You know, I'm glad that I've actually become conscious of potential cultural appropriation and taken steps to figure out whether it is or not. That said, boy it's easier being ignorant.
#I just want to wear a Kurdish-patterned head scarf#They have such beautiful floral designs#I just need to make sure there isn't specific cultural contexts for wearing them beyond “it keeps the sun off my head” which is common for#well. A lot of West Asian headdresses (not all but like...a not insignificant portion)#cultural appropriation

Everybody asks me what’s my ideal wedding and well it’s actually just the disturbing marriage scene from Salo the 120 Days of Sodom.
Not the whole “sadistic aristocrats kidnapping and torturing youth” part but just the getting married in a silver silk dress with a matching floral headdress and bouquet in front of a bored nude audience in an Italian mansion/villa/castle while appearing grim and depressed. I feel like Pasolini was channeling Botticelli X Van Eyck for this film’s aesthetics.

Sweet Lolita through the years
Part 1: Late 90s-2005 (ish) “Oldschool”
Oldschool sweet is the first truly recognizable form of sweet Lolita
Though during the Oldschool era the substyles had far more crossover and less individual traits I think there’s just enough that you still label coords from the time. When most people think of Oldschool they think of a solid color main piece with lace topped otks and a rectangle headdress… but Oldschool is so much more than that.
Oldschool in general was simpler, though some brands like Metamorphose Temps De Fille , Emily Temple Cute, and baby the stars shine bright were already making prints
Printed fabrics of fruits or florals were very common, but you did see a good amount of screen printed and appliquéd pieces coming out at the time too. Some very common sweet motifs in the oldschool era were:
•cats
•fruit
•alice in wonderland
•bunnies / rabbits
•bears
•alphabet / letter prints
•music notes
•hearts
The closer to the end of the identifiable oldschool era the more prints became popular! Though through most of the 2000’s prints would remain more minimal with the focus being on more structural elements like lace, bows, construction, and interesting fabric choices.
Due to the image limit on tumblr here’s a link to the correct sorting to see examples on lolibrary with examples of some early sweet prints and patterns. If you click the link on any of these items you’ll be able to view their lolibrary entries as well if available
Color balance wasn’t considered as highly as it is today, the overall vibe of Coords was more chaotic and experimental. A very make do attitude can be seen in many street snaps.
Patterned main pieces were another popular alternative to prints, things like gingham, stripes, tartan/plaid.
Bag choices were pretty varied, honestly in a lot of oldschool sweet coords people would use unique bags as the visual interest / focal point. You can already see that in someone of the coords above. Faux leather shaped bags like btssb’s heart bags weren’t very popular yet. A few brands had put out heart bags, such as milk, but they were much simpler and often real leather in limited colors. You also didn’t see usakumyas in their modern iteration until well into the 2000’s towards the 2010’s. Plush bags of the era did not have the same clean marketable look. Some common / popular bags were:
-basket / wicker purses
-plush animal bags
-tote bags
-matching fabric bags
-leather handbags
-designer handbags
Shoes at the time were much chunkier and much less cutesy even in sweet styles. Tea parties didn’t exist until a good deal past this time period- honestly most popular modern Lolita shoe styles weren’t really seen. Real leather was far more common, in a much more limited pallet. When you did see colored shoes they typically weren’t used to color balance a coord like we do now a days. A lot of different styles were worn though, including:
-Mary Jane’s
-Platforms
-Rocking horse shoes
-Boots
-Oxfords
-sandals
Socks are often overlooked in oldschool. I’ve seen so many people say printed socks weren’t worn even though they absolutely were and many brands made them. Sure, lace topped otks were the trend and the most popular option but simple motif printed socks absolutely existed and were worn!
Headpieces were one of the most varied category. So many different styles and kinds were worn.
-mini crowns
-hair ribbons
-hats
-bows
-canotiers
-mini hats
-lace headdresses
Jewelry / Accessories were one area that Oldschool definitely was simpler. However brands were absolutely making both jewelry and other accessories. Plain metal necklaces with various motifs were common, lace chokers, faux collars, capes, ties, and though extremely uncommon you do sometimes run across wrist cuffs. Hopefully there’s more of an effort to start documenting jewelry and accessories from this time since it’s quite lacking
Makeup and hair were something that like all eras of Lolita followed the over all cultural trends of the time. More minimal make or simple 90’s - early 2000’s makeup is seen often. As for hair there’s so many different styles that really it would be impossible to list them all. In older magazines there’s often sections with hair tutorials and makeup tutorials!
Common lace styles included Torchon, Cotton, Eyelet, and Raschel. Many different trims and such were used in addition to these.

@june-doe-2024 day 29: Free Day
Oooooof. Man
This took a lot of time and effort but I wanted my free day piece to be something special. I’ve been so dedicated to this idea and this is pretty much exactly what I wanted it to be. AU in which Jane Doe is a TV head and Karnak tells everyone’s stories through her.
[Video description: "Dream of Life" from Ride the Cyclone is the audio. A still image of Jane Doe with a TV for a head stands in front of purple curtains pulled back to reveal a starry night sky. She is wearing a gray and black plaid jumper and a floral lace top similar to the one she wears in the 2016 version of RTC. The power cord to the TV is wrapped loosely around her neck. The screen starts off black, then it shows static snow, followed by images of the rest of the choir, including: Ocean hugging the Up With People album; a young Noel smirking as he pulls the nativity pageant stunt, wearing the headdress and holding the bare little tree with the star on top; Mischa descending the stairs of a dark basement; a young Ricky standing with bright green crutches against a yellow wall with multiple framed photos of cats on it; Constance laying on her stomach on her bed cutting pieces out of her yearbook. Before each new image, the one preceding it is distorted by glitch. Following these are TV color blocks, which then display the words "ERROR: NO IDENTITY" and then "????" At which point the color blocks are distorted by snow and glitch until the TV screen tunes off. End video description]
Some stills under the cut (I didn't write alt text for each still because I'm on a bit of a time crunch and they're all described in the above video description, these are just the stills from that).

Mask of Thuya
New Kingdom, late 18th Dynasty, ca. 1391-1353 BC. Tomb of Yuya and Thuya (KV46), Valley of the Kings, Thebes. Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 95254
The mummy mask of Tjuyu or Thuya is made of cartonnage covered with a thin layer of gold foil. When found it was completely covered with the remains of its linen shroud removed by the restorer. A few fragments of the shroud, now blackened with age, still adhere to the wig and part of the pectoral.
Thuya is depicted with idealized features. Her face is a squarish oval in shape and is framed by a three-part wig that leaves the ears exposed. The headdress is held in place by a diadem that can be seen below the shroud decorated with floral motifs, a lotus flower is placed above the forehead.

Any hcs for wedding attire in Essos? Especially the Dothraki because I am dying for them to actually have culture GEORGE
I think a wedding in Dothraki culture is first and foremost a show of power. The man is actually expected to gift the materials to his bride for her wedding outfit, as an example of how well he will provide for her once they're married. The taller/bigger her wedding headdress is, the more established her husband is. All the materials, along with the gifts of slaves and horses, are to be taken as spoils during raids, meaning that to be a wife with a particularly exotic wedding costume is very favored. The husband himself is also expected to be decorated in his spoils, proving his prowess and ability to take what is his just by what he wears.
In Volantis, though there are a very wide range of religious wedding traditions, in most cases the (secular) cultural precedent is that the couple is expected to wear the colors and symbols of the others family, as a sign of respect for the marriage pact. The bride is supposed to make her wedding outfit as detailed and elaborate as possible, because a girl with a fancy gown is indeed a rich girl with a lot of time on her hands and many slaves to help her. The man is expected to wear a head wrap gifted to him by the bride, as a sign of good will.
Myrish weddings are an incredibly excessive affair. The couple being celebrated is given all manner of gifts, like jewelry and lace and bolts of cloth, by their families, which the women of the family then incorporate into the wedding costumes. Bridal gowns are multicolored with lots of motifs (usually floral), while the groom wears matching motifs on his own attire. And of course the lace has to be mentioned. Its everywhere. On the collars, the sleeves, the hems, and of course on the brides head. Traditionally, a woman's mother will make it for her to wear on her wedding, but rich girls usually pay the best lace makers in the city to make theirs.
(pls excuse the fact im using multiple Chinese historical fashion eras, I can't decide which I like the best for my YiTi headcanons) In YiTi, both men and women wear the high necked jacket that covers the skirt for weddings and other traditional ceremonies, as opposed to the shorter jacket/robes that usually go under the skirt for more casual times (its the aoqun and ruqun difference in Hanfu). Women are to wear the colors and symbols of her husbands family, as a sign of being joining them, but the man is expected to provide the bride with a sizable dowry and proper materials for her gown, as thanks towards the bride and her family. Wedding attire is very personalized, stitched and printed with insignias of the brides family, her favorite things, any symbols considered lucky, etc etc. Both members are also to wear their hair in a specific way, with a specific headpiece, to denote their social class during the ceremony.
#asoiaf#asoiaf hair and clothing#I use traditional Chinese fashion as my yiti inspo but there is just So Much of it I get confused while sifting thru the diff eras#so please forgive me for mixing different dynasties up#its not a case of me being an idiot and thinking all historical Chinese clothing is the same#its just me trying to find which era I like best for my current YiTi headcanon
