many people in fandom don't want to hear it or admit it, but erasing every single political aspect of a story to instead solely focus on shipping two white guys (or, worse, two people you've whitewashed and misgendered into being white guys) is in fact perpetuating the exact kinds of bigotry the story is about fighting against.

Very important edit: Ladd Ehlinger, the creator of the 2007 film that’s free on youtube, is an extremely racist and misogynistic conservative. He made a political ad so blatantly racist and sexist that youtube has literally resstricted it, so that you can’t share the link outside the site. Simply google his name and you will see dozens upon dozens of articles about how bigoted he is.

Please be aware of what kind of person made that movie when you watch it. His bigotry is baked into the movie, and is why he refused to actually do anything with the original political commentary from the book.

You are not a bad person if you already watched the movie and enjoyed it, but you do need to be aware of what kind of person made it and how that affected the movie, and make sure others are warned. He is also here on tumblr with the username filmladd. I highly recommend blocking him.

I'm being incredibly serious right now, never trust anyone who calls themselves a fandom elder and positions themselves as an authority because of it.

There's a reason that term isn't common any more and it's because the people who were calling themselves that almost all turned out to be abusive bigots who just wanted to manipulate children in fandom into doing whatever they said without question. Someone being older than you does not mean you have to listen to them and does not mean you should trust them.

not being the sort of person the book was written to criticize is in fact free. If you're more offended by people criticizing bigotry than you are bigotry itself, you are a bigot. That's how this works. You're upholding bigotry. All you have to do is stop doing that.

Ladd Ehlinger, the creator of the 2007 Flatland film, is so blatantly racist and misogynistic that Republicans had to dissavow him over an ad he made *to help them win an election*.

He thinks that tax money feeding poor school kids with free lunches is the same thing as slavery.

He thinks that if you respect a trans kid's pronouns it means you're a pedophile and should be jailed as a sex criminal

The film itself is ableist, and completely fails to do anything with the progressive politics of the original novel, because Ladd Ehlinger, as one of the exact kinds of people the book was written to condemn, literally cannot condemn the narrator's bigotry without condeming himself.

This is why he wrote the Sphere to be a creepy asshole CEO instead of the Sphere's actual personality, which is kind, patient, respectful of women, and who does their best to course correct the narrator's misogyny in the short ammount of time they have to interact, telling him that as much as he wants to worship 3D beings, they're much more like the Straight Lines he despises than the Circles he worships.

If you are more annoyed by people criticizing and warning people about Ladd Ehlinger's bigotry, and the direct harm you are doing by giving him free advertising, than you are upset by his bigotry in the first place, you're just a bigot. There's no ifs, ands, or buts, you're being racist, misogynistic, transmisic, and ableist.

If you're more offended by people criticizing bigotry than you are the bigotry itself, it's because you're a bigot. Either learn to care about real minorities, or shut up.

Imagine stanning Ladd Ehlinger in 2024 even after you find out that he's so bigoted that even Republicans are embarrassed to be associated with him.

Yeah it's just flat out refusing to actually engage with the story at all, because they literally just want to do the Roving M/M Ship of Fandoms Past.

I would rather these people just make up completely original characters to play with if they're not going to think about any of the morals and lessons of Flatland at all. Most of the story is taken up by political commentary criticizing systems of oppression. These people don't want to engage with any of those ideas at all. Not even in regards to their "shape yaoi". They just want to do the exact same Roving M/M Ship as any other fandom and it's infuriating.

@walks-the-ages has made many posts about this, specifically about the absolute absurdity of the way many people reacted to the movie Nope.

This is why I dread the day a series that I literally will not even mention by name here to help forestall the disaster, ever gets a movie adaptation, because I just know that shipping-obsessed people with no critical thinking skills will bulldoze past all of the horror to just pretend it's all super happy and cutesy and shippy.

Shipping is fine as long as you don't let it get in the way of actually engaging with the story that is being told. And that seems to be what is happening with most of the new people in the Flatland tag. They do not care about any of the politics or what the book has to say, they just want their shitpost shape yaoi and don't care about anything else.

It is insulting. Because this is a book literally advocating for equal rights and decrying systems of oppression, but people are just erasing all of that and just want to make shitposts instead.

When they could be doing that about any other fandom out there whose original book is not so strongly political. There's no reason for them to do it about Flatland if they don't care about the politics.

It's public domain, so you *can* ignore all of the politics and make it only about shipping if you really want to. But why in the absolute hell would you want to do that?

Why would you want to take a story that so strongly advocates for equal rights for women, intersex people, disabled people, people of color, and more, and get rid of all of that, to make it into nothing but shitposts about rich cis white guys?

It's very clear that most of the new people are still basing all of their thoughts of this book on the 2007 film, which erased all of the politics to make it purely about absurdist humor.

Ignoring the politics to make shitposts about shape yaoi is not actually a better reaction to this book than what Ladd Ehlinger, infamously racist and misogynistic conservative, did with the 2007 film when he erased all of the politics to make it purely about absurdist humor. It would be great if people could actually think about that for a second and realize what the problem is with their behavior but I guess that's asking too much. It always is with the kind of people who don't care about a story at all, only how much shipping material they can get out of it.

This is one of the reasons I hate most fandoms. Most Fandom people do not actually care about the story they're supposedly in the fandom for, they just want to ship two white guys and ignore everything else, even when it means ignoring the actual female protagonist, even when it means whitewashing the protagonist and misgendering it and the guy they're shipping it with, even when it means they're woobifying, as you said earlier, a rich white guy who literally advocates for starving slaves to death while they are tortured in elementary schools.

If you are glossing over all of the political themes of the book, and even the most basic characterization of the narrator as a raging bigot because it gets in the way of your shipping, that is in fact you being a bigot. If you take a story that is about fighting for equal rights for everyone and throw all of that away to focus solely on two white guys, that's just bigotry, plain and simple.

yes. A lot of people thankfully have gotten the memo that the creator of those designs is a bigot and have done the right *AND FUN* thing of creating their own designs. But then a lot of them are still using the exact designs from the films, and defending people who do so.

I'm really tired of fandoms always being filled with bigots who don't actually care about the harm they do to real minorities. How can you prioritize fanart for a known Conservative bigot after you find out how horrible of person he is? When the characters are public domain and can look like literally everything?

I understand a lot of people simply do not know that Ladd Ehlinger is a Conservative. That's why I've made so many PSAs about it and made so many of my own original designs for the characters public domain, and why I've been asking people to stop fucking recommending his shitty film.

But so many people are aware and they just don't care. They'll admit it's a bad adaptation but insist it's still a good film and still something they should encourage people to watch. And not even for the purpose of disecting and analysis, they literally just want more people to join the fandom for the bigoted film on purpose.

More people need to make PSAs about the creator of the 2007 film than just me. More people need to push back against the idea that Ladd Ehlinger's designs for the characters are more important than actual real minorities.

The Gravity Falls fandom at least took my post aimed at them and helped spread the word. But not enough people are aware. And part of that is because of so many stans of the movie refuse to drop it even after they find out how horrible of a person the creator is.

If you're reading this post and you care about minorities in real life, stop supporting Ladd Ehlinger by creating fanart for the 2007 Flatland film. You are doing free advertising for him. He makes his money from youtube. He is literally a Conservative. You can google "Ladd Ehlinger" racism. He thinks that all trans people are pedophiles, and that if anyone respects a trans kids' pronouns, that makes them a pedophile too. He thinks Black people are all violent killers who HAVE to be jailed a disproportionate rates to keep white people safe. The actual book Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, and the translation into 2024 English to make it easier to understand, are both completely and utterly free to read literally everywhere.

According to a self-proclaimed ~fandom elder~, if you criticize the bigotry in the 2007 Flatland film by infamously racist and misogynistic conservative Ladd Ehlinger, it means you're actually just a child who knows nothing about Flatland at all and are only here for Gravity Falls. Even if you write out a well thought out and detailed argument. Even if you've never watched a single second of Gravity Falls. It doesn't matter.
