For the "suprise snake" discussion, how different from Fleshbag Marauder is it? It sounds pretty close to accomplishable in monoblack. If the fight ability is involved, would letting your opponent choose which creature fights it change the outcome?
Fight just isn't a black ability. You're can destroy a creature. You can force it to be sacrificed. There are lots of ways for black to kill a creature as an "enter the battlefield" effect. Fighting just isn't one of them. Black simply doesn't need it.

New “budget” Commander cards: Phyrexia: All Will Be One Edition: Black
Alright, an extension of the sleeper series for the set that isn’t out yet to sleep. Hopefully I can get to them before they fall asleep. This will focus on cards that are currently under $5, most of these will likely lower, but some might explode if the card really gets popular. Most of the expensive mythics are also pretty good, but you could see that with half an eye. We’ll also mostly focus on more generic cards, rather than archetype specific ones. If the card says “equipped creatures are better” or “if you poison them, draw five cards” you can probably figure out in which decks those go. We’ll go color by color, in WUBRG order.
Instant-speed reanimation that’s also a modular removal spell. Not the worst option, probably not the best in most decks.
I include this card despite its home being fairly obvious, because it’s more than just a card draw spell. Given token decks’ propensity to vomit artifacts onto the board, this will occasionally also allow you to just kill someone, which is neat.
If you want an edict spell, this is the best edict. Modal, dodges the usual weakness of tokens, can hit the occasional planeswalker, and hits all opponents. Usually probably worse than a plaguecrafter or fleshbag marauder though.
This card getting oil from tokens dying, both creatures and artifacts (treasures included) means it’s a pretty solid cheap way to repeatedly reanimate in decks that have either the creatures or artifacts to fuel it. Some creatures outright create enough tokens to infinitely bring back with this!

Happy birthday to Fleshbag Marauder (SLD), who's turning 1 year old today! Every printing of this card is absolutely disgusting and I love it.

Yeah, my motivation has plummeted and we're full on into the post-Inktober depression. It's one thing if people are just less into my stuff the other months of the year, but the total, utter nothing is just an excruciating pronouncement of how irrelevant I am. Anyway, studying some of the random cards that are in the Midweek Magic zombie precon. I went with the Gisa deck, of course. It's is horrendous. How do you build a deck with Swamps that has no removal aside from recurring Fleshbag Marauder? That's Gisa in the bottom right, by the way--never got to cast her.

Yep. Someone was playing a precon, so they asked if the pace would accommodate that.
Considering I didn't seal out the game until turn eleven or so, I'm confident I didn't misrepresent what I was playing.
Just poor choices at the table. If you know I have Fleshbag Marauder in hand, you shouldn't tap out for a single big creature after I boardwipe...two players did that.
Just stomped some strangers at the game store 😇

Probably a dumb question to ask, but it really caused a stir in my EDH playgroup recently. The Meren player had a Heartless summoning on the field and cast himself a Reclaimation Sage. Now we all ended up agreeing that it gets it's ETB trigger, and I'd like to know if we were right there. The real concerns came up when he resolved a Fleshbag Marauder. We again agreed that he got the ETB trigger, but then he tried to sac the Fleshbag. Is that possible? Would state based actions not kill it first?
The triggers happen, but the creatures are in the graveyard before those triggers ever go on the stack. Your opponent can’t sacrifice the Fleshbag Marauder to its own trigger since it’s not on the battlefield when the trigger resolves.

You were in the right place at the wrong time.
No longer caring about the crimes that you were slandered by and falsely imputed with, you roam empty-handed the lawless and dilapidated streets of the 8th Sector's wall market, a place so far removed from the safety of the walls of the Centralized Government that mafia circles run with impunity and the prevailing law is that of the strongest.
It doesn’t matter anymore who you were and what you achieved. Your entire life - your friends, your family, your home - simply turned their backs to you, treating you as a stranger as soon as the judge’s gavel slammed against the table. Yet, abandoning everything was a far less gruesome end that being sent to the ‘reformatory’, where you’d be forced into slave labor for a greedy corportation during the next 60 years.
And all you did was try to cast a light on an organ trafficking network that led to a few corrupted officials.
It's the year 2932, 60 years after the Android Rebellion and the passing of the Law regarding the prohibition of AI sentience as treason. Yet, despite that, the few supporters remaining, the hybrid folk that forfeited parts of their bodies and their humanity in exchange of power, and the ‘jailbroken’ Androids that managed to escape having their memories and personality wiped by the government linger among the colorful neon lights, trying to make meets end among the slums.
Feeling unnerved and noticing through the corner of your eye at least 4 hulking shadows that had been following you closely for a while, you scurried off into the nearest alley in a vague attempt to have them lose your trail… only to realize far too late that you pretty much gave yourself away, as picking a random direction only trapped you in a dead end, surrounded by the back of a store of some kind and stuttering blue and red neon signs.
Turning around, you saw 4 grinning men who almost doubled you in size approaching you slowly while smashing their attached weapons against the nearby dumpsters and walls. From the looks of it, they seemed to be 2 androids built like a wall and 2 hybrids that had been modified so far that they virtually looked like a machine turned inside out.
“If you’re looking for credits, I have none.” You tried to dissuade them.
“Obviously, you dickface.” One of them scoffed, “You look stupid and lost. But don’t worry, we’ll put your ass to good use. Fleshbags like yourself can net a good price, so we’ll be taking a few ‘pieces’ from you.”
The men laughed at your shocked expression. Oh, the irony that what sent you to this twisted place was right about to turn you into another number within your investigation.
“Now stay still. The less you struggle, the faster this will be.” Another one sneered as he approached you, a dented cleaver dangling from his fingers.
Adrenaline filled your veins as your breathing hastened, your mind trying to think of a way to avoid being hacked to pieces then and there. There was a solid wall behind you, four heavily armed men in front of you and nowhere to go. You stepped back in an attempt to keep your distance from the marauders, only to reflexively curl up after a particularly loud clang against a rusty metal pipe. The men took that as a signal and in a flash they launched towards you, two of them pinning you against the floor in the blink of an eye with your limbs painfully stretched out, your screams quickly muffled with a violent thrust of a baton that landed on your nose and the same weapon being forcefully jammed in your mouth.
“Shut it!” One of the men commanded as the other 2 reastraining you laughed at the blood pooling over your lips and the last one took out a small refrigerating containment unit from his backpack.
Much to your horror, you heard them discussing what organs were they going to harvest from you as the free ones carelessly ripped your clothes with his blade-like fingers, the one behind you suggesting to take off your limbs as well just for fun. You felt them tracing a Y-line over your chest and trailing down your abdomen as tears pooled on your eyes. You were sure they were going to hollow you out entirely… you had seen photos of the victims during your investigation and they all sported that similar wound… only for your muffled cries to peak once again as soon as one of those blades started digging on your flesh, forcing crimson droplets to form around the ruptured skin as the pain flooded your nerves.
“Tch, you filthy maggots. Did you not read the sign?” A male voice snarled behind the men, making them quickly turn to his direction, the blade fortunately removed from your skin, “NO. LITTERING.”
“Who’s this gray-ass motherfucker?” one of the mechanic gorillas blindly asked, noticing how the rest of his group tensed with haggard expressions marring their features. And yet, his inquiry was met with a sudden toppling swat from his armed companion, the baton no longer stuffed in your face.
“S-Sorry professor, we had no idea you had moved your shop here!” The one who just battered his lackey and had mocked you a mere couple of seconds ago now stuttered, his forehead tightly pressed against the floor as he kneeled and bowed.
“Get out of my face, I’m busy.” The man referred to as ‘the professor’ commanded coldly as he swiped with his hand in a derogatory sweeping motion, “And leave the fleshbag behind as …’tribute’ for your misconduct.”
The men quickly nodded and packed their things before leaving, the same batted gorilla asking once again what was going on and earning another painful jab.
“Get up. I’ll see you have that cut treated before it becomes infected.” The man that had accidentally saved your life instructed you, to which you quickly obliged.
You weren’t sure if your eyes were playing tricks on you, but you were almost sure you had stumbled upon some ancient hinduism diety walking among mortals. From his facial features, to his skin color and demeanor, nothing on this person looked remotely human, the only thing relatable was the small lollipop stick between his luscious black lips.
And just as you were gazing into the void, the void gazed back at you. The blond hulking figure gave you a once-over with an interested smirk.
“It’s been a while since I’ve seen an ‘insider’ here at the border. You might have a higher value than just your parts. Follow me.”
I’m sorry, I couldn't leave the image without context! And the "context" spun into a short reader-insert story because apparently I'm desperate for Dio content have no self-control. Welp, shit happens ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I had a lot of fun working with 3 light sources and I'm proud how the metallic bracelet/armlet ended up looking ^^
Professor Dio used to be one of the most outstanding eminences in the Robotics and AI development community as well as the creator of the original Android AI. Branded as a traitor after the 2872 Android Rebellion, it was thought he had been executed way back when. The rumors of him still lingering within the market were never confirmed.
If you’d like to know more about this setting, feel free to ask!

Toeing the Line - Balancing Act Runnners-Up
And here they are, in all their glory!
Dead on Revival by @masternexeon
One of these days, I’m going to receive a pun-based submission, and I’m not going to make it a winner. Someday. Eventually. This isn’t just about the pun, though, as good as it may be. This design begs the question of “how do I build around you?” Obviously, the answer is ETB/LTB effects, since you don’t have any priority to do anything else with the creature, but there are still so many interesting ways to take it. I would love to play around with this card and see what comes up, that’s for sure. As for the flavor, I love the point that you’re going for, and it’s delicious, but there’s a few qualms that kept this from the winner’s circle. Namely, this doesn’t feel like Tibalt. He’s a mostly red-aligned character who doesn’t have anything to do with reanimation, and while he appreciates some good torture, it doesn’t seem like he’d be particulalry intellectual about it like the flavor text implies. There are so many good sinister villains that this would work with, I just don’t think Tibalt is the best choice. Also, quote attributions are typically one line down, are still italicized (except for proper titles), and preceded by and emdash, which is the long one.
Offering to Belzenlok by @helloijustreadyourpost
I don’t know why I’m such a sucker for “the alternate cost is cheaper because in this case it’s actually a downside”, but you can make some really neat designs with it. Exhibit A: this card. The overall flavor is pretty generically creepy black card, but I do like the specificity of using the cabal, and even specifically calling out the Rite of Belzenlok. In limited, this is fairly similar to those Fleshbag Marauders we see at common every so often, but cheaper cause it doesn’t come with a fodder body. I think the versatility here is really nice, though I am curious about what this could imply about the set around it, apart from just “it has common black removal and is set on Dominaria”. It’s still a solid card though, and the flavor text is not too shabby either.
Valkas Intimidator by @snugz
So, ultimately on its own, this card is “when it attacks, target creature can’t block it this turn.” Which is fine! That’s functional, and not a bad spot to be for an uncommon. It gets really fun with the other intimidators, though, or anything else that can change creature types. Also, in warrior tribal the ability gets upgraded to a straight “can’t block this turn”, which is probably where it wants to be anyways. This card is not overly strong, but it does play nicely with some existing stuff, and I’d be happy to slot it in a mono red intimidators deck. That just sounds like fun. The flavor text is also pretty good. It’s very matter-of-fact, like you would find in an old fairy tale or parable, which honestly seems to fit with the general tone of Shandalar. Lots of good stuff to say about this card.
That’s all for this week! Stay tuned for commentary, I got a busy weekend of Jam-making ahead of me, but it’ll be out early next week.

King Kenrith group hug removal package?
Group Hug and Removal often seem like contradictory statements, but Hug needs an amount of removal to compete and keep the game from going bonkers. It just depends how you do it.
These cards offer removal that let your opponents have choice. We vote for what exiles, we choose what bounces (also see: Fleshbag Marauder), and we choose what sacrifices. Mythos also has an alt cost that allows you to force the choice in the endgame to win.
You can also play removal that affects your opponents equally. Kederekt here is a boardbounce on a body Kenrith can recur. Fortunate Few leads to interesting choices.
Then there’s removal that gives something in return. Also see: Fold into Aether for more effects like these.

Thieves in the Night
I’ve run a janky ninja deck with Vela at it’s helm for going on 4 years now. I seldom ever make any edits to it and it’s a budget brew on not much more than principles alone. It’s entire incentive until the release of Yuriko here was to steal people’s cards and win with those. I’d designed it all those moons ago because there was a friend in our playgroup at the time who had a lot more money than the rest of us. He had multiple cards in his deck worth more than any of our decks by themselves and I had grown a little tired of it. Now that there’s finally a U/B Ninja to pilot it, I decided to make a couple small changes and bring the deck to you folks!
Let’s start by talking about Yuriko. She gives the deck a lot more bite than previous iterations, making the damage potential your ninja’s can have much higher. Instead of them being tricky plays for some damage and some value, now they can take serious chunks of life from the opponents while generating even more value.
While all of our ninja’s can put in some work, none quite benefit the deck the way Higure does. Tutoring for whichever Ninja benefits us the most at the time while also allowing us to make any ninja unblockable for a measly 2 mana makes him impressive. Silent-Blade Oni on the other hand lends more towards the style of deck this was created to be, which is one that plays other people’s cards because we can’t afford them. If you can hit with Walker of the Secret Ways first to see the hands around the table you can try to either disrupt someone’s game-plan or just steal the best card around. Ink-Eyes fits in a similar vein, and doesn’t have as much of a risk || reward factor to her. You know what’s in people’s graveyards, so there’s no real chance of whiffing on her ability. Regeneration also makes her much more resilient than the other ninjas. Sakashima’s Student gets to clone the best ETB, Mistblade can be a sweet tempo play, Deep Hours draws cards, and Throat Slitter kills stuff. Walker of the Secret Ways allows us some interesting combat interactions, allowing us to bounce blocked ninja’s back to our hand and replace them with unblocked creatures. This creates this morphing, malleable board that’s very hard to interact with in a traditional combat sense.
While there is a lot of cool tech to be discussed when dealing with a deck full of unblockables, I think my favorite is the mechanic Cipher so I’m gonna highlight it here. You basically get to cast the spell twice the turn you play it, and once more every turn after until the creature is answered. Cloning the best creature on board on repeat is always fun, or you can just clone your own Perplexing Chimera over and over like I like to do. Ninjas aren’t cast when using Ninjitsu, so it can create this complete chaos where you have the upper hand. Whispering Madness lets you wheel every turn, and can be a massive value swing if you’ve emptied out your hand. You can also cast a spell or two after you resolve it, play a land, and then swing in to wheel again and fill back up. Undercity plague is just neat when placed on repeat. :)
Stealing people’s stuff is fun! Decklist below.
