Bee is not one of the rogues himself, but two of his sons are! Also one of Butterfly's sons, and two of Coal's sons that he had after Fiercestripe left. They aren't really important to the story so they don't get names or anything, but I think that it makes everything a little bit more tragic that Fierce is fighting her nephews who she would have loved to watch grow up and might recognize her from when they were young.

2. Kingfur and Sockeyepelt would both be pretty devastated if Chumtail dies, she's similar to Dashpaw in that she's kinda the mediator between her two more polarized siblings. Really everyone who's up on the chopping block is the most stable of their family, meaning everyone is going to be very NORMAL after this, I'm sure. Also thank you!

3. Yes! There will be stickers of the mediator kids (especially now that you've asked). I'm drawing sketches based on what people have requested, and I'll make a post letting everyone know when they go up. Currently I have Weed, Siltsplash, the Mediator Kids, and some couple stickers in the works.

There were many factors in Fiercestripe's decision. 1. Thorn was 4 moons old by the time Fiercestripe left, so she was well past carrying size (especially with Fiercestripe being a small cat). Even if Wildfirecry could carry her, or she walked on her own, it would slow their pace significantly and require them to take more breaks, leading to the farm cats likely catching them. 2. If Fiercestripe had taken Thorn then the farm cats would have more justification to track them down and forcefully bring them back. It's one thing for a she-cat to leave, it's another for a she-cat to take her mate's kit with her. (part of why the farm cats have made it to loudclan now is because they're chasing a pregnant she-cat). 3. Wildfirecry hadn't agreed for Fiercestripe to come with him. He was a stranger who had stayed a couple nights with the farm cats and was just as likely to turn her away or harm her as he was to allow her to come with him. He would have been a lot less likely to agree to travel with her if she came with the responsibility of a kitten. 4. Wildfirecry and Fiercestripe did not have an easy journey. They didn't have a destination or a set path, they just wandered from place to place for years until they were convinced to join Loudclan. It's pretty likely that had Thorn been brought with them she would have frozen, starved, drowned or been eaten by a predator given that Wildfirecry was the only one with any hunting or fighting skill, and kittens aren't as tough as grown cats. All in all, bringing Thorn along wasn't really an option. Fiercestripe's only choices were leave Thorn or stay with the farm cats and hope that another outsider came along later when Thorn was grown. (Thorn's story is a bit different, Frost and Spider were outsiders who joined the farm cats later in life, so Frost knew how to hunt and fight, thus allowing them to wait for their kits to grow before they left.)

I designed them on my own! I find pretend genetics very fun and it gives me a chance to think more in depth about the rough backstories I have for these characters and how their childhood would have affected the way that we see them act in the story.

How to read the Lord El-Melloi II Case Files Light Novels

I was recently reminded that there is a lot of people who simply don’t know that they can read the Case Files light novels, and that there are people who do know but have no idea where to find them. This is especially a problem when these people have only watched the anime and want to know where they can find more of the story. Since it kind of requires you to go through some hoops (not a whole lot but still), I decided to take a page out of @humbertozero​‘s excellent Fate/strange Fake resource post and make one for my other favorite Type-Moon Fate spinoff, the dossiers of El-Melon.

Anime

The anime adaptation of Case Files, with the mouthful of a title that is Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files: Rail Zeppelin Grace Note, is particular to use as an entry-point in the series, because it only partially adapts the series. See, the author, Makoto Sanda, said in interview that the two first arcs/cases in the series didn’t quite work as scripts for anime episodes, so the anime only adapted the third case/arc, Rail Zeppelin, which is more action oriented than the more mystery focused first arcs. But because they still needed to explain stuff like Gray, Reines, El-Melloi’s students, etc., many of whom are relevant characters to the arc, the first half/six episodes of the anime is about introducing them.

So to the question “where do I start reading after the anime?”, the answer is unironically to restart at volume 1. And then you may skip volumes 4-5 since they are the Rail Zeppelin arc and there are not much differences besides some characters not being present during that arc. This is why I think you can watch the anime first if that’s more your speed (I have my problems and criticisms of the anime but that’s irrelevant to this post).

And you can’t start with the anime and start reading with volume 6, the first 3 volumes have characters and plot points that come back for the final arc, so you’re gonna be incredibly lost if you think to consume the series this way.

Weirdly enough, despite being original episodes, the anime originals are most likely canon in some ways. Episode 0, the original OVA, is an expansion of an anecdote Gray mentions in the first volume’s prologue, and Episode 1 takes place during Waver’s travels before the story starts and is an actual story, one of the 3 incidents Sanda has in mind for Waver’s journey before he returned to London. Episodes 2 to 6 take place during the one month period between volume 3 and volume 4, and finally the special OVA take place on Christmas also in between arcs.

Manga

The manga’s translation used to be on hiatus for a long time, but it has fortunately been picked up by the team doing the UBW and HF mangas. As of the time of writing (14/10/24), it has been translated up to the Rail Zeppelin arc, meaning if LNs aren’t your thing, you can experience the first two arcs that weren’t adapted in the anime in manga form. It has really gorgeous art so definitely check it out.

The Adventures of El-Melloi II

The sequel series currently ongoing, started a year after the first Case Files ended in 2019. You might know it as “the (other) series where Rin shows up grown up and also a pirate” and, as of recent volumes, “that one series where Shirou comes back spending the entire time half-naked”. @reignsan has been compiling pretty thorough chapter-by-chapter summaries of the volumes by @kaibutsushidousha if you don’t mind being spoiled. Or you can be patient and wait for azwhoisverybored to finish translating them on Beast Lair in this thread.

Lord El-Melloi II Case Files material

This is absolutely not required reading in any shape or form, those lore books are usually of interest only to dumb nerds like me lol. A timeline of the Clock Tower? An explanation of its politics? Yes please. But it also has insights into the characters by the author that aren’t in the books proper, as well as behind-the-scenes explanations for some decisions (for example, why it’s Gray with the American spelling instead of Grey with the British spelling). Only the glossary/encyclopedia is translated, but give it a look...after you read the series, because it assumes you did and has some big spoilers.

The morning rush eventually quietened down and Remus came out from behind his counter to join them for a well-earned coffee.

“Lovely to see you again, Regulus,” Remus beamed at him. 

“It’s lovely to see you again too, Remus,” Regulus returned, equally smiley.

“You look exceptionally clean if you don’t mind me saying,” Remus said, trying to keep a straight face. That’s when James cottoned on that their conversation was aimed at winding Sirius up. It seemed Regulus bought out that side of Remus. 

“Oh, yes, the shower at my friend’s flat is outstanding, with plenty of room and perfect pressure. James and I could have had twice as many shower partners in with us and still had room.” Regulus and Remus kept peeking out of the corners of their eyes to see how insane Sirius was getting.

“Really? Sounds like a very well-thought-out space. I may join you next time if it really is that spacious.” Sirius’s left eye began to twitch. James looked around the café and realised that the majority of the seated customers were either listening to their conversation or watching Sirius’s face get steadily redder. An exploding Sirius wasn’t a new concept to their regulars. He had quite a following on TicTok, not that he knew about it. Some of his clientele filmed him when he went off on one and posted them on th site.  James was their number one fan. He spotted a squat man trying to sneakily film the conversation. Judging by the phone case that had a cartoon rat on it, this was the infamous Wormtail. He filmed and shared a lot of videos of people shouting and Sirius was his favourite muse.

“Evan and Barty would love that. But just a warning, they are looking for a third,” That was the final straw, Sirius blew up.

“Twice! Twice you’ve been in here. I haven’t seen you for five years. You come back and the first thing you do is steal my best friend, and now you’re trying to set my boyfriend up?! Nope, you can go straight back to that house of horrors you call home!” Sirius raged across the café. Regulus froze. He ducked his head and whispered. 

“No,” It was just like earlier when James had mentioned Grimmauld Place. 

“Hey, Sirius, stop, yeah,” James put his hand up, trying to get Sirius to leave him alone. 

“No, he can’t just come here and upset everything then go back to Mumsie and Dadsies as if nothing happened.” Sirius stomped across the room. Remus looked at Regulus’s reaction and tried to stop Sirius himself. 

“Hey, sweetheart, let’s stop, yeah. James and Regulus are going now anyway.” Remus stood up and tried to herd Sirius back into the kitchen. James grabbed Regulus’s hand and forced the tense man to his feet. 

“Yeah, go on then, baby brother, go on home to your precious mummy and daddy.” Sirius sneered at him. Regulus turned back to look at Sirius, tears in his eyes. 

“I can't, they kicked me out,” Regulus choked. James couldn’t believe he’d missed that. How had he not realised? They’d seen each other every day. But Regulus never spoke about his parents, unlike James, who could talk about his wonderful parents until the cows came home. Sirius walked purposefully across the small space, all anger and annoyance forgotten. He wrapped Regulus in a hug the second he was close enough and held him tightly. 

“I’m so sorry, Reggie,” He murmured. Regulus stood still with a shocked expression covering his face. Eventually, he relaxed into the hug and held his brother close. “There's a flat upstairs, above the café. It’s yours if you want it,” Sirius told him. Regulus pulled his head back. 

“Really? You’d do that for me?” He snuffled and wiped away the tear-lines from his face. “Even if I take James up there to shag,” A halfhearted smile tugged at the corner of his lips. 

“Had to spoil this beautiful moment, didn’t you?” Sirius barked out a laugh and ruffled Regulus’s hair. He pulled a set of keys out of his pocket and took one off. “Here,” He said, handing the key over. “Do not make me regret this,” He warned. 

James, ever the gentleman, scooped Regulus up into his arms bridal style.

“Come on, love. I want to hear more about this shagging. Sounds fun,” The customers in the shop clapped and cheered them off as James carried Regulus through to the back and up the little staircase to the flat above. 

“I’m already regretting this!” Sirius shouted after them. But they both chose to ignore him and get acquainted with Regulus’s new home.
