"You're Magic Now" WIP Preview: Chapters 21 - 25

Since these are still works-in-progress, it is likely that the following excerpts will change between now and the final draft! Please keep that in mind while reading.

Chapter 21: Return to Torrenuvola

Xiao: Alhaitham says that we need to go now. Before the tunnels are closed off.

Ayaka: (already in fairy form) Alright! 

Barbara: I really wish that we could help you.

Keqing: Same here.

Lumine: We already talked about it. You guys are needed here.

Keqing: When did you get so stubborn…? (All four girls hug each other. Lynette mews, getting in the middle of it.)

Bennett: We’re here, too… (Kazuha pats him on the back before the girls part and they join the hug.)

Kazuha: You’re better off here than there, Bennett.

Bennett: I know, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it… (They all part.)

Ayaka: We’ll be okay. I promise.

Bennett: I know.

Xiao: Keqing, are you crying?

Keqing: No, there’s just dust in my eye.

Alhaitham: Hey. If you’re through wasting time, I think Lynette found the right way in.

Lumine: Then let’s go!

Dain: Good luck, Lumine. And come back safe.

Lumine: I will.

Chapter 22: Escape

Alhaitham: Where are we exactly?

Lyney: Professor Lo-- uh, Signora’s room from when she taught here. (Lumine glances around the room. It definitely looks like it’s been thoroughly searched. Lyney crosses over to a seemingly blank wall and traces his hand along the edge.)

Alhaitham: And why did you bring us here? (Lyney presses his hand against the wall and a panel opens up.)

Lyney: I used to have to come in here undetected to make my reports. This passage goes everywhere in the castle, including an abandoned crypt where she would conduct business with Childe and Scaramouche. No one knows about it, kind of like the dungeons. It’s brimming with so much negative energy, that I don’t think anyone would notice if something else was placed there. Like the Lunar Drive?

Lumine: And you’re sure that it’s not going to be… I don’t know… heavily guarded?

Lyney: If it is, most of us have magic and Alhaitham is pretty handy with that sword of his. I doubt that it will be, though. Signora and the others are most likely focused on their assault plans. All we need to do is head down.

Alhaitham: This smells like a trap to me.

Xiao: It is a trap.

Lyney: If it is, I have no knowledge of it. Please, you have to believe me. I’m on your side, not theirs. (Lynette mews and hops down into the tunnel.) See? Even my sister agrees that we don’t have another moment to waste. (He heads down after her. Those that remain exchange looks with each other.)

Xiao: Ladies first. (Lumine sighs as Ayaka heads down before her, just in case something is wrong. Xiao and Alhaitham make up the rear. A shudder runs through her body when the door slams shut behind them. As Lyney had told them, this was a secret passage. And the idea that it’s a trap he’s leading them into fades with Lynette leading the way.)

Xiao: Something about this is off. There are no guards or traps protecting the Lunar Drive. What makes the Fatui so confident?

Chapter 23: Invasion of Magix

(It had been an hour since the end of the latest attack. Everyone is absolutely exhausted. A few people are taking the chance to get a little bit of sleep in before they have to fight off the creatures of decay again. The whole fight was starting to feel like a futile effort. Each wave is stronger than the last, and it feels like there’s more and more of them each time. They need to do something, and that something would be to confront and defeat the Fatui directly.)

(Like that would ever happen with how they’re holed up in Torrenuvola. Barbara’s just finished healing the last injury on her friends. She drops to her knees, tired and drained. She flashes out of fairy form just to rest.)

Barbara: If they keep this up, I’m scared that we won’t be able to survive the next attack.

Bennett: I think we can make it. I mean, the bigger they are, the harder they fall, right? …Barbara? (She flops over onto his shoulder, sound asleep.) Barbara--

Keqing: Let her sleep. She’s been working hard both on and off the battlefield. (Bennett lowers his hand. He stays as still as possible so as to not wake Barbara.) 

Bennett: She shouldn’t have to be so scared. I know that luck is on our side. I’ve been making sure of it.

Kazuha: Don’t push yourself, Bennett. While we all appreciate your efforts, it’s not a good idea to exhaust yourself like this. Even you know that--

Bennett: That I gotta keep a balance, I know. I’ve been giving myself breaks, promise! …I just don’t think that Barbara should be scared. I don’t want her to be scared.

Ayaka: Aww, that’s sweet. (Lynette meows in agreement. Bennett flushes a bit, chuckling to try and draw attention away from it.) …I really wish that Lumine was here to see it. I hope that she’s okay.

Bennett: Well, she left with Xiao, right? He’s gotta be keeping her safe! I’m sure that they got away just fine. (Ayaka hums, but she still looks incredibly worried.)

Chapter 24: The Mystery of the Traveler

Aether: You’re being too hard on yourself.

Lumine: Huh?

Aether: I said you’re being too hard on yourself. I really don’t agree with what Dain did, but I get why he did it. And I get why you didn’t argue. But you still fought and told him how you felt. That took a lot of courage. It also took courage to fight the Fatui the way you have been. You’re not weak, Lumi. You just felt guilty, and you let that make you think you were weak.

 Lumine: So, what happened? Why are they going crazy? What’s going on with me? I haven’t been able to use my magic since…

Aether: What else happened when they attacked you on Earth?

Lumine: …Venti’s mask. Signora took Venti’s mask and his power as Mondstadt’s Nymph.

Aether: Nymphs are weird. It’s not a role that someone can take. They have to earn it, otherwise they can’t control the overflow of magic and power that comes with it.

Lumine: And what about me? I still don’t get what’s going on.

Aether: Nothing that doesn’t happen to everyone. You were doubting yourself, and you were afraid. You believed that what you loved could be taken away, and in your moment of vulnerability, you tricked yourself into thinking that what happened was that they took your magic. Actually, they just drained it. Like a bath.

Lumine: …a bath?

Aether: Yes. (Lumine snickers.) It’s the best that I could come up with! Look, think of the water as your magic, and the tub as you. The Fatui sort of pulled the plug, draining out most of the water-- uh, your magical energy. But over time, that tub’s gonna fill up again if you let the faucet run a little bit. Even if there's not much going in there, if you keep it running long enough, it will fill up.

Lumine: …I… think I get it. It’s a weird analogy, but I get it.

Chapter 25: The Final Battle

(Outside the wishing well. Lumine is leaning against it, looking up at the stars. The other girls come up to her.)

Ayaka: Lumine?

Lumine: Huh? Oh, hi. Sorry, I guess I lost track of time. (They walk over and sit down next to her.) I just needed a minute to breathe, that’s all. I’m okay, really.

Lynette: She’s lying.

Keqing: Absolutely.

Lumine: What? (A moment passes. Lumine sighs, looking back up at the stars.) Alright, it’s just… I’ve been thinking about a lot of things. So much has happened in the past few days, after all. But I also can’t help but think about other things, too. How insane the Fatui are, how amazing you guys are… (The girls smile.) About Dain, my brother, my past… It’s a lot, and there are still some things out there that I don’t understand.

Keqing: No kidding.

Barbara: No matter what you chose to do, Lumine, you’re not alone. (Lumine looks up at her.)

Ayaka: That’s right. We’re here… and we’ll find out everything together.

Lumine: Really? (The girls nod.) What about you, Lynette?

Lynette: It appears that you are stuck with me now. I know that you had an empty room in your dorm that needed to be filled.

Lumine: Wait, are you transferring to Alfea? (Lynette nods.)

Lynette: During that battle, I got in touch with my inner fairy. It was… strange, transforming like that. I spoke to Lady Caspar, Madame Yae and Lyney about it earlier. I’ll be transferring next semester. Lyney seemed to be acting strangely, but he wished me luck. I think he’s happy to see that I have friends like you.

Lumine: Good. Because you’re stuck with us. (The girls hug Lynette.)

Lynette: Are you sure?

Barbara: Absolutely!

Keqing: Certainly.

Ayaka: Of course.

Lumine: Whatever’s waiting out there… we can take it on together. None of us are alone anymore.

All: Yeah!

The Evolution of the Nail Industry

Over time, the nail industry evolved and adapted to changing trends and technology. An example of this is the revolutionary invention of the electric nail file in the 20th century. This invention made it possible to polish nails with greater speed and precision. Another note worthy invention is acrylic nails in the 1950s which allowed for the creation of longer and more durable nails.

In 1925 the lunar/half manicure was created by Jeff Pink the founder of ORLY cosmetic company. By the 1980s nail painting became envogue and has been extremely popular since then.

Influence by Women of Colour

According to history, women of colour contributed to the evolution of nail artistry. They were influential and the real pioneers of attractive and stylish nail designs. In the 70s Diana Ross and Donna Summer displayed long acrylics with reflective and bright metallics, this nail design choice can still be seen in the present day.

Flo-Jo Florence

A prominent sports person known as Griffith Joyner, a celebrity for the NAILS magazine in 1993, wore acrylic nails that drew a lot of attention to herself. She was seen wearing a white, gold, red, and blue colored set of nails. Her celebrity influence created a massive spotlight on the use of nails, which moved the industry forward for more prominence. 

During this decade, Flo-Jo’s nails increased in prominence. Other hip-hop celebrities like Lil’ Kim and Missy Elliot followed suit. They sported acrylic with bling, hand-painted designs, etc. This was a major inspiration to the many fashion ideas today.

The Nail Industry in the 90s

The nail industry experienced a different level of growth from the beginning of the decade. As it grew in some locations. Records have it that discount nail salons in the US migrated to Canada at that time.

In 1990, the governing body for nail manufacturers, the “Nail Manufacturers Council”; was created. In 1992, the “Nails Industry Association” emerged. In 1993, nails had photo designs. And in the following year, there were nail polishes that dried within minutes. In essence, the nail industry in the 90s had better evolution than in preceding years.

The Nail Industry Today

The evolution of the nail industry has brought nail experts to the limelight. In 2019, the nail industry was worth billions of dollars. To date, its worth has increased continually. A major contributing factor to its growth is the social media platforms on which it thrives. Research has it that about 93% of nail personnel use Pinterest. A lot of them also use popular platforms like YouTube and Instagram. Fashion runways have contributed to the growth of the industry due to the robust nature of visibility it offers. Also, celebrities are a significant contributing factor.

D- Don’t be afraid! Its okay to get nervous walking and taking photos around strangers. But as long as you're confident, people will be comfortable…or uncomfortable. Be threatening.

A- Be Aware of the element of surprise. You never know when something cool is gonna happen. Or if a bird shits on your lenses.

M- Move around, always find new interesting angles and never stay in one place. Get super low… just as Flo Rida advised.

P- Always be Prepared. Never forget your gear, batteries, tripods, snacks and weapon of choice! The government could find you at any moment.
