Tumblr media
When it comes to maintaining the beauty and longevity of your home, flooring is one of the most essential elements to consider. Flooring can be subjected to everyday wear and tear; over time, tiles, vinyl, and hardwood floors may show signs of damage. You're in the right place if you're looking for professional flooring repair in Sarasota! The exemplary restoration service can bring your floors back to life, whether tile cracks, vinyl peeling, or hardwood scratches.
At Flooring 941 LLC, we pride ourselves on providing expert flooring repair that Sarasota residents can trust. We specialize in restoring all types of floors, from tile and vinyl to hardwood, ensuring that your home or business looks beautiful and stays durable and functional for years to come.
Why Choose Floor Restoration?
You might wonder, “Why should I restore my flooring instead of just replacing it?” The answer is simple—floor restoration is a more cost-effective solution that saves you time and money. Whether you're dealing with damaged tiles, worn-out vinyl, or hardwood floors that need some TLC, restoration allows you to breathe new life into your existing floors without the hassle of replacing them entirely.
When you choose flooring repair in Sarasota, you can expect the following:
Cost Efficiency – Floor restoration is typically more affordable than replacing your entire floor.
Quick Turnaround – Repairs can be completed quickly, so you don’t have to endure a lengthy project.
Environmental Benefits – You reduce waste by restoring your floors instead of replacing them, contributing to a greener, more sustainable environment.
Expert Craftsmanship – Professionals ensure every repair is handled with care and precision, leaving your floors looking new again.
Restoring Tile Floors
Tile floors are often a go-to for homes and businesses in Sarasota due to their durability and timeless appeal. However, tiles can become cracked or loose over time, just like all flooring. In these situations, flooring repair in Sarasota becomes essential. Restoration experts can replace damaged tiles, reseal grout, and restore the shine and luster to your tile floor, extending its life and keeping your space stunning.
Professional tile restoration services can help fix cracks, chips, or stains in ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone tiles. Restoring your tiles instead of replacing them saves time and money while enjoying the aesthetic benefits of a flawless floor.
Vinyl Floor Restoration
Vinyl floors are another popular choice for Sarasota residents because they’re low-maintenance, affordable, and come in various styles. However, vinyl flooring can sometimes suffer from peeling edges, dents, or fading. Whether it's from heavy foot traffic, furniture, or the effects of time, vinyl restoration is an excellent option for homeowners seeking to extend the life of their floors.
Restoring vinyl floors is a job that should be left to the professionals. They have the right tools and expertise to repair peeling seams, smooth out dents, and fix scratches. If your vinyl floors have seen better days, don’t rush into replacing them—floor restoration can make them look as good as new without the cost of a full replacement.
Hardwood Floor Restoration
For many homeowners in Sarasota, hardwood floors are a staple. There’s no denying the charm and elegance that hardwood floors bring to a space, but they can become scratched, dented, or dull over time. Fortunately, flooring repair Sarasota experts can help restore your hardwood floors to their original beauty.
Restoring hardwood floors typically involves sanding the surface to remove imperfections and then refinishing the floors with a new layer of varnish or stain. This process can smooth out deep scratches, fix water damage, and make your hardwood floors gleam again. With the proper restoration techniques, even the most worn-out hardwood floors can look brand new.
The Restoration Process: What to Expect
When you schedule your flooring repair in Sarasota, the restoration process typically involves several key steps to ensure your floors are returned to their best possible condition:
Initial Assessment – Experts will inspect your floors to assess the damage and determine the most effective repair methods.
Cleaning and Preparation – Floors are thoroughly cleaned and prepped to ensure no dirt or debris interferes with the repair process.
Repair and Restoration – Whether replacing damaged tiles, resealing vinyl, or sanding hardwood floors, restoration specialists will carefully fix and restore your flooring.
Finishing Touches – After the repairs are completed, your floors will receive a final treatment to enhance their appearance and protect them from future wear and tear.
Conclusion
Flooring repair in Sarasota doesn’t have to be a stressful or expensive process. Whether your tile, vinyl, or hardwood floors need repair, restoration services can bring your floors back to life without the hassle and cost of replacements. Flooring 941 LLC is here to provide trusted expertise for all your flooring repair needs, ensuring your floors look beautiful and last year. Ready to restore your floors to their former glory? Is Hardwood Flooring Right for Your Home? Key Advantages and Downsides
Tumblr media
When planning home upgrades, flooring can be a big decision. Among all options, hardwood flooring is a timeless, elegant choice that adds charm to any home. However, as with any material, it’s essential to weigh the pros and cons of hardwood flooring to determine if it’s right for you. This article dives into hardwood floors' perks and potential drawbacks to help you make an informed choice.
The Appeal of Hardwood Flooring: Key Benefits
Aesthetic Versatility and Timeless Appeal
Hardwood floors add a classic beauty and warmth that complements almost any decor style. With choices ranging from rustic oak and cherry to exotic walnut or teak, hardwood can adapt to modern, traditional, and eclectic interior designs. The natural tones and grain patterns offer an unmatched look, making hardwood a favorite among homeowners and designers.
Durability and Longevity
Quality hardwood flooring can last decades—sometimes over a century with proper care. Unlike carpet or laminate, which often need replacing after some years, hardwood can withstand heavy foot traffic, especially in the living room, kitchen, or hallways. While some types of wood are softer and may show wear, options like oak or hickory are remarkably resilient.
Easy Maintenance
Hardwood floors are surprisingly easy to clean. A simple routine of sweeping or vacuuming combined with an occasional damp mop keeps them looking their best. Because they’re less prone to trapping dust, pollen, or other allergens, hardwood flooring can contribute to better indoor air quality than carpeting.
Increased Home Value
Installing hardwood floors can be a worthwhile investment. Many homebuyers are willing to pay more for a property with hardwood flooring, making it a valuable asset when it’s time to sell. This appeal helps offset the initial installation costs, as buyers view hardwood as a high-end, durable flooring choice.
Customizable through Refinishing
Hardwood flooring has the advantage of being refinished rather than replaced. Over time, if the surface shows scratches or becomes discolored, a sanding and refinishing job can restore its original luster. This flexibility is precious in high-traffic homes where floors need a refresh every decade.
Potential Downsides of Hardwood Flooring
Higher Initial Costs
Hardwood flooring often comes with a higher upfront price than other options like laminate or vinyl. However, many homeowners consider the long-term value and durability worth the investment. If budget is a concern, engineered hardwood can offer a similar look and feel at a lower cost, though it may not be as long-lasting.
Susceptible to Scratches and Moisture
While hardwood is durable, it’s not indestructible. Heavy furniture, pet claws, and high heels can leave scratches or dents. Areas with high moisture, such as bathrooms or basements, aren’t ideal for hardwood due to the risk of water damage. If spills or leaks occur every day, consider area rugs to protect your floors or opt for more water-resistant materials in those spaces.
Temperature Sensitivity
Hardwood floors expand and contract with changing temperatures and humidity, leading to gaps or buckling if not appropriately managed. Installing hardwood in stable environments or using humidifiers in the winter and air conditioning in the summer to maintain even conditions is essential.
Noise Levels
Hardwood flooring and carpet don’t absorb sound, which can make homes noisier. Adding rugs in certain areas and installing padding under furniture can help reduce noise, but it’s worth considering if sound levels are a concern.
Hardwood Flooring vs. Other Options
Compared to materials like tile or vinyl, the pros and cons of hardwood flooring balance luxury with specific upkeep needs. For those seeking beauty, value, and durability, hardwood can be a solid choice, but it’s essential to plan for maintenance to keep it looking its best. Alternatives like laminate, vinyl, or tile might be better suited for homes where durability against moisture and cost-efficiency are top priorities.
Final Thoughts
So, is hardwood flooring right for your home? It could be a great fit if you prioritize long-term beauty, easy maintenance, and the added value of a timeless flooring choice. However, for areas prone to moisture or heavy wear, consider pairing hardwood with other materials or opting for more moisture-resistant options. Ultimately, the decision will come down to balancing your home’s specific needs with the unique benefits and potential drawbacks of hardwood flooring.

Choosing the Best Flooring Contractor in Sarasota for Your Home
Tumblr media
Selecting the right flooring contractor in Sarasota is crucial for ensuring a successful home renovation project. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to choose the best one. Here are some essential tips to help you make an informed decision.
Research and Recommendations
1. Gather Recommendations: Start by asking friends, family, and neighbors for recommendations. Personal experiences can provide valuable insights into the reliability and quality of contractors’ work.
2. Online Reviews: Check online reviews on platforms like Google, Yelp, and Angie’s List. Look for contractors with consistently high ratings and positive feedback from clients.
Verify Credentials
3. Licensing and Insurance: Ensure the contractor is licensed and insured. This protects you from liability in case of accidents or damages during the project.
4. Certifications: Look for certifications from reputable industry organizations. These indicate that the contractor has undergone professional training and adheres to industry standards.
Experience and Expertise
5. Portfolio of Work: Review the contractor’s portfolio to see examples of their previous work. This will give you an idea of their style and the quality of their craftsmanship.
6. Specialization: Some contractors specialize in certain types of flooring, such as hardwood, tile, or laminate. Choose a contractor with experience in the specific flooring type you want.
Obtain Multiple Quotes
7. Detailed Estimates: Request detailed estimates from at least three different contractors. Compare the quotes, but don’t automatically go for the cheapest option. Consider the quality of materials, the scope of work, and the estimated timeline.
8. Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask questions about the quote. Clarify any uncertainties regarding the materials, labor costs, and any additional fees that may arise.
Communication and Professionalism
9. Clear Communication: A good contractor should communicate clearly and promptly. They should be willing to answer your questions and keep you informed throughout the project.
10. Professionalism: Observe the contractor’s professionalism during your interactions. Punctuality, respectfulness, and a positive attitude are indicators of a contractor who values their clients.
Contract and Warranty
11. Written Contract: Ensure all the details of the project are outlined in a written contract. This includes the scope of work, timeline, payment schedule, and warranty information.
12. Warranty: A reliable contractor will offer a warranty on their workmanship and the materials used. This provides peace of mind that any issues that arise post-installation will be addressed.
Conclusion
Choosing the best flooring contractor in Sarasota involves careful research and consideration. By gathering recommendations, verifying credentials, reviewing portfolios, obtaining multiple quotes, and assessing communication and professionalism, you can find a contractor who will deliver high-quality results. Ensure you have a written contract and warranty in place to protect your investment and enjoy your beautifully renovated home.

Sarasota’s Top Flooring Contractor Shares Insider Secrets for Durable Floors
Tumblr media
Durability is always a top priority when investing in new flooring. Whether renovating your home or upgrading a commercial space, choosing the right materials and installation techniques can make all the difference. To help you make the best decision, a trusted flooring contractor in Sarasota is here to share insider secrets on how to achieve long-lasting, beautiful floors that stand the test of time.
Secret #1: Choose the Right Flooring Material
Not all flooring materials are created equal when it comes to durability. The key is to select a flooring type that suits your lifestyle, climate, and usage needs. Here are some of the best options for long-lasting floors:
Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are among the most durable choices, ideal for high-traffic areas and Florida’s humid climate. They are water-resistant, easy to clean, and resistant to scratches and stains.
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP): A top choice for homeowners seeking the look of hardwood without maintenance. LVP is water-resistant, scratch-resistant, and highly durable, making it perfect for homes with kids and pets.
Engineered Hardwood: Offers the beauty of real wood but with better resistance to moisture and temperature fluctuations.
Epoxy Flooring: Great for garages and commercial spaces, epoxy provides a seamless, highly durable, and stain-resistant surface.
Secret #2: Proper Installation Matters
Even the highest-quality flooring won’t last if it’s not installed correctly. A flooring contractor in Sarasota ensures that your flooring is laid with precision and expertise. Key installation secrets include:
Subfloor Preparation: A level, clean, and dry subfloor is crucial for preventing warping, cracking, and uneven surfaces.
Moisture Barriers: In Florida’s humid climate, installing a proper moisture barrier under flooring like hardwood or laminate is essential to prevent swelling and mold growth.
Quality Adhesives and Underlayment: Using high-quality adhesives and underlayments improves the stability and comfort of your floors.
Secret #3: Protect Your Floors with Proper Maintenance
Durable flooring still needs regular care to maintain its longevity and appearance. Here are some maintenance tips recommended by professional flooring experts:
Sweep and Mop Regularly: Dust and dirt can cause scratches over time, so regular sweeping and gentle mopping help maintain the finish.
Use the Right Cleaning Products: Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage protective coatings. Stick to manufacturer-approved cleaners.
Furniture Pads and Rugs: Heavy furniture can cause dents and scratches, so using furniture pads and area rugs in high-traffic areas helps preserve your floors.
Control Indoor Humidity: A dehumidifier can prevent wood flooring from expanding and contracting due to moisture.
Secret #4: Invest in Professional Maintenance and Repairs
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, flooring can experience wear and tear. A flooring contractor Sarasota can help extend the life of your floors with professional maintenance and repairs. Services such as deep cleaning, resealing, refinishing, and minor repairs can restore your floors to their original beauty and durability.
Secret #5: Work with a Reputable Flooring Contractor
Choosing the right flooring expert is crucial to ensuring your floors remain durable and beautiful for years. FLOORING 941 LLC is a trusted name in Sarasota, known for providing top-notch flooring solutions with quality craftsmanship and excellent customer service. The Most Common Flooring Repairs We Handle in Sarasota Homes
Tumblr media
Flooring plays a vital role in the look, comfort, and functionality of your home. However, over time, wear and tear, environmental factors, and unexpected damage can take their toll. In Sarasota homes, certain flooring issues are more common due to the region’s unique climate and lifestyle.
In this blog, we’ll cover the most frequent flooring repair Sarasota homeowners encounter and provide insights into how professionals address these problems to restore your floors to their original beauty and durability.
1. Repairing Water Damage
Water damage is one of the most common flooring issues in Sarasota, thanks to the area’s high humidity and frequent storms. Leaky pipes, flooding, or excessive moisture can cause materials like hardwood and laminate to warp, buckle, or stain.
How It’s Repaired
For minor water damage, professionals often sand, refinish, or replace affected boards. In more severe cases, especially when mold or structural issues are involved, the entire floor or subfloor may need replacement. Moisture barriers or waterproof underlayment are typically added during repairs to prevent future issues.
2. Fixing Scratches and Dents
Hardwood and laminate floors are susceptible to scratches and dents caused by furniture, heavy foot traffic, or pets. While these issues don’t necessarily compromise the floor’s functionality, they can diminish its appearance.
How It’s Repaired
Light scratches are often buffed out, while deeper ones may require sanding and refinishing. For laminate floors, damaged planks are replaced, as they cannot be sanded or stained. Sarasota flooring experts match the repair materials to the existing floor to ensure a seamless look.
3. Resolving Gaps Between Boards
Temperature changes and humidity fluctuations in Sarasota can cause wood flooring to expand and contract, leading to noticeable gaps between planks. Over time, these gaps may allow dirt and moisture to seep through, causing further damage.
How It’s Repaired
Flooring professionals typically address gaps by filling them with wood filler or installing new planks. For ongoing humidity issues, a dehumidifier or climate control system may be recommended to stabilize the indoor environment.
4. Replacing Cracked or Broken Tiles
Tile flooring is popular in Sarasota homes for its durability and water resistance, but it isn’t immune to damage. Heavy impacts or shifting subfloors can cause tiles to crack or break, detracting from your floor’s appearance and functionality.
How It’s Repaired
Cracked tiles are removed and replaced with matching tiles. If the damage is due to an uneven or unstable subfloor, professionals will level the subfloor before installing the replacement tiles.
5. Fixing Loose or Peeling Flooring
Adhesive issues can cause laminate, vinyl, or engineered wood flooring to peel or lift. This problem often stems from improper installation, water intrusion, or aging adhesives.
How It’s Repaired
Professionals reapply adhesive and secure the affected sections. If the flooring material has been damaged or warped, it may need to be replaced entirely. To prevent future issues, contractors ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level before making repairs.
6. Refinishing Worn Hardwood Floors
Hardwood floors are a timeless choice, but they can lose their luster over time due to scratches, stains, or general wear. Sarasota’s sandy environment and frequent humidity can accelerate the need for refinishing.
How It’s Repaired
Sanding and refinishing restore the surface of hardwood floors, giving them a like-new appearance. Professionals may also stain the floors to enhance their color and apply a protective sealant to guard against future damage.
7. Addressing Subfloor Issues
A damaged subfloor can lead to squeaking, uneven flooring, or even visible dips in the surface. These issues often stem from water damage, poor installation, or aging materials.
How It’s Repaired
Repairing a subfloor involves removing the top flooring layer, addressing the damaged sections, and installing new subflooring. This process ensures a stable foundation for your floors, preventing further problems.
8. Treating Mold and Mildew Problems
Sarasota’s humid climate makes mold and mildew a recurring concern for homeowners, particularly in damp areas like kitchens, bathrooms, or basements. Mold not only damages flooring but also poses health risks.
How It’s Repaired
Professionals remove affected materials and treat the area with mold inhibitors to prevent regrowth. Installing moisture barriers and improving ventilation are common strategies for preventing future mold problems.
Why Sarasota Homes Experience Unique Flooring Challenges
The challenges Sarasota homeowners face with their flooring often come down to climate and lifestyle factors:
Humidity: Constant exposure to high humidity accelerates wear, especially in wood and laminate flooring.
Storms and Flooding: Frequent rain and storm surges can lead to water intrusion, affecting subfloors and surface materials.
Sandy Conditions: Sarasota’s coastal environment brings sand into homes, which can scratch and wear down flooring over time.
High Foot Traffic: Many Sarasota homes are hubs for gatherings or family activities, increasing the wear and tear on flooring.
How to Prevent Flooring Issues
While professional repairs can address most flooring problems, proactive care can help reduce the frequency of repairs.
1. Control Indoor Humidity
Use dehumidifiers or air conditioning to maintain a stable indoor environment, particularly in the summer months.
2. Regular Maintenance
Clean floors regularly to prevent dirt and debris from causing scratches. For hardwood, occasional refinishing can extend the floor’s lifespan.
3. Address Spills Immediately
Wipe up spills promptly to prevent water from seeping into the flooring or subfloor.
4. Use Protective Measures
Place rugs or mats in high-traffic areas and under furniture to reduce wear and tear.
5. Schedule Professional Inspections
Periodic inspections by a Sarasota flooring expert can identify and address potential issues before they escalate.
Final Thoughts
Flooring repairs are a natural part of homeownership, especially in a vibrant and humid environment like Sarasota. From water damage to cracked tiles, knowing the most common issues and how professionals address them can help you stay ahead of potential problems.
By understanding these challenges and working with trusted local flooring experts, you can maintain your home’s floors and ensure they remain beautiful, functional, and durable for years to come. Whether you need a simple repair or a major restoration, the right approach can save you time, money, and stress.

milton rapidly intensified from a category 1 to a category 5 hurricane in under 24 hours. it will hopefully SLIGHTLY “weaken” in wind speed before fall due to wind shear, but i don’t like using the word weaken because it’s a major hurricane no matter what and it’s likely not enough to offset catastrophic damage.
tampa bay area has not been directly hit since 1921, the infrastructure may not be adequate. a category 5 tropical cyclone is without exaggeration the most powerful class of storm capable of being produced on planet earth
i’m in sarasota which is right in the crosshairs of hurricane milton. i think i will be safe physically because i am so so so so lucky to live in a building made of solid concrete + hurricane proof glass and i’m not in an evacuation/flood zone. i live on the first floor so if a tree falls on the building it will hit the roof which is the second floor. so i’ll probably bunker in the bathroom which is the safest room in my complex in the center of the building away from windows.
Tumblr media
what i’m more worried about is being without power or water for a long time. it’s very hot and humid and without air conditioning florida is swamp-ass swamp-taint sweat hell.
we have a huge stack of water bottles that we copped in preparation for helene and thank god we didnt have to use it. flashlights and batteries, portable chargers, usb powered fan that i can use a car phone charger and a 9-volt battery attached by a little metal spring from a mechanical pen to activate (awesome hack i did back in 2017 with irma), a box of snacks, plenty of weed edibles (for me), wine (for my mom) and we will be feasting on peanut butter and bread.

Excerpt from this story from CNN:
William Fulford moved from Virginia Beach, Virginia, to a new waterfront development in Florida in 2023. Nestled between Sarasota Bay and the southwestern part of Tampa Bay, the new home by Bradenton Beach was everything Fulford, a retired custom homebuilder, ever wished for.
The developers of the new Hunters Point community, Pearl Homes, billed the property as the first “net-zero” single-family home development in the US, meaning residents produce more energy from solar panels than they need, with the excess energy either being stored or sold back to the grid – in a state where most electricity is generated by burning natural gas, a planet-warming fossil fuel.
They also boast some of the most sustainable, energy-efficient and hurricane-proof homes in the country: The streets surrounding the homes are intentionally designed to flood so houses don’t. Power and internet lines are buried to avoid wind damage. The sturdy concrete walls, hurricane-proof windows and doors are fortified with a layer of foam insulation, providing extra safety against the most violent storms.
Climate resiliency and storm protection were built into the fabric of the homes. And while the newly developed homes have endured a few storms since people moved in around February 2023, Hurricanes Helene and Milton put those features to the true test over the last two weeks.
Most of the residents living in Hunters Point heeded the mandatory evacuations ahead of Hurricane Milton’s landfall but Fulford, 76, stayed behind with wife, Sueann, just as they did during Hurricane Helene last month.
They stocked up on water and groceries. Fulford moved the car to higher ground. He tied up all patio and back deck furniture together. They brought everything from the garage, which made up the entire ground floor, up to the living spaces on the second floor. And, in the event of a worst-case scenario, Sueann insisted on getting life preservers.
“I’m just quite convinced that the strength and everything in this house. They built a great house, a strong house,” Fulford said. “And I just feel comfortable. I feel like we’re high enough up, even if we get a storm surge.”
When Gobuty started the design process for Hunters Point, it was imperative the homes be able to withstand Category 5 hurricanes. It’s the first residential development to get a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) net-zero certification in the world, according to the US Green Building Council.
Each of the three-story homes are designed like this: The ground floor is a garage designed with flood vents to drain rising water. The living spaces start on the second floor, which is intentionally built 16 feet above sea level. From the roof to its foundation, steel straps secure the entire structure. Solar panels are attached to the roofs’ raised vertical seams to prevent them from flying off.
The property also sits in a major flood zone, which meant the homes needed to be elevated to meet Florida’s building codes. Still, the developers went beyond the required 3 feet of fill dirt and used 7 feet instead to be safe.

@stephantradez thought he was going to be fine. In his first TikTok about Hurricane Milton, he vowed to stay at his Tampa apartment. In a follow-up video, he said the media was “rage-baiting” everyone into thinking the storm “was going to be some catastrophic thing” but that it wouldn’t be that bad “as long as you can swim.” Late Wednesday night, he posted another video saying that he thought he’d survived but then lost his power. “This is so much worse than I expected,” he said while pointing the camera out the window of his home, showing the destruction from several floors up. Thursday morning, he posted a video saying he’d survived, adding “They have to ban hurricane’s at night, that was the most stressful thing I’ve ever been a part of.”
I attempted to reach the creator through TikTok and Instagram DM, but got no response. @stephantradez, though, was one of many people who kept posting on TikTok, and other social media platforms throughout the storm, despite, as the warning on one of the creator’s videos noted, “participating in this activity could result in you or others getting hurt.”
When Milton made landfall Wednesday night local time in Sarasota, it was a Category 3 hurricane. As it traversed Florida, it took the roof off of Tropicana Field, left millions without electricity, and killed several people. It also became the subject of TikToks with millions of views, and, according to a report in Rolling Stone turned the platform into “a hellscape of people staying in Hurricane Milton’s path for clout.”
While it’s true that some people likely stayed, and kept posting, because there was nowhere for them to go, others definitely seemed to be sticking around in an attempt to keep attention on their feeds. Rather than a hellscape, it became a demonstration of the best and worst of TikTok.
For every mom getting told to flee the storm’s path even as she explains that she can’t afford to, there’s someone saying they’re in an evacuation zone but sticking around while also offering up sports betting tips.
Then there’s Caroline Calloway. The influencer and author, who lives in Sarasota, drew the ire of the internet when she posted on X “where there’s a Callowill, there’s a Calloway” and said she wouldn’t be leaving her home, even as officials were stressing the importance of evacuating. (“You are going to die,” Tampa Mayor Jane Castor warned anyone who stayed put.) In an interview with New York Magazine’s Intelligencer, Calloway said she was staying to check on elderly neighbors, adding that her sense of humor is just “very dark.” On Thursday, she apparently sent a text to Intelligencer’s writer with a picture of herself and her cat with the message “I lived bitch.”
All of this wouldn’t feel so dystopian if the US—and the world—wasn’t hurtling toward a scenario when social media platforms, particularly TikTok, weren’t becoming a lot of people’s go-to news source. Even as Anderson Cooper braves the storm to give CNN viewers updates on Milton, a new report from Pew Research shows 52 percent of Americans who are on TikTok regularly get their news there. Not from media outlets, but from influencers and content creators.
While these accounts may be relying on reports from traditional outlets when they deliver news, their posts are “probably interspersed with a lot of very non-traditional content—like skits, funny dances or promotional content,” Aaron Smith, Pew’s managing director of data labs, told Axios. On-the-ground reporting from influencers, then, becomes mixed with entertainment. Watching it, or, admittedly, writing about it, feels like missing the point.
