The Westin hotel was near here and knowing someone that stayed there from Wollongong I thought I would check it out.

It was going on 5 oclock and I thought the Prado Museum was free from 5 but it turned out it was from 6.

I decided to line up with the rest. I was towards the front but the line snaked its way through the park at the side of the museum.

It ended up being a pleasant hour as I was in line next to a Polish couple and everyone sat so we just chatted to fill in time.

I got in at 6 and left about 7.30 and the line still snaked through the park. I thought the Museum closed at 8 but maybe it's later. You weren't allowed to take photos but I really enjoyed the museum as it was a bit different to others I have been in. There were a lot of Spanish, Germany, Flemish and Italian paintings. Goya was a featured artist.

From here I walked down to Plaza de Cibeles to catch the bus back along Gran Via which is one of the main shopping streets. My hotel was just off that. I could not believe how many people were on the street. It was wall to wall. The sun was setting on the buildings as I came back.

Sydney, Blue Mountains and the Gold Coast

Before we went to Sydney we had a couple more days to spend around Wollongong. Monday we went to a Hindu Temple that was very new but really beautiful. I wish I could post pictures of it but unfortunately we weren’t allowed to take picture inside. Tuesday we went to a Buddhist temple which is the biggest in the southern hemisphere and it was gorgeous! Gold plating, flowers and beautiful decorations. They also had a wall on which they had posted common questions and answers about Buddhism. Because of the rain we ended up taking another Airbnb before actually going into Sydney. So then we were in Sydney again and for the last time before leaving Australia, the thought of which still makes me sad. We first went to the Sydney Olympic Park where we walked around and tried to imagine the atmosphere from almost 17 years ago. It was overwhelming how big the park is but nice to know that all the facilities are still in use. Then we were off to our next Airbnb. Unfortunately there weren’t any parking spots so we drove a bit out of the city to park. The weather was still really bad so we waited a bit before we went into the city. We spent the evening in Darling Harbour where we had our first proper dinner in 2 weeks: Swordfish burger for Genta, Crocodile burger for Rebecca and steak for me. Yum! The next day was the most fun but also most exhausting day since we left Geelong. We walked around 25.000 steps and 18 km. First we walked to Mrs. Macquarie’s point to have a little photoshoot. From there we walked through the botanic gardens to the Opera House where we had a drink in the Opera bar. Afterwards we took the ferry to Manly beach where we walked around, did some shopping and had a little swim at the beach. For anyone going to Sydney: Manly ferry is not just a means of transportation but also a harbour tour. You get to see all the beautiful houses along the water and an unique view of the harbour bridge and the opera house. So then we went back to circular quay from where we started our walk over the harbour bridge. On the other end we walked to Luna Park and the Olympic Pool. From there we took the ferry back to Circular Quay and walked to Darling Harbour where we just hung out a little bit before walking to Sydney Eye Tower. We had tickets to go up on top but due to some electricity problems we couldn’t go up to the top. In fact a few people had been stuck on top for about 2 hours because the elevator wasn’t working anymore. So we just did some window shopping before we went back to our Airbnb. The next morning we had to check out so we went to car to drop off our things before going into the city. We first went to say goodbye to the Opera House and then went to Bondi Beach. Unfortunately it was wayyyyy too hot to do the walk between Bondi and Coogee beach so we just went into the water and stayed at the beach. Then it was time to leave Sydney and drive into the Blue Mountains. In the morning it was already super hot! Around 40 degrees at 11 am which meant there was no way we would do the hikes we wanted to do. Instead we just went to the Three Sisters and then to a swimming hole before having an early evening. That night was the worst one in the last 4 weeks! At night it still had 30 degrees and we were dying at night. I was so happy when the morning came and we could finally go back to the coast and to the beach. Unfortunately our A/C was not working anymore so we went to a car mechanic in the morning to get it checked out. He regased it but said that more has to be done. So we set up an appointment in Brisbane where our next airbnb would be. The good thing was that the weather was getting colder again so we didn’t really need the Aircon. We then walked around in Newcastle for a bit. We went to a little Cathedral. Newcastle is very beautiful if a little sleepy. The next night and especially morning was a bit strange because we stayed at a camping spot where a woman lives permanently. Said lady was a bit crazy and kept talking about how the system will fail and the government is scum. It was a bit scary and we were all glad when she finally left us alone and we could leave the spot. In Port Macquarie we went to the only koala hospital in the world where they had a tour during which they explained the stories of the hurt koalas. The stories ranged anywhere from funny to sad to very upsetting. The weather was pretty bad the whole week which is why we didn’t really do anything on Wednesday other than going to the Big Banana in Coff’s Harbour. Fortunately the weather got a lot better so the next day we drove to Byron Bay to walk up to the lighthouse and the most easterly point of mainland Australia. Afterwards we hung out at the beach and did some snorkeling before heading up to Surfer's Paradise. After hanging out at the airbnb for a while we went to see 50 shades darker. The next day we went into Surfer's to hang at the beach and get organized for our night out. In the evening we went to a bunch of clubs and bars. The next day was spent entirely at the beach. It was so windy that someone who came with us actually lost their phone in the sand. The next day we spent at the beach as well. Maybe you can see a pattern there. Backpackers don't really do anything... The evening was a bit wet so we plugged my phone into the car speakers and watched a couple of movies in the car. Because of the car appointment in Brisbane at 7:30 am we had to get up super early. We stopped at the airbnb before I went to drop off the car. After relaxing a bit we went into the city to hang out at the lagoon. And that's basically what we did the next two days. We also went onto the free ferry to have a little free river cruise. Last Thurday we went to Rebecca's friend Gill who moved to Australia 11 years ago. We stayed at her house for a total of 4 nights. She showed us the area and the best spots of the Sunshine coast. Friday we went to Noosa where we did an 11 km walk along the water. On the way we stopped at the fairy pool and hell's gates where we even saw about 10 dolphins and a turtle surfing the waves. On Saturday we got up at 3:45 to hike up a mountain from which we could see the sunrise. In the afternoon we went to the beach where there was another one of the rivers that act like a waterslide. Sunday we went to a winery and a (dry) waterfall. Now we are off to Fraser Island, the Whitsundays and Magnetic Island, where Genta will do her dive license and I will continue my training. I can't wait to dive again!
