Summary: You and Joel get caught in a blizzard while traveling. Cooped up in a cabin that is a bit of a fixer upper, the two of you learn how to grow with one another. In the process of waiting out the blizzard, you both have no choice but to accept each other, flaws and all. And maybe, just maybe find more in each other than just a travel partner.

Warnings: early!outbreak Joel, (if that’s even a thing on here? I’m sure it is somewhere), set in the early 2000s a couple years into the outbreak. So Joel still has his dark chocolate baby girl hair (I love his salt and pepper, its the main reason why I chose it for the cover, but for the story its younger Joel). kind of an AU story honestly. Will just be writing for the fun of it and posting when I can. Hi, Korean American anon here so I'm familiar with shipping culture in South Korea (though I don't think what I'm about to say is exclusive to South Korean culture)

I'm catching up but OP is very right about the strange contradiction and it's usually that some shippers feel safe shipping m/m relationships because at heart, they don't believe that their idols can be homosexual/bisexual. Their idols are perfect and, in their opinion, anything outside of heterosexuality is flawed and abnormal...so it's a low risk form of denial over the fact that they might have to one day deal with seeing their faves in a hetero relationship.

So shipping them with a male or group member is a safer way of exploring that fantasy romantic side of their idol, seeing how cute they can be, what they'd look like as their boyfriend etc without any of the risk of having to face their idol being in a real relationship (which according to them is a hetero one) because their homophobia (concious or subconcious) won't allow them to really consider the possibility that their fave might be gay or bi and they also know that companies and artists themselves might be less willing to expose same sex relationships.

So TLDR; it's a low risk deniability and form of mental escapism from facing the reality that they nightshade to watch their idol go through a relationship.

Now in Korea, its the same thing but with a little bit of an added element to it....because fans know that Korean entertainment companies and artists are far more indulgent than western counterparts when it comes to pleasong fans and delivering what they want and protecting them from having to acknowledge that their idols are human beings with their own lives. So with Korean idols and fans, there's also an element of control.

They know that if they ship group members or idols together, companies will often jump on it and use it to foster the parasocial element that is heightend and more greatly exploited in KPOP. That means idols and companies will go to far greater lengths to hide their real relationships and so fans won't have to be exposed to something they don't want to see or acknowledge.

They can make their faves dance to the beat of their drum by shipping them with each other because they genuinely don't believe anything will ever come of it

And the fact is that these fans would react the same way if their idol dated opposite or sex---because shipping them with the same sex is their way of essentially shipping them with nobody (if that makes sense)

Now obviously, I 'ship' Tàekook or I wouldn't be here but it's the fact that Hybe not only haven't exploited their biggest ship for fan engagement and fan interaction but seem to have gone to lengths to cover it that makes me more suspicious as to the reality of it.

But ultimately, homophobics shipping their m/m faves is really just them trying to exert whatever control they can while also holding a belief that they'll never have to face the reality of their ship coming to life.

One of the reason's why I always found the explanation of less Taekook focus from BH being because Tae and Jk weren't close anymore such nonsense, is because it makes no sense from a business perspective. BH could literally make them do content together because people enjoyed it so much. Taekook is the biggest ship, has been for years.. and yet they make none to little use of it.

I've read people (the other side) say Tae and Jk are less interesting to watch... freaking bs.. which is basically proven by AYS where all Jm and Jk do is just eat and talk about how much they love to eat. Tae and Jk are also hilarious, cute, and comforting together. I grant everyone that an AYS from Jk and Tae would gather the same attention as AYS from Jk and Jm.

I'm behind on the babylon 5 rewatch but I just finished Believers. this is a great Franklin episode - he's only been introduced recently and the viewer prior to this episode doesn't have a great handle on his personality. from this episode we learn that he 1) has fantastic bedside manner: he goes to great lengths to be comforting and reassuring to the dying kid despite the parents making it really difficult (the gloppit egg bit is very cute), you get the sense that he really is passionate about helping people, and 2) his main character flaw is hubris: in a world where the existence of souls has been all-but-confirmed, how arrogant is it to really think you know better than someone else about their own bodies even though they are from a species/culture you're not familiar with at all?

when I first watched this episode in high school I 100% sided with Franklin and thought that the alien parents were so stupid. when I watched it again a few years after college (but pre-pandemic) I really sided more with the parents and thought it was not Franklin's place to use his authority to force his point of view on them against their wishes.

jms has a quote on the lurker's guide that I thought was interesting about how this situation is like the opposite of having an injured human who is "brain dead" but still has a soul in a living body. if an alien doctor wanted to operate on a human and insisted that it would be totally fine (even if the human's brain would be damaged) because the body and the soul would be unaffected, other humans would be horrified. it's absolutely within the range of possibility in this universe that there is a quality that the aliens have and can detect in each other that humans are oblivious to, and that quality would have been affected by the surgery.

on the other hand of course, watching this in a post anti-vaxxer world obviously felt different and you can't help but think of all the real life human kids in the exact same situation with parents who deny them necessary medical intervention, and in real life the ethics of that are much less ambiguous

I liked the tie-in at the very end of the A and B plots, with Ivanova's comment that sometimes a desperate gamble pays off (and Garibaldi's counter that sometimes it doesn't). I kind of feel like it leaves the viewer with the idea that there's nothing you can do other than just what you think is right, but you also just have to know that it's not always going to work out. it's too bad the B plot prevented us from hearing Ivanova's take on the situation, which I'm sure would have been spicy.

My (not so long) Appreciation Post for Jean Kirstein!

(Sorry friend, but this definitely includes spoilers so you can’t read it)

When I first started watching AOT I didn’t really thought much of Jean, but once I started reading the latest chapters of the manga at the time (and because of JM pics) he began to grow on me.

He’s started off as an insecure kid who wanted nothing to do with the titans and just live his own life quietly. The Military Police was his only option in his mind and only entered the cadets to become qualified to join (Eren calls him out on this for not wanting to use these skills to fight)

I’m smug and I know it ;)

All of that changed once his hometown of Trost was invaded. He and the other cadets were forced to jump into battle against the titans and he was scared out of his mind.

He may have led the charge to the Armoury, and aided to take out the titans roaming there, but he still didn’t felt cut out to be a leader type - until a certain someone close to him shares inspiring words of how being weak makes him relatable and easier for others to look up to. Words from a boy who believed in his potential from the start.

This lead to his traumatising reaction when he found Marco’s corpse after the battle. Someone who believed in him is now long dead, and Jean felt horrible to see his body burn away with other poor souls who lost their lives to the titans.

Jean didn’t wanna leave Marco’s memory in vain, so he decided to give up on his selfish goal and do the right thing by joining the Scout Regiment - still scared as hell even during the ceremony.

The night he watched his soulmate burn.

Throughout the series, we see him grow even more into a admired character by the others, Armin and Eren respect him a lot and even Levi and Hange to a degree. And I will say this: he’s the only character I feel wasn’t completely ruined in S4.

He’s now a lot more confident in his position and is titled commanding officer, with still rough flaws, but at least smart enough to know that Eren was planning something when ‘lying’ to Armin and Mikasa. He keeps everyone on the right track to fight against titans and the yeagerists, as with good leadership qualities should.

Not just in the looks department.

Surely he was almost tricked by Floch to give everything up once more, but he’s grown pass that with still holding onto the memory of Marco. During the final battle, he was the one who nearly finished off Eren by blowing off his head. As much as I didn’t like Connie this season, he still acknowledged that all of them made it through thanks to Jean.

Now with being an ambassador, he’s still taking lead to change the world alongside Armin and the others. In conclusion, he’s one of the most human characters in this series - I can see why he was Isayama’s favourite for a time.

Happy Birthday again to the majestic stallion.

And since he has written it on papers he can right now file a case against the guy and demand his money the next day if he wants. So they handed the ultimate Jason AU to your arch enemy JM Dematteis. Thoughts?

DeMatteis isn't my arch enemy! JLI is one of my favorite comics of all time. Admittedly I haven't loved anything I've read that he's done solo, but I wouldn't put him anywhere near the enemies list when there are so many other writers out there who deserve the spots more.

That said, he's certainly not a writer I expect to do anything particularly interesting with Robin Lives. I fully expect it to play out with the usual message of "Jason's death was his own fault," with a bonus message of "some kind of tragedy was always inevitable due to his personality flaws (teenage, poor)." The first issue added insult to injury by spending practically no time on Jason, because DeMatteis, like almost every other writer, seems to think both Joker and Bruce are more interesting. (Why is Joker even still in this story?)

To be fair, I think it would be a hard story for any writer! Because at least if you're writing about Jason's inevitable tragic fall, that lets you fill up six issues of story. If you instead decide to write "Jason recovers mentally and physically and continues to be Robin" or even "Jason decides crimefighting is not for him and gets to work on his college applications," that's potentially a good story for AO3, but it doesn't really fill up six issues of punching, which is what DC wants to publish. (And they're not wrong for wanting to publish that! They publish action stories about superheroes, it's literally their whole mandate.) I'm not saying those are the only three directions the story could go in, but they're the major ones, and they all come with difficulties. I'm not sure what writer I would trust with it. Kelly Thompson, maybe? I'd at least look at Chip Zdarsky's pitch but would probably have some edits.

So yeah, I don't expect to love how this comic turns out, but I'm also not planning to put DeMatteis on my shit list for it, because I just kind of never expected much from it in the first place? SHRUG.

(I have larger thoughts about how DC has kind of written themselves into a hole with Jason and now he's stuck in this limbo that's unsatisfying to everyone which is why so many Jason fans are mad all the time, but that's for another ask.)

(I ALSO have thoughts about last year's Robin Lives! one-shot, and by thoughts I mean a deeply skeptical conspiracy theory that there was ever any real possibility Jason would live back in 1988, but that's also for another ask.)

Hate all their popular ships get a half mark because I do actually quite like 99% of all Jonships. It's just that the 1% I hate includes J//mart. Which is the only truly "popular" one. (Look JE is pretty big but it has a fraction of the fics jm has).

Some of it is projection but he's just soooooo transgender to me <3. Usually I default to trans man or nb transmasc (a lot of its projection lmao) but transfem Jon and andorgynous nb Jon are also so good. Like there is not a single trans reading of Jon that wouldn't make perfect sense to me. I will see I have a special weakness to it/its using nb Jon.

Ok I know he's the main character and the most popular character but he can never have too much attention. I can never see too much of him. He's sooooo special to me <3<3<3<3<3<3

ugh that last ask was def in bad faith. been a tkker since 2015, fandom isn't a monolith and there's a lot of "narratives" out there, but tk have always been close and spent a ton of time together. the strangeness is that closeness used to be more obvious in official content and then when bts shot to even higher popularity instead of capitalizing on such a popular unit (jk and tae both had huge fanbases individually), BH seemed to pair them with other members. this is just as likely to further BH's OT7 stance (members rarely getting individual promos, no official solo/unit content other than free mixtapes, etc.) than to "hide" tk (also based on some stuff on X about jm akgaes in BH staff doing shady things, potentially other reasons that, again, have nothing to do with hiding tk). but tk have continued to be obviously close the entire time as long as you were paying attention (the way they talk/know things about each other, how they interact in unscripted content/bg shots, the off-screen hangouts, etc.) the joke about not being for the cameras started about them hoarding selcas instead of posting them and jk allegedly making a comment like that during a fansign event, so it just became a popular saying in the fandom. maybe newer tkkers took it too seriously but idts. if non-tkkers are only just noticing how close they are, how is that our problem?? guarantee zero tkkers are surprised by them spending time together, they just have more free time now to get papped, more access to social media other than a shared twt account, lack of official content during hiatus making non-tkkers pay attention to tk shenanigans, etc.

It's even more obvious in the follow-up essay that it was a bad faith attempt to educate me and other Taekookers while trying and failing to disguise it as an opening for genuine discussion. I've only seen a few of these in my inbox, but I've seen many of this type on Tumblr. Like I said, I do believe the "drought" is overexaggerated but it is true that after 2016 there was a noticeable change. Maybe it seems worse than it is to some because the company has gone all in on Jikook content. Before anyone comes for me over that, the travel show seals the deal once and for all on that issue. They are the most promoted as a duo. That's a fact, whatever you think that might say about them. But there's still plenty of Taekook in official content. I've said previously editing around them is a pretty common sense protective measure, and I'm absolutely fine with it. But they're not going to just cut them out entirely. Like you said, there are reasons for always putting them with a third member in photoshoots that would have nothing to do with hiding a relationship. Some. like previous anon, think that Taekook in solo era doesn't square with Taekook before solo era. Not because the circumstances changed or because their perceptions did, they seem to think Taekook changed. It's funny that chapter 1 and chapter 2 align just fine with what I believe about them, and that is the case for most Taekookers I know...but we're the ones whose thinking is flawed. They can't make sense of it. It makes perfect sense to me.

Just reminded me of why I muted the word selca on Twitter, like I did with "subunit". 😂 Yeah. some things get run into the ground and it still happens a lot. We'll see some really sweet Taekook interaction and people will start screaming about a selca, and I do think it's a joke for a some it's just so played out at this point. I wasn't really referring to the fansign story when I said their relationship still isn't for cameras, I meant it literally as a relationship not meant/conducted for cameras. Their private outings that Jkkrs try to say aren't private because sometimes they have friends along and don't know the many definitions of private that apply to their personal time, that's not for the cameras.

Oh they're trying to make it our problem. 😂 I am genuinely surprised by the amount of non-Taekookers I've seen actually acknowledge that Taekook are obviously the closest through solo era and be positive about it, but I still think the vast majority do not pay attention.

Chapter 2

It had gotten even colder.

From the moment you woke up you could see your own breath. You had sleept in a hurdled baby postition in your sleeping bag to keep yourself warm. And you weren’t sure how the hell Joel stayed up any longer with how cold it got.

He was no where to be found in the office when you got up or in the station itself. The front door was open, with the old piece of wood lodged in between so the door wouldn’t close all the way. You zipped your jacket all the way up to your neck before going out.

Yesterday you could see the gravel road, the snow barely leaving any color melting as soon as it had fallen in certain area. But now when you walked outside. There was about an inch of snow covering the floor.

The dirt from your boot causes the soft snow to turn brown with every step you take. The wind causes your cheek to flush as you look around to find Joel.

“Joel?” You call out. You get no reply but the wind.

Did he leave you in the middle of the night while you slept? Maybe he thought it would soften the blow to make you think he was actually going to take you yesterday and then leave without a trace.

You turn to walk to the side of the station to see a makeshift fire. The fire was low, down to almost embers. But it was proof of life, proof that Joel could still be here. Or that he left not too long ago.

“Mornin’.” The sound of his voice causes you to turn at the sudden sound. Joel was wearing his green jacket, zipped all the way like you had. One of his hands holding a gas jug.

A wave of relief sets in your bones as you let out a huge breath. You nod at his obvious statement. “It snowed.” You say back to him.

Joel nods, turning back briefly to look at the trees that were dusted with white. “It started about an hour or so after you fell asleep. I’m surprised that its only this much.” He walks past you to the dead fire and kneeled down.

“I didn’t sleep long. Managed to siphon enough gas for about a day or two. Here’s hopin’ anyway.”

You walk closer to the fire. Despite it nearly being gone, you can feel the small warmth against your lower legs.

You were slowly noticing that Joel really wasn’t much of a sleeper. If he did, it wasn’t much. During those nights before you got to the station. More times than not Joel kept watch in the middle of the night.

At first you thought it was out of chivalry. Which you quickly decided against with how the world has become and how quickly you’ve seen a lot men become even more vile than before this all happened.

You also thought it could be because of your hand. It hurt like a bitch in the beginning. Couldn’t do much of anything with your dominant hand practically split open and bleeding.

But on the third night before you found this place. You told Joel that you wanted to take the first watch. Your plan was to take the first watch and then the rest of it and not wake him up at all. Give him a full night sleep as a “thank you for keeping watch every night and for literally saving my fucking life.” But not even one hour in and you could hear Joel grumble in his sleep and wake up with a low gasp. Like he had a nightmare of some sort.

He got up and told you that’d he’d take watch for the rest of the night. With how straight forward he was and from the tone of his voice. You knew it wasn’t up for discussion. And if this was before, before the clickers and the raiders and the infected that crawled through every crevice. You would’ve put up more of a fight. Demanded him to sleep or whatever stubborn sentence you would say.

But hell, it was a chance at more sleep and at least you tried . It was the thought that counted. And who were you to ask or check on him about it? You didn’t want to pry.

“Which car are we using?” You ask, crouching down closer to the dead fire, trying to get as much warmth as you could from its dying flames. “There’s a truck about a minute or two down the road. I didn’t wantna drive it up here just in case but it still works, just needs a wire start. When we’re done here, we’ll head down there.” He tells you.

You almost tell him that you want to go now, but you think it might be best to give the station another comb over just in case you missed anything.

“I’m going to go back inside and see if there’s anything useful that we missed getting yesterday.” With that, you stand up to head back inside to gather your things and do your final sweep.

“Wait.” You hear Joel say. Turning your head towards the man that was walking towards you.

“It’s not soup but it’s warm.” He says to you.

He hands you a cup filled with coffee. Hot coffee.

Your eyes light up, eyebrows nearly raise up to your hairline. Suprised he found this and even had the thought to give it to you. You look up from the steaming cup to Joel who looks hesitant in his actions. He gives you a small nod of your head. Almost as if he’s asking you to take it. Telling you it’s okay.

Maybe you’re digging into it too much. But you feel like it’s an olive branch to becoming travel partners. Remembering the small conversation, the only conversation, you had last night with him. And a warm coffee the next day. If you close your eyes, it almost feels like the two of you are going on a trip. Traveling cross country and stopped to refuel your gas tank and stock up on snacks and caffeine. Not that you’re traveling to survive. Traveling to find shelter away from death and destruction.

You take the cup gently into your hands. The styrofoam cup warms your fingertips and turns them pink. A big contrast from the cold temperature. “How did you even-”you start to ask

“Found a locked cupboard full of those cups and instant coffee packets. It’s not the best type but it’s coffee nonetheless.” He explains with a shrug and a very small smile as he stares at the cup.

It takes you a while before you say anything. Simply holding the warm cup in your hands. Staring at the steam swirl up in to the air and disappear into the wind. The strong aroma that you hadn’t smelled in a long time. Coffee not even being a thought in your mind. You look up to him, grateful.

“Thank you.”you say thoughtfully

Joel doesn’t make it much of a moment as you do, he simply nods his head and heads back over to the fire. Making sure it’s put out and no ember can cause any amount of smoke. You go into the station to gather your things and check it one more time before you trek.

Joel was right, it wasn’t the best coffee you ever had. But it sure was good. It was warm, and exactly what you needed. The nutty bitter taste of gas station coffee that brought you back to a simpler time.

Your bags were packed and so was Joel’s. Coffee in hand you made one last sweep of the gas station. You were able to find a couple bottles of water, toilet paper, granola bars, and a couple more of the Yahoo cans of milk.

You walk over to the passenger seat and get inside. You throw your bag and the new items you got from the station in the backseat. Joel is outside, filling up the gas tank with a bit more gas before the two of you get on your way.

You look around the truck. You didn’t know much about vehicles, never was interested in the first place. But you hoped that the truck would be able to take you both to your destination. The front door opens and Joel sits in the front seat. He bends down the side to grab the wires and start the car. It takes a few tries before the engine sings. The familiar hum of a vehicle, the vibration against your feet makes your heart race.

You feel Joel’s eyes on you, making you look up at him. He looks at you in question, his eyebrows raised, silently asking if you were ready. You give him a nod and a small smile and with your gesture, he shifts into gear and starts driving.

This is very short but I just wanted to post another chapter since it’s been a while and it felt like a good place to end the chapter.

Thoughts on this but it's giving major gaslighting where army chants this to make them feel better and project the solos are bad narrative, like don't get me wrong but I would rather associate myself with pjms instead of army like those jm solos were not joking like they managed to close that big of a gap in a small time and still keeps his music charting with no other support either from the fandom or the company...

I have thoughts on this. I had seen bits of it before but watching it all makes it so much worse. It's garbage.

This person made a whole video to gaslight people into thinking that what happened to Jimin and others is normal. She blames it on the target audience and the type of promotion.

According to her, the only problem that Jimin had was not paying for radio...which is illegal and not something BTS would do. She never talked about the things that happened to Jimin's album like separating the 2 versions of Like Crazy, Hanteo deletions, albums not being shipped on time, etc.

But she did say that Jimin had to have 9 days of promo because Suga needed to enlist...but it took him 6 months?

There is no sabotage, no shady practices, no unfairness, no payola. Just a different intended audience and that's why things didn't work out.

She never focused on the fact that ONE member is receiving much more support than the other six. Jk and Yoongi are probably her biases. They have gotten things served in a golden platter.

She sounds a whole lot like the people who come to my blog to rant about me hating BTS, that I'm a Jk anti, Jimin akgae, etc, and that solos will never win over army and all that purple goodness. Army garbage.

I'm with you. Although I'm not a fan of labels, I have no problem being called a pjm because that is literally a "fan of Jimin". It's what I am. I have no problem doing what pjm fanbases say because it's better than what army is doing.

Solos are not the bad people. Akgaes are. But like I said back when I first opened this blog, the lines have blurred and people can no longer recognize between the two words and use them interchangeably.

If you are a fan of labels, you should remember this: solo =/= akgae.

Solo is a fan who focuses entirely on their bias.

Akgae is a problematic fan who focuses on their bias and HATES everyone else.

There is nothing wrong with focusing on just what you like. Its normal human behavior. The mentality that you have to like everything and everyone is flawed and impossible.

Army keeps painting pjms as the bad people because army has a problem with Jimin. Even here on tumblr, I'm called a solo and akgae because I obviously bias Jimin when there are other accounts that have a very obvious bias and they don't get called out. Because only Jimin biased people are problematic to army.

Army is simply not appreciative of Jimin enough for me. They ignore him. They allow him to be the reason for jokes and disgusting accusations. They sexualize him. They don't stop the hateful poison from tkkrs and other solos. They use him as a cheerleader and accessory. They blame him. They view him as weak and he is only useful to them when fighting other fandoms.

They bully their own member. They rather have anyone else other than Jimin.

Why in the world would any Jimin fan want to associate with them?

Like you said, the moment Jimin fanbases got organized, we started closing the gap. It WILL get done and he WILL get that award.

It won't be because of army. It will be because of pjms, primarily, and other Jimin fans.

But when he gets that award, everyone will be posting pretty Jimin and how proud they are to be his fan.

This fandom is a joke.

Idk why Ive been thinking about this again out of the blue but in a comic landscape where people have for years made comments and talked about the poor treatment of mentally ill characters in comics especially those who as villains, it’s kind of really mind boggling to me that so far in my experience people act as though characters like Ashley Kafka in Spider-man are unambiguously incapable of harm and in Kafka's case praise her for her Good Hearted nature when like

Ashley Kafka is a terrible psychiatrist who usually causes just as much harm as good.

I suppose part of it is that a lot of people immediately just assume any character who’s written as relatively normal and with good intentions in a psychiatric context is always In The Right, especially when all of her patients are canonical bad guys we've seen do harmful acts in the past. How can Kafka be capable of any harm, around all of these confirmed Sickos And Freaks?

Well first of all, Ashley Kafka isn’t real. And she is written foremost by real world people, who often don’t have any sort of good or kind views on mentally ill people. (JM DeMatteis does not respect disabled people. Stop telling me he does.). She’s written to be in the right, but if you were to actually analyse any of her actions, you will see very clearly how much medical malpractice Ashley Kafka actually engages in against basically all of her patients (such as the time she almost gave The Chameleon a full on panic attack because she took them away from their room without knowledge or consent and left them in a dark small area)

Secondly, this is probably an even more controversial opinion, it’s just boring writing. Ashley Kafka is only interesting when actually seen under the lens of a woman in the field of psychiatry who came into this world wanting to do good, but due to her own personal flaws and more importantly the looming dysfunction and harm built into the psychiatrist system that currently exists in society, is unable to actually meaningfully help most of her patients and do any good. There’s nothing compelling writing Ashley Kafka as a generically good person and not as an extension of a dangerous system that doesn’t actually want to help people. (Of course, all of this comes with the caveat that people genuinely care about all mentally ill people, including those with the disorders and behaviour you don’t like.)

May i ask what specifically? I’m team 50/50 when it comes to jikook, could be a thing or could not, I change my mind regularly but overall I always found that the pieces don’t exactly align for me to think 100% they’re a thing. But with AYS i find it really hard to ignore the domestic vibes they give. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what precisely but how they gravitate around each other, the tones they use when they speak, the way they’re always sharing some sort private joke which makes some moments a bit weird to us but they understand each other immediately. I see 0 boundaries between them. I don’t know I’m at loss lol

In general, a lot of these instances have actually happened over time, and they’re really small details that shippers tend to ignore because their narratives outweigh them.

They’re usually things you don’t think twice about, but they matter if you operate under the belief that they’ve been dating for a long time and/or live together. A more recent example on AYS (which isn’t to say it’s the only one) is when JK says he doesn’t really like soft mattresses. For two people who shippers believe have been in a relationship for a while, and would’ve reasonably had to agree on a mattress at some point, that’s one of those no-brainer info you pick up on when you’ve been with your partner for that long.

A lot of the things that JM/JK currently know about each other that people use to confirm Jkk, like JK’s snoring habits, are a bit like lazy shipper fodder to me because they’ve also shared a dorm for 10 years. It’s expected they know specific things about one another, but it’s the other things that they don’t know that doesn’t make a lot of sense—but only IF you think they’ve been in a long-term relationship.

It’s the unequivocal belief that they’ve been together for a long time that doesn’t make sense and shippers’ 100% confidence that what they know is true that makes it fall apart so easily. Another anon said they didn’t think Jkk were dating but could believe they were attracted to each other—that kind of uncertainty allows for far more grace in the flaws of popular narratives, but those types of shippers are pretty rare.

Again, you have to remember that this is REAL PEOPLE we’re talking about. A lot of the reason why I’m so resistant to going full-throttle delusional on them is because it’s ethically gross to me to be so fixated on two guys I don’t know to the point that people are fantasizing about their sex lives together. It’s weird.

I have counter arguments for everything you pointed out, but I’d be here all day. Suffice to say—and this is something I’ve mentioned tons before—a lot of Jkk narratives aren’t exclusive to them at all. I’ve seen some questionable things between JK and JM with other members and, again, if you believe they’re in a relationship, you have to wonder about what it implies about Jkk that they act that way around the others.

What I will say about Jkk that’s always been sort of odd to me (although I’m willing to consider that this is just part and parcel of who they are now) is their sort of role reversal in cultural dynamics. There are clearly moments where JK is acting or playing into his identity as the youngest, and obviously JM is otherwise mature when he isn’t being playful and childish (as TH readily pointed out), but JK looking out for JM happens just a little bit more than I’ve seen it happen with other members.

(Also somewhat agree on boundaries. I said it before, but their boundaries are basically malleable.)

am i building a bit of a reputation around these parts as a jmj sociologist? i'm getting these questions out of my depth, instead of like "jmj real" messages in my inbox 😅 i'd like to preface this by saying that although i'm a feminist, i'm by no means a feminist scholar. i'm a medical student who hasn't read many works from the liberal arts since pre-med haha

well, i'm not exactly sure what you mean by female gaze/desire in jmj. like do they have that for each other? or do you mean how does female gaze/desire apply in how fans interact with jmj content? i think the latter would make more sense, but you can message again to clarify

overall, kpop is an industry that seeks to meet its audience's expectations, for better or for worse. in large part and for much of its history, women in kpop in general have been formed to largely cater to the male gaze. very very unfortunate but the patriarchy permeates every part of existence, so much more the entertainment industry which transforms people into products.

the female gaze as somewhat of a form of protest against the male gaze is not without its flaws. women can also objectify people, after all. like there was this whole big discourse in the kpop world arising from that particular point because of kiof sticky mv. i didn't peruse through much of the discussions about that so i can't really cite what was mentioned there, but it just shows that the female gaze treads a fine line between protest and objectification. personally, if use of the female gaze in any form of media empowers women, presents women as the multifaceted individuals that we are, and promotes our rights, then i'm for it.

female desire is not only a physical, erotic thing, but it's political too. in a society that has long rejected women's rights to anything or has just seen us as objects for the fulfillment of male desire, female desire is a form of protest as well. women can want, can yearn, can take and not only be the ones to provide and give. but it's hard to speak in universal terms, because what women want can infringe on other minorities, representation of female desire in media is limited at best, etc. it's hard to get into a satisfactory discussion on intersectionality here, but suffice to say, there's just a lot to this topic that is way above my pay grade 😅

how these impact fans' perception and engagement with jmj content? ughhh actually it's hard to say because jmj is wlw rps, so a more accurate critique of the topic necessarily involves queer theory, which is an even bigger thing to tackle. again, i can't possibly provide a comprehensive, high-quality discussion of this that would be 100% politically and philosophically accurate and one that would please everybody. but, at least for me, fans are too concerned with binaries when it comes to jmj, more so than with many gg ships i would say (but that's part and parcel of being one of the bigger gg ships i guess). each of them have to be one or the other, and that's it. the peak example of this i think would be thinking only one of them can be masc, the other has to be femme. why can't they be one in one moment, one in the next, or both? why do fans have to impose these labels at all if jmj themselves don't define it for themselves? heteronormativity plagues kpop shipping, and it is so evident with jmj. i'm also as peeved by fans who keep on insisting that jm and mj have this certain gender identity and are thus this specific label and cannot be anything else, as i am peeved by people who insist they're straight. like it's so annoying and repetitive... can we just focus on them as people, why do we have to keep determining what their genderbread person profile is
