Floral Street - Arizona Bloom
Okay I love this and it’s hitting a nostalgia vein that I’m still trying to place. The musk note is not offensive like it was for Magical Moon. Smells just as good on my skin as it does on the scrap paper I tested it on.
I think this may be reminding me of classic by Abercrombie & Fitch which I went through a phase with at a friend’s beach house in 2008 where I paired it with Bobbi Brown Beach - this smells a lot like that combination.
It’s a perfect summer scent that isn’t dolce & gabbana light blue, which I like a lot, but so many people wear it.
Unlike other coconut fragrances this doesn’t veer into juvenile territory. Now that it’s been on my skin for a little the bright beachy quality has gone down and it’s soft, wood, fig leaf, and oak moss. I’m definitely buying a bottle of this

Arizona Bloom by Floral Street
Arizona Bloom by Floral Street is a Amber Spicy fragrance for women and men. This is a new fragrance. Arizona Bloom was launched in 2020. The nose behind this fragrance is Jérôme Epinette.
--
There are maybe 2 or 3 occasions in my life where I have washed perfume off before leaving the house and I am officially adding this to the list. Musky. Lactonic. Overly chemical. There was nothing about this scent I liked even enough to give it the benefit of the doubt for a day.
I checked the reviews and it seems to be a true variation. Some people loved it, finding fresh notes and coconut. To others it smelled like burning wood.
So far I have tried 2 Floral Street scents and while one of them was pretty nice, this one was intolerable to me. 5 more to go... Wish me luck.

la fiesta de los angeles
Fascinated by the 1894 La Fiesta de Los Angeles after reading about it in William Deverell’s 2004 book Whitewashed Adobe: The Rise of Los Angeles and the Remaking of Its Mexican Past.
57: First came the “Angelitas” float, festooned with Anglo children dressed as floral angels. In quick succession came the desert float, covered in cacti and succulents; the floral ship, a Spanish galleon manned by school- children; the missions, a float decorated with the flowers and vines brought to the New World by Franciscan padres; a mountain float of hilly terrain, complete with a rushing waterfall; the fruits and flowers of the irrigation float, showing the assembled crowds in Los Angeles streets “the actual results” of irrigation in helping to make the greater Southwest bloom; and the Flower Queen and her court, twenty or thirty young girls dressed as butterflies.
Other Fiesta floats included the “Busted Boom Float,” a recreated interior from a real estate office, its broker and agent stalls empty, one sole and dejected realtor sitting with nothing to do.
Adding to the exoticism of the affair was the Indian float, complete with fifty Yuma Indians brought to Los Angeles from Arizona, each paid a dollar to participate. Southern California Indian commissioner Francisco Estudillo, who had been contacted by Meyberg about Indian participation in La Fiesta, had at first balked at the suggestion, responding that he would “furnish Indians only on orders from the War Department at Washington.” Meyberg persisted, assuring the commissioner that the Indians would be well taken care of and safeguarded from what Estudillo referred to as the city’s “demoralizing associations.” That these native peoples were imported from their pueblo to play ancient Aztecs only heightened the event’s fantastic qualities.
Fiesta planners worked to establish the pageant’s diversity as a kind of racial rapprochement, up to a point. The presence of Native Americans bespoke inclusion, but mostly an attraction to exotic spectacle, as did Chinese marchers and floats. Fiesta planners were proud of this, boasting that “not many cities could produce representatives of four out of the five human races— Caucasians, Mongolians, Africans, and red men from the residents of its immediate locality.” Also present were those representatives of the region’s “Spanish American” population. These were most obvious as the “gay caballeros of the Spanish period” who “rode their fiery steeds with silver- mounted saddles and bridles and costumes of brilliant coloring,” as one Fiesta planner later recalled.
68: The Chinese community balked at appearing in the second Fiesta; per- haps the overwhelmingly patronizing, even hostile, air that had accompa- nied Anglo commentary about their participation in the 1894 Fiesta exhausted their patience. But Fiesta planners recognized the touristic need for spectacle. They pleaded with the Chinese. An argument was made that the Fiesta was a table of multiple legs: one each represented by merchants, capitalists, manufacturers, and the Chinese, as if Asian ethnicity were itself an occupational category (which of course it very nearly was, given the restriction of Chinese to particular, and particularly feminized, jobs). According to this weird logic of civic balance, a Fiesta without the Chinese float would tilt toward chaos. The Chinese could help maintain order if they again joined the parade. They did, in grand style. The Chinese dragon in the 1895 Fiesta was eight hundred feet long; it took one hundred and fifty men, walking side to side, back and forth, to make it come to life.

Neon Rose by Floral Street
Neon Rose by Floral Street is a Floral fragrance for women and men. Neon Rose was launched in 2017. The nose behind this fragrance is Jérôme Epinette. Top notes are Apple Blossom, Bergamot, Cassis and Sichuan Pepper; middle notes are Rose, Egyptian Jasmine, Cyclamen, Angelica and Juniper Berries; base notes are Peach, White Cedar Extract and Amber.

I thought this would be a fun scent to try on Valentine's day as I often associate roses with love. Unlike Floral Streets Arizona Bloom however this scent seemed very faint. I could smell it when I pressed my nose to my wrist but that was all. I don't want to be enveloped in a cloud of scent but I wear perfumes so I can smell them so if I can't that feels like a waste.
That being said the scent is pleasant enough so I may save it for a bedtime perfume and see if it will give me sweet dreams. I added on a bit of Perry Ellis 360° Purple for what I hope is an overall light and lovely floral aroma

Making scents of outer space
Nina Lanza expected Antarctica to be cold. After all, she and her seven fellow meteorite hunters weren’t allowed to board their transport in New Zealand until they’d proved they’d packed all the necessary gear. And she’d been warned about the endless daylight at their location smack dab in between McMurdo Station and the South Pole. But, as she says, “People try to tell you what it’s like, but it’s hard to describe because it’s so different from your everyday life.”
Lanza, a scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory who works on the Mars Curiosity rover team, was in Antarctica with this group as part of NASA’s Antarctic Search for Meteorites Project. Antarctica is like the solar system’s asteroid landfill. Pieces of the Moon, Mars, the asteroid Vesta, and fragments of the solar system’s formation are buried under the ice. For five weeks, Lanza would hunt for meteorites, sleeping in close-quarter tents around a group of like-minded explorers.
It was, in essence, a bit like a trip to Mars. The Antarctic terrain in that region is lifeless and bitterly cold. And sure, there’s snow and ice as far as the eye can see, but for all intents, it’s also a desert. At night, Lanza says, the wind would howl and the ice would crack and she would swear there was a plane coming in. But it was like an auditory pareidolia, the propensity in humans to find familiar patterns (like faces in clouds) in random input.
She’d wake up in the middle of the night, panicked that she’d broken the strict schedule of the expedition, only to find out it was still 2 a.m. This is just what happens when the sky tricks you with a constant twilight glow.
Sensory Starvation One day, one of her tentmates had an odd little self-care package from home. The moment opened Lanza up to something she hadn’t known was missing. “I didn’t notice it until my tentmate Morgan, a veteran of this project, had a bunch of essential oils with her and I was like ‘what is this hippie nonsense’,” Lanza says.
And that’s when it hit her. In Antarctica, the cold lifelessness robs people of sensory inputs we all take for granted — especially the sense of smell. Morgan, the tentmate, would play rain sounds and sniff on floral smells.
“It was so powerful and familiar, and I realized I had not smelled that or heard the sound of rain and was starved of that for two months,” Lanza says.
From that moment on, she’s had her mind on one thing future Mars explorers might be missing out on: the smells of everyday life, whether that’s a May lilac bloom or the strong, complex sting of compost. Like fresh veggies or talking to family in real-time, our sense of smell is a forgotten link to home.
Outer Space Lip Balm Tanya Harrison, director of research at Arizona State University’s Space Technology and Science (NewSpace) Initiative, has been putting her lab to work on smells. It’s a two way street, both distilling the smells of Earth for future explorers as well as trying to capture the smells of space.
“ASU’s ‘smell lab’ was created in our School of Life Science to help understand things like how odors affect memory, and how our sense of smell changes due to age or disease (Alzheimer’s in particular),” Harrison says. “The lab uses honey bees and fruit flies to help us understand the sense of smell, as they are highly affected by scent.”
Harrison’s lab at ASU has also teamed up with Brian Smith of the School of Life Science to develop the Five Senses in Space project. Just as old songs take us back to early memories, an old smell can bring back a rush of memories.
The first smell lab project looked at the gas cloud Sagittarius B2 near the center of the Milky Way. The Spanish Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique telescope had detected the presence of ethyl formate. Were you to somehow grab and bottle parts of this gas cloud and bring it on board some far-future spaceship, you’d probably notice something familiar: the smell of rum. If you’re more of a mouthbreather, you might even taste a hint of raspberry.
So they recreated these clouds in the form of a lip balm as a sort of outreach project, calling it Centre of the Galaxy.
The Scent of Apollo But since then, the nascent lab has taken meteorites like those Lanza and crew were hunting for. They want to draw out the possible smells of the Moon or Mars, in the former case to jog the memories of the few remaining people who’ve ever stepped foot on another world.
“Ideally we’d like to create the scent of the Moon and then get one of the remaining moonwalkers to smell it and let us know how close it smells to actually being there — well, at least the scents they described when getting back into the modules, which might’ve come from lunar dust,” Harrison says.
Creating a smell involves a process called solid phase microextraction. You put the smelly thing in a jar, and attach a filament to capture the smell emitted. Then you throw that into a couple machines to analyze the scent and figure out what molecules are giving off a particular smell. This, in turn, gives an idea of how to recreate a smell.
A simple “scratch and sniff” type of scent strip might last a couple days, but putting it into an oil — like, say, a lip balm — can make the volatile chemicals that create smell last significantly longer.
The smell lab could eventually turn to packing up a few chemicals in an oily form for the early stages of a Mars mission, but putting a smell lab on board could turn out even better.
“To maximize shelf life for astronauts, I’d imagine creating scented oils would provide the longest life,” Harrison says. “But as long as you’ve got the recipe for the scent … and the components needed to artificially create that scent, you could ideally create more as you go.”
It may be part of a suite of sensory experiences from home provided for future astronauts. NASA is already working with Microsoft on its HoloLens platform to create augmented reality experiences for astronauts. That might include audio messages from home. And maybe an astronaut longing for a hot summer day might crack open up a vial and remember the smell of fresh cut grass.
“I really think that my tentmate was onto something — I would bring essential oils with a variety of smells and a bunch of different sounds from Earth,” Lanza says as advice to future Mars explorers.
After all, in those close quarters, it could be just the thing to bring you home on an especially homesick day.
