonth 2023. It's about Waxer and Boil being Force-sensitive, meeting each other, and how their Force bond effects them.

Love is - 2K, part of my huge Open Skies AU. It started with a prompt from @writers-choice, and I used some lyrics from "If Work Permits," by the Format, to write a short scene for each of these lines:

Summary Mayday survives at the end of The Outpost. This has a lot of implications for Crosshair, chief among them: what exactly do they do now?

Flee from the Empire, obviously. And if Crosshair continues to not examine his internal turmoil over letting Mayday think Clone Force 99 are all dead when Crosshair knows all too well that they’re alive, that’s Crosshair’s business and no one else’s.

Until their paths cross and it’s everyone’s business, that is.

This fic’s core idea came from this post by @cloned-eyes, which posits what would have happened if Mayday had survived and he and Crosshair bailed together but don’t rejoin the Batch immediately. I took that and rolled with it.

Those clones served alongside General Billaba for years. How could they turn on her like that?

Echo’s voice rang out in Crosshair’s mind. It had been like a warning bell to him back then; it was a relief to hear it now and know what it (hopefully) meant.

“No. Because of the chip.”

Mayday glanced up, eyes narrow. “What?”

“The inhibitor chip.” Crosshair tapped the spot on his head where the ion scarring remained. “Biotech implanted in us by the Kaminoans.”

Mayday went rigid. “Biotech.”

“It’s how they could ensure we’d follow any orders given.” Even horrific ones.

Mayday’s fingers tightened on his canteen, eyes scanning the floor in disbelief. “That—that can’t—” The denials were half-hearted at best, not even fully formed. Crosshair continued, undeterred.

“You said it yourself. Order 66 didn’t make sense. Why didn’t we arrest them? Why weren’t they put through due process?” Traitors don’t deserve due process, the chip would have assured him.

Mayday looked up at him, new understanding lighting his expression with horror. “You mean—you—”

Nausea threatened. Crosshair fought it down. “I tried to.”

“Tried.”

“He escaped.”

Looking at this, I really like to scene-set with my first line. You can usually tell something about the tone of the story from the get-go - frequently a place and an action, sometimes a person, and often a hint to the emotional beat I'm starting with. The exceptions are when I start with speech, which isn't often, but also drops you right into the story.

(there's a leak in this old building) The force, Sakura finds, is by turns very similar to and very different from chakra.  (a few drops go a long way)

Thoughts: I really like identifying the POV character in the first sentence, did in 9 out of 10. Honestly, fewer run on sentences then I would've expected. I like these, but eight of them were fic a day fics so I'm not sure how accurate it is to my normal writing habits. Or, actually, maybe it's the most accurate to my normal writing habits since they had little mental planning. I don't know.

“You don’t get hazard pay?” Clint asks.

She gives him a look that clearly says, Don’t ask stupid questions, but what comes out of her mouth is, “Nobody teaches pre-k to get rich, and nobody lives in Gotham for the peace and quiet. Simon, buddy! Walking inside, not galloping, okay? Anyway, it’s a nationwide problem, really, but full-time daycare options in this city are — no thank you, Quincy! Excuse me for a second.”

She bolts over to the other side of the room, where two kids are locked in a screaming tussle over a toy.

In a shocking twist of events, Simon trips and eats it in spectacular fashion a couple feet away from Clint. He props himself up on chubby arms, looking down at the traitorous ground and then up at Clint like he’s expecting commiseration.

“Let me guess, didn’t see that one coming?” Clint says.

Despite himself, despite the goofy line and even goofier delivery, Bucky can’t help the grin spreading on his face when he hears the familiar drawl and looks up into a very familiar face.

Bucky’s been nursing a drink at the open bar for the last twenty minutes, avoiding as much small talk as he can at the Stark Charity Gala, and he’s been pretty successful up until now. Something about his ‘murder face’ keeping the ‘civilians’ away.

But Clint Barton, shit eating grin broad and stupid and handsome on his face, and Jason Todd, fuck-off smirk deadly and handsome on his face, clearly don’t care about his murder face. And they aren’t civilians.

Clint pulls Bucky into a hug and holds him close and tight like they’ve just come through a war and not just another season of professional baseball.

He lets Bucky go with a squeeze to his neck and a brush of lips against his cheek that probably no one else but them and Jason catch.

“Listen,” the guy says, and his voice is low and kinda rough, and he’s got an accent Bucky can’t quite place. “I’m not tryin’ to overstep, but I overheard kind of a lot and like. I know you’re, uh… trying to work through some shit, man, and I get it. I, uh, had kinda a fanatical upbringing myself. But I’m not sure this guy is the one to work it out with, you know?”

Bucky… is going to kill Clint. Suddenly all of Clint’s odd comments and strangely demure behavior and even his clothes start to make a kind of insane sense. He’s play-acting at more than just a first date. Clint’s pretending to be someone else entirely, and Bucky’s not sure if it’s a joke or a bad attempt at seduction, but either way a heads-up before the evening started would have prevented a hell of a lot of confusion and maybe prevented Bucky from nearly murdering his husband in a bar in Hell’s Kitchen on a Wednesday night.

The thing was, Jason was twenty three and had spent his teenage years as a vigilante and then some more of his teenage years dead and then brainwashed and then hell-bent on revenge. Middle school had been hell and he’d never even had the chance to go to high school for more than a month before his life very abruptly ended.

He knew, from being around Dick and Roy, and now Clint and Bucky, that being twenty three and still a virgin wasn’t exactly normal, even - perhaps especially - considering his circumstances. But, well. Jason was twenty three and a virgin and it sure as hell didn’t seem like that was going to change anytime soon.

Hi there! I have an odd but friendly question about a tag you - I'm assuming you're Flowerparrish on both here and AO3 - left on one of my fics. Several years ago. But I've wondered ever since. You tagged a fic I wrote about Will Shakespeare "read aloud at icfa". I don't have my writing read aloud very often so I am burningly curious. My google search suggested ICFA is the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts?

Haha omfg yes! So the story there is basically my friend and I were at that conference and we went out one night and somehow?? Decided?? To inebriated read each other fanfic?? Anyway I really loved that fic when I read it to my friend so I tagged it so I would remember the context and I do smile every time I see it in my bookmarks 😂💖 It was very fun lol and we both really enjoyed the fic
