Essex Expert Details the Renovation of a Dirty Travertine Floor in Gidea Park Romford
These photographs are of a Travertine kitchen floor at a property in Gidea Park near Romford. The floor was approximately 20m2 and had been laid 20 years ago. Although it had been sealed the client had been cleaning the floor with the wrong products and that had stripped the sealer off the floor. As a result, dirt had become ingrained into the pores of the stone making it look very dirty.

My client was so unhappy with its appearance they were seriously considering taking the Travertine tiles up and replacing it with something more manageable, as they could never get it to look clean. You can imagine their relief after I visited and advised them that the floor could indeed be recovered.
After surveying the stone floor, I worked out a plan for its renovation and provided them with a quote which they were happy to go ahead with.
Cleaning a Travertine Tiled Kitchen
I started the cleaning with the grout lines which had darkened with accumulated dirt. To do this I applied a 4:1 dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean along the grout lines and left it to soak in for ten minutes. The grout lines where then scrubbed by hand until their original colour returned. Although harder work, I find this method works better than using pads with a machine as the pads can struggle to reach into the recesses of the grout lines.
To get the ingrained dirt out of the stone and restore the beautiful appearance of the Travertine I used a set of Tile Doctor Burnishing pads. These are applied with a rotary buffing machine starting with the coarse 400-grit pad and worked into the stone with more Tile Doctor Pro-Clean.

After rinsing and extracting I then moved onto the 800 and 1500-grit pads, using only water this time for lubrication and rinsing and extracting after each pad. The last 3000-grit pad was applied with a little water sprayed onto the tiles to bring up a polish on the stone.
Sealing a Travertine Tiled Kitchen Floor
The floor was left to dry overnight, and I returned the next day to seal it using two coats of Tile Doctor Ultra-Seal sealer to give it a nice sheen. This will give the floor hardwearing protection by ensuring dirt remains on the surface where it is much easier to remove with regular cleaning.

My client was very happy with her new floor and relieved that the new sealer would make it much easier to keep clean going forward. She also left a 5-star review and commented:“GOOD JOB….PLEASED”
On the topic of cleaning, I recommended Tile Doctor Neutral Tile Cleaner which is a pH neutral cleaner. It will not strip the sealer like the previous products she had been using and should ensure the floor is kept in this condition for many years to come. Obviously, we are on hand in the future if she has any further problems.

The surprisingly attractive Havering Council Appointment Centre (?) in Romford, East London. The PVC windows don't do much for me, but the dark brick is pleasing and the graduated floors above the main door are a nice detail.

In 1971, the Angling Times sent reporter Dave Nash to document a disaster in Ockendon, Essex. The resulting article described the extinction of a local beauty spot, hundreds of hectares of open space where former gravel pits had become popular fishing lakes. “In less than a decade, what was one of the best fisheries in Essex has been savagely raped and despoiled. Seven hundred tons of household garbage is deposited into the pits every day, along with a similar undisclosed amount of industrial refuse.” The article was accompanied by a striking picture, taken by Nash, showing two men attempting to catch a pike between the scrap cars that lined the bank of Arisdale lake. “If it’s not the water level dropping,” said Jerry Hulbert, the vice-president of the Moor Hall and Belhus Angling Society, “then it’s the rubbish encroaching a few feet every day.”
I came across this story via my father-in-law, Cliff Hatton, who had sent me the newspaper cutting in the post. He would often tell me how the gravel pits, clay pits and sand pits of South Ockendon – initially dug out by the Ham River Grit company to feed the post-second world war hunger for concrete in south-east England – became, in his own excited words, “a nirvana” once they had naturally filled with water. “You dig a hole in Thurrock, leave it a few years and there are fish in it.”
The faintly absurd happenstance of the pits felt to me like a classic Essex story. My birth county had long made the best out of whatever the modern world threw at it, from industrial growth along the Thames to postwar new towns, becoming a shorthand for a loutish brand of greed-is-good Conservatism in the 1980s, and spray-tanned reality stars in the 2010s.
Like many former Londoners looking for green space, Cliff’s family had moved to South Ockendon from a housing estate near Romford in 1964, when Cliff was 11. He and his older brother Barry were keen fishers, and had enrolled in the local angling society. They rejoiced at the abundance of water they could dip their lines into. Cliff was a big fan of local heroes the Small Faces and the music of the burgeoning 1960s mod scene, which was filling Mecca ballrooms with R&B and soul from Forest Gate on the edge of London to Clacton on the coast. But it wasn’t music that kept him up all night. While his peers might have been trying their luck with a potential squeeze in the dark corner of a parquet-floored hall, he was sitting under the moonlight with a rod, eager to catch a handsome carp, perch or bream.
Cliff said one of the pits, known as Hamble Lane, had, like an increasing number of places in south Essex, become an established rubbish tip by the time they started fishing there. But, while fishing at night, he noticed something odd. “There was more activity at the site during the hours of darkness than there was during the hours of light, even though everybody should by law have been gone,” Cliff said. Lorries would come through the gates “nose-to-tail” with sometimes up to 14 in a convoy, all through the night until sunrise. It was only later he realised the extent of the industrial chemicals that were being dumped there under cover of darkness.
One day in 1967, an elderly neighbour had asked Cliff to bring back some sticks from the Hamble Lane dump that he could use in his rose garden. Cliff remembered his errand when he was on the way back from fishing, after the sun had gone down. He climbed on top of a pile of wood to search for sticks, and then jumped off. “I just leapt into the darkness thinking I was going to land on solid ground,” said Cliff. Instead, he found himself up to his waist in slime. After a few moments, his skin began to burn. He had jumped into a caustic slurry, dumped there by a pharmaceutical company based in Dagenham. “That led to me spending a week or so in hospital and many, many weeks after that invalided indoors with great burns to my legs and on my face,” said Cliff.
Cliff’s parents, knowing their place, never sought compensation. Once recovered enough to return to the pits, Cliff found two half-empty drums of granulated cyanide floating in one of them. Another time, he and his brother came across a mountain of glass vials, and suspected that barbiturates had been dumped a few yards from a school fence. “We took some samples to the local police station, and showed them these dangerous drugs and mentioned they were within yards of the school playing field, and the only question we were asked was: ‘What were you doing over there?’ They were more worried about the fact that we were trespassing.”
Thurrock council took no action over the scandalous pollution that burned him and destroyed the habitat he so cherished, leaving Cliff with “a lifelong grudge against authority”. Decades later, he still winced at the thought of the fish floundering about in a couple of feet of muddy, poisoned water as the pits were drained and the whole reserve became a landfill site; those that hadn’t already perished were buried alive under tonnes of industrial waste.
“And of course with them went all the voles and the birdlife, including kingfishers and bitterns.” Each time Cliff told me of his favourite fishing spot, the Ripples, it was as if he could see it before him anew. “It was dubbed the Ripples because when the wind blew on it and the sun shone on it, it was such a beautiful looking place. It sparkled. It was a paradise and it just went under a sea of filth.”

How Professionals Handle Building and Decorating Services?

Hiring professionals is always a wise choice when building and decorating a home or office. These experts know what to do, how, and when to do it. They make the process easier, faster, and less stressful for you.
Let’s look at how professionals handle building and decorating services in Romford from start to finish.
Step 1: Planning and Meeting
Everything starts with a plan. First, professionals meet with the client (that’s you!) to understand your needs. They ask questions like:
What kind of space do you want?
What is your budget?
What style do you like?
This first meeting helps them get a clear idea of your vision. Once they know what you want,
they plan how to make it happen.
Step 2: Designing the Space
After the meeting, the professionals create a design. This includes:
Floor plans (to show where things go)
Color themes
Furniture choices
Decoration ideas
They might use software or sketches to help you see what the space will look like. You can suggest changes if you don’t like something. Once you approve the design, they move on to the next step.
Step 3: Getting the Right Materials
Professionals know where to get high-quality materials. They can find:
Paints
Flooring
Tiles
Lights
Furniture
Décor items
They often get better prices because they work with trusted suppliers. This saves you time and money.
Step 4: Building and Installation
Now, the real work begins! Builders, electricians, plumbers, and other skilled workers come together to start the job. They follow safety rules and make sure everything is done right. Their tasks might include:
Laying bricks or wood
Painting walls
Installing lights or fans
Putting in windows and doors
They keep things clean and organized while working and stick to a schedule to finish on time.
Step 5: Decorating the Space
Once the building work is done, it’s time to decorate. This is where space comes to life. The decorators:
Hang curtains or blinds
Add wall art or paintings
Place furniture in the right spots
Add cushions, rugs, and small décor items
Their goal is to make the space both beautiful and comfortable.
Step 6: Final Check and Touch-Ups
Before the project ends, professionals do a final check. They walk through the space to see if everything is perfect. If they find anything out of place, they fix it. They want the space to look clean, polished, and ready for you to enjoy.
Why It’s Better to Hire Professionals
Hiring experts for building and decorating services has many benefits:
Experience: They’ve done it many times and know what works best.
Time-saving: They work quickly and know how to avoid delays.
Stress-free: You don’t have to do the hard work yourself.
Quality results: They care about details and do a great job.
The Extra Value Professionals Bring
Professionals also stay updated with the latest trends and technologies. They know which popular styles and materials are best for long-term use. They can suggest energy-saving ideas, smart storage solutions, and creative designs you may not have considered. Their advice can make your space look modern and function better. With their help, you don’t just get a new space—you get a space that works for your lifestyle.
Final Thoughts
Professional building and decorating services in Romford can transform your space in amazing ways. Whether you’re building a new home, an office, or just one room, these experts know how to make it look great. From the first meeting to the final touches, they carefully handle every step.
If you want a space that’s both useful and beautiful, hiring professionals is the best option. Let them take the stress off your shoulders and turn your dream space into a reality!

MOVING DAY SHOOT
LINK:
vimeo
DAY 1
DOP: me 1st AC: Gus 2nd AC: Owen (day 1) Kyle (day 2) Gaffer: Lewis
As we could only get the car needed for the exterior shots on day 2, we tried to shoot all interior on day 1. However, we had kit pickup at 9:30 and because our location was all the way over in Trinity, where our actor lives and let us shoot, it took us a while to get started. Mara managed to sort a van for us for pickup which was great as it saved us time and money though.
We ran behind schedule and unfortunately there wasn't much natural light at all so we had to depend almost entirely on the HMI and the kino celeb. Lewis managed to set the HMI up with an umbrella rigged above on a c-stand to make sure it didn't get wet if it was to start raining, which it did at some points. He managed to keep the power box inside the house with the cable running through the door onto the patio which was good as it gave us one less thing to worry about getting wet. We placed it on top of a metal box as the floor inside was wooden. Lewis unfortunately did spend the better part of the shoot out there as it was really windy.

Lewis also put the 6x6foot Scrim Jim infront of the light to diffuse it a little as it did cast massive shadows and was a bit harsh. It had a really great effect in the hallway.

It didn't quite fill the kitchen/living room area as we needed it to so we set up the celeb in the living room to point into the kitchen, hidden behind the wall on the left of the frame in the photo below.

We also unfortunately had a little bit of kit difficulty. We of course got the Romford with the janky leg so we had to add extra care into stabilising it. The 12K Ursa also doesn't come with rods, meaning we had to use the matt box rods for the wireless focus puller. The length of those rods stopped us from being able to go any lower than a 35mm as they would then be visible, so our wide wasn't quite as wide as we had planned for and one of the characters is not in frame for the first half of it, which of course will limit the edit but it was the best we could do at that point. As well as this, the clamp holding the second rod in place was missing and we couldn't get it until day 2 so we couldn't secure the matt box onto the camera either.
Other than that, the camera was super easy to use. I had Gus as my 1st AC and he was already familiar with it and its settings which helped a lot as we couldn't get a kit test scheduled before the shoot.
The set ups were pretty simple. We spent most of our time on lighting, so much so that we eventually ran out of daylight and didn't manage to get one of our shots.
Besides lighting, the biggest issue we had that we couldn't fix on set was the sound. Micheal's neighbours had work getting done in their house for a while but had only begun the drilling and sawing on the day of our shoot as luck would have it. As well as this, the busy main road was, as expected, an issue too.
DAY 1.5
Day 1 of the shoot brought a lot of issues. We had to change some things to account for:
the construction sounds
the sound of the main road
the rain forecasted for day 2
the tight schedule
our lack of a 2nd AC for day 2
After some brainstorming, me, Sophie (director) and Kyle (writer and script supervisor), jumped on a miserably long call the day before the second shoot day and came up with a plan. Robbie would be on set with us as it was his car we were using and he had to be the one driving it for insurance purposes. Therefore, Robbie agreed to being our script supervisor the second day (as there was only one shot of him driving) meaning that Kyle could be my 2nd AC.
We also decided to write the construction into the story. We decided to dress Kyle up as a construction worker and have him come out of Blair's house as she walks into it in the first shot of the film to establish that there is construction going on in their house.
Kyle then also changed a part of the dialogue to further explain it.
There wasn't much we could do about the busy road other than make sure that we linger on it a little longer on the one shot that it's visible in to let that explain itself.
As for the rain and the tight schedule, we had a lot to talk about. I said that we needed to come up with a plan B incase it were to rain - an alternate blocking, camera and lighting plan along with a new shotlist and marked up script where the chunk of the action outside (the argument) would happen inside, leaving only a few short scenes outside that the rain wouldn't affect very much. As we came up with this alternate plan, we realised that the smartest thing to do is make it our plan A so that everyone can come to set knowing exactly what's going to happen and so we can have a tight schedule and not one that's up in the air.
We added Esther (1st AD) to the call once we came up with a solution to every problem and talked her through everything (aka how everything has changed and we need an entirely new shooting schedule). We of course had to get this to her ASAP and so in about an hour, Kyle updated the script whilst I did the shotlist, Sophie made the blocking plan which she then sent to me so I could make a camera plan while she marked up Kyle's new script according to my shotlist.
Robbie, our saving grace, printed everything for us and immediately got onto marking up the script for himself too. We updated the rest of the crew on the changes and checked over Esther's new shooting schedule.
As intense as it was to change everything so last minute and make all of the corresponding documents, it was also a pretty great learning experience.
DAY 2
With our solidified plan and an extra 3 hours (as we could start at 8am that day), I was feeling a lot more confident about the shoot.

We shot all of the interiors first as we waited for the sun to be in its highest position in the sky for the exterior shots and we got super lucky. Unlike the day before, there was little wind and clearer skies. It did rain a little while doing interiors and setting up for exteriors but not while we shot which was all we needed. The ground didn't look wet either which was good. We got some lovely sunlight during the exteriors that matched the effect of the HMI and during our final shot we got this beautiful sun flare at the very end. We had really great luck with the sun. The dolly shots felt great too. The movements were so small that I managed to be my own grip in a way. Gus did a great job focus pulling by eye too. Everything went super smoothly and we were onto our most difficult shot out of the 4 exteriors - the final shot of the film.
The shot had a moving car in it so to save time resetting the car, we rehearsed the movement until we got it right. The first take we got was pretty much spot on, which was extremely lucky as Robbie's car unfortunately got slightly damaged in the process - nothing too serious, but serious enough to mess with continuity if we were to get another take, especially as we didn't have the time to reshoot the previous takes that showed the car fully intact. We played with the idea of changing something with the blocking or movement of the camera to not have to show the damaged part if we were to get another take of the last shot but decided that even if we were to do that, we would probably want to use the take we already got anyway instead so there wasn't much point. Thank god for that one shot wonder.

All of the solutions we came up with seemed to work really well. Implementing the construction into the script felt natural, we saw the busy main road in the last shot and we stayed on schedule. Looking back, I do wish we managed to get that final argument outside as I loved the progression of their interactions throughout the house as they rose in tensions, but we still end up in the driveway at the end of the film so it does still work - plus scheduling that argument for outside would have been too much of a risk if it rained which is why we changed it (but of course, it didn't rain).
I learned a lot from this shoot - not only technical things but also composing a visually interesting frame as well as thinking on my feet and solving problems. I also feel like throughout all of these shoots I have grasped a much better understanding of lighting - especially with working with Lewis so much who is a great gaffer. I found it difficult before to even explain what sort of lighting I wanted, now I feel much better equipped to not only explain it but also achieve it. That's probably been the most valuable thing I have learned this semester as I felt it really curtailed my technical and creative skills before.

I'm super happy with the footage we got. I was worried about there not being enough coverage with the schedule we had but I have since seen the edit and it does seem like it flows well. I have only seen it once before picture lock but I do remember wishing we got a wide of the hallway scenes - we just didn't have the time for that unfortunately.
Either way, I'm super excited to see the finished product!!

Primer for metal pipes for outdoor use

Priming exterior metal pipes requires careful preparation. Flaking rust and peeling paint must be scraped off, and dirt and grease washed off before a rust-resistant primer is applied. A clean pipe with a lightly sanded exterior provides the best surface for a primer to adhere to. Proper priming of exterior metal not only provides a professional finish, but also protects pipes from the elements. Scrub the exterior metal pipe with a degreaser and steel wool to remove dirt and oil residue, as well as flaking rust and paint. Clean the pipe with a pressure washer to remove all traces of the cleaner and other residue. Wait until the pipe is completely dry before proceeding to the next step. Scrape off any remaining rust residue or caked paint with a wire brush. Wipe off the particles with a duster. Sand the surface of the pipe with 120 grit sandpaper to scrape up the surface for better adhesion of the primer. Apply painter's tape to the areas that should not come in contact with the primer. Cover the floor under the pipe with a drop cloth. Paint the pipe with a rust-resistant bonding primer. If using a spray primer, hold the can 15 to 20 inches from the pipe and apply an even coat over the entire surface. If using a brush primer, dip a clean brush into the can and apply a thin coat of primer to the entire surface. If indicated on the label, apply another coat. Wait for the primer to dry completely before applying any exterior paint. How to remove rust from a metal pipe When metal pipes are exposed to a humid environment, they can start to rust. This form of corrosion, with its reddish-brown stains, is not only unsightly, but also damaging to the integrity of the pipe, as rust eats through certain ferrous metals like iron and steel. A thorough sanding with sandpaper followed by a coat of rust-inhibiting primer and paint will ensure a longer life for your metal pipes. Scrub the metal pipe with a wire brush to remove all rust scale. Rub a fine grit sandpaper over the pipe surface in a circular motion to remove any stuck rust that was missed by the wire brush. Wipe away dust with a duster.
