TV SHOW THE QUEENS GAMBIT  COUPLE: BENNY WATTS X READER (Teenagers) RATING: FUN + CUTE
Tumblr media
I think it's fair to say that every kid is weird.
In a strange way we all sort of where, we all are dirt, or talked to imaginary friends, or licked dog biscuits when we were small. And I'm sure every parent at some point has stated at their child doing something stupid and asked themselves, are all kids like this? Or is mine just odd? And honestly, every kid is like this were all strange and stupid and weird that's just people. It's only when we grow and learn more about the world, about standards and expectations, about social rules and regulations of the world outside of our back gardens.
I had always been odd. And I'd been odd for what many would deem an abnormally long time. Most children grow out of being odd and into the perfect ideals of society they lose their childish things and individually in order to 'fit in' or look 'professional and adult' I never did any of those things and looking back I'm so happy I didn't.
I sat on the back of my father's Lincoln premiere on the long blue bench seats. I watched the world going by seeing shops and streets, little houses that were all new to me. But I suppose I have to get my head around it.
My father got a new and prestigious job that he couldn't even dream of turning down. The commute would have been impossible for him and he didn't want to be working away from us so it was decided we packed up our little life in Maine and drove down to new york I wasn't fond of the idea then again anywhere had to be more interesting than Maine. We drove through the madness seeing buildings taller than I had ever seen before this vast labyrinth of skyscrapers and people all while the cars radio plaid 'don't be cruel' by Elvis Presley. I saw the moving truck already parked outside the little tall little house and we parked up
"Here we are little spiders. Home sweet home" he smiled
"This is our house?"
"Yeah, gon on your on the top floor," he told me, I nodded, got my bag climbed out of the car fixing my skirt as I did, I walked the dirty little pavement before climbing the little steps into the house, it seemed fine, not much to shout about. I went up to the top floor where I found a large bedroom with a built-on wardrobe and a small ensuite
"All this is mine?" I asked as my father came up behind me a few moving men in tow with my boxes
"Of course, me and Erica will be just downstairs we thought as your a big girl now you'll be wanting the space," he says "make yourself at home" he smiled kissing my cheek before he headed downstairs, once the movers had given me all the things I began to unpack setting my bed, my vanity, filling the wardrobe with my dresses and shoes finding little places for all my little things.
I woke to my alarm clock ringing, I quickly silenced it, pushing the covers off me and climbing out of bed. I went to the bathroom and had a warm shower even if I had to battle a little with the taps to get it at the temperature I wanted, I brushed my teeth and dries my hair before getting ready for the day, my first day at this new school hopefully it won't be too unlike my old one. But I suppose I won't have to deal with it too long being a junior and all. I picked my little blue flats, my flesh-toned stockings, my little white button-down and my blue pinafore I wasn't sure how new york girls dressed and honestly I wasn't much bothered I put my little blue bow in my hair and headed downstairs
"Aww, there you are, ready for school?" My father asked as he had his toast
"I think" I nodded taking some toast and jam
"I'm sure you shall do perfectly my little spider" he smiled
"Don't you want to put a nice dress or skirt on? Maybe do a little makeup, dear? The first day want to make a good impression" Erica smiled as she brought my father some bacon
"No. Who do I have to impress?" I asked
"That's my girl" he winked at me
"I'm just saying wouldn't hurt to make a good first impression" she says returning to her cooking
"You don't need makeup and a pretty dress to make a good impression, you need that quick wit, good attitude and that clever little head of yours," he says finishing his breakfast "come on I'll drive you for first couple of days," he says
I looked up at the impressive school front, not too sure how to approach this. I went inside and to the front desk where a woman sat barely interested
"Yes?"
"Y/n y/l/n. It's my first day"
"You're here early?"
"My father dropped me off before work"
"Alright," she says she gave me all the paperwork I would need for my classes and such like and she said I could just basically wait for school to start, I nodded holding my things close as I walked the halls, finding my locker, my classrooms trying to map my way around the place when I heard a sound. In the quiet of these empty halls my feet made the only sound but one room made a sound I assumed maybe some class pet or maybe a staff member I went over peaking inside the open door to see a sight I did not expect. It wasn't either of my guesses honestly this wouldn't have been even my fourth or fifth guess.
A boy sat on a small chair tight up again the long desk, he wore the common men's black shoes, rugged slightly dirty looking jeans, a dark grey button-down that he had rolled to his elbows it looked old and far too big for him almost as if it was hand-me-down, three long chains around his neck each at slightly different lengths, his fingers had rings clearly again old and worn, his hair pulled back with a grey beanie hat on to cover his head, his chin had slight fuzz of hair as did the corners of his upper lip, his brown eyes squarely focused on the chessboard Infront of him. He moved so gracefully and yet firmly knowing each movement his fingers playing with the pieces in an almost… elegant way it was sort of memorising to watch his fingers work
"What?" He asks having spotted me in the doorway turning his attention to me fiddling with his signet ring spinning it a little on his finger
"Sorry just.. curious is all" I answered
"I didn't think anyone came in this early?"
"It's my first day"
"Oh. That makes sense, I didn't think I'd seen you before" he says "do you play?" He asks offering me a chair
"No, I don't even know the rules. I'll just watch if that's alright"
"Sure" he shrugs going back to his game once again playing away with himself for what felt like hours and I just kinda happily say there watching him, I'm sure if someone had come in they'd have assumed I was going all dreamy-eyed for this boy but I found him almost irrelevant I just liked watching him play. He finished that game and began packing the board away. "Class soon," he says
"Oh of course" I nodded "I like watching you play"
"Yeah? Next time you're here I'll show you some rules" he says "Benny" he smiled offering his hand
"Y/n" I smiled letting him shake my hand
"Y/n?"
"Yes."
"Alright" he nods "have you seen your homeroom?"
"Sorry?"
"Where you go for sign in? Before first period?"
"Ohhh" I said a little confused looking at my schedule I did have this homeroom before each day and at the end of each day "we didn't have that at my old school"
"It's fine you just register and do homework and stuff, where are you?" He asks, grabbing my schedule out of my hand "Hu. You're in mine come on then I'll walk you over" he says throwing an old moth-eaten duffle bag over his shoulder
"Thank you" I smiled happily following him noticing people start to hustle around the corridors, we arrived at a small classroom with little desks and chairs
"Spare desks in the back corner," he says sitting at the front corner desk
"Thank you for your help"
"Your welcome, might as well give you a hand first day and all"
I was about to speak but a loud bell tolled so I sat at the desk and listened to the insane madness of people rushing around flooding into rooms and seats chattering about everything and nothing until the classroom was filled and the teacher came in
"Morning everyone"
"Morning Mr Harris" many sighed tried and unimpressed
"We don't have an empty chair so I know you're all here. Ohh and uhh we have a new student today, miss y/n y/l/n where are you?"
"Here" I smiled putting my hand up
"Ahh excellent, I'm sure you'll all give her a hand these next few days till she gets acquainted, now you all do your work I've got to see miss smith about these damn textbooks," he says heading off somewhere else I didn't quite know what to do about it all I just sort of sat there as everyone began to chat amongst themselves.
"Hey? New girl?" A voice asked I turned and saw a girl my age, in little white dancing shoes, stockings, a long pink dress with a white cardigan, her hair in tight sculpted rolls, make up perfect a wicked smile on her face
"Yes?" I asked having to turn away from my schedule
"Your clothes don't match," she says
"I'm sorry?" I asked confused
"Your dress, shoes and bow are all a different shade of blue," she says the room got quiet as she spoke
"Yes. They are" I nodded she seemed confused by my answer being visibly taken aback by it
"Excuse me?"
"I said yes. They are."
"Who still wears a bow in their hair anyway, what are you five?" She asks the room now silent everyone looking at me
"I do" I answered
"Well it's childish and makes you look like a baby"
"It keeps my hair out of my eyes" I shrug returning to my schedule
"Your dress is old and ugly," she says clearly trying to get a reaction out of me so I folded my schedule up and turned to her
"I think I understand, this is a hazing, gripping on the new girl as it where"
"You are so weird," she says
"Yes, I am. I'm incredibly weird. And strange. And I rather think that's a spectacular way to be. I'd rather be weird than a husk of a human being sat giving out unsolicited commends and options on others' looks and personalities in order to fill myself with a feeling of self-worth and to show off to my other hollow acquaintances that gather around to gawk and glare like seagulls to an ice cream cone, I'd much rather be strange weird and whatever other synonyms you may think up over the coming hours like days. As I shall take the time you spend getting your cupid's bow to sit just so and hair to nearly place to expand my mind and fill my head with concepts and ideals beyond your understanding. For you see in a few years when these seagulls have had their fill, once the heard of underweight cows you surround yourself with disperse and the little boy flings flutter their ways to the more beautiful birds you'll be left as an empty hollow person as you always were within so many of your things to back you up. And darling, my weirdness may be strange to you but it's mine, my own and your sweet curls and perfect cupid's bow wither and distorts leaving you a dried up mess of yesterday's news that not even the weirdos and freaks you once insulted because they would have long since figured out you were not worth impressing then or now." I explain and the bell for the first period rang "y/n y/l/n pleasure to meet you" I smiled
She squealed in anger grabbing her things and rushing off to class, everyone quickly followed to see the aftermath so I got my things together going to the door and I saw Benny still there with his stuff smirking at me
"Yes?" I asked
"No one has ever done that to betty franklin. He'll I've never seen anyone do that to anyone"
"Anyone?"
"Anyone at all." He says "I like you. You're staying with me" he smirked
I smiled and happily walked with him to my next class.
I returned home from a busy first day noticing my father still at work and Erica out shopping, I grabbed some food and went up to my room noticing the only thing I had yet to unpack I had my dinner and put my hair up unpacking all the cloth and protection around it making sure every small detail of it was as if should be I was so happy it survived the trip okay I grabbed what I was working on before we left Maine sitting on the little stool my feet on the metal frame turning in my little lamp, slowly doing the next seam of my new dress.
I got myself some lunch putting my little tray on the table and putting my books beside me, I saw betty glaring at me from across the canteen I didn't bother even reacting to her, she's not worth it. I began nibbling at my sandwich as I glanced out the window seeing benny sitting outside on the outdoor benches playing chess against a couple of the senior boys I smiled a little sure that I'd go out and watch once I was done with my lunch. I jumped a little as a girl came with her own tray and sat across from me
"Hi"
"Hi?"
"Your y/n aren't you? the new girl? in my mathematics?"
"Ohh yes" I nodded "sorry, Lillian right?"
"yeah," she smiled "How are you finding school so far?"
"It's okay, same as my old one just bigger." I shrug
"Maine it was you were from right?"
"Yeah, bumfuck nowhere"
"How are you finding new york?"
"It's bigger" I shrug returning my view to the window unsure this conversation was really going to go anywhere
"You hang out with him a lot?"
"Humm? Who?"
"Benny?"
"yeah. he interests me"
"Are you two?"
"No." I smiled slightly laughing at the thought of it "I don't think benny even realizes I'm a girl"
"I'm sure he does"
"No. I lack the curvations, divots and shapes that help him differentiate things" I smiled
"I think you do," she says looking at my dress
"I mean. I'm not a chess piece. that's as much as that boy pays attention to. But I like him Not... like that. But I find him interesting. I don't know could say we have the same wavelength"
"You mean your both weirdo's" another voice spoke up and I didn't even need to see it was betty standing there
"Sorry?"
"Your a weird little freak. and so is he. you should get married you'd make weird little babies"
"What precisely makes me and benny weird? to you?"
"Firstly, what the hell sixteen-year-old boy has a beard?"
"one with more testosterone than your boyfriend?" I smirked at her making Lillian giggle but betty shot her a glare which silenced her
"Your clothes. your face. your hair. the genal way you two walk around with untitled self-worth like your shit doesn't stink. just because he earns money out of that little game trick he plays doesn't mean he's worth fuck all. same for you you think just because you're an ugly little brainiac that can turn a hem you think you're better than everyone else!"
"No betty. it's this amazing thing called not giving a shit what someone like you thinks. I don't get dressed, do my hair or do my homework for you! or for your approval. and neither does benny!"
"Defensive of your boyfriend?"
"he's not my boyfriend!"
"weirdo's" she says before marching off with her cattle of back up girls
"You really shouldn't answer back to her like that you know"
"why? If I know one thing in this world lillian. is that bending to the mercy of the betty's of the world is worthless" I said finishing my lunch and going out to the yard to watch the boys play chess.
I hurried my little feet thought the busy new york streets knowing my way to school and back now after so long, hurrying along thought the empty corridors even though I didn't have to I still liked going in early mostly just to watch Benny play chess, it's not like we held alot of interesting conversation or anything half the time when he plays chess I'm not sure he even remembers I'm there but still I like spending the extra time with him especially given he goes away so much I hurried along to the usual room seeing him sat there completely focused on his board so I went in putting my bag by the table and my books on the desk, going to the side for a cup of water as I took a sip I heard a strange noise that made me jump a wolf whistle I turned a little confused maybe some stupid boy was in the doorway playing a joke but the room and hallway was empty but me and benny who sat perfectly focused on his board and the pieces for a moment I believed I must simply have imagined it I noticed as I sipped my drink the little button on my shoe was loose so I bend down and corrected it and as soon as I did I heard that whistle again making me bolt up seeing Benny looking at me his lips still pursed into the shape to whistle he saw I saw him and instantly returned his eyes to the board like he didn't do anything
"Mr watts" I glared
"Your dress looks nice" he shrugs as I came to sit
"Thank you I made it myself" I smiled fixing my dress
"I know, seldom do you wear anything y/n that you didn't make yourself," he says
"True" I smiled grabbing his bennie pulling it off exposing his fluffy less blonde and brown hair
"Y/n!" He whines snatching it back and pulling it back on his head
"You'll have to let me make you something one of these days"
"Eh. Nothing I want" he shrugs
"You two shouldn't keep doing this you know" Mr warren smiled as he came in with his books and his coffee
"You have the chessboard" Benny shrugs
"So you have the Benny" I shrug "he follows it like a bee to flowers"
"Awww that's cute" he smiled "you wanna play?"
"No thank you Mr watts I've been humiliated enough" Mr warren chuckled "I can't even beat miss y/l/n"
"I'm getting good" I smiled
"Your okay" Benny corrected
"Well know ones as good as you" I rolled my eyes
"Should I expect a note about you two once you graduate?" Mr warren asked sipping his coffee
"What?" Benny asked very confusedly I knew what he meant so I just sat quietly a little sheepish "oh. Oh! She's not my girlfriend. Why does everyone always assume that?"
"Because I'm like the only person other than Wexler who you hang around with?"
"A. I don't like people. B. I don't hang around with Wexler he hands around me"
"I'm people"
"I like you y/n. Just not… other people" he says
"Mr Wexler. I thought we had a discussion about this" Headmaster Stevenson said as he arrived at the classroom
"Yes sir. I did say-"
"You two are not meant to be here this early"
"the school and canteen are open" Benny shrugged
"Yes, not the classrooms. I do not want to see you two in here again."
"Fine" Benny sighed putting the board away so I got my stuff and we went out to the corridor
"Miss Y/l/n?"
"yes?" I asked holding my books
"I am once again impressed by your textiles skills but can we keep that to the textiles class"
"How so sir?"
"I thought we already discussed if you want to wear your dresses to school you have to extend the skirt," He told me
"But when I came to class with a floor-length dress you said and I quote it's a hazard"
"Tripping hazard yes. Don't let it happen again" he said giving me a slip about it
"And Mr Watts"
"Yes?" Benny sighed putting his hands in his pocket slightly rolling his eyes
"I know we discussed the jeans"
"yeah?"
"None of your classmates wear them, what you want to wear in your own time is your business Mr watts but here you wear business attire. No jeans." He sighed to give benny a slip too
"Whatever"
"and I thought we discussed at length about hats inside"
"I'm not taking it off."
"Mr watts"
"I'm not taking it off and that's final. give me detention I don't care. it's not happening. not like a need your dumb classes anyway I make more than you do"
"Don't count your chickens Mr watts." He says handing over a detention slip
we sat on the little bench watching people come and go, "When's detention?"
"tomorrow after school. bullshit. I don't know why he's always riding my ass about this stuff"
"Becuase he's a dick, he'd have us all in uniform if the parents wouldn't kick up a fuss about it"
"true. I don't give a shit anyways chess seasons ramping up next month. I'm barely gonna be here"
"I know" I smiled "I miss you."
"Hu?"
"I miss you. when you go away I mean"
"You do?"

Imagine Every Cincinnati Household Moving On The Same Day
Spend a few hours poring over the old city directories and you will quickly conclude that Cincinnatians changed addresses frequently. It is rare to find the same person in the same building from directory to directory. You may be amazed to learn that most of Cincinnati not only moved from year to year, but most households moved on exactly the same day.
From the mid-1850s to the early 1900s, the First of April was known as Moving Day in Cincinnati. Here is the Cincinnati Enquirer [31 March 1866]:
“In spite of the general disagreeableness of the day, there were yesterday, evident signs of the near approach of the First of April, which, we believe, stands, by common consent, in the city calendar, as general ‘moving day.’ Furniture on sidewalks, furniture piled on wagons and in drays, spoke yesterday of time being improved, and the much-dreaded transfer already being made by the advanced line of the great army of ‘movers.’”
And, 65 years later, here is the Enquirer [29 March 1931] again:
“In addition to being All Fools Day, April first for years has been the date of the renters’ annual hegira. In other words, it is ‘moving day.’”
In a city the size of Cincinnati, the logistics of this mass migration on a single day complicated life and frazzled the nerves of the populace. Or, to be honest, half the populace, specifically the feminine half. A multitude of cartoons and humorous squibs attest that the bulk of moving-day drudgery fell on women, while men endeavored to spend a long day at the office, or at the club. In 1879, an Enquirer wag sarcastically bemoaned the travails of the husband on Moving Day:
“Work! Well, I should say so! Git up in the mornin’ before breakfast, sit around till it’s ready, then eat an’ off down town after a wagon. No mortal man ever finds a wagon without hoofin’ round a whole square, an’ jest this kind of work is knockin’ years and years of usefulness out of some of our best young men. Well, after the doggoned wagon is found, you must give the driver your old as well as your new address, and that’s enough to break an ordinary man’s back.”

Why did everyone relocate at the same time? It seems that Cincinnati landlords scheduled all of their leases to expire on March 31. Consequently, all of their tenants knew that a new lease – undoubtedly at a higher rate – would kick in on April 1. But that wasn’t the only reason for domestic wanderlust. According to the Cincinnati Post [1 May 1920]:
“Some families were forced to move because of the expiration of leases. Others succumbed to spring fever and its accompanying desire for new environment.”
Given the heavy demand, Cincinnatians on the move had to take whoever was willing to move them and, because almost all the moves occurred on one day, most men with wagons were far from professionals. April 1 was often the only day each year they moved households. In fact, most of Cincinnati’s movers were teamsters for the breweries or saloons, rag-and-bone men or junk haulers. Consequently, damaged goods were an expected consequence of every move. Some observers estimated that three moves did as much damage to a household as a fire. Most professional moving companies got their start as moving and storage companies. The seasonal storage of household goods kept vehicles and drivers busy in the off-season.
As a growing city, Cincinnati suffered perennial housing shortages, so Moving Day ramped up the competition for available domiciles. Hopeful tenants, the Cincinnati Post [25 February 1920] swarmed moving wagons to ask where the mover’s load had come from, expecting to find a vacant house or apartment waiting.
“Others, masters of strategy, lay in wait at offices of moving concerns, according to John B. Wolke, real estate dealer. Thus they find out who is going to move and get to the house before the moving vans.”
Residents in search of new housing arrangements scanned the newspapers, looking for announcements of promotions or divorces or similar sorts of life changes that resulted in other people moving. Sometimes this reconnaissance was faulty:
“A resident of Walnut Hills sent his carpets out to be cleaned several days ago. A passing flat hunter, seeing the carpets going out, presumed somebody was moving. He rushed to rent the place.”
By the 1930s, the concentration of household moving on one single day was beginning to fade. The Cincinnati Enquirer [29 March 1931 the cost of moving was rising and the market was changing:
“Stabilized rents and the tendency of landlords to more fully cater to the wants of the tenant also will have a lot to do with diminishing the number of movers.”
Beginning in the early Twentieth Century and enduring through the Second World War, many people simultaneously observed May 1 as Moving Day. The First of May was the long-standing annual migration in New York City, so some tenants and landlords took their cue from the East Coast. A Cincinnati Post cartoon from 1909 shows a maladroit mover from the “Smashem Transfer Company” scheduling jobs for May 1. A 1920 item in the Post referred to May 1 as “traditional moving day.”
By 1941, the Enquirer reported that a trend toward staggered leases and efforts to “persuade the public to adopt more sane and sensible moving habits” had led to diminished demand for moving on a single day.
No matter what the day, there was general agreement that moving was a pain. A Post reporter filed a story [16 April 1910] recounting his own adventures on Moving Day that year and concluded:
“Just take a referendum of men who’ve moved in the season now at its height. And rises there a man to say that the transformation of a flat-dweller to a house-dweller, or vice versa, is along a path that’s rosy? Nay, none!”

Sweater Weather Part One
Sweater Weather
Hey everyone here is the next series I’m working on, mostly inspired by how %#$@ hot it has been here in Kansas (And everywhere else, the world is on fire). This story takes place over the course of a weekend (I know, I like weekend worst case scenarios okay? Leave me be), so it’ll probably be 5-6 parts. Hope you like it!
Pairings: Steve Rogers x PottsRelativeFem!Reader
Ratings/Warnings: Hard R
For everything from language, crude jokes, ADULT situations/impure thoughts, booze (because it’s pretty much a staple in my fics at this point.), arguments, and an extremely overprotective Tony Stark. Very little angst, as I try to keep most of my fics light humored. But of course there are some insecurities/unsure feelings, as well as sad feels from everything with endgame/ the decimation. Also dead parents.
Also AU in the fact NO ONE DIED during Endgame/Steve didn’t go back. Also as much as I adore Morgan Stark, she isn’t around yet. I didn’t know where this would fit timeline wise, so just ignore the timeline. Kay? Cool.
Slow(ish) burn. Lots of pining
Words: 3,476
Summary: You’ve just moved to New York after a long 3 year stint travelling the world and helping with various charities, taking a new job with Stark Industries thanks to your cousin Pepper. A trip out to surprise Tony and The Avengers for the weekend turns from good to terrible when the a/c at the compound breaks. How will you beat the heat for the record breaking weekend?
It’s in Y/N Y/L/N format, any pictures, outfits, gifs, and marvel characters just assume I don’t own them. Also no Beta, as I don’t ever have one, so the mistakes and reader are all my own. Also her friend Kate isn’t mine either, she’s based after a very close fantastic friend. Enjoy!
Part one
“You just had to get the apartment on the top floor with an out of order elevator?”
You dropped the last box labeled “Kitchen” haphazardly on the floor, wiping your forehead with the back of your hand as you turned to watch Pepper Potts shut the door behind her comment.
“You were the one who wore heels today, dear cousin. And besides, the movers did most of the work.” You stared pointedly at her, before bringing your eyes to sweep over the piles of boxes that filled your apartment. A sea of cardboard that came with the faint scent of permanent marker and small notes of your truck’s air freshener flooded the small hallway and living room areas. The floors were bare otherwise, you not having any furniture at the present moment. “You should also know the elevator will be fixed this weekend while I’m out at the compound catching up with everyone.”
“Doesn’t help our damn case now though does it?” The redhead complained while looking at her tired feet.
“But did you die though?” You raised an eyebrow, turning back to look down the hall. “I just gotta pack a bag for the weekend and then we can head out. You sure it’s going to be ok? Me going out there and all?”
“Are you kidding me?” Pepper looked confused at your sudden question, shaking her head and grabbing your shoulders. “Tony is going to be so excited to see you! No one has seen you since the wedding! Not to mention these team building weekends never really get anything accomplished.” You giggled as you waded through the boxes to your mostly empty room, shuffling boxes as you looked through ones with “clothes” written hastily across them in doctor worthy handwriting.
“I should change. It’s hot as fuck outside.” You muttered, opting to switch out your gross sweatpants and stained-to-hell white shirt to a pair of short jean shorts and a curve hugging blue tank top. Your mind wandered to everyone you hadn’t seen in so long. Three years. It had been three years since you’d been back, spending that time traveling the globe and helping charities after the decimation. Pepper and Tony always called you, kept you updated. You honestly never believed you’d move back to New York. But things change.
The only reason why you had come back was after the whole Thanos thing six months ago Pepper had offered you a job as a receptionist at Stark Industries, you decided that day it was time to settle down. You made sure everything was good with the charities you had been helping out with before putting permanent plans into action though. Purchasing a small apartment in the heart of New York City, your cousin and you kept everything quiet as to your return. You wanted it to be a surprise, mostly to see Tony’s face. Maybe someone else’s. Shoving a few days worth of clean clothes in a duffel bag, not forgetting your swimsuit as your cousin promised you some sunbathing time, you opened the door to see Pepper grinning widely at you.
“You know blue is Steve’s favorite color right?” You smirked knowingly as you moved to the bathroom, throwing your toiletries into the sack and zipping it shut. Of course you knew. The blonde avenger was one of the only things that had gotten you through these tough last few years. When everything went down with Tony, you had decided not to pick sides, but you and Steve fell apart regardless. It started slowly, the two of you drifting from good friends to mere strangers. It hurt but you understood. It’s not like you were dating, or like he would ever see you as girlfriend material. Not that you would ever turn him down if he had just asked you. He was definitely boyfriend material, and him looking the way he did certainly helped things too. You had always harbored feelings of some kind towards him, even if you weren’t sure what they actually were. When the decimation happened, you knew the whole team had enough on their plates to deal with. So after a couple years and more importantly Pepper and Tony’s wedding you vanished off the map, putting your people skills and nurturing personality to good use. It’s not like anyone missed you terribly.
Shutting off the bathroom lights you lugged the bag over your shoulder, reaching to take a stuffed Panda bear, obviously worn from years of travel, and grabbing your keys and purse.
“Got everything? What’s the bear for?” Pepper asked as you double checked the deadbolt after you had shut the door.
“A girl in England gave it to me after I found her some relatives to live with. She couldn’t have been more than seven at the time, yet she had managed to deal with her parents turning into dust a hell of a lot better than some of the adults I had seen. She said Mister Stuffins was her favorite and that he would be my friend so I wasn’t alone. Sweet girl. She wrote me when she got her parents back. I cried for a week.” You turned the small bear over in your hand and placed in the front pocket of your bag, remembering her strength in such an awful time of her young life.
“What was her name?”
“Evangeline, but she demanded to be called Evan.” You snickered as you recalled her nearly ripping off your partner at the time’s head for calling her by her full name. The spirited small child had almost made you forget about the seven flights of stairs awaiting you. Your face fell flat upon remembering, Pepper shoving your shoulder.
“Come on, I’ll race you.” You gaped as the red head went barreling down the stairs, deciding to give her high heeled ass a head start before you ruined her self esteem. She’s going to hurt herself and I’m going to have to help her dumbass to the truck.
~~The Compound, a few hours later~~
“Jesus Christ Tony watch where the hell you’re pointing that damn thing!”
“That’s what she said.”
Steve rolled his eyes at Bucky, watching the comedy unfold before them. Sam sat on the ground, tinkering with a standing Tony in his iron suit, the latter barely missing the former’s head when his repulsor rays misfired on accident. They had been at this for hours, Sam trying to help the billionaire with fixing something that was wrong with his right leg. Tony continued to bark orders at the man who was only growing more irritated by the minute. To be honest Steve didn’t have the faintest idea what was wrong or how they were planning on putting it right, but he wasn’t the one doing it. So he, Banner, and Barnes all simply stood back to watch.
“We miss anything?” He turned his head slightly to the left at the sound of Natasha’s voice, Thor and her returning from unloading the Quinjet for the weekend.
“Tony missed Sam’s head again, but I think they’re about…”
“DONE! Eat a dick Tin-man.” Sam shouted suddenly, hopping up from his feet and clearing the way for a smug looking Stark, who only looked down at his leg and shook it. He turned to give Sam an iron clad thumbs up, who only flipped him off in return, heading over to join the rest of the group that had gathered on the compound’s grounds.
Since Thanos’ attack, the compound had been rebuilt but wasn’t nearly as massive in size anymore. Only one large building that offered housing, training, mess hall, laboratories and a few holding cells sat next to the pad that held the Quinjet. Tony decided that since the battle had leveled most of the original compound, building something a little more simplistic would be the best course of action. Everyone had agreed with him, and Steve felt like it was little more like home this way. And he’d rather be inside right now than standing outside in this hellish heat wave.
The sun was high in the sky, the temperature only climbing and it was already uncomfortable outside. Steve could feel the beads of sweat forming on the back of his neck, the forecast calling for record breaking highs for the weekend. He wasn’t looking forward to it to say the least, and knowing Tony they would be doing absolutely useless things to pass the time. He would pay for a distraction at this point.
The roaring of a large truck engine forced the super soldier from his thoughts, the impressive vehicle pulling sharply onto the compound parking lot with minimal effort. Dust settled as Steve’s blue eyes caught the familiar sight of Pepper Potts exiting the passenger side, fist pumping the air to loud rock and roll that was blaring out of the windows. Very unlike her.
“Honey uh who’s truck is that?! Are you leaving me!?” Tony coughed as he climbed out of his suit, the large mass of metal’s motor being shut off and the driver door thrown open.
“Of course not sweetheart. You wouldn’t last a day without me.” His confused look had the team chuckling as he kept darting his eyes from Pepper to the vehicle.
“Then who the hell is that?!”
“YOUR SURPRISE!” Tony raised an eyebrow as to why his wife was shouting all of a sudden, clearly not catching on.
On cue you jumped out of the truck, just like you two had discussed on the drive up to the headquarters, beaming at the large group of people.
You’d remember Tony’s elated smile for the rest of your days.
“SHORT STACK?! WHAT THE FUCK?!”
You laughed as the brunette man came sprinting towards you, the nickname ringing in your ears as he picked you up slightly, pulling you into a spine crushing hug and making you drop your bag. In all the years you had known him, Tony had been like the older brother you never had. When Pepper started working for him you were visiting with your parents and the two of you hit it off instantly. After their unexpected death due to a car accident a year later, Stark and Pepper were some of the only ones there for you, you three becoming inseparable. It had killed a part of you to leave after the decimation, but he had reassured you it’s what your parents would have wanted you to do. You blinked back tears as you hugged the man fiercely.
“Hiya Snark. I’ve missed you too.” The two of you broke apart, Tony leaning back to hold you at arm’s length, taking in your well toned and tanned body.
“Look at you! I mean look at you! Was there something in the water overseas?” You smacked his arm as he went to hug you again, his obviously excited demeanor spreading over the others, although there was a small hint of nervousness in the air.
“Move it Stark, she’s got a line.” Nat scolded, pushing the man away from you so she could hug you herself, a girlish giggle leaving you as you returned it.
“Dig the hair Nat, you break my record yet?”
“I gave up three weeks in. Pinball just pisses me off.” She shrugged, reaching to give your shoulder a squeeze. Thor threatened to break you in half as he embraced you, Bruce choosing to shake your hand. You decided that the new version of the doctor would take some getting used to, but at least he was wearing shirts now. Your eyes met the uncertain ones of who you assumed had to be Bucky, Steve’s friend. So they brought you home after all huh?
“You must be Barnes. It’s nice to finally meet you. I’m Y/N.  Roger’s talked you up a lot.” He took your outstretched hand firmly, giving you a small smile and nodding.
“Did he now? Funny he never mentioned how he let your gorgeous face slip through his fingers.”
Your jaw went slack as you stared at the man, eyes widened in shock as he shamelessly raked his eyes over your figure. Sam took the chance to rush you, your breath escaping your lungs as he all but tackled you. Everyone laughed as Pepper went to grab your overstuffed duffel off the ground.
“Y/N I’m so happy to see you! It’s been years!”
“I know Sam, I’m sorry I stayed away for so long, just had to think of the bigger picture for awhile.”
“Please Y/N. You were helping people, kids with finding family, rebuilding businesses and houses. Even running soup kitchens for Christ’s sake. Don’t apologize.” He met your bewildered expression with a sincere smile. “Pepper kept us updated. You really didn’t think we would miss you?”
“I had to think of…”
“The bigger picture. We know.” You wanted to remove Sam’s smile off his perfect face when a certain tall blonde walked into your sights. He looked nothing short of amazing, even after these last few years. His hair was swept back into its usual style, his blue jeans and simple t shirt combo making you light headed and he got closer to you. Steve Rogers looked damn good. But you had always thought that.
“You got a hug for me too Doll? Or are you all out?” Your breath hitched at hearing his deep voice, his challenging tone making your heart race.
“Not sure Rogers, why dontcha come over here and find out?” You challenged back, his eyes glittering in amusement as he moved to wrap you in his arms. It never came though.
The large explosion off the side of the main building of the compound caused everyone to jump, panic taking over your senses as Tony reassured you no one was inside.
“That’s good to know Snark but what the fuck was that?!” Your nickname for the man only made him smile before he went speed walking off to go investigate, the rest of you following suit. The blown line of a/c compressors sizzled and popped angrily at you as you got close, Steve darting an arm out protectively in front of you. You let your eyes drink the sight of his large limb, the muscle groups flexing deliciously against the material of his shirt. Tony didn’t look amused.
“What the hell is your arm going to do Cap? You protecting Y/N or flexing your freakish flesh for her?” Tony snapped, the captain lowering his arm guiltily. Rolling your eyes at your cousin’s overprotective nature you stepped forward to take a gander at the busted machinery, the sparks and smoke rising from the group of metal. Tony ran his hand over his face with a sigh.
“Looks like I get to track down some new compressors. Y/N, come with me.” Stark commanded, your face looking to his in confusion as he began to head back towards the main doors.
“Me? Why me?” You asked, not understanding the clearly cranky male’s logic. He scoffed.
“You’re better at people than I am. And I don’t like how Rogers keeps staring at your ass.”
A blush rose to your cheeks, not even sparing the embarrassed blonde a glance as you hurried to catch up with the angry brunette. You could feel Steve’s heated gaze on your back as the two of you walked away, Tony turning around to shake his head at the soldier.
“You better put your eyes elsewhere before I knock them out of your skull soldier!” You contained the giggle that bubbled in the back of your throat as you heard Steve groan, the rest of the team looking on at the two of you and sharing curious expressions.
Later
“Yes I will let him know, thank you so much!” You hung up the phone with a defeated sigh, tossing it to Stark as you paced the living area of the compound. The sun had started to make its way towards the horizon, and after five phone calls you were finally gaining traction on your current mission.
“How many does that make?” Tony questioned, repositioning his sunglasses on top of his head like a suburban soccer mom and scribbling something down on a small note pad.
“That makes the six we need. Six compressors, three deliveries, two electricians to set it up come Monday. I’m sorry but that’s the soonest I could get them here.” You slouched onto the couch next to him, the billionaire lovingly patting your leg. You let your head rest on his shoulder, thinking about how F.R.I.D.A.Y had said earlier you had about 12 hours before the outside temperature would start to affect the building. That was about an hour ago.
“So much for a team building weekend, we should let the others know. I wish there was a way to punch hot weather in the face.” You muttered aimlessly as Tony continued to crunch numbers. His head shot up at you suddenly, a wide smile covering his tanned face.
“That’s it! Short stack you are a genius!”
“You’re welcome?” You nearly fell over on the couch as Tony leapt to his feet, offering you a hand before pulling you out of the living area and down the hall into the kitchens where the rest of the Avengers remained.
“You guys Y/N figured out how we still make this weekend work!”
“Oh yea? Does it include leaving this place until Monday and getting some actual sleep?” Came Nat’s sleepy reply, Bruce pouring her another cup of coffee.
“No! We’re going to work together to beat the heat!”
“Y/N I highly doubt this was your idea.” You shook your head at Sam, clearly you and Tony had completely different ideas on how you all were to spend the weekend. “And Tony it’s supposed to reach nearly a hundred and ten! Why the hell would we willingly be stuck here, with no a/c for essentially two days, in a hundred and ten degree heat?!”
“Because whoever is still here at the end of the weekend doesn’t have to come back for the next four months of team building.” Came your cousin’s response, everyone looking at Pepper with a look of admiration, well everyone except Tony.
“Alright I’m in.” Nat agreed, slamming her coffee mug down, Bruce giving his confirmation alongside Thor. Bucky looked warily at his teammates before sighing, nodding his head curtly in submission. Sam and Steve also agreed reluctantly, not really having a choice in the matter.
“What about Y/N? She’s not part of the team and she shouldn’t have to be stuck here with us!” Sam directed everyone’s attention to you, a small lump forming in your throat as you realized they were absolutely right. So how would you spin this to where they’d let you stay without thinking you were crazy? Chewing your bottom lip in thought, you didn’t miss Steve’s eyes darting from your eyes to your lips repeatedly, a darkened expression on his face before Bucky managed to lightly nudge him, motioning to Tony who was watching him like a hawk.
“I don’t have anything else to do. I don’t start work until Monday and I kind of wanted to catch up with all of you,” You smiled to all of them, Bucky looking extremely pleased with your answer as Stark raised a finger.
“Question. Where are you working and how come I wasn’t made aware that you’re staying here indefinitely?!”
“Don’t worry Snark I won’t be far, I just moved into my apartment over the last few days and I…”
“Last few days!?” Your cousin in law threw his hands up, “When did you decide you would be moving back?”
“Uh…five months ago?” The noise that emitted from Stark’s mouth couldn’t have been English, his eyes narrowing at his wife who only smiled brightly at her husband in kind. She was within good reason to feel accomplished, usually secrets never stayed silent when Tony went snooping.
“Well I for one am all for Y/N staying. We’ll need all the estrogen we can find to deal with you lot this weekend.” Nat chided, coming to stand next to you and patting you on the shoulder.
“Great it’s settled then.” Pepper smiled warmly at you, rounding the island in the kitchen and going to pull out supplies for a meal big enough for a small army. “Now who’s helping me cook dinner tonight?”
A rousing chorus of “Not it!” was heard as Tony took off running in the opposite direction, Steve and Bucky following suit. Within moments you found yourself alone with your red headed relative, the rest of the team becoming scarce to avoid having to cook or prepare.
“I didn’t want them to help anyway. This kitchen would end up looking like the compressors outside.” The two of you laughed as you turned on some light music and got to work. It felt nice to be back.
