Versions of this I have seen:

Wingfics where your wings are a physical representation of your soul, and the coloration starts to match your potential match.

Quasi-Daemon AU where touching someone else's soul is physically painful if you aren't compatible.

Some Soulmark AUs, though. admittedly the one Im thinking of is the one I wrote, where there are different levels of rarity, and you can match with anyone that matches yours, and live a happy life. so if you have a truly unique mark, you only have one chance.

Flowermark AUs, where you get tattoos, flower or otherwise, that match the people that are your soulmates. Doesn't have to be a same-moment thing.

Arguably some Omegaverse. Not the ones where you catch a whiff and its locked in. But the times where scent match means Hey, This One Maybe?? but it doesn't lock in until of a conscious choice.

There should be more. In the sense that there should be more ways to write this. Where there might be indicators that this one is a good idea, but it isn't locked in. You can change the path you're on. You can refuse it, or you can build a bond where the universe says there is no proof you can keep that happiness.

Non-fated soulmate AUs are wildly underrepresented in fandom. Not just a guaranteed person that is perfect for you, but one you choose. A soulmate identifier that tells you that this one could be everything. A way to represent a soul as a Thing that the world can judge and interact with, that lets your souls look at each other and tell you if you can trust them. And then let the pairing make the choice to stay, turning a possibility into a permanent soulbond.

aaanyway because im at least a bit self aware and understand I will never produce a lengthy fic like I so desperately want to... here's my take on soulmate aus that yall can feel free to use (just credit me pls and thank you). I doubt any one soulmate au is completely original but I never saw anything like this and came up with it years ago (and wrote about it once) but details under the cut. tldr; soulmates are made (and even lost) not found. you can have multiple soulmates (i.e. your parents, siblings, friends, romantic/sexual partners etc) only thing needed is a deep emotional connection. the soulmarks show up in the form of flowers and the number of flowers changes depending on the bond strength. flowers represent your soulmate's current emotional state. see below for more details

soulmates are made not found

your soulmate(s) can be anyone from your parents to siblings to friends to romantic/sexual partners etc

the only determining factor for a soul bond is a deep emotional connection

the mark will show up on your body in the form of flower(s)

the placement of the mark can sometimes be symbolic but often isn't especially for those with multiple soulmarks

at the early stages of the soulbond, the soulmark will be small and maybe be only one or two flowers

the flowers that show up will change depending on your soulmate's current emotional state (see flower languages)

as your emotional bond/soulbond grows with your soulmate(s) so will the mark(s)

one flower can turn into a whole bouquet which will allow for a more complex reading on someone's emotions (as you add more flowers and their meanings you can create a more complex meaning to the whole bouquet)

soulmarks can also disapear

you can damage the skin where they are at and you can also lose a soulbond

it's harder than just growing distant but as your bond deteriorates, the number of flowers will lessen

your soulmark can also show your soulmate's physical state in a way

if the flowers begin to wilt they may be injured or sick

if the flowers wither and die, your soulmate has died

many people who have dead soulmates will get their soulmark with certain flowers that hold a special meaning to them tattooed on the area where their mark once was

people often cover up soulmarks that are easily visible as it's a deep invasion of privacy for their soulmate

there are plenty of traditions formed around soulmarks

soulmates that get married will proudly display their marks during wedding ceremonies etc

there's much dedication to the art of flower/plant meanings as that's the baseline for everything

some cultures have some variations in meanings, but overall it's understood that the flowers/plants that show have meaning to your soulmate's emotional state

also soul marks that lessen as a bond begins to lessen, can also grow back in full later. it really depends on how things go between you and that soulmate

I went on a bot of scavenger hunt with that flower 'mark' that keeps showing up, and I have reason to believe that it symbolizes The Hacker. My reasons are: 1. It shows up in the tags of an ask where someone asks "what is getting worse?", In context with Mæstro, and Syl replied "Oh, it's just a little injury." 2. It shows up in the tags of quite a few comic pages that we now know have referred to Hacker. In conclusion? The flowermark symbolizes when something is related to The Hacker.

Other times it’s me just acting suspicious or mischievous in relation to the comic’s current situation, which usually means something’s about to happen~
