thunderchase > krrakapaoha "thunder will-travel", better translated as "will seek out thunder", in reference to her bold daring attitude - it's supposed to evoke the image of running directly into a storm! her name could also be translated as stormchaser or thrillseeker. the boldness of her name is in contrast to her sister's name, which is...

pickerelstripe > kishkiseek (kishki is a claymew word shhh) "chain pickerel with thick stripes". could also be translated as.... uh, pickerelstripe. her name's supposed to be rather dull, especially next to her sister, which plays into some major self-worth issues - it doesn't help that their dad's the leader and christened them with these names.

Where does the falsehood come from? RiverClan perpetuates the rumor as a mean joke against other Clans. Word comes from Brain + Light Pink (the color 'blush', in Clanmew).

Tareque's Moon Cookies 🌙

Late night, amidst sleepless bursts, its not uncommon to find Tareque tucked away in his tower’s tiny kitchen, making a batch of his favorite moon cookies.

They’re a simple lavender lemon shortbread treat from his youth that still brings him a sense of content to curl up with a book and a cup of tea while he indulges in half the tray. As an extra treat, he’ll spread lemon curd between two and eat them sandwiched.

Ingredients:

2 sticks (salted) cold butter

2 cups flour

¼ teaspoon sea salt, ground

Lemon zest from 2 lemons

2 tablespoons dried (food grade) lavender flowers, ground

¾ cup powdered/confectioner’s sugar

Directions:

Combine sugar, salt, and flour in a large bowl. Mix until combined.

Dice cold butter into pea-sized pieces (or use a pastry cutter) and add to flour mixture until it has the consistency of wet sand.

Add the lemon zest and dried lavender, (chopped to size preference.)

Knead the crumbly dough until ingredients are lightly combined.

On a heavily floured surface roll out dough using a rolling pin, until about ½ inch thick. Using a small biscuit cutter (or cookie cutter) cut out your cookies and transfer them to a baking sheet (with parchment paper on it).

Re-knead your scraps together and repeat until all your dough is used.

Pre-heat your oven to 325 degrees and let your cookies rest in the freezer for at least 15 minutes. (DO NOT skip this step)

Bake your cookies for 12 minutes.

Let cool and dust with confectioners sugar.

Jared Hopworth may cause the Last Feast in Istanbul, but it’s the Magnus Institute in London he decides to build the centre of his new world. When it begins, the blue of the sky fades. It becomes grey before turning to the yellow of pus, there’s a strange fractal pattern across it that’s only visible without a telescope when a strange electricity pulses through it. The ground becomes soft and wet, it almost seems to breathe. Flowers aren’t flowers anymore, petals are like skin and they smell of meat. The only respite from feeling as if you’re being marched towards the Killing Floor is if another Fear takes an interest in you.

In place of the Panopticon would be the Abattoir, except instead of towering over all of London, the entire capital city has turned into the horrifying palace of bones, blood, visceral, fat, and muscle. From the outside it’s a gigantic grey building with chimneys that go far beyond the sky, pumping out foul smelling smoke that covers the entire country. There are gigantic metal doors that open automatically to welcome in their guests, the walls inside are covered in flesh and muscle, pulsing and pumping constantly. The first rooms you see are the Flesh Avatars that have happily embraced their new place. John Haan can be found chopping up the victims of the flesh, the ones who stumbled into the Abattoir or who were in London when the Last Feast began. He had his own Killing Floor now, the zombie of his son Tom dutifully bringing him more humans to be toyed with, eaten, or fed to the Boneturner.

If you go down to the pens where the livestock is kept, be careful not to vomit because it’s like catnip to the ruler of the pens. In each one are shaking, sobbing victims, fat with hormones being pumped into their body and covered in their own urine and faeces. In the centre of the hall is sat the most gigantic hog than could possibly have existed outside of the Abattoir. The pig could have crushed Buckingham Palace underneath its behind and its breasts and head are hidden through its gigantic gut. If you were able to climb a top of it, you’d see a grotesque beast, a neck roll that swelled and caused a fat head to sink into it with a snout poking out. As his useless arms can’t lift themselves, and his trotters are pathetic stubs, the building brings his meals to him. The pulsing meat on the walls dragging and passing him down the line until they reach the gaping maw of the sow.

In the heart of the building is the Flesh Garden, where rests Jared Hopworth, or what was Jared Hopworth. Now he’s The Boneturner. If you’re unlucky enough to reach his flesh garden, the first thing you would see was a table, a long, wide table covered in rotting carcasses. Cadavers that have maggots crawling in them but are still being left to be feasted on by The Boneturner. If time still worked, it would take the time to walk to the head of the table as it would to walk from one side of the London to the other. What you will see however is tendrils, so many tendrils. Some of them are pink and pulsing, they’re humming as if they’re pumping a substance towards something. Others are hard white bones with sharp edges that follow the same route as the others.

The denizens of The Abattoir and the Flesh Garden exist to serve the Boneturner, all of the flesh that is shredded from those who enter is fed to him eventually, and the bones are added to his own. Few actually see the ruler of this new world, and only the unlucky are given the opportunity. He isn’t recognisable as anything that was ever remotely human anymore. The fleshy tendrils have sharp teeth when they reach their ends which sink into The Boneturner’s skin and cling to him, pumping him full of all the fat and viscera in the Abattoir. The ones they tangle around, that are hard and white as bone are the man himself, he has become so full of bones that they pierced his muscles and skin. Parts of him have tons of bones forced into gigantic mounds of fat, but the ones that don’t have flesh to cover them simply split his skin open and keep growing. Everything in this new world exists to feed, sustain, and add to his collection.

Bonjour à tous, it is 16c out there and feeling fresh but for me that is much better than the heat that we have had. One good thing about the “chaleur” is that it can produce some stunning “orages” (thunderstorms), like the one Thursday into Friday it seemed to go on for such a long time, with the sky lighting up wonderfully and the thunderclaps not too frightening.

It seems to have been a long week, I was up early to go to hospital on Monday. The taxi picked me up at 7am 😳 and we had to pick up another person so our journey took us on a road I had never been on. We went through villages and lovely countryside before arriving in the village which has the local attraction “Nigloland” a theme park which some say is better than Disneyland. It’s smaller, has less crowds and still plenty to entertain all ages.

I had two transfusions, the first was fine but the second made me really cold and I began trembling uncontrollably, guess the nurses have seen it all as they were not concerned by it. Then it was sleep time as I was to wake up at 4am (yes really) get dressed, have breakfast and be in a taxi by 5am! I was being taken to Paris to have the next stage of my treatment, unfortunately due to lack of “chunky” veins in my arms I was sent back to the hospital in Troyes to have a catheter fitted in my groin and the following day was a repeat of the previous one except with the catheter they were able to extract my cells for freezing. I will add that the journey time to Paris is about 2.5 hours one way! The second day I was in an ambulance, on a stretcher, facing the wrong direction which really did mess with my head! However it’s over and done with now, just have to prepare myself for 4 weeks in hospital from 30 August 😳.

I always think of Shildon in Co. Durham as my “hometown”, known as “the cradle of the railways”, I am interested in the history of this mode of transport, architecture is another interest so as you can imagine seeing the stunning railway stations in Paris, of which the above photo of the Gare de Lyon, is one. On the return journey on Wednesday, safely ensconced on my stretcher, I saw two huge columns with figures on top. Unable to take a photo 😡 I was keen to find out what they were. They were the Throne Tollgate on the Place de I’lle de la Réunion. As we drove further away from the columns, I looked up and in the far distance, between the columns was the Eiffel Tower, how I wished I could have “snapped” that picture!

Monique celebrated her birthday on Friday but unlike last year I was unable to visit her. However, she is coming to see me on Tuesday to help me get ready for my month “away”. I have been washing, cleaning, cooking, relaxing and reading. Trying my best to keep everyone “up to date” on what is happening. I had planned to cut the grass when I got home from hospital but I hadn’t factored in the catheter and the oncologist said definitely no mowing. Monique had said she would do it but I asked my neighbour who is only too happy to help me out.

Anie, messaged yesterday, asking if I would like some vine peaches, having had some from her before I was pleased to accept, she arrived with a little posy of flowers from her garden, two small courgettes and the vine peaches. She is coming back this afternoon to have tea and cake.

So now to the favourite part of this blog for “The Daddy”, it’s my music choices, the first one this week was a Eurovision winner for Luxembourg in 1972. The title was “Apres toi” sung by Vicky Leandros. If I remember rightly after she was announced the winner she sang the song in English (don’t quote me on that) it was released as “Come What May”.

The second song is from way back in 1967, gosh can I remember that far back, yes I can and I have loved this song since I first heard it, it’s “The Letter” by The Box Tops.

It’s a Bank Holiday on Monday in the UK and my gorgeous grandchildren are spending the weekend with “The Daddy”.

“The Trainee Solicitor” has been visiting relatives, reading, relaxing as well as working at home. I hear he has two terracotta planters exactly the same as two I have here. They will look good in the garden, maybe they have the hydrangeas in already 🤔.

Now I really must pack my case, and prepare the house for my absence.

Day 23 - The Peruvian Amazon

We are being picked up at 9:00am for our tour. Breakfast is complementary at the hotel but I just need some oats. 

Our cold symptoms have pretty much cleared up but now I have a cough developing. Marco our guide for the next 5 days picks us up and we go via a pharmacy to get some cough syrup and lozenges. 

We head to the HQ to drop some of our stuff off and we start the 90min drive to the lodge. It’s fairly unusual that we can access our lodge by road as most lodges are accessible by boat only. Our lodge would take 5 hours to reach if we were travelling by boat. Once we arrive we just need to take a short boat ride to the other side of the river and we get an intro from Marco, meet the other guests properly - there are two couples from UK and one from US/Canada.  We then get shown to our rooms where we have a little downtime. The room is a bit basic but it’s exactly what I was expecting. 

The site is big and they are building more lodges, the gardens are so well maintained with flowers and fruits growing - plenty of bananas on the trees. 

It takes us quite a while to walk from our lodge back to the lunchroom as there is so much wildlife to see - butterflies, two types of monkeys.

Lunch is served at 1:00pm and it’s really good considering we are in the middle of nowhere. Beetroot, potatoes and carrot salad as entree and vegetable curry for main followed by some watermelon. 

Eating together in the group at set meal times makes it feel a little like boarding school but the group are really nice and we are getting on well so it’s nice to sit together. 

More downtime before we go on a walk later. We need to get adjusted to island time - especially given the limited internet access!

We meet back up at 4:00pm to go on a short 10min walk to a lookout tower. 

The lookout tower is 38m high and is a little scary for me as it gets quite wobbly at the top but it’s easy to get distracted with wildlife spotting. Marco brings his huge telescope so we can zoom in on things - it really puts out Temu binoculars to shame. We see lots of birds - a few types of vultures (3 king vultures were perched in the top of a nearby tree which Marco said was very rare - they were absolutely massive!), a few types of toucans and the olive crested oropendola.

After spotting for a while, it starts getting dark but we stay at the top whilst Marco gives us some information about the area. The lodge is situated on 30 square hectares of private land and it borders Tambopata National Reserve which is 205,000 square hectares. The national reserve is protected land but there is plenty of other land in the Peruvian Amazon that isn’t protected where mining is allowed. He also says that during COVID gold miners started illegally mining in the park because it wasn’t able to be monitored effecting by rangers but this has since been cracked down on. We also find out a bit about native tribes that do not have contact with other humans (plus some that do). 

By the time we get to the bottom it’s really dark and we need our phone torches to get home. 

On the way back to the lodge we see spiders (incl. a deadly spider - I think it was the wandering spider but can’t remember 100% plus a tiny little spider that uses other dead insects to form a big fake spider in its web), a lizard, leaf cutter ants (so cool) and army ants (bad), some frogs plus a cane toad (we know all about this one!)

After the trek we get stuck into dinner - chicken with a creamy mushroom sauce, roasted potatoes and veg. So yummy! Also another older American couple have joined us. 

It’s an early night for us, we have to be ready for our excursion tomorrow at 4:45am! Also the electricity goes off at 10pm and I don’t fancy our chances walking along the uneven/non-handrailed boardwalk in the dark.
