Her face is blotchy and red, and she's already turning away and it's all he can do to grab her wrist and tell her, "never, ever think that you're unloveable just because all I have to to offer you is friendship my Nathalie."

He sees the bob of her throat as she swallows, and hates that he knows that had he still his Miraculous she'd be ripe for an akuma right now.

But she looks up and meets his eyes, strong as ever despite yet another blow to her hopes, "but you could never...."

"No," he sighs and takes a step closer, "it's nothing you've done, or failed to do- don't even think that. You can't change this. I do love you, but I can't be the man who's in love with you."

"I understand sir." He hates the flatness to her voice, that she thinks she has to act for him. "I should, I should go."

"Don't feel like that." He pulls her close, and despite her words she doesn't fight it. "I don't think any less of you for your feelings."

"You've known for a while haven't you?" She whispers against his chest.

Rubbing his best attempt at comforting circles into her back he confirms, "My Miraculous."

She makes a sound halfway between a sob and a laugh. "I should have known. Stupid of me to think I'd succeeded in keeping it secret."

"Had I not had a Miraculous I wouldn't have. You never let it slip."

"Neither did you. I'd have thought that if you'd known-"

He holds her a little tighter. It's all he can do when, "I know how loyal you are Nathalie, so it never worried me. In fact it was a comfort. Unfair of me I admit, but knowing someone still cared for me like you did- it gave me the strength to continue."

"Please never say that to Adrien.'

"Oh he knows who to blame."

"I never-" She looks up at him, those eyes shining with sincerity like shallow water in sunlight," you know I'd never have sabotaged your attempts to get Emilie back. It's just now that-"

"I know." The weight of the knowledge that is wife is gone lies heavy enough on him he can barely can out of bed. "I understand why you spoke up now. I've been..." cataconic, useless, likely to tank his company, the choices of descriptors are endless and yet he doesn't want to admit any of them even though Nathalie knows.

"Acting like you have nothing left." Her voice is stronger now, firm. Like the Nathalie who had stood by Hawk Moth's side. "But you do, even if I don't count you have Adrien."

"I have you too." He rushes to reassure her, after all, "You've always been the one reminding me to live, and that's why I should do the same for you."

"I don't,"

"You," he cradles her cheek with one hand, "are a beautiful,"

"Hmph," She pulls her face away from him, "don't lie to me."

"You are. I realise it's hard to remember that in this industry but when you were younger you could have modelled. You have the height." And certainly the ability for the build, even if she's always run a little more muscular than the catwalk models.

"Models have to photograph well. Not one of my talents." But she at least rests her head back against his shoulder.

"That doesn't mean you're not gorgeous in the flesh. And you have twice, more than twice, the talents of most of those girls."

"Thank you I suppose."

There's no sincerity but he supposed he can't blame her. Was it Emilie rejecting him like that then-

Then Gabriel isn't sure what he'd have done, except that he's sure that Emilie and Nathalie and even the then non-existent Adrien would be very upset with him.

He presses a kisss to the top fo her head. "You will find someone you know. There is nothing deficient in you. The lack is in me. And one day some man is going to love you the way you love me. And I'll let you go, because that's the right thing to do even if miserly as I might be I wish I could keep you all to myself."

He can't even wish that Nathalie wasn't in love him, that she only loved him as he did her, because the truth is he wants how she is for him now forever. But he's done enough unfair things to her. Adrien would tell him that.

She stays pressed against his shoulder and it hits him she's hiding her face from him. "You don't have to lie to me to make me feel better."

"I'm not lying."

It's the truth and yet he can feel he hasn't convinced her from her hand against his chest.

"I think I'm going to go to my room." She says with a subtle push agaisnt him.

He doesn't let her go yet, "Nathalie..."

"Your rejection has been very kind. But it's still rejection. Surely you can understand my wanting some time alone."

"I suppose. Just- don't do anything stupid."

"I know better than that now." She pulls away from him, "Goodnight Gabriel."

It sounds more like goodbye the way she says it.

The BEST gabenath fanfic of all time and I will defend it until the very end щ(゜ロ゜щ) It never fails to make me tear up, and I could read it over and over without getting tired of it, I am constantly hooked at everything that happened in here and more. It's very hard-hitting and emotional and digs deep into my chest and I could sing praises of this fic all the time. Rated M.

2. Calamity Dusk by 11JJ11 (@graaythekwami)

The first fanfic I have ever read for gabenath. In fact, I've read this well before I was ever in the gabenath ship. It's such a fresh take on the series and on gabenath in general that I find myself going back to it over and over again just to get that feeling in my system. The action! The drama! The suspense! It's just 😙👌! Rated T.

3. Birth by carolatavs (@carolatvs)

Every so often I say to myself, hmm, I would like to read Birth again. I would like to feel Gabriel's utter confusion again. I would like to see him struggle with Nathalie. I would like to read it and fantasize about hitting him round the head with a baseball bat ( •̀ ω •́ )✧ Rated T.

A late addition to this list since I last made one but this fic nestled deep in my chest and wouldn't let go. It's an episode on its own! There's a good intro, a good setup, and frankly well-executed battle scene, and that ending! That finale! I reread the whole fic just to get sucker-punched by the feels of the final parts. Rated T.

5. The Beginning of Goodbye by dishwater_blondie (@dishwater-blondie)

Yes, it's the whole series. Yes I meant all of them. Why not? This series is gut-wrenching, action-packed, devastating, and cathartic—there were many times in the series where I had to put my phone down to go scream silently and digest it all because it's that good. Rated G-T.

Summary: This fic is a one-shot in which, Gabriel and Nathalie attend one of Audrey Bourgeois's parties and while in attendance, they make an acquaintance with one of Audrey's newer and younger models who takes quite the liking and interest in Gabriel. This model's flirtatious antics make Gabriel feel quite uncomfortable and so as a distraction he pulls Nathalie aside to engage in some more pleasurable activities --- though there may be more emotional ties hidden behind these activities then both Nathalie and Gabriel anticipated. This fic contains explicit content which means it is meant for mature audiences (18+) so read with caution.

Summary: This fic is a very short one-shot that is mainly hawkyura (Hawkmoth x Mayura) centric but I love it so much that I had to include it here! Anyway, the fic involves Mayura and Hawkmoth sharing a very intimate moment and whilst in it, Hawkmoth reflects on the bounds of his and Nathalie/Mayura's relationship and how he really feels deep down. This fic is really short but it is written so beautifully that I promise you it is worth a read! Although this fic does contain explicit content which means it is meant for mature audiences (18+) so read with caution.

Summary: This fic is full of a bunch of one-shots (some are connected to each other and others are not) detailing Gabriel and Nathalie's relationship and how it developed. Most of the chapters do contain mature/explicit content but they are also full of a lot of fluff and angst which makes the fic itself really intriguing --- definitely recommend.

Summary: This fic is honestly one of my favorites! It is based upon or you could say inspired by the amazing gabenath comic Please Take Me Dancing Tonight by @stopaskingmetowearthatwig where it goes into very explicit detail about the night that Nathalie and Shadownoir shared after he came to check up on her after the incident of his failed akuma attack. If you love that comic as much as I do, I can promise you that you'll love this fic. Although it does contain explicit content which means it is meant for mature audiences (18+) so read with caution.

Summary: First of all before I give a quick summary of this fic if you haven't seen the movie or know the basic story of Phantom of the Opera then this not the fic for you, because you will need context from the original source material to understand this fic. Anyways, with that out of the way, this fic is a one-shot that begins with Nathalie Sancouer an opera singer who has finally got the chance to have a lead part on the stage and tonight --- is her opening night! Now normally Nathalie would wear whatever the opera permits her to wear on stage for her big day, that is until she finds a beautiful dress --- unlike anything she's ever seen, waiting for her in her room. This dress is left by none other than the mysterious masked phantom who roams the opera halls and designs dresses for those he deems worthy. Nathalie, grateful for the gorgeous gown the phantom designed just for her, is determined to unmask the man and find out his secrets. This fic contains explicit content which means it is meant for mature audiences (18+) so read with caution.
