Title lost
A coupla hitters for your end of Novembs—
Body Void, Atrocity Machine (Prosthetic)
I caught Body Void on their massive tour with Primitive Man, Mortiferum, Jarhead Fertilizer and Elizabeth Colour Wheel last year, and they stunned me with their singular-minded approach to make music as heavy and seething as possible with a guitar-bass-drums trio. In the live setting, they reminded me of bands like Fistula (the riffs) and Indian (the vocals), but for me, Body Void's recordings didn't stack up. Now, having augmented their setup with heaps of abrasive electronics to fill every space on Atrocity Machine with glass, rust and asphalt, I can definitely say they've captured the power of their live shows. The first two proper tracks, "Human Greenhouse" and "Flesh Market," are similar in spirit to their old tracks (slow leaden riffs, maybe a fast part, less concerned with structure than texture), albeit trimmed in length and twice as caustic. It's "Cop Show" that really announces the band's arrival, a nauseating see-saw whirr accompanying every downstroke, grinding the listener down for over six minutes until a slightly different version of the riff comes back for the pile-driving finish. The flip features two songs stretching over 10 minutes each, again recalling earlier recordings, but made whole with electronic noise. As exhausting as "Divine Violence" might seem halfway through, it's an agonizingly slow build to a blinding finish, and you'll be inadvertently headbanging throughout. The title track closes the record out in similarly smothering fashion, electronics whipping up sand storms while the band hammers out a riff swinging ominously like a pendulum, everything except the drums eventually ceding to the painful electronics over the final minutes. This is admittedly a tough sell in an oppressively bleak world, in a society intent on destroying itself, but it's a feat to make music this physically and psychologically punishing. As suffocatingly dense as the sound can be, it's no surprise that when Atrocity Machine ends, you're exhausted; but when it's on, and you're immersed in their onslaught, you don't want it to end, either.
Lewsberg, Out and About (12XU)
If there's a sound that will evoke memories of summer/fall 2023 for me, it's gonna be the warm drone introducing "Angle of Reflection," the opening track on Lewsberg's latest record Out and About. Anyone hoping the band would return to the comparatively uptempo self-titled and In This House LPs will be disappointed, as last year's In Your Hands proves itself to be more than a transitional record. At the time, that record seemed intentionally pared down to reflect the group's ranks shrinking from four to three, but the approach appears to have been instructional for the band in some sense. Everything on Out and About feels intentional, very little left to chance, not a hair out of place. Yet even with such a seemingly calculated approach, the band played one of my favorite sets I've seen this year, covering most of Out and About with equal parts precision (Michiel Klein stock-still delivering the searing solo on highlight "An Ear to the Chest") and an infectious enthusiasm. I'm not sure if that enthusiasm bleeds into the record for anyone who hasn't seen Lewsberg live, but I think I've come to prefer this refined version of the band, prone to roomy, sparkling guitar lines, simple floor tom accompaniment, and softly delivered vocals. It is very much a pop record, one that works as social or background music, but there's enough going on under the surface to satisfy a close listen or 20. Shalita Dietrich's rich bass line on "A Different View," the vocal interplay between Dietrich and newest member Marrit Meinema on "Without a Doubt," and Ari van Vliet's violin on "Canines" show a band that is very much buttoned-down, professional and yet still finding new spaces within a well-worn pop framework. Yes, I can do without the precious spoken word of "There's a Poet In the Bushes," but I'm glad they took the swing; this band is nothing if not outwardly bookish. The lyrics across Out and About - funny, pensive, never maudlin or self-pitying - point to a more complicated humanity behind it all, of course, and Meinema's contributions in that department fit right in. It's clear that Lewsberg have transcended the VU influence and have grown into their sound, and they arrive fully-formed on Out and About. One of my top favorites from this year, and easily my most listened to record of this year.
Jef Mertens, No Mathematics (Feeding Tube/Kraak)
New solo album from Jef Mertens, a bastion of the noise/drone scene in Belgium and abroad. Not sure what hipped me to this release - maybe the Kraak newsletter, because who can keep up with Feeding Tube's release schedule - but in any case it's a keeper. Mertens is on guitar and shruti box, both of which give his droning compositions a warm-yet-metallic feel, a sound reminiscent of artists like K-Group. He's accompanied by Nickolas Mohanna on a few tracks, contributing "electronics, rhythmic pads and treated zithers," giving a track like "Metal" an almost rhythmic backbone, pushing Mertens outside of the meditative circles he tends to run on his own. There's more than a hint of Pauline Oliveros' influence evident, on "Hapering" especially, where it's easy to become immersed in the majestic repeating pattern. No Mathematics instills an eerie calm on record, and I imagine Mertens is similarly able to silence small concert venues across Europe easily with his gently welcoming yet powerful pieces, soothing the most frayed of nerves, or at least getting folks out of their heads for a few minutes.
Emily Robb, If I Am Misery Then Give Me Affection (Petty Bunco)
A welcome return from Emily Robb, following up How to Moonwalk with a more introspective, yet no less sizzling record. If I Am Misery Then Give Me Affection comes with a promise of "high-minded celebration of guitar and sound and tone and string and amp," and that's about the gist of it. No Yngwie Malmsteen-style pyrotechnics here, just a detailed investigation into the instrument, channeling a cozy scratchy knit blanket ("Hermit's Cave"), providing a generous two-track dissection of "Black Angel Death Song"'s violent instrumental ("Dispenser" and "Slowing Singing Bathing Shaving") and sometimes just capturing in high fidelity an interesting noise ad nauseam ("Bells," an admittedly strange favorite). There are, of course, some more straightforward bits like "A Kiss" and "Solo In A" that should make most musicians want Robb in their band, but I find the tracks that mine the exploration of the guitar and exploit the possibilities of the studio to be the most compelling. There is a patient, calm feel to the record, best exemplified by the stunning lonesome electric blues of "There It Goes Again" and "First Grow a Gold Plant," that has been a perfect accompaniment to early mornings. It's rare that I don't flip the record straight over after the smoldering "Rolling Electric Ball" finishes, not wanting to leave the orbit of If I Am Misery, and that's not something I can say about many instrumental records, guitar-based or not. I'd say I can't wait for what's next, but I'm perfectly content when this one's on.

Hey! I'm sending you a message because I love your fanfic, Beneath The Mask. It's really immersive! Your writing is so impressive, and your Alastor and Charlie feel so real! You really display every part of them so well, from their attire to their mannerisms and inner thoughts. And you balance it with your amazing plot so masterfully! I'm curious as to what resources you use when you research the place and time period. It's because I'm working on my own Charlastor fanfic in the same setting (1920's-1930's New Orleans). You're a writer that I look up to, so I thought I'd reach out to ask you for advice. Thanks!
Aw, thank you! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying my work that much. :D
Well, odd as it is to say, when it comes to researching the 1930s, YouTube is a fantastic place to start. There are loads of documentaries about the roaring twenties, as well as the Great Depression, uploaded on there that go into great detail about everything from daily life, to fashion, to racial and societal tensions, to even old diary entries, and whenever I'm doing something I don't want to, I'll put on one of those so the grind of vacuuming doesn't seem nearly so monotonous.
However, I would recommend not just listening to the ones about the economy and the stock market crash. While they do play an integral part in what went down back then and are definitely worth a listen, it's vital to take into account the human suffering on the ground level that occurred at the time, too.
Wall Street is important, but Main Street is everything.
People were starving, dying in the streets, and kicked out of their homes because they couldn't pay the rent. Poverty was rampant, loads of families had to uproot across state lines, just to survive, and the dust bowl was sweeping through the US farming country, making it unviable for planting and raising livestock. Civil unrest was all over the place, debt, both personal and commercial, was at an all time high, roughly 25% of all working Americans were unemployed, riots and police standoffs were occurring everywhere one looked, like what happened with the bonus army in 1932 in DC, and brutality and scapegoating were the way of the day, with random acts of violence against one other on the rise every day that went by, regardless of whether or not there was even a reason, be it perceived or real.
So, the human struggle against scarcity, despair, misery and hopelessness that the Depression brought which persisted throughout that time period is essential to take into account when writing about it, as it affected almost everyone and usually stayed with them to some degree for the rest of their lives, even long after the depression itself was gone.
Which is why a lot of old people who lived through it never threw anything away, eschewed any and all kinds of waste, and washed and folded up used tinfoil, among other things.
Another important aspect about the Great Depression and the roaring twenties that proceeded it is that everything is intertwined and connected with each other to an almost disturbing degree. For instance, the release of labor saving devices, shiny new inventions and household appliances, such as electric washing machines, radios, cars and what have you, behooved people to take on a boatload of debt in order to purchase them, which, in turn, put them into a bad financial position when the bottom fell out of the economy and they'd no way of paying their loans back because they were without a job.
The banks going bust and there not being any sort of insurance to cover the financial losses at the time didn't help, either.
Hemlines in skirts also have a way of either rising or falling depending on the state of the economy as well. If it's a bull market, the hemlines rise. If it's a bear, they fall down to the floor.
Also, the YouTube channel, 'Great Depression cooking with Clara', is a great window back into life in the days, so I'd look that up too, if you're so inclined.
As for fashion knowledge, I'd recommend either vintage dancer or glamour daze. They've got loads of tutorials for makeup and fashion from the turn of the century all the way up into the 80s, as well as real life magazine articles from back then, detailing how women, and sometimes men, were expected to dress in order to appear 'smart' in public, as being well groomed was a sign that one still had their act together, if only on the surface.
Hope that helps!
#bathsaltsmcgee#Q and A#B answers stuff#a history of the depression#Thank you for coming to my TED talk#I know way more about this era than I probably should#Nobody get me started on the differences between art deco art nouveau and art modern#you'll be here all night

Twenty Recettear Tips The Game Doesn’t Tell You
1. When a customer makes an advance order they will bring triple their maximum money. This is the only way to get Caillou to equip his ultimate staff unless you are willing to sell it at a loss when he asks for a weapon suggestion.
2. When selling equipment to an adventurer in an advance order they will only equip the item in slot number 1 (if they can equip it)
3. A customer will never pick up an item that is out of their budget, however, be careful when suggesting overly expensive items to customers in the early game as you can suggest one that they can't afford
4. It is possible to avoid Euria (scammer who only exists to break your combos) completely by just not going to town square in morning or noon after you have 100,000 pix, however if you haven't unlocked Tielle by this point, this will lock you out of all further dungeon progression. Get to Amber Garden and unlock her before this happens (clear Jade Way, obtain Charme’s business card, see the cutscene in town square morning or noon of an unknown girl looking for her sister, then have Charme show up in your shop drunk and talking about a new dungeon)
5. However, Euria is required for 100% completion as there are items only she can sell you, specifically the ocean wallpaper and floor set
6. It is possible to get Just bonuses with Euria by buying her items at a 360% markup, however 200% will usually be accepted on the first try
7. Euria can buy from vending machines but this doesn't necessarily deter her from selling to you - all customers can buy from a vending machine and still interact with you
8. Eskimo shoes (bad name I’m aware) prevent you from skidding on ice; blazing charms reduce fire damage
9. Rush through the Jade Way and pick up the items in Caillou's advance order (bat wing, charred lizard, slime liver) before he shows up (merchant rank 7) for some easter egg dialogue
10. Charme has a passive skill that lets her detect trap treasure chests
11. Deflated items placed in vending machines still sell at base price which is still a profit for you
12. Fusion food almost always sells at a loss and isn't worth it for adventuring due to its rarity, only use fusion food to get 100%
13. Customers will not pay extra for fusion items with +[1~15] on them; save these for your adventurers, it only affects their stats
14. Azure necklace and romantic’s cape are two early game fusion items that sell for huge profits and remain good to sell all the way through endgame. There are others like this later on; keep a fusion table on hand.
15. To gain Nagi as an adventurer more quickly, savescum to grind out one encounter a day in the Hall of Trials after day 9 (she will show up in any dungeon as a pink triangle on your map but Hall of Trials is the smallest dungeon) with her until you get four encounters, then just keep opening the shop. She will show up no matter what as she is one of the characters not affected by atmosphere.
16. Louie will never show up if your shop is too gaudy, Griff will never show up if your shop is at all light. Keep this in mind if you want to be gearing them.
17. Nagi and Louie can automatically deflect physical projectiles by facing the enemy throwing them. This is lifesaving in the early game and useless in the endgame where all projectiles become magical.
18. You can go to a dungeon twice a day if you go to the Adventurer's Guild first thing in the morning before going ANYWHERE else.
19. It is possible to oversaturate the market and crash the value for one item so always keep a large variety in stock, especially once customers start asking for non-specific items.
20. Most importantly! Tear’s selling tutorial is terrible. Sell at around 105% to 110% of base price (200% to 220% if it’s an inflated item), that way your customers will level up more quickly and their budgets will increase. You will make way more money in the long run.

Unveiling the Timeless Elegance: Stone Floor Polishing
In the realm of interior design, few elements exude the timeless allure and sophistication quite like stone floors. Whether it's marble, granite, limestone, or travertine, stone floors add a touch of luxury and class to any space they adorn. However, maintaining the pristine beauty of these natural wonders requires diligent care and periodic maintenance. This is where the art of stone floor polishing comes into play.
The Beauty of Natural Stone Floors
Before delving into the intricacies of stone floor polishing, let's take a moment to appreciate the inherent beauty of natural stone floors. Each slab tells a unique story, with its own veins, swirls, and hues, crafted over millions of years by the forces of nature. From the opulent opulence of marble to the earthy charm of travertine, these stones lend an air of sophistication to both residential and commercial settings.
The Need for Polishing
Despite their durability, natural stone floors are not impervious to wear and tear. Over time, foot traffic, spills, and environmental factors can take a toll on their appearance, leaving them dull, scratched, or stained. This is where stone floor polishing becomes essential. Polishing not only restores the luster and shine of the stone but also helps to protect it from future damage, prolonging its lifespan and beauty.
The Polishing Process
Stone floor polishing is a meticulous process that requires skill, expertise, and the right tools and techniques. Here's a brief overview of the typical polishing process:
Assessment: A professional stone care specialist will assess the condition of the floor to determine the extent of damage and the most suitable polishing method.
Preparation: The floor is thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, debris, and any surface contaminants. This step is crucial to ensure that the polishing compounds can penetrate the stone effectively.
Grinding: If the floor has deep scratches, etchings, or uneven surfaces, grinding may be necessary to level the stone and create a smooth, uniform surface.
Polishing Compounds: Specialized polishing compounds are applied to the stone surface using polishing machines equipped with abrasive pads or diamond discs. These compounds help to remove fine scratches, stains, and imperfections, while also enhancing the stone's natural luster.
Buffing: Once the desired level of polish is achieved, the floor is buffed to a brilliant shine, using polishing pads or brushes.
Sealing: To protect the newly polished surface and prevent future damage, a high-quality sealant may be applied. This helps to repel moisture, stains, and spills, keeping the stone looking pristine for years to come.
The Benefits of Professional Polishing
While there are DIY polishing kits available on the market, achieving professional-grade results requires the expertise of trained professionals. Here are some benefits of hiring a professional stone care company for your floor polishing needs:
Expertise: Professional stone care specialists have the knowledge, experience, and tools to assess the unique characteristics of your stone floor and determine the most effective polishing method.
Quality Results: By using industry-leading techniques and products, professionals can achieve superior results that far surpass those of DIY methods.
Time and Cost Savings: While DIY polishing may seem like a cost-effective option initially, it can be time-consuming and may yield subpar results. Professional polishing services offer a convenient and efficient solution, saving you time and hassle in the long run.
Long-Term Protection: Professional sealants help to safeguard your stone floor against future damage, reducing the need for frequent maintenance and repairs.
In Conclusion
Stone floor polishing is not just a maintenance task; it's a transformative process that can breathe new life into your space. By entrusting your floors to the care of skilled professionals, you can preserve their beauty and elegance for generations to come. So why wait? Give your stone floors the love and attention they deserve, and let their timeless allure shine through for years to come.

Sure! A fruit juicer machine, also known simply as a juicer or juice extractor, is a kitchen appliance used to extract juice from fruits and vegetables. These machines usually work by crushing or straining fruits and vegetables to separate the juice from the pulp.
There are several types of fruit juicer machines available in the market, including:
1. Centrifugal Juicers: These are the most common types of juicers. They work by rotating the produce at high speed using centrifugal force to separate the juice from the pulp. Centrifugal juicers are generally more affordable and work faster, but they may not be as efficient at extracting juice from vegetables and produce less nutritious juice due to oxidation.
2. Masticating juicers: Also known as slow juicers or cold press juicers, masticating juicers grind and squeeze produce at a slow rate, resulting in less heat and oxidation. They are more efficient at extracting juice from leafy greens and produce higher quality juice with more nutrients. However, they tend to be more expensive and slower than centrifugal juicers.
3. Citrus Juicers: These juicers are specially designed for citrus fruits like oranges, lemons and grapes. They usually come in manual or electric versions and are optimized to efficiently extract juice from citrus fruits.
4. Twin Gear Juicers: These juicers use twin gears to grind and press fruits and vegetables, extracting juice with minimum oxidation and maximum nutrient retention. They are often considered the most efficient type of juicer but also tend to be the most expensive.
When choosing a fruit juicer machine, consider the types of fruits and vegetables you will be juicing, your budget, ease of cleaning, and how much juice you need to make at a time. Additionally, reading reviews and comparing features can help you find the best juicer for your needs.

First floor Frippery, Sanctuary & platform boots…
... Mule and Nashville balladry, agitprop and blues. Going up!
Department stores might seem a strange analogy for an album inspired in part by Eastern mystic philosophies of enlightenment, and partly by Marx & Engels’ call for the violent overthrow of the state, but you can’t deny Mike has laid out an eye- (and ear-) catching range of shiny, varied wares (though all bearing the manufacturer’s unmistakeable imprimatur). And the music business is after all a branch of retail: there is a point where artist meets artisan, and the demands of commerce are never far away. So do market forces explain the heavier direction taken on most of his latest release, Third Eye Open?
That added heft is epitomised by the Cult-in-their-late-80s-pomp overdriven wall of power chords, eastern-spiced lead lines, and thick reverbed-up drums of I Swear, backed (or indeed ‘fronted’) by Derek Randall’s highly aggressive, to-the-fore, low-slung bass, like Allen Woody on steroids (particularly in the grinding middle break). Cool Water carries that vibe forward, filling-rattling bass and acerbic Dancing Days rhythm guitar, with unison vox-and-lead-guitar melody lines emphasised by Darren Lee’s machine-gun fills and the very Zeppish tutti ‘stabs’.
The title track’s noodling, headphone-swapping intro belies the bludgeoning riffing to come: a portentous Mule-cover-Sabbath half-tone falling chordal riff leads to a blues on PCP progression, with blistering polemical lyrics delivered with real venom and a Rocky Mountain Way chorus. There’s gentler moments though in the extended “Short, sharp shock” Dark Side midbreak of melodic slide and relaxed drums, with spoken (though not quite audible) lyrics.
Zep/Cult touches appear even in the backwoods resonator-picking of Born To Me in the bursts of unison guitar and drums, but overall the hillbilly beat and multi-voice choral harmonies (including a guesting Jack Hutchinson, who also adds to the BVs on I Swear, The Preacher and Never No More) lend an Oh Brother Where Art Thou?-after-toad-licking swamp revivalist meeting atmosphere… at least until the closing vortex of stinging slide.
A chance to catch your breath after the helter-skelter opening comes in Fallen Down: tighter snare rolls and fluid, less-in-your-face bass back a Western-badlands-tinged amble with a stadium chorus. Also marginally less explosive is Face By Your Window: originally a laid-back candidate for 2019s Clovis Limit Pt2, it returns after a gym workout - the hypnotic resonator blues picking underpinned with military rolls and a steady bass pulse, plus some superb electric slide ornamentation; the gritty, half-spoken delivery and a spare slide solo make for a very echt blues feel.
It’s back on the high octane mixture for the twin pairing of The Preacher and Ugly Brain: the former matching a James Gangesque laddish swagger with a sackload of glam glitter, particularly in the overhead slow-clap crowd-participation chorus and multi-vox terrace chant vibe, and there’s also a lovely sweet’n’sour pinch harmonic solo; the latter (rhythmically and sonically very similar but lent a boogieing swing) features Mike’s Joe Walshish playful sardonic snarl, a catchy playground vocal hook and, yes, cowbell!
Mike shows his romantic side in the Nashville-ballad-with-a-hint-of-The-West duet (Be With You) Tonight, swapping verses with Jess Hayes (daughter of Richard and Val of Bad Influence, and leader of her own band). A little out of character with the rest of the album, (and to Plunger’s ears reminiscent of Pussycat’s Mississippi) it does feature excellent guitar, both in a twangsome cowboy lower register break and exquisite soaring Gary-Moore-does-Comfortably Numb sustain guitar, as well as lovely organ in an extended coda.
Things get heavy again (musically and lyrically) with the closing pair: Never No More channels Cortez The Killer in a febrile philippic against politicians, plutocrats and the powerful - a menacing, loping riff topped with howling feedback accents and highly Youngian noodling, and the return of the thick, meaty drum tone (this time from Brian Irwin); Kicks Like A Mule continues the invective assault over a Damned-cover-25 Or 6 To 4 (or While My Guitar Gently Weeps, if you prefer) descending riff, complete with fleet-fingered southern-fried soloing and two-part harmony guitars, and another lengthy coda.
The pick of the album for Plunger though is track nine, Eulogy - a brutal Belew-era-Crimson aural bombardment in sevens (and this is by no means the only track that flirts with tricksy timings!), with appropriately angular ascending riff: alternating a bruising bass-led near-spoken Thorazine Shuffle verse with a searing wall-of-fuzz screamed ‘chorus’ and highly complex very Frippish atonal solo… stunning stuff, and indicative of Mike’s boundary-stretching versatility and invention.
As with all Mike’s band albums the production throughout is lush and many-layered, from the multi-tracked harmony (and non-harmony) vocals and doubled- or tripled-up guitar parts to quirky touches like the something-that-sounds-like-jew’s-harp (actually a Hohner Clavinet through a wah pedal, like Cripple Creek by The Band) on Born To Me or the washboard ‘snare rolls’ on Face At Your Window. The guitar work is sublime (natch!) even if there’s understandably less discursive soloing than on Peach Jam - the range of ferocity, expression and tone is an object lesson in taste and artistry (particularly his slide playing), while the vocals are more vitriolic and passionate than Plunger think they’ve ever been…
… and that’s likely the real key to the heftier nature of Third Eye Open: the times we live in (and Mike’s obvious disgust with them) are probably reasons enough to go full tonto on the heaviness front…
Whatever the inspiration, as young Mr Grace says, it’s ‘all done very well!’
Third Eye Open is released on Friday 28th April, available from the usual online suspects and is available to pre-order here: https://shop.mikerossmusic.co.uk/product/third-eye-open-cd for CD and here: https://shop.mikerossmusic.co.uk/product/third-eye-open-vinyl for marble vinyl 12″ album.
