The 57 countries that are better than the USA according to the current version of my overly-complicated "Nice Things Index" which I spend a lot of time playing around with
#45 indicators measuring living standard + climate + political democracy + peace + inclusion + social democracy + freedom + sustainability#obviously this is deeply flawed and you shouldn't take it too seriously

#I also think american exceptionalism and their bizarre cultural one-way street isolation plays a role#i think it's different if you actually see other countries as equals and see that they have female leaders and realise that it's#not going downhill it's not solving everything it's business as usual and it's just another boring fucking politician#and this makes the gender of the candidate LESS (not saying no) issue people obsess about or feel a need to discuss#(e.g. people laying into the appearance of female politicians? certainly misogyny. making jokes about cooking and shoes? definitely too#but I feel like that was more a 'gotta insult these fucking politicians' and gender being one of the targets when people want to do that)#but if you're the US and giant parts of the populace think they're the specialmost extra complicatedest country in this our planetworld#the fact that it works for so many other countries takes a much lower priority#because 'yeah sure a woman can govern a....'checks notes' Fineland and United Kingdom of England or Germanland'#but the US of freedom? we got a red button and what if she's on her period!!?! We are a REAL country!!'#not to mention how deeply entrenched the idea of the US as being CONSTANTLY under attack is and the president as the PROTECTOR#and that protector needs to be daddy of course#i also think the different attitude to leaders plays a role#because a part of misogyny is how much people love to HATE women - to sink their teeth into them and demonise them for every flaw#so any country that has some kind of weird worship of their leaders or sees them as some heroes or extra-class of person*#in my opinion might have a harder time to elect a woman because the moment a woman becomes a candidate#you just have to find the right flaw to go on and on about to make the population absolutely hate her or question her competency#meanwhile the general slack we cut men means they can do whatever but somehow still be compatible with that concept of leadership#(*not just the US ....though a lot of other countries with similar attitudes to their leaders are not standing out as democracies tbh)

There's definitely something about the how the colonialism vibes of both Naboo and Tatooine, and Padme and Anakin when they discuss The Massacre, do all sort of fit together to paint a picture of some sort. (I mean Naboo was quite extraordinary really, they weren't even in contact with the indigenous people.)
and the way that fits with the whole picture of the republic and Padme's role
And it does have me sitting there squinting about how much was intentional commentary occasionally
#because of reasons a lot of my notes have been a mix of Padme love and also Padme revulsion and general tusken discourse#i get it#i get all of it#because i can see she was an actual champion of democracy and the mouthpiece of a lot of the politics and almost the hero of the republic#and so on#and then her flaws. frequently they mirror anakin's. but then they are also............. really good examples of some of the pitfalls of#american liberal politics and stuff#anyway i'm just scolling through notes sometimes and noting strong opinions and feeling generally ambivalent.#and i don't have handy author notes to consult on. how much of that was authorial racism and how much wasn't.#remember that one deleted scene where she talked about her time volunteering. god that was cringey.

"Lucas based SW off of the Vietnam war-"
No, Lucas compared the conduct/strategy of the conflict of the Galactic Civil War (original trilogy) to Vietnam, one side being more numerical than the other who uses guerrilla tactics to even the odds, it's an aesthetic, the conflict(s) of Star Wars are not the Vietnam War, Star Wars is good vs evil, light against darkness, selflessness against selfishness
It's fantasy for crying out loud
#wooloo-writes#wooloo writes#star wars#sw#star wars is fantasy#not some grimdark grey vs grey both sides are just as bad bullshit#george lucas#fantasy#if you want a real life conflict that compares with SW its WWII#the western front anyways#the forces of democracy against the evil of the nazis#although the russo urainian war also makes a good comparison#but vietnam ain't it#lucas liked the imagery of vietnam and put it in sw#he was not saying “us = empire” and “vietcong = rebels”#he was just using the david and goliath nature of the conflict#lucas' own views on the us seem to be “its flawed but can be improved it can be saved and if lost it should be restored”

Hesitatant to scroll Tumblr today because, on the one hand, don't wanna see the Americans whining how the end is nigh (you did it to yourselves, darlings, and you are not even the ones to pay the highest price, people in the position like us, Ukrainians, are), but on the other, I think I've curated my follow list so much that I only have fellow Ukrainians, Eastern Europeans and a couple of other lovely people with very reasonable political opinions left.
#to be clear I'm not actually blaming those who voted democrats#I do have aome sympathy#but also pls have some perspective you're not the ones who's gonna have even more missiles flying at their head as a result of the election#you're not the ones facing genocide#you're relatively physically safe your country is still a flawed messed up but a democracy#which means you can still change things and try doing what's right#fatalism is cowardice

I have so many half-formed ideas of ways to raise political awareness, it's kind of painful. But because my executive dysfunction keeps jumping from idea to idea, most of the time the most productive I get is writing an answer to something here on tumblr. Which is driven only by feeling inspired. And inspiration is great, but waiting for it to happen to get things done is not a reliable strategy.
I am genuinely scared of where the US is heading. Where the world is heading, honestly. I get a whole lot of the disenfranchisement in the system. Money sure seems to speak louder than public opinion.
But the biggest shitstains wouldn't gerrymander so much, wouldn't purge voter rolls, wouldn't keep putting up barriers in the way of voting if they weren't afraid of what an engaged electorate could do to them.
Please don't abandon democracy. I know some people keep whispering in your ear about a Glorious Revolution, where we chop the heads off people like Bezos and Musk. But there is little to no glory in violence. Once you endorse it, it tends to lead directly to Might Makes Right. Which leads to people like Robespierre, Mao, or Stalin taking over, once they convince you that all the other leaders are not True Believers in the Ideals of the Glorious Revolution.
The other alternative is to consider political action as a kind of union. Learn to vote in solidarity with others. Even if you're disappointed in the current state of affairs, picking every single candidate who is open to the idea of voting reform would take you like, a few hours to research.
Because here's the thing: if the US would just double down on democracy, the GOP might never win a single election again. The Democrats want that, because then they don't have to stretch so much to be an umbrella. The Democrats would love a more representational system, because they are primarily a centrist party, whose politicians would still do just fine in a different system.
Like. Get rid of the electoral college, enact ranked choice voting, and maybe do something about those unincorporated US territories. Maybe build a system where a multitude of parties can exist, rather than just two at a time.
And please, get some more recall mechanisms in place. If a government can't agree on a budget, everyone in said government should be kicked out and have to recampaign on how they would fucking solve the budget issues.
But like... unionization is up. More and more people are getting why that's a great idea. Now consider that a democracy is the closest societal equivalent of a union. Sometimes, you hold your nose and vote out of solidarity with the people with the most to lose if you don't do something. Collective action could push election reform onto the agenda.
Meanwhile, not participating in the system just allows more legitimacy to the people who want violence.
#us politics#engaged democracy#rambling about this again#I know I've said it before#just...#democracy is flawed but it's the best system we've come up with#please don't ignore#please vote#voting matters

this is fucking insane??? how are you gonna mock people who recognize that Hamas is a fucking terrorist organization, then acknowledge that the hostages exist (a very low bar that so many ppl fail to meet) while also claiming that calling for the hostages to be returned is a bad thing???
#and the way i can't say anything when this person says things that are explicitly xenophobic and/or antisemitic#bc they're the server owner#and i don't wanna get kicked bc there's other ppl (not this person) who i legitimately enjoy interacting with?#also israel literally *is* the only full democracy in the middle east#(cyprus has a slightly higher freedom index score than israel but it's generally considered part of europe even though it's geographically#in the middle east)#the economist democracy index considers israel to be a “flawed democracy” rather than a “full democracy”#but it's only 0.2 pts away from being a “full democracy” based on the 2023 results#the vast majority of other MENA countries are rated as being “authoritarian”#the EDI doesn't have tunisia as a democracy but some other indices consider it to be one#although that's irrelevant if we're only talking about the ME since tunisia is in north africa#she also uses the term “iof” so i honestly don't give a shit about her opinions as a non-muslim or arab goyische white european @ this point

And on another note despite what I’m focusing on I do think it’s abhorrent to assume everyone who voted for or supported Harris is chill with genocide like yeah that’s like. What blew up online that tori maya shit was stupid as fuck but due to the disorganization and lateness of this campaign there was REAL misinformation being spread especially to our elders by ppl misconstruing info and a large number of ppl genuinely RIGHT NOW believe she’s pro Palestine called for a ceasefire etc. Like that’s a big chunk of the issue happening rn - where ppl literally made up policies for her or suddenly fell for “neutral” talking points bc it’s on someone they like and spread that. Like idk I feel like until everyone can be honest and humble nobody’s getting anywhere
#I lost my point at the end damn#guess I’m just bringing it to ppls attention#ig Im very against ‘this chunk of ppl are exactly like this’ which is why I overly specify#guys if I’m talking about someone I promise I just say exactly what i mean#when I say ppl who voted with XYZ in mind that’s exactly who I’m talking about there’s no strays to be caught#anyways I’m thinking of this bc I’m seeing so many ppl saying vile things about Palestine and saying ‘well this is what you wanted’#like no and that attitude is part of what lost that election bfr#this is what I meant yesterday by terrible timing#bc black women are rightfully exhausted and saying we’re not showing up for everyone else.#and it’s just masking a complicity in a genocide some of you already has#Some of you ALREADY said fuck Palestine so pretending it’s bc Harris lost is so#like I’m sorry this is still about that tori girl#not even her the fanbase she curated#of ppl who genuinely think democracy would save us Harris had our best interests at heart and that genocide is smth to breeze over#and that Maya girl is a weirdo too don’t get me wrong#like it’s that thing where they’re both dead wrong but one person was a biiit more wrong than the other#that didn’t make the other person right at alll#And that Madeline person#I unfollowed bc despite what they were saying#some of which I agreed with#a lot of the FANS got racist fast#guys deleting comments is an option stop letting ur fans be bigots and pretending you can’t control it#y know it’s follow the leader delete the first signs of racism and they can’t fuel eachother hello#anyways that’s a collection of thoughts on ppl ig my point is.#genocide is bad and the way ppl react to that along with other circumstances and factors is never gonna be palatable#especially to ppl calling a politican auntie and BIG SIS GENERAL#fucking crazy btw that last one#and also a lot of ppl were desperate to see a black woman take care of everything so they ignored any flaw she and her campaign had#when these flaws were huge contributors to the loss#and also. with the big ass gap atp I think it is kind of useless to argue amongst ourselves

People who say populism isnt true democracy and demagogues arent true democracy sound a lot like the people saying communist dictatorships aren't true communism.
It's literally the criticism Socrates had of democracy in Plato's Republic. That it would devolve into a demagogue taking power because he says sweet nothings into the ears of the people. Either you can accept that as a flaw of democracy and move on or not.
#democracy#populism#socrates#plato's republic#you can like democracy and admit its flawed#but at least acknowledge the flaws#stop pretending its perfect#no this post does not advocate for dictatorships either.#demagogue

The USA is dead - Trump killed the Constitution and democracy (Essay)
D. Trump is surrounded by six people. Then Trump shoots, killing three people. - This is a Tumblr image from about three months ago, but it has become a reality. The six Republican Supreme Court justices, including the three who Trump forced into the court, foolishly issued an outrageous precedent that "acts while in office will not be held criminal." It is judicial suicide to pander to Trump and issue such a stupid precedent.
This is tantamount to saying that "the president is free from the law and can do whatever he wants with impunity." It guarantees a king above the law, and the USA could become a dictatorial state like North Korea. "Assassinating political opponents," "performing a coup," "taking a bribe and being pardoned"... anything goes, says the Democratic Supreme Court justice.
Are there any stupid precedents like this? The USA is getting worse. Trump said about this precedent: "The Constitution and democracy were protected." - The opposite! "The Constitution and democracy were killed." The presidential system of the USA is flawed, to begin with. This makes it even more incomplete.

Political side of Tumblr: In the God-forbid event that Trump wins in 2024 (which he can legally attempt even if he's in prison at the time) do you think he'll pardon these dregs or forget about them?
Any other candidate from any party, no matter what they say in their campaign speeches, will let them ferment because they undermined the political system that they've invested their adult lives learning to navigate. Pence? They literally tried to kill him. DeSantis, Haley, Scott, or Hutchinson? They'll rot in jail. Christie? He's been clear--they're traitors. The Jan 6 riotors' only hope is that Trump wins and feels like it serves his image or ego to cut them loose and wriggles free of his handlers long enough to actually do it.
#traitors#January 6 riots#january 6#proud boys#democracy#peaceful transfers of power#but nooooooooo#the US whatever its other flaws has always had peaceful transfers of power#UNTIL THESE %&!$s#Donald Trump#2024 presidential election#Republicans#original posts

has anybody noticed lately that like. right wing people are increasingly opposed to the idea that the US is a democracy... like someone will refer to the US as a democracy and they'll respond with "um actually we're a constitutional republic" (which does not preclude the US from also being a democracy...) but is it just like an obsession with being more right or feeling more informed than leftists and liberals ? or is democracy just not cool anymore
