A principal of a Florida school has been forced to resign after a parent complained that students were exposed to pornography.
One of the greatest works of art ever to be produced by our species and there are some that see it as nothing more than pornography. That's just ... sad. So very sad.
Principal fired after students shown David statue

Media claimed parents deemed the lesson about the statue to be pornographic. This was clearly meant to hit back at Governor DeSantis's policies that ban porn in schools. Since Michelaneglo's work clearly isn't porn, the media tried to frame the story as if DeSantis's policies and conservative parents are ridiculously Puritan and actually limiting children's education.
But they're not, of course. DeSantis and conservatives literally just want to ban porn in library books. Because there was literally porn in library books. And that's something most parents would call a "problem."
Plus, the principal in question wasn't even fired for this lesson. Mark Hemingway of RealClearInvestigations sleuthed this out by reading past the headline of CNN's article, in which they admitted the principal wasn't fired for the lesson.
The article quoted the school board chair as saying, "She was not let go because of Michelangelo's David lesson."
Oh.
Weird how this keeps happening. Almost like this law has nothing to do with banning books and everything to do with keeping children from seeing pornography in schools. Weird.

A Florida principal who resigned after parents at her school decried the David statue as pornography has traveled to Florence, Italy, following invitations from the museum director and mayor of Florence. Hope Carrasquilla, the former principal of the Tallahassee Classical School, touched down in Florence on Friday and visited the Accademia Gallery with her statue resides. The visit follows her resignation in March after parents at the charter school complained about their children being shown the Renaissance statue of the biblical figure in the class. One of the parents condemned the statue of David as pornographic. A parent also said that she felt her child should not be viewing those she was point-blank upset, Carrasquilla told the Tallahassee Democrat at the time of the incident. Carrasquilla told HuffPost that the usual protocol is to notify parents by letter when students are to be shown classical artwork series of missives was not sent out; they were shown the David sculpture. After the governing board informed her to step down or be fired. Tallahassee Classical School is affiliated with Hillsdale College, a Michigan-based private conservative Christian institution. According to its website, the school aims to train the minds and improve the hearts of young people through a content-rich classical education in the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue. After media reports emerged of the resignation, the mayor of Florence pushed back against the outcry towards Carrasquilla. Hollberg, the director of Accademia Gallery, echoed similar sentiments, telling the Associated Press: “To think that David could be pornographic means truly not understanding the contents of the Bible, not understanding the Western culture, and not understanding Renaissance art.” Hollberg, photographed standing alongside Carrasquilla on Friday as they admired the statue, told USA Today that hosting the former principal was an immense pleasure. Carrasquilla’s 17-year old son Quinn, who had to stay behind in Tallahassee due to his Advanced Placement exams, told USA Today that his family was enjoying their visit. “They’re really enjoying it a lot, who wouldn’t enjoy Italy?” he said.

‘Catastrophe’ for Poor New Yorkers as Pandemic Food Aid Ends (NYT) For nearly three years, New Yorkers have been able to take advantage of a pandemic-era lifeline that provided people like Jocelyne Grandu, a retired French teacher who lives in Harlem, with an extra $80 each month in food stamp benefits. But with that federal assistance ending this month, more than 30 million people across the country are expected to receive less help. In New York City, more than 1.5 million people, or nearly one in five residents, could receive smaller food stamp benefits, according to nonprofit leaders—reflecting a loss of at least $160 million total in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits each month. “What we’re seeing is really a catastrophe for well over a million New Yorkers,” said David G. Greenfield, executive director of Met Council, a prominent Jewish nonprofit that oversees 100 food pantries. “We’re hearing from our clients that they’re rationing things like medication, they’re not going to be able to pay their rent and they can no longer pay for things like child care.” As Mayor Eric Adams and the City Council negotiate next year’s budget, Mr. Greenfield has called on the city to set aside nearly $13 million in emergency funding for food pantries, where demand for aid has surged: Visits to food pantries in the city rose by more than two-thirds last year compared with 2019.
Armed Woman Kills 6 in Nashville School (NYT) A heavily armed woman entered a Christian school in Nashville on Monday morning and fatally shot three children and three staff members before she was shot and killed by the police, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said. According to the initial findings of an investigation, the woman, who was 28 and lived in the Nashville area, was “at one point a student” at the school. The school, the Covenant School, was founded in 2001, and serves about 200 students from preschool through 6th grade, according to its website. The woman entered the building through a side door, armed with two assault-style rifles and a handgun, and went from the first floor to the second floor, firing “multiple shots,” Don Aaron, a spokesman for the Police Department said. When officers arrived, they heard gunshots on the second floor, he said. Once there, members of a five-person team saw the woman firing, Mr. Aaron said. Two members of the team opened fire, killing her, he said.
The gun that divides a nation (Washington Post) The AR-15 wasn’t supposed to be a bestseller. The rugged, powerful weapon was originally designed as a soldiers’ rifle in the late 1950s. “An outstanding weapon with phenomenal lethality,” an internal Pentagon report raved. But few gunmakers saw a semiautomatic version of the rifle as a product for ordinary people. It didn’t seem suited for hunting. It seemed like overkill for home defense. Gun executives doubted many buyers would want to spend their money on one. Today, the AR-15 is the best-selling rifle in the United States, industry figures indicate. About 1 in 20 U.S. adults—or roughly 16 million people—own at least one AR-15. It also has become a stark symbol of the nation’s gun violence epidemic. Ten of the 17 deadliest U.S. mass shootings since 2012 have involved AR-15s. And today, the 128th mass shooting of 2023 took place at a Christian school in Nashville, with 3 children and 3 adults killed by an assault weapon.
Is the David porn? Come see, Italians tell Florida parents (AP) The Florence museum housing Michelangelo’s Renaissance masterpiece the David on Sunday invited parents and students from a Florida charter school to visit after complaints about a lesson featuring the statue forced the principal to resign. Florence Mayor Dario Nardella also tweeted an invitation for the principal to visit so he can personally honor her. Confusing art with pornography was “ridiculous,” Nardella said. The board of the Tallahassee Classical School pressured Principal Hope Carrasquilla to resign last week after an image of the David was show to a sixth-grade art class. The school has a policy requiring parents to be notified in advance about “controversial” topics being taught. The incredulous Italian response highlighted how the U.S. culture wars are often perceived in Europe, where despite a rise in right-wing sentiment and governance, the Renaissance and its masterpieces, even its naked ones, are generally free of controversy. Sunday’s front page of the Italian daily publication Corriere della Sera featured a cartoon by its leading satirist depicting David with his genitals covered by an image of Uncle Sam and the word “Shame.”
Police using ‘excessive force’ at France protests, rights groups say (Washington Post) Police in France have responded to a wave of recent protests with heavy-handed and sometimes brutal tactics, according to local and international rights groups, prompting calls for an independent investigation into allegations of police brutality as the country grapples with its worst unrest in years. Protesters opposed to government efforts to raise the retirement age have destroyed cars and buildings, burned trash and newspaper kiosks, and clashed with law enforcement in cities such as Paris and Bordeaux in recent days. But the forceful and apparently indiscriminate nature of the police response, including arbitrary arrests and the use of violence against peaceful demonstrators and reporters, has also drawn scrutiny. “There are now hundreds of testimonies of police brutality that cannot be justified by the law,” said Sebastian Roché, a professor at Sciences-Po Grenoble who researches French policing. Top human rights officials at the United Nations and the Council of Europe, which is headquartered in Strasbourg, France, have also weighed in, condemning what they said was excessive use of force by law enforcement officers.
Pray for rain: Spanish farmers hold unique Mass amid drought (AP) When Josep Altarriba looks across his parched fields, the Spanish farmer can’t remember a time of such widespread drought in Catalonia. If it doesn’t rain in the next two weeks, he says there’s little chance of saving the harvest. What can be done? For the mountain villagers of L’Espunyola, the answer is divine intervention. On Sunday, around 250 residents brought back the faded practice of a special Mass and procession to pray to Our Lady of the Torrents, a local virgin associated with rainfall. “It’s not a magic act, it is an act of trust,” Bishop Francesc Conesa told The Associated Press. Three years of very low rainfall and high temperatures put Spain officially into long-term drought, the country’s weather agency said this month. Last year was Spain’s sixth driest—and the hottest since records began in 1961.
Myanmar army leader calls for decisive action to crush foes (AP) As Myanmar’s military put on an annual show of strength Monday, its top leader told its assembled ranks they need to take decisive action against those fighting army rule of the country. Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing spoke at a military parade on Armed Forces Day. At sunrise, members of all service branches marched in mass formations onto a huge parade ground in the capital, Naypyitaw, backed by armored vehicles, missiles and artillery as well as fighter jets and helicopters flying overhead. Myanmar’s military has been accused of indiscriminate killings of civilians as it engages in major offensives to suppress the armed resistance opposed to its takeover of the government two years ago.
In China, Marriage Rates Are Down and ‘Bride Prices’ Are Up (NYT) The 30 women sat in wooden chairs, facing each other in a rectangular formation. At the front of the room was the ruling Communist Party’s hammer and sickle logo, with a sign declaring the meeting’s purpose: “Symposium of unmarried young women of the right age.” Officials in Daijiapu, a town in southeast China, had gathered the women to sign a public pledge to reject high “bride prices,” referring to a wedding custom in which the man gives money to his future wife’s family as a condition of engagement. The local government, describing the event earlier this year in a notice on its website, said it hoped people would abandon such backward customs and do their part to “start a new civilized trend.” As China faces a shrinking population, officials are cracking down on an ancient tradition of betrothal gifts to try to promote marriages, which have been on the decline. Known in Mandarin as caili, the payments have skyrocketed across the country in recent years—averaging $20,000 in some provinces—making marriage increasingly unaffordable. The payments are typically paid by the groom’s parents. Official campaigns like the Daijiapu event sidestep the fact that the problem is partly of the government’s own making. During the four decades of the one-child policy, parents often preferred sons, resulting in a lopsided gender ratio that has intensified competition for wives.
North Korea test-fires 2 more missiles as US sends carrier (AP) A nuclear-powered U.S. aircraft carrier and its battle group began exercises with South Korean warships on Monday, hours after North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles in an apparent protest of the allies’ expanding drills. The seventh missile test this month underscored heightening tensions in the region as both the North’s weapons tests and the U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises have intensified in a cycle of tit-for-tat. The launches may have been timed for the arrival of the USS Nimitz and its strike group, including a guided missile cruiser and two destroyers, which engaged in air defense exercises and other drills with South Korean warships in waters near Jeju island.
Iran’s Truce With Saudi Arabia Heals Rift, but Not Its Reeling Economy (WSJ) Iran’s move to reset diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia was a radical break from years of enmity between the two Middle East rivals, but it hasn’t been enough to prop up its struggling economy. Before China stepped in to broker the deal earlier this month, Iran’s currency, the rial, had lost a fifth of its value over the last two weeks of February to hit a record low, adding to the problems besetting the ruling clerics here. Inflation was already rising, hitting 59% late last year, and talks to revive the 2015 nuclear deal and get some relief from U.S. sanctions were all but dead. European powers had given up on a separate mechanism to transfer funds to Iran for humanitarian aid. Prisoner-swap negotiations with the U.S. weren’t progressing either, keeping billions of dollars in overseas bank accounts out of reach. The Americans had also begun cracking down on flows of hard currency from neighboring Iraq, removing an important pressure valve. But while news of the deal helped ease the strain on the rial in the short term, pushing it off its historic low of more than 600,000 to the dollar, the currency has since lost value as the reality sinks in that, even with the Saudi deal, the country has few prospects for a turnaround unless it can escape sanctions over its nuclear program or build closer economic ties with China and Russia.
Mass protests erupt after Netanyahu fires defense chief (AP) Tens of thousands of Israelis poured into the streets of cities across the country Sunday night in a spontaneous outburst of anger after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu abruptly fired his defense minister for challenging the Israeli leader’s judicial overhaul plan. Protesters in Tel Aviv blocked a main highway and lit large bonfires, while police scuffled with protesters who gathered outside Netanyahu’s private home in Jerusalem. Unions are threatening to paralyze the economy. Medical strikes are underway and workers shut down outgoing flights at the main airport. (Later, Netanyahu announced that he would pause the judicial changes.)
Many rely on radio broadcasts in Zimbabwe and across Africa (AP) Just the size of his hand, the radio set hung in the busy marketplace stall is essential to Mark Nyabanda. “I can’t do without it,” said the 25-year old, taking a break from selling fertilizer in Mbare market in the capital, Harare, to listen to a radio weather report warning of possible floods. Radio bulletins also provide him with information on disease outbreaks, political news and entertainment, he said. In many Western countries, conventional radio has been overtaken by streaming, podcasts and on-demand content accessed via smartphones and computers. But in many of Africa’s 54 countries, with a combined population of 1.3 billion people, traditional radio sets are widely used, highlighting the digital divide between rich countries and those still struggling to have reliable internet.
Clowns converge on Orlando for funny business (NPR) This week, dozens of clowns descended on Orlando, Florida for the 40th annual World Clown Association convention. But these aren't your scary clowns, the ones you might know from scary movies. These are professional clowns who work in big circuses and county fairs and those who volunteer in local hospitals, senior centers and schools. Members of the WCA hail from 35 different countries and their one purpose is simple, to "bring happiness, joy, fun and comic relief to children of all ages." Robin Bryan, who goes by Pinkie Bee, is president of the WCA. She mostly volunteers at local hospitals with her hubby. "My husband and I have over 1,500 volunteer hours for Wolfson Children's Hospital," said Bryan. "So we go in every week and we do our best to give smiles and tears and laughter and that's what is important about being a clown, right?"

    Mabel Walker Willebrandt
Born May 23rd, 1889
Died April 6th, 1963 at age 73
She was born in Woodsdale, Kansas as Mabel Elizabeth Walker.
Her family were farmers
She spent her early years traveling between prairie towns from Oklahoma to Missouri
Her father David was a local newspaper editor
She used to help him set the type for print
She was expelled from Park College in Parksville (a Presbyterian college), Missouri for being outspoken
She questioned the validity of a “virgin birth”
Reportedly she won the debate
In 1906 she began teaching in Buckley, Michigan
During this time she
Was almost lost in a blizzard
Trapped by a forest fire
Was threatened by a student with a knife
In 1910 she married Arthur Willebrandt, the principal
Together they moved to Phoenix, Arizona while Arthur recovered from tuberculosis
Mabel graduated from Arizona State University in 1911
Around this time she became severely hearing impaired and wore a hearing aid in each ear
She supposedly fixed her hair to hide them.
In 1912, they moved to Los Angeles where Mabel taught school during the day and took law classes at night
In 1916, she graduated from the University of Southern California with a masters in law
While completing her degree, Mabel began pro bono work in local police courts for mostly prostitution cases
She argued 2,000 cases as the city’s first female public defender
Her efforts led to courts permitting testimony from both women and men in these cases
This meant the male clients had to appear in court (in front of the press) as well as the female defenders
She successfully campaigned for the enactment of a revised community property statue at the state level (which involves property rights in marriages)
She was instrumental in getting the police to stop nickelodeon owners from preying on young girls during the “Rosebud Baby Case”
Apparently, the men were taking advantage of young girls during the movies
After graduation, she opened her own practice in downtown Los Angeles with Fred Horowitz (he built the famous hotel Chateau Marmont)
During World War I, she served as head of the Legal Advisory Board for draft cases
John Shepherd, perhaps the only man she really loved, who was killed in World War I.
In 1920, she moved her folks out west to be closer to her
In 1921, at 32, she was recommended by Frank Doherty (her old law professor), Senator Hiram Johnson, and all the judges in Southern California for the position of Assistant Attorney General under President Harding
Making her the highest-ranking women in the US federal government at the time and the first woman to head the Tax Division.
However, part of the issue is that no one wanted the job
It had no political advantage
It was a position that had to enforce unpopular laws
Her duties included overseeing federal taxation, federal prisons, and matters relating to the Volstead Act (the Prohibition Act)
She established the first female federal prison, Alderson federal prison in West Virginia
At the time, female prisons were too full to hold all inmates
If there was not enough space they would be housed with male inmates or otherwise alternatively punished
Sexual exploitation of women in the prison system was very high at the time
The prison was modeled as a boarding school offering classes for work-oriented fields
It had no armed guards or fences
Weirdly, still segregated
Things weren’t all great, however
In her 1929 book, The Inside of Prohibition, she described her problems
The law was too weak to do the job
The man in charge was not up to the task
She was only given volunteers to help make arrests
Things were so bad, one of her early arrests was a group that actually fielded a baseball team called the BOOTLEGGERS
She helped convinced the state department to give her boats and crews to apprehend alcohol coming into the country by boat
Reportedly, she met with the Treasury’s Prohibition unit, the US Coast Guard, and the Customs Service once and weeks later Congress okayed $11 million dollars for speed boats and equipment
She might have been the only person working to enforce prohibition
She said, “At one time it was quite apparent that no real effort was being made to put an end to such open defiance of our laws. Liquor runners operated off Florida practically in the open, in broad daylight, with little or no interference. There for years the prosecuting office and the prohibition agents engaged equally in the game of evasion of responsibility.”
In 1923, she successfully brought down the ‘Big Four of Savannah’
Reportedly the largest bootlegging ring in the US
She brought in George Remus, nicknamed ‘King of the Bootleggers’ and supposedly the inspiration for Jay Gatsby
Mabel came under a lot of trouble at one point for arresting Helen Morgan, a popular singer who had been reportedly duped into running a speakeasy
She regularly made the society magazines as a bit of a villain
She also argued to reform prisons for young offenders
She is credited with starting the prison work programs for male prisons
She started the first record keeping system for federal inmate populations
In 1924, Mabel and her husband Arthur got divorced
They were separated in 1916
Her mother-in-law moved in with Mabel and Arthur but Mabel financially supported the whole family
Reportedly because after putting Arthur through law school, he was unwilling to pay his share of expenses
In 1925, she adopted a two-year-old daughter named Dorothy Rae
Whom she raised with her friends
Feminism, Sexuality, and Politics by Estella B. Freedman
The book mentions that this was a more common practice at the time for career women that wanted a family.
Her parents took over when she was in Washington
Back in Prohibition, however, Mabel prosecuted 48,734 cases between 1924 and 1925, of which resulted in 39,072 convictions
278 cases went to the Supreme Court
She argued 40 of those cases
In 1927, she devised the plan to catch gangsters with tax evasion and in 1931 successfully prosecuted Al Capone
She recommended J. Edgar Hoover to head the FBI
In 1928, she campaigned for Republican candidate Herbert Hoover
To do this, she would address Methodist ministers and slam Hoover’s Democrat opponent, Al Smith as a ‘wet’ candidate
She began timing speakeasy raids to coincide with the Democratic convention
She was recognized as a major force behind getting Hoover elected
She took political help anywhere she could get it including the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and the Ku Klux Klan saying, “I have no objection to people dressing up in sheets if they enjoy that sort of thing.”
For her service, she expected to be appointed Attorney General but was snubbed
In 1928, she resigned her post and returned to private practice
Mabel’s first case outside of the government was for California Fruit Industries that made wine and went on to serve as a lobbyist for the industry
CFI’s first big product push with her was Vine-Glo
Which was a concentrate that if added to water and sugar and left alone for two months made wine at home
Her casework set the foundation for the basic interpretations of the 16th and 18th amendments
In 1930, Mabel successfully argued for Frederick Albert Cook’s release from prison
He had been falsely imprisoned when several of his business partners committed fraud
Because his lawyer, Joseph Weldon Bailey, had a personal problem with the judge, he lost the case
Mabel managed to get him off his 14-year sentence in 7
Cook claimed to be the first explorer to reach the North Pole
In 1950, she served as counsel to the Screen Directors Guild
She defended the studios during the “Red Scare” and Joe McCarthy
She represented Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Aviation Corp. of America
Her famous clients include
Louis B. Mayer
Jean Harlow
Clark Gable
Jeanette MacDonald
She also began defending bootleggers she had helped put away
She went on to pioneer the fields of aviation and radio law
She was the first woman to chair a committee for the American Bar Association for aeronautical law
She got her pilot’s license and promoted air travel with Amelia Earhart and Jacqueline Cochoran (created the Women’s Auxillary Army Corps and Women Airforce Service Pilot organizations and was the first woman to break the sound barrier)
She received an Honorary Doctorate from the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce
Due to intense criticism of her role in Al Smith losing the presidency, as her rhetoric was seen as anti-Catholic, she converted to Catholicism
Later in life, she worked to destroy many of her personal records (especially from when she was Attorney General)
She, in fact, was overlooked by several early women’s history studies as she purposely erased many of her personal histories
Which is why much of what we know comes from her legal work
Mabel Walker Willebrandt died of lung cancer in Riverside, California
She was survived by her adopted daughter, Dorothy Rae (Van Dyke)
Her lifelong friend, Judge John J. Sirica, was quoted as saying, “If Mabel had worn trousers, she could have been president.”
Nicknames
“First Legal Lady of the Land”
“Prohibition Portia” (which is a joke from Julius Caesar–it’s Brutus’s wife)
“Deborah of the Drys”
“Mrs. Firebrand.”
Fun facts
She owned a farm in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Once advised a prostitute she worked for on “going straight”
Mabel looked over her books and said to keep working six more months
Then ended up footing the rest of the bill herself to get the woman and her sons into a nice home
Quotes
“Give me the authority and let me have my pick of 300 men and I’ll make this country as dry as it is humanly possible. There’s one way it can be done – get at the source of supply. I know them and I know how they could be cut off. I have no patience with this policy of going after the hip-pocket and speakeasy cases. That’s like trying to dry up the Atlantic Ocean with a blotter.”
In reference to herself “an instrument of God”

Donald Trump needs the GOP Health Care Bill to pass
President Donald Trump is now at a point where he has to put in action what his words promised. He campaigned hard that he was the dealmaker and now it's his time to step up to the plate with the GOP health care bill that's under fire already. When you continually say that everyone in Washington D.C. is dumb and makes bad deals and praise yourself for being smart and the master of the deal, you better live up to it. People believed his words as government officials had over promised too many times and voters were just fed up with their empty promises. A new health-care bill that aims to remove several major tenets of the Affordable Care Act and replace them with more conservative proposals entered the picture and wasn't so pleasing. The legislation, which two House committees have begun to debate today, is already under fire from conservatives dissatisfied with the expansion of Medicaid remaining in place and from moderates concerned about penalizing people who fall off the insurance rolls. Less than 24 hours after the legislation was first unveiled, some members of the House Freedom Caucus, the GOP's most conservative wing, were declaring it DOA. https://twitter.com/scottwongDC/status/839306920473292801 https://twitter.com/DavidWright_CNN/status/839507429419270145 This bill can turn into a major headache and reckoning for the Republican party if it actually goes down. Their base would be very angry, but it could also alienate all the independents who voted for change with Trump thinking that he could actually be the outlier to change things. https://twitter.com/jaketapper/status/839268783382491137 Trump know that after the disastrous immigration ban, this bill needs to pass whether it's a bad bill or not. He knows this is his real test now. Sadly, this is how it goes in Washington where bad bills get pushed through hurting Americans all in the name of saving face. We've already seen the lengths Donald Trump will go to look strong and competent. The question is will American be able to survive this. If Trump can't make those deals happen, then what is he left with? He is just a guy who says and does things you don't really like. To his credit, Trump seems to grasp the stakes here. He huddled with members of the House Republican whip team on Tuesday night. Wednesday afternoon, he gathered conservatives at the White House. Tonight, Trump hosts Sen. Ted Cruz, a 2016 primary challenger and a vocal opponent of the current health-care replacement law, for dinner. (I'd love to be a fly on the wall for THAT one.) “We are going to have a full-court press,” confirmed White House press secretary Sean Spicer in his daily news briefing Wednesday. "If anyone can get a deal done, it's Donald Trump." Make no mistake: This is a time of proving for Trump. He ran on a unique ability to cut deals. He can't fail in his first chance to do just that. As conservatives revolt over Republican health care legislation, Donald Trump faces a crucial first test of his presidency: Can he translate his bully pulpit and popularity with conservative voters into a legislative win? For Trump, it is a new arena five rocky weeks into his presidency. Thus far the accomplishments he has notched have been carried out via executive authority or appointments ratified by the Senate, often overshadowed by self-inflicted distraction. Now the Washington newcomer finds himself in the more complex realm of legislative deal-making, as GOP leaders push forward their long-promised plan to undo former President Barack Obama's health care law and replace it with a conservative blueprint that shrinks the federal role and reduces assistance to help voters buy coverage. With the plan under attack from conservatives as well as medical groups and the AARP on Wednesday, congressional Republican leaders made clear they will rely on Trump to corral restive lawmakers and bring them in line. "For a lot of them they maybe haven't felt the inertia that comes with Air Force One landing in their district," Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, said Wednesday before his panel met to begin voting on the legislation. "I think when the president of the United States, who campaigned on repeal and replace, says this is the repeal-and-replace bill ... I think the dynamic changes." Trump has kept an arm's length from legislative maneuvering on Capitol Hill thus far, sending mixed signals that have led to repeated bouts of confusion about what exactly he supports. Yet with more than 26 million Twitter followers, he can sway GOP lawmakers with a tweet. Before the president was even sworn in, Republicans backed off plans to gut an independent ethics office after he objected over Twitter. On Tuesday, Republican House members who are part of the GOP vote-counting team met with the president at the White House, with several saying later they were pleasantly surprised by the president's level of engagement on the health bill. He made clear he is fully behind the plan and willing to engage with individual lawmakers to get them on board. Hours after the meeting wrapped up Trump made good on that commitment with a tweet aimed at Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., an outspoken critic of the House health legislation. "I feel sure that my friend @RandPaul will come along with the new and great health care program because he knows Obamacare is a disaster!" the president wrote. "He said he's 100 percent behind it, he's going to be very engaged, he's going to dedicate as much time as he can possibly do to it," said Rep. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., who was in Tuesday's meeting with Trump. "The White House and the president have the largest pulpit in the world," said Rep. Tom Reed, R-N.Y., another lawmaker in Tuesday's meeting. "And to have that spotlight on you as a member, you better be able to explain your position and you better be able to explain why you're supporting Obamacare and not working with us to repeal it." In their early outreach, Trump and Vice President Mike Pence met Wednesday with conservative leaders who have raised objections about the bill. But the activists emerged from the White House with some optimism. "He heard our concerns, our very serious concerns with the House draft bill," said Club for Growth President David McIntosh. "I'm encouraged that the president indicated they're pushing to make changes in the bill." Trump also dined with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a onetime GOP presidential rival and conservative luminary, his wife, Heidi, and their two daughters. Cruz said it was "principally a social dinner, but I'm sure the conversation will turn to the repeal of Obamacare." Cruz said he has serious concerns about the House bill as drafted and doesn't think it could get through the Senate, but hopes to work with the administration to improve it. Trump's team is deploying three former House conservatives - Pence, budget chief Mick Mulvaney and Health Secretary Tom Price - to persuade some of the most skeptical members of the GOP caucus, including members of the Republican Study Committee and the Freedom Caucus. Price, a former Georgia congressman and orthopedic surgeon, was dispatched to the White House briefing room on Tuesday afternoon to make the case for the bill. Pence met with members of the Freedom Caucus on Tuesday, and hit the airwaves on Wednesday with local television interviews in swing states Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Florida. Rep. Mark Walker of North Carolina, head of the Republican Study Committee, said Wednesday after hearing from Mulvaney that the legislation was moving in the right direction. And Mulvaney went so far as to invite members of the House Freedom Caucus to join him for a night at the White House bowling lane next week. Even some holdouts acknowledged that such pressure could make a difference. "I would be the first to admit that calls from the president will certainly influence members and to suggest otherwise would be to ignore politics," said Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina, chairman of the Freedom Caucus, whose members have been speaking out against the bill. "Whether you fully supported Donald Trump or not, getting a call from President Trump obviously makes a difference."
