Star Trek DS9 Rewatch Log, Stardate 1905.24: Missions Reviewed, “Cardassians,” and “Melora.”

While Doctor Bashir and Garak the tailor are flirtingchatting over breakfast, a Bajoran man with a Cardassian boy enter the replimat. When Garak approaches him, the young man takes a bite out of him, setting off a chain of events wrapped around Cardassian War Orphans on Bajor.  

Gul Dukat becomes personally involved, leading to questions of whether the Bajoran adoptive parents are abusing the boy. Dukat claims to have found the boy’s biological father, a prominent Cardassian politician.  Garak steps in to help Bashir do a little digging. While all this is going on, the boy is staying with the O’Briens, causing Miles to confront some of his own bigotry toward Cardassians.  Garak helps Bashir reveal that Dukat may have been behind the boy’s separation from his family 8 years earlier, and now wants to discredit the father for having “abandoned” his son. The child is still sent back to Cardassia with his birth father, and Dukat now is aware Garak is not on his side.

This is a well structured episode which finds a lot of really interesting ways to deal with bigotry. Between a boy who is ethnically Cardassian hating his own people and the question if that extends to self-loathing, and O’Brien, who has bad Cardassian relations going back to the excellent TNG episode “The Wounded,” there’s a lot of complex and realistic emotions playing out here. This is also the first time we’ve seen Garak since early in season 1, and just a little more of his mysterious background comes into focus…kind of. Also, Sisko is particularly sassy this whole episode, making for some pretty funny moments.

When “Melora,” a Starfleet stellar cartographer arrives on DS9 for a special assignment, Bashir has made a number of modifications for her. She is from a low gravity planet, meaning she can’t handle 1G without an exoskeleton, and still needs a wheelchair to get around. Only in her quarters can she turn of the gravity and be comfortable.

 Meanwhile, Quark is in trouble when a man he sold out to the Romulans a few years before comes calling and tells Quark he plans to kill him. Bashir finds he may have developed a method of restructuring Melora’s neuro-muscular system to allow her to operate in regular gravity; it means though she will not be able to return to her homeworld, and leave her unable to “fly” in her quarters. Additionally, when she and Dax are taken hostage by the man trying to kill Quark, she is able to turn off the gravity in the Runabout and outmaneuver the villain, saving the day. In the end, she decides she will remain who she has been, accepting her differences.

This episode is interesting given that Melora is based on an early version of Dax, but the budget wasn’t going to support all that non-gravity filming.  The story feels a bit hamfisted in places, and I can’t figure out how Bashir managed to get through 4 years of Starfleet Academy without ever having done zero-G training.  We do continue however to get more hints of Julian actually being competent when he manages to come up with the therapy that will allow Melora to work in gravity normally. Though ultimately just an OK episode, it would have been nice to have seen the Melora character come back at some point, more comfortable in her own skin.

NEXT MISSION: Quark finds out his new partner, despite serious business acumen, literally doesn’t have the lobes for it in “Rules of Acquisition.”
