Based on what I've read and heard about the state of Southern Thedas by the end of Veilguard, it seems that Starkhaven is one of, if not the last bulwark against the Blight spreading further north, and that the Free Marches are being unified under a single banner to stand against it - the implication being that Sebastian is at the head of those efforts.

I was wondering what your thoughts are on regarding that, and how you think he (and Marian of course) would deal with this kind of situation?

He’s probably leading strategy meetings, sending messages out to the other heads of state to see how things are progressing, maybe even helping to train a militia made of volunteers. I don’t see him taking the field too often, given that he’s one of the last decent leaders the South has left at this point and shouldn’t be risking his life. But he does fight the darkspawn when he can. Maybe shoots arrows on horseback.

Marian, meanwhile, is helping the refugees (she’s a spirit healer so she spends a lot of time in medical tents). She also oversees efforts to get food, clothing, and shelter to the people who need it most. She’s not the easiest person to deal with on a good day but Starkhaven is the home she chose for herself so she will do whatever it goddamn needs her to do.

I have it in my world state that Marian and Sebastian have three kids by this time — their eldest, the twins Dominic and Davinia, and little baby Dorothy who was born maybe a year before the events of Veilguard start. So in addition to fighting off the Blight to end all Blights, they have the added stress of keeping their children safe.

He wasn't out there waiting for very long when he spotted Quinn. There was a small spike of anxiety when he did; not because of who or what he was, just general social anxiety and wondering whether or not he was mistaking identity.

A wild thing to worry considering the man's dress. He didn't mean to stereotype but like, of course that man is a vampire. Handsome and well dressed in dark colors in period clothing. That or he was LARPing.

His worrying washed away as he was addressed and he smiled in return, partly out of a sense of relief. "Yes! Quinn, right? It's a pleasure to meet you as well."

"Thanks for coming out with me tonight. I've heard about the place we're going but haven't been there myself yet, so this'll be a fun little adventure for us both. Follow me, it's not far." With that he walked up the street and rounded the corner.

"Have you ever been to a speakeasy?" Luke asked curiously as he walked past a weed dispensary to a nondescript weathered black door at the side of the building. There was no name attached, nothing that would signal the space a place of business.

It had taken a bit of thinking, but Luke was positive that he'd found the right place. Quinn had said he wanted to go somewhere on the more quiet side of things, which was not normally an easy thing to accommodate when it came to going out for cocktails.

Luke stood outside of a touristy bar in Hollywood, it's outside brightly colored and lively. 33 Taps was where he'd said to meet, but this wasn't to be their destination.

He looked a bit out of place in contrast to the city around him. Normally he'd wear something floral, but his short conversation with the older vampire had made him sentimental and he chose to adorn his black tunic with embroidered blue flames that glittered in light- and in dark. His pants were simple and plainly black. On one wrist was a band of gold alloy, intimately detailed with beautiful Norse reminiscent knot work and runes. It kept him safe once, he wasn't sure if it would a second time if needed.

He hoped he wouldn't need it to. The faw creature was anxious as he waited. The was his first time really meeting one of...a former enemy. In neutral space, at least. Out of combat, with the intent on social interaction. Could he trust Quinn? He seemed alright, but that's how they get you.

His head began to swim with thoughts of the Wyrm and he started to doubt if this was smart for him to do until he let out a huff. 'I'm not garou anymore. Not my circus, not my monkeys.'

Jack Howl

We all know Jack is a surprising romantic, he’s probably just as affectionate and sickeningly sweet as you, just in a quieter, more subdued and private way. So he isn’t actually embarrassed over the affection per se.

It’s more like, he has a tough guy image, so could you maybe keep that to when you’re not between other Savanaclaw students? ...at least for a while, before he realizes he shouldn’t be acting like that about the one he’s chosen to be with.

So after a period of shyness, he ends up being a full on enabler. Everyone knows both of you as that disgustingly lovey dovey couple, even as Jack acts much more reserved than you do. He’s still letting you hang off his arm and go on about how much you love him, after all.

Idia Shroud

So endlessly embarrassed. And yet it’s possibly one of the reasons why he was so drawn to you, being so openly affectionate and bright, Idia feels like he’ll go blind if he looks at you for too long.

He just has mixed feelings on the whole thing... if you’re spouting poetic rambles about his hair being oh so beautiful and how much you love him and couldn’t live without him while you’re somewhere like the Ignihyde lounge, he’ll tell you to stop, flushing red everywhere.

If it’s just the two of you, though? He doesn’t want you to shut up ever. Still calls you an embarrassing sap, but has his face buried on your chest, and complains if you stop talking too. He’s affection starved, that’s all.

Jamil Viper

It catches him by surprise the first time, he jumps and his face gets hot, stumbling over his replies. But after that, it just registers that this is the sort of person you are, and, well, Jamil loves you for yourself.

He just lets it happen, trying to stay as straight faced as possible while you’re going on your rants. It comes to the point where you’ll finish an impromptu sonnet about him and he’ll just go “That’s great, I love you too, have you eaten already?” before offering to get you both snacks.

He does like it, though. If you’re in private he’ll be more open about that appreciation, smiling and thanking you and sometimes even getting flustered by your remarks. It’s not his own way of showing affection, but he feels loved, and he’s grateful you are the way you are.

😭ok so,,, i often have really bad cases of second male lead syndrome because they tend to be nicer and more genuine in say. manhwas and just romance stories in general :’))) for example, baek inho from cheese in the trap, he was flawed, brash, had anger issues, came from an abusive household along with his sibling, had to work a lot of jobs to get by, he thought he didn’t deserve to be with main character because he saw himself as a bad person when he really wasn’t! he was always trying so hard!!! at least that’s how i saw it 😭he worried a lot about mc. he stood by and protected her multiple times, he threw hands at her stalker more than once and gave her a self defense kit when he wasn’t there because they couldn’t call the police without enough evidence yet- they were friends and he never tried to interfere when she got in a relationship with ml, because he thought ml would care about her. he was also so emotional bc he truly had gone through a lot, i couldn’t help but root for him. 😔he won’t back to therapy to get back to using his hand and playing his instrument. i think, he was working hard on bettering himself and getting back on his feet!! but with male leads, i can’t really get attached that often? this male lead, i couldn’t get used to him because he was cold and calculating (like a lot of male leads, successful, handsome, rich and kind at least at first glance etc etc) and he turned out to be manipulative and did a lot of bad things that he doesnt tell to mc, for example, the stalker mc had after her was thanks to the male lead who initially hated her because she saw through his facade (the same way he hates inho too because of something similar) and at least in the drama he doesn’t actually change his behavior. he even says they should forget about it?? and move on?

also like a lot of male leads he was very possessive and got angry when mc became friends with baek inho and he put an *ugly* ugly face and went as far as telling her not to be close to him etc (in contrast inho just told mc to be careful around ml because he’s not what he seems, i couldn’t read that far but i’m sure that his injury was somehow caused by ml), also i noticed that a lot of romances have that [they hate each other but fall in love] kind of plot which is ok if it’s handled well (sometimes it becomes toxic tbhh) and it’s very common nowadays and the male leads are always SO rude?? and if not rude, they’re cold but then it’s seen as romantic when they are possessive or something. but this ml was def on another level because at one point he even talked in a threatening way to mc (you can see this more clearly in the korean dialogue)before he liked her (he began liking her after he thought they were both the same) and she even took break from school for a year because of him 😮‍💨i couldn’t really finish the manhwa and i still feel bad, but the ml just made me uncomfortable and i couldn’t see inho baek in pain 😔

i wonder why second male leads sometimes are more logical and people root for them!! well at least in the cheese in the trap fandom, after the drama there was so much support for baek inho, there’s even multiple articles ab it⚰️😭 is it that they’re not possessive and even if it hurts they want to see the person they love happy even if it’s not with them? or maybe they are more friendly and open or sentimental? also they’re often more… raw? um, often flawed and def not perfect but not in the toxic and kinda terrifying way that some male leads tend to be? (and sometimes their behavior gets romanticized too which is another problem) why do the sml have to end up being sweethearts! kyo from fruits basket is a very good male lead, he gives me those vibes because he’s got so much shit thrown at him. he gets discriminated, is looked down upon, is cursed, is violent but is truly just… a child you know? and well, i always really liked the best friends to lovers trope more than the enemies to lovers for some reason 🧎it happened in the drama start up too i ended up rooting for the second male lead with my friend 😭they were so disappointed when he lost so much in the end. so unfair tbh. perhaps it’s wanting to see someone who thinks they’re unworthy of love be loved? or finally be chosen when they’re used to being hurt or left behind etc etc. is it that we empathize with them because they’re more flawed? maybe we relate ahahaha— maybe that’s why we root so much for yeonggi 😔😔😔 he kind of gave me *the* vibes too even when i know he’s a protagonist :((( and even tho ily stopped being specifically focused in romance some time ago

and he’s got the characteristics 😭😔 he cares deeply about shinae and his friends, yet he doesn’t want her to get hurt so he takes care of her from far away, he distances himself because he’s in denial of his feelings and thinks he’s not worth the effort and he doesn’t deserve her affection or anyone’s friendship, self sabotages, is abused by the hirahara family, has a backstory of possibly having been violent during his childhood, has a punching bag at home and has recently been sentenced to prison??? low self esteem and trauma? losing his mother? asking and crying as we speak bestie 😭</3 he’s so respectful towards shinae, hell, standing up for her and throwing hands?? and ahhh consent!!! consent is so important he’s just. idk. he tries so hard. he’s such a good main character he surpassed my expectations of a main character a thousand times over ahh! he’s not a second male lead and yet he’s so good- he is by far one of the most complex characters i’ve ever met, and he just feels familiar and genuine :( i just hope our boy will be happy and healthy in the end- i’m begging because he deserves everything good!!!

Yeong-gi very much gives "misunderstood, 'bad', rival love interest with a heart of gold" vibes. In fact! I think that may have been what was going on with the love triangle we presumed or were primed to think of at first!

I guess people viewed Kousuke similarly to usual main love interests — cold, mean, but secretly sweet once there's development (hopefully, bc as you've mentioned, there've been so many erk iterations). It's interesting thinking of it like that because it seemed so obvious to me that Yeong-gi was the best boy? I rmr watching AkiDearest's video on it wayy back and she said the same thing lmao.

I get where early YooTip stans were coming from though. I'm currently reading Pride and Prejudice which features Mr. Darcy (mayhaps one of the original cold male love interests), and it's too early for me to say, but I'm pretty sure he's legit (ppl rlly love P&P after all).

As for Cheese in the Trap, although I haven't read or watched it, I totally understand where you're coming from and what you mean. I actually recently watched the majority of a K-Drama on Netflix called "Boys Over Flowers" (2009). I later learned it was actually a huge deal when it came out.

And OH MY GOD I was lured in by that older drama style (and their hairstyles lmao) and that's exactly what you get! IT HAS ALL THE TROPES. ALL OF THEM. (the love triangle, the actually legally bad ml, flagrant overuse of SA as a plot device, etc.)

It features the "F4", an elitist group of 4 teenagers at an elitist rich kid school. And the show opens on a kid getting a "red card" in his locker from them, which results in him being tormented relentlessly by the school and by the end of the first five mins he literally attempts to take his own life by jumping off a school building.

Kang Jan-di, the main character, happens to save him, makes a bunch of headlines, and she's awarded free entry into the school despite being broke.

The F4, end up being main characters of the show obviously, and two of them, Yoon Ji-hoo (right) and Gu Jun-pyo (centre) are the main love interests.

Ji-hoo is a violinist (he's sweet) and he, like the other two F4 members, is just a bystander to the real head of F4 who insists on making kids' lives hell, Jun-pyo.

At first Ji-hoo seems to be the leading interest, then Jun-pyo starts getting hyped. And it's weird because all of a sudden Jan-di has to choose between them and the romance with Ji-hoo is explained away as, "idk, ig they're not rlly feeling it rn" (he also had a unrequited crush a while back on his adopted family member who is described to be his "first love, girlfriend and mother" pls 😭)

So Jun-pyo ends up being the main love interest for the majority of the series. Even though he cards Jan-di at the beginning and it incites other kids to try and assault her. Ji-hoo is so sweet and unproblematic in contrast TT (he's also autistic, but the way they mention it is possibly problematic too depending on their thought process 😭😭)

Something happens, and Jun-pyo has to break up with the MC, and I didn't end up finishing it so I'm not sure whether they get back together.

But for episodes, you watch them get closer and enter a relationship and you're stuck wondering, "Do they not remember how he almost led a kid to die? Or an attempted assault on Jan-di?" Yeah he didn't do it directly, but HE CAUSED it. He KNOWS what happens when he cards people.

It's addressed a little later, but the brother of the kid who almost died ends up trying to get back at Jun-pyo, but he does so by threatening Jan-di's life???? Like he wouldn't be grateful to the person who saved him??? The writing screams, "oh this guy's actually evil, he wants to hurt good people, and that's why he's not justified so don't think too hard about Jun-pyo's past actions please and thank you."

- Jan-di is a swimmer, but apparently she's worse at it then the boys so when they have a competition it's really close because she's slow... or one time she's swimming but there's rocks at the bottom so she starts to drown? because she can't stand up straight? and she needs to be saved by the boys

- She's in the middle of Europe and about to get violently mugged but then the boys show up??? Like somehow they knew exactly where she was in Europe and show up exactly where she is exactly when she needs them?? DO THEY HAVE HER CHIPPED????

I don't hate the show... It's old lmao and I knew what I was getting into... but damn some of these writing choices 💀It's fun ig lmao

It's been a while, but the anime, "Say I Love You" also had a similar dynamic for a while if I remember correctly (albeit not as egregious, I don't think the mc was too bad). There's also "Orange" which has a sweet secondary love interest. The ml is definitely more developed... but it's still kinda very rough knowing what the sl sacrifices. (The ending was open-ended I personally thought she'd get with the sl, but I rechecked while writing this and apparently I missed an epilogue special, where it's confirmed she gets with the ml).

(The black hair, Kakeru, is the ml. The orange, Suwa, is the sl. And the girl in the centre, Naho, is mc.)

I guess we root for them because they're underdogs — they don't get what they deserve, they're underrated in the world, and it'd be nice to see them get something, at least a good romance with and support from the mc.

There's also a more sinister interpretation, however, reserved for interests who won't stop even though the woman's uninterested. eg. Lance from Voltron, Stiles from Teen Wolf, JACOB from Twilight. Essentially where the man's incessant advances infringe upon the autonomy of the woman and her choices.

Where they view the woman and her affection as something to be "won". And it's a thought process that viewers adopt as well.

For an extreme example, since I want to rant, I've seen folks complain about the ending of the anime Erased (kinda major spoilers here, sorry, but I recommend the anime, it's good!)

You can see this sense of entitlement on behalf of the main character — why else would he try to save the girl, if not to end up dating her? And the appropriate response for being "backstabbed"would obviously be to "stab that girl"... This is horrifying.

It's a very misogynistic way of thinking, to respond to romantic disinterest with violence. (The story isn't a romance. And the main character is not even interested in the girl! These folks are essentially projecting their expectations onto the narrative.)

This is obviously not as much the case with ILY, Cheese in The Trap (from what I can tell), or Fruits Basket. For starters, they're romances... The mc could hypothetically be compatible or like either the ml or sl (excluding Kousuke as of right now). It's also not nearly as weird to want her to get with one over the other, unlike in Erased where the expectation is bizarre (and honestly kind of inappropriate if you're aware of the characters involved).

We also don't have those incessant advances like in Twilight, and instead see the opposite, where the men actually dislike themselves so much that they don't even allow themselves to even try pursuing a romantic relationship (although there is actual potential).

Our second lead syndrome in these cases is more so rooted in who we determine as most compatible with the mc. And the nice, misunderstood but trying his best, second lead often seems better than the ml.

(But I can't deny that we, the viewers, may still view the mc's love as a reward — it's tough differentiating whether we'd find a relationship satisfying bc of the narrative or bc of this outdated subconscious notion).

The fact that they're romances convolute the issue further... we're primed to view whoever gets the girl as "the winner." So I guess there's still a little bit of this at play.

Speaking of Kyo, he's a perfect example of what you mentioned! I actually initially thought he would be that secondary love interest because - tropes, but you really start to root for him early on. Since, exactly as you said, you want to see a character denied love be loved.

The romance with Kyo is one of my favourite in shoujo anime/manga (if not my most favourite). I didn't watch the anime, but I read the manga (hard copy collector's edition version, I couldn't find the same translation online) and it's beautifully written. When he's being hit by Akito and realizes his feelings for Tohru and says, "She didn't solve my problems... but more importantly she stayed there..." and then thinks, "It feels like she's saying, 'I love you. I love you just the way you are.'"

It's a beautiful scene. I was in awe of Natsuki Takaya and understood why this is a shoujo classic. (Then the manga focuses on a bunch of weird age-gap relationships that have aged VERY poorly, but the Tohru and Kyo stuff? Always a 10/10.)

What Kyo thinks is exactly what you feel and notice. Tohru isn't all that special — she doesn't solve their problems (well, eh kinda), she just shows a group of troubled and abused people what healthy, non-conditional love is, and that's why all the Zodiac members become so enamoured with her. It's love that heals them.

And it's so fitting the one she falls in love with is the one most outcast, the one despised, the one who most believes he isn't deserving of love.

As to how this all relates to ILY... Yeong-gi definitely seems similar to these "second leads" because like them, he's that underdog character — trying his best despite the circumstances, but he's always cast aside. I guess it would feel really great to see this character who doesn't love himself and is deprived of love to heal through it. And a great vehicle for that would be a romantic relationship.

I know there's been this shift culturally to look down on romance and to say platonic rep is good. This shift for the most part is good because it counters harmful notions like the one I mentioned earlier.

But narratively, romance, if done right, is just as great imho. (I've also seen the "romances are cliché and people can just be friends!!" argument used against subtextual queer media. But that's a topic for another day). It all depends on the story being told.

In ILY, it would be so satisfying to see a Stalkyoo romance because it would effectively fulfill that part of Yeong-gi's arc AND Shin-ae's. It would be great to see how it would impact Shin-ae, who keeps her guard up and is cynical of love due to being hurt in the past.

They're both characters in need of learning to love and be loved.

And it'd be so beautiful to see them learn together.
