Today we celebrate dancer, choreographer and teacher Pilar López Júlvez (4/6/1912, San Sebastián – 25/3/2008, Madrid).

The younger sister of Encarnación López Júlvez (1898-1945), known as La Argentinita “Pilar López… was the last representative of the golden age of flamenco ballet in the 1930s and 1940s. She was considered a fine, serious classical dancer, but it was as a choreographer and teacher of young dancers that she excelled.” (Full article theguardian.com)

Incredible guitar from Jose Ruiz Pedregossa - it sounds as good as it looks and is an extraordinary guitar through and through! Pedregossa's heavily decorated guitars are perhaps most immediately recognizable by their bold construction details and overall unique style. His excellent training in carpentry and furniture making was not lost on Pedregossa's guitars, just look at the elaborate woodwork on the bridge and headstock. Even the ebony inlay on the back of the neck is a hand-carved pattern. The sound of this guitar is powerful, thick and dark - as elegant and majestic as its appearance. In principio l’Abanico (il ventaglio del flamenco e soprattutto del ballo delle Sevillanas) era utilizzato sia dalle ballerine che dai ballerini di flamenco. Oggi invece esclusivamente usato dalle donne, rappresenta l’essenza della sensualità femminile sotto ogni suo tipo di utilizzo durante il ballo coreografico del flamenco. E’ un accessorio fondamentale di questa meravigliosa danza gitana e che mai e poi mai potrà mancare all’interno del suo ballo, così come gli altri accessori fondamentali del flamenco come le nacchere, le gonne e lo scialle. Il ventaglio nel flamenco possiede di per sé una particolare ma molto rilevante storia, caratterizzata specialmente dal suo linguaggio nascosto e segreto, che identificava le donne nelle epoche più antiche e le rendeva libere di comunicare persino messaggi attraverso i movimenti di questo prezioso oggetto! Il ventaglio perciò non si limita a rappresentare solamente un oggetto con una storia folklorica di rilievo, ma è anche da considerarsi come un vero e proprio simbolo di difesa delle donne di un tempo… … Se un giorno decideste di acquistare un bel ventaglio, consigliamo espressamente di organizzare un bel viaggetto a Siviglia, è proprio questa la città capitale della migliore produzione artigianale del ventaglio Abanico originale spagnolo. Se inoltre siete ballerine/i di flamenco esperti o apprendisti sappiate che se ancora non avete avuto a che fare con il ventaglio, molto presto lo farete ed il risultato di questo approccio, sarà quello di apprendere tutte le fantastiche posture e la magica gestualità dell’Abanico all’interno del folklorico mondo della cultura gitana del Flamenco! . . Indie 5-0 with Gary Meyers

Gary Meyers is the flamenco guitarist who’s making a name for himself with  fans of world music and guitar enthusiasts. He’s in demand right now, performing at various restaurants, corporate events, private parties, weddings, and so much more. While he’s not from Andalusia or grow up immersed within the culture, he intuitively taps into the Spanish spirit to perform this storied traditional music with reverence and dazzling virtuosity.

He just released his album Desperado’s Shade, his flamenco album with 10 original compositions with the spirit of Andalusia. We got a chance to speak with Gary about his album in this edition of Indie 5-0. Let’s dive in:

You just released your flamenco and world music album Desperado's Shade. Which song on the album is your favorite?  

“Old Ways”

Which song on the album was the hardest to write and record? Which was the easiest?  

I’d say “Dancer’s Moon” was the hardest because it was originally around 7 minutes long and took some work to rearrange.  All songs were 3 takes or less.   “Spanish River” was by far the easiest.

What was the inspiration for Desperado's Shade, if any?  

After completing my cruise ship contract as a solo gypsy flamenco guitarist, I immersed myself into Spanish rumba which led me to writing the album, Desperado’s Shade. You can feel inspiration from the beaches of the Mediterranean with a umbrella drink in hand.  

How do you approach writing music?  

Typically with harmony/progression, then build melodies to get the right “guitar voice,” then improvise over until I get a framework that feels right, avoiding the standard pop song writing process and rules….
