favorite thing about them

i just think the most about characters and factions who existed on hallownest's fringes, and the radiance is the ultimate example of that. and she's just a character who we see very little of, and not for no reason! so you have to piece together a lot of shreds of information to get an idea of the kind of person she was...

like for one i think the fact the moths are peaceful as a rule is something that would make sense if it reflected on her? ive seen people refer to her as a war god and that's like. okay then explain to me why a war god would create people who aren't known for carrying weapons...and i spoke about it in the seer ask, but her being associated with death and funerals and ghosts is also something that makes sense to me. basically i think it's interesting that she's a character who exists almost entirely by implication, who you have to go to a decent amount of effort to figure out anything about her

it makes it so i just can't dislike her. and it's pretty disappointing how fan reaction to her is primarily to either demonize her and attribute bad things to her that we either don't have evidence for or we have evidence that contradicts it, or they bring in real world struggle in a way i find wildly disrespectful & fetishistic. we are in a nightmare world basically

i just think it's so interesting! it's difficult for me to think the seer isn't drawing a parallel between ghost's situation and what happened to the radiance...this is not the first time ghost has been judged unworthy of life; if they were a good child, they would have died all that time ago, another body lining the abyss

the dreamers have condemned them to the same fate. there's no way to escape the dream; without the seer's aid, all they can do is, as she puts it, fade slowly away. and what for? yet another sacrifice extracted from them for the sake of this dead kingdom. by this point it isn't possible to do anything the dreamers fear - they need the dreamnail for that. they are condemned because they are inconvenient

and, well, the radiance was also put in that position...a lot of the game is about death and accepting that things will end, and the core arrogance of hallownest is repeatedly framed as the pale king declaring it would last forever. it's what vespa says the bees will have no part in, and there's ozymandius signs all over the damn place. so at least personally i find it significant that the radiance is repeatedly associated with the dead and the remembrance of the dead, her sacred place being a graveyard and her last follower being its groundskeeper, and she's also the one who pk needed to get rid of in order to make his eternal kingdom possible.

but accepting that things end is not the same as lying down and dying just because someone wants you out of the way for their own gain...which is exactly what the pale king wanted for both of them

for a literal "bro" i actually see grimm as her brother who she's on fairly good terms with. idk, just never thought there was any particular reason for them to be at odds, and my own read of grimm's actions and the ritual was that he's enacting some kind of belated vengeance against hallownest for what happened to the radiance. by his nature, he could never have arrived "on time", but desecrating a corpse is well within his abilities.

the whole "erasing her memory" thing was referred to as a seal in a developer's note. it's even referred to as a prior attempt before the hollow knight plan - "Thus the first attempt to seal Radiance failed, and the King had to try another method - the Vessel."

i really can't think of her as not being a death god; it's just the impression i get from both her explicit connection to dreams, and how the dreaming and the dead are so tightly linked. the dream nail shows you both, after all, and the ghosts you fight are dream warriors. also, a place important to the moths, and presumably to her as well, is a literal graveyard. and that adds another dimension - it is specifically important to her that the dead be remembered and honored.

she has no physical form, which is funny because every other god we know of does. the pale king, the white lady, unn, grimm, even the lifeblood creature...grimm and unn both have some connection to dreams as well, so it isn't like that precludes you from possessing a physical form.

so...well...i keep thinking about that first seal, and that attempt to erase her memory. did it involve killing her? is there a corpse somewhere, long forgotten in an unmarked grave? to one such as her, what greater insult could there be?

first is that i think it's honestly kinda gross to say that the pale king and the radiance were equally at fault for what happened - one of them's a fuckin colonizer who goes around trying to absorb every group in the area into his kingdom, and the other is the god of one of those groups. they are not on equal terms here...

i also think it's gross to make her worse for the purpose of making whoever your fave is - often grimm or the pale king - Better. like she needs to be the worst most evil sister so grimm can get some pathos, she needs to be the most violent beast so the pale king can get some pathos, etc.

i could go on but i would literally never stop.

Ah, September! When leaves fall, and dynasties rise—or crumble, like an old stadium about to be condemned. And speaking of crumbling empires and condemned edifices, let's talk about the latest changes in ownership in our hallowed Gibson League.

The Huntington Hornets: Old Vices and New Money

First up, the Huntington Hornets. Ah, the Hornets, a dynasty like no other, with a collection of 10 World Series rings in a mere 25 years. It makes the rest of the league look like bush-league stragglers trying to keep up in a big-city footrace. But, like any outfit that's too successful, it starts to smell fishy—and I'm not talking about the catch of the day at Huntington Harbor.

Longtime owner Hogsfan is stepping down, or should I say, scurrying away. Stepping into his cleats is an enigmatic figure known as AllSox. Now, I've been around the diamond more times than most, and I have to say, I've long suspected the Hornets of being up to some tricks that aren't exactly in the rulebook. Don't get me wrong, no one's caught 'em red-handed. But between their knack for finding diamonds in the rough and the occasional player who seems to bloom overnight like a desert flower, there's something in the water—or maybe in the syringe, eh?

It raises the question: will AllSox carry on the management style of the old regime? There's no denying the new owner is set up with the best roster in the league, but does that come with a continuation of the darker arts of talent development? Only time will tell.

The Cheeseheads: A Tale of Fond Farewells and Fresh Starts

Switching gears, we move our gaze toward the Detroit Maroons, who've just high-tailed it to Milwaukee and rebranded themselves as the Cheeseheads. I'm sure the good people of Wisconsin are simply thrilled.

The Maroons were under the careful stewardship of Slocker, a man more beloved in the sport than peanuts at a ballgame. I've had the privilege of interviewing him numerous times over the years, and I can tell you the man is baseball through and through. As a member of the "eligibility committee," he's done yeoman's work steering the ship, keeping the league from running aground like a booze cruise gone bad.

Yet for all his accolades, Slocker could pinch a penny until Lincoln cried for mercy. A frugal owner, he seldom shelled out the big bucks for managerial talent, and it showed. The Maroons made fewer trips to the postseason than a teetotaler to a liquor store. Now that the franchise has changed hands to a new owner with a portfolio full of sports teams, one has to wonder: will the Cheeseheads get the focus they need?

You see, sports franchises aren't like stocks you can diversify and forget about. They need hands-on love and care, like a pitcher's mitt or a vintage collection of baseball cards. The new owner has the resources, but does he have the time and commitment to right the ship? Milwaukee deserves nothing less.

Swinging for the Fences or Striking Out?

Ah, friends, baseball is a curious beast. On the one hand, we have a winning team with a shadowy past, and on the other, a team beloved but beleaguered, struggling to reach for former glory. In either case, both are staring down the barrel of a new era, for better or worse.

Will AllSox keep the Hornets' legacy untarnished, or will the rumors finally catch up to reality? And can the new owner of the Cheeseheads turn Wisconsin's latest import into a Midwestern powerhouse, or will he be too busy managing his portfolio to manage a baseball team?

As we wait for the first pitch of the next season, all I can say is this: grab your peanuts and Cracker Jack folks, because it's gonna be one hell of a game.

It is okay! I would just like to answer questions about / discuss my own headcanons, or, if you personally have a headcanon you want to discuss.

Here are some of my own Hornet headcanons!

She’s actually kinda terrible about getting a reliable amount of sleep, considering she’s one of the few people in the kingdom who knew about the Radiance and thus the actual vector of infection being dreams- so she pushed herself really hard to sleep as little as possible and even now has kind of a reflexive distrust about getting too comfortable. If she’s ever caught napping (which is hard, as she’s a very light sleeper in the first place) she tends to be propped up or otherwise ready to go at any moment. More rarely, she’ll sleep curled up but clutching her needle.

Having spent part of her upbringing in the hive she actually has a sweet tooth that she rarely gets to cut on things and doesn’t want to admit to. Honey makes her homesick.

Uses natural stoicism and impatience/diligence to mask that she’s actually bad at holding conversations or expressing feelings in general. Like Disney-Mulan-Trying-To-Bond-With-Men levels of awkward. Hornet will just say shit and have to deal with the consequences. She is a slave to the part of her brain that translates everything into the rudest possible way to say it and her resting serious face makes it hard to tell the times she regrets it from the times she doesn’t

Between Hornet and Ghost, Hornet has the zoomies actually way more often than Ghost does. That is not to say Ghost will never chaotically yeet themselves or enjoy it, but that their thought process is more the equivalent of ‘oh this is going to be so efficient here I go’ cue something improbable and potentially unsafe, while Hornet will sometimes chaotically yeet herself simply because she has been sitting quietly for way too long and if she doesn’t move she’s gonna flip her shit so There She Goes

Sometimes Hornet Goes Fishing. The blue lake yields weird copepod-type things. Hornet has detailed opinions about how almost all of them taste.

I think Hornet would actually find Zote sort of funny like the first time she meets him she thinks he’s a liability and tries to kill him but he just falls off a ledge or something and then later shows up, again?? and just keeps showing up, and Hornet has no idea how to parse it but it slowly tickles her undernourished sense of humor until eventually it’s just sort of a strange cosmic reassurance. They get hit by a catastrophic storm, and she slogs through it trying to prevent it from tearing down buildings, and distantly hears the sound of grumbling. Ah. There’s Zote. Right on schedule.

Modern fantastic AU Hornet would be the equivalent of a feral teen with a magic sword strapped to her back living out of a treehouse in the woods that she built herself known only to the local convenience store that she occasionally crashes at odd hours of the night to buy supplies, which she pays for exclusively with extremely fishy but in fact legal tinder.

And they both didn’t know whose fault it was. Just kids at that time, they did what childish innocence highlighted as the best. Protect each other whenever possible. She saved him from the war, and he gave her shelter in Arendelle, all the while protecting her, keeping her safe and close to his heart. Their love was unique,for it had not sprouted from any sort of beneficial royal alliances and friendships. Their love was strong, for it had braved the ravages of time, and had gradually morphed from close friendship to a bond that lasted for eternity.

Fixing the clearly hyperventilating tourist with an unimpressed gaze, the guide spoke, "Everything is fine, sir."

"Really? Are you sure? ‘Cause if you are, then what for freak's sake is that?!", the tourist pointed frantically in the direction of the Louvre.

Ah!

 A fine piece of artistic malfunction was rampaging the area. Masked teenagers clad in red, black and yellow spandex were fighting a purple-clad bird-boy hybrid, all of them performing mind blowing circus stunts and parkour while fighting with a yo-yo, a baton, a top and a feathered fan. 

 The guide turned back to the group, grinning, "Yep. 100% sure. This is just another normal day in Paris. Now continuing the tour..."

A LadyNoir+Adrinette fic (Undecided title)
